Long-Sought Redox Isomerization of the Europium(III/II) Complex Achieved by Molecular Reorientation at the Interface

Gradual solid-state redox-isomerism in the lanthanide series

Oxidation of [(ArBIG-bian)2-Yb2+(dme)] (1) (ArBIG-bian = 1,2-bis[(2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene; dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) by 0.5 equivalent of Me2NC(S)S-S(S)CNMe2 in dme at ambient temperature affords a mixture of two products, [(ArBIG-bian)2-Yb3+{SC(S)NMe2}1-(dme)] and [(ArBIG-bian)1-Yb2+{SC(S)NMe2}1-(dme)], which represent two redox-isomers (2a and 2b, respectively). Their ratio in solution depends on the solvent as well as on the temperature. In the solid state, a decrease of temperature (350 → 100 K) caused an electron transfer from the Yb2+ ion to the ArBIG-bian radical-anion in isomer 2b to afford isomer 2a. Accordingly, the ratio of isomers 2a and 2b changes from 1 : 1 (350 K) to 3 : 1 (100 K). In contrast, in the dimer [(dme)(dpp-bian)1-Yb2+(μ-Cl)2Yb3+(dpp-bian)2-(dme)] (dpp-bian = 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene), which is the sole example of a lanthanide complex that reveals solid-state redox-isomerism (valence tautomerism) reported so far, the electron transfer from the Yb2+ ion to the dpp-bian radical-anion takes place at around 150 K and is completed within a temperature interval of ca. 7 K.

Interface Asymmetry Induced and Surface Pressure Controlled Valence Tautomerism in Monolayers of bis-Phthalocyaninates of Lanthanides

Supramolecular systems based on transition metal complexes capable of reversible redox isomerization due to intramolecular electron transfer are one of the most interesting objects from the viewpoint of molecular switches’ design. In the present work, a comparative analysis of valence transformation of lanthanide complexes (Sm, Er, Tm and Yb) with donor-substituted bis-phthalocyaninates occurring during the formation and compression–extension of Langmuir monolayers was carried out using data of UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy. It is shown that the numerical values of the Q-band positions in the absorption spectra for the extended monolayers of the complexes under study depend linearly on the ionic radius of the metal center, if the metals have an oxidation state of +2. This makes it possible to draw a direct analogy between the behavior of the studied compounds and analogous europium and cerium complexes, for which direct evidence of the valence tautomerism in such planar systems was obtained earlier. This led to the conclusion that the intramolecular electron transfer from the phthalocyanine ligand to the central metal ion [Ln3+(R4Pc2‑)(R4Pc•−)]0 → [Ln2+(R4Pc•−)2]0 occurs when solutions of donor-substituted bis-phthalocyaninates of samarium, erbium, thulium, and ytterbium are deposited onto the water subphase, and the reverse redox-isomeric transition is observed in most cases when the monolayer is compressed to high surface pressures. The first of these switches is related to the asymmetry of the air/water interface, and the second one is controlled by the lateral compression–expansion of the monolayer. It has been demonstrated that when bis-phthalocyanine monolayers of lanthanides with variable valence are transferred to solid substrates, the valence state of the metal center, and consequently, the redox-isomeric state of the complex, do not change. This means that we are able to form films with a predetermined state of the complex. Note that the redox-isomeric state of complexes should affect the entire range of physicochemical properties of such films.

Octopus-Type Crown-Bisphthalocyaninate Anchor for Bottom-Up Assembly of Supramolecular Bilayers with Expanded Redox-Switching Capability

Achievement of information storage at molecular level remains a pressing task in miniaturization of computing technology. One of the promising approaches for its practical realization is development of nanoscale molecular switching materials including redox-active systems. The present work demonstrates a concept of expansion of a number of available redox-states of self-assembled monolayers through supramolecular approach. For this, the authors synthesized an octopus-like heteroleptic terbium(III) bisphthalocyaninate bearing one ligand with eight thioacetate-terminated "tentacles" (octopus-Pc) and a ligand with four crown-ether moieties (H₂ [(15C5)₄ Pc]). It is shown that octopus-Pc forms stable monolayers on gold, where its face-on orientation allows for subsequent binding of crown-phthalocyanine molecules via potassium ion bridges. This chemistry is utilized to form a heterogeneous bilayer, in which a single molecule thick adlayer brings an additional redox-state to the system, thus expanding the multistability of the system as a whole. All four redox states available to this system exhibit characteristic absorbance in visible range, allowing for the switching to be easily read out using optical density measurements. The proposed approach can be used in wide range of switchable materials-single-molecule magnets, conductive, and optical devices, etc.

Lanthanoid Complexes as Molecular Materials: The Redox Approach

The development of molecular materials with novel functionality offers promise for technological innovation. Switchable molecules that incorporate redox-active components are enticing candidate compounds due to their potential for electronic manipulation. Lanthanoid metals are most prevalent in their trivalent state and usually redox-activity in lanthanoid complexes is restricted to the ligand. The unique electronic and physical properties of lanthanoid ions have been exploited for various applications, including in magnetic and luminescent materials as well as in catalysis. Lanthanoid complexes are also promising for applications reliant on switchability, where the physical properties can be modulated by varying the oxidation state of a coordinated ligand. Lanthanoid-based redox activity is also possible, encompassing both divalent and tetravalent metal oxidation states. Thus, utilization of redox-active lanthanoid metals offers an attractive opportunity to further expand the capabilities of molecular materials. This review surveys both ligand and lanthanoid centered redox-activity in pre-existing molecular systems, including tuning of lanthanoid magnetic and photophysical properties by modulating the redox states of coordinated ligands. Ultimately the combination of redox-activity at both ligands and metal centers in the same molecule can afford novel electronic structures and physical properties, including multiconfigurational electronic states and valence tautomerism. Further targeted exploration of these features is clearly warranted, both to enhance understanding of the underlying fundamental chemistry, and for the generation of a potentially important new class of molecular material.

Functionalized heterocycle-appended porphyrins: catalysis matters

The scope and limitations of the condensation of labile 2,3-diaminoporphyrin derivatives with aromatic aldehydes to provide functionalized imidazole- and pyrazine-appended porphyrins were investigated in detail. The presence of an acidic catalyst in the reaction was found to be a tool that allows the reaction path to be switched. The influence of the electronic origin of the substituents in the carbonyl components of the condensation on the yields and selectivity of the reaction was revealed. Metal-promoted cross-coupling transformations were found to be convenient for the further targeted construction of functional derivatives based on the prepared bromo-substituted pyrazinoporphyrins. Overall, these strategies provide a versatile technique for the elaboration of a variety of functionalized heterocycle-appended porphyrins for further application in the development of hybrid materials.

Low-coordinate Sm(ii) and Yb(ii) complexes derived from sterically-hindered 1,2-bis(imino)acenaphthene (ArBIG-bian)

Reduction of Ar^BIG-bian with metallic Sm or Yb affords monomeric Ln(ii) complexes. In (Ar^BIG-bian)Sm, the metal reveals a low coordination number. The stabilization of the Sm center is provided by interaction with three Ph rings.
