Self-Assembly of Colloidal Molecules Based on Host-Guest Chemistry and Geometric Constraints

2D Plasmonic Molecules via Hydrogen Bond Interaction between Polymer-Grafted Nanoparticles

The use of macromolecular design features to regulate non-covalent bonding on the nanoscale is a young and emerging fabrication strategy for advanced nanostructures. For the first time, we describe a self-assembly method to create a series of 2D plasmonic molecules (PMs) using hydrogen-bond interaction between a pair of polymer-capped gold nanoparticles (hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor). Due to the nature of hydrogen-bond interaction, we found that polymer interaction and solvation compete with each other during the self-assembly process, which turns out to be the most important condition for controlling the coordination number of PMs. We have conducted an extensive study on the solvent effect, which has helped us to design and fabricate a series of precise PMs with high symmetry.

Molecular Engineering of Colloidal Atoms

Creation of architectures with exquisite hierarchies actuates the germination of revolutionized functions and applications across a wide range of fields. Hierarchical self-assembly of colloidal particles holds the promise for materialized realization of structural programing and customizing. This review outlines the general approaches to organize atom-like micro- and nanoparticles into prescribed colloidal analogs of molecules by exploiting diverse interparticle driving motifs involving confining templates, interactive surface ligands, and flexible shape/surface anisotropy. Furthermore, the self-regulated/adaptive co-assembly of simple unvarnished building blocks is discussed to inspire new designs of colloidal assembly strategies.

Effective Structure Control of Colloidal Molecules and the Morphology Evolution Mechanism Investigation

Colloidal molecules (CMs), nonspherical clusters of a small number of particles, can be used as building blocks for self-assembly applications. Here, we propose a novel one pot method for CMs synthesis. First, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(NIPAM-co-AA)) microgels were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization as seed particles, then monomer styrene and cross-linking agent divinylbenzene (DVB) were added, which could be polymerized by the remaining free radicals on the seed surface in situ. P(NIPAM-co-AA)-PS colloidal molecules with a series of morphologies such as popcorn-like, CO₂-like, NH₃-like, CH₄-like and so on could be obtained. The effects of satellite colloid viscosity, interfacial tension, and polymer chain mobility on the number of satellite colloid have been investigated, and the formation mechanism of CMs is proposed based on morphology evolution investigation. Compared with the existing CM synthesis techniques, our method enables fabricating CMs from vinyl monomer in a facile and efficient way, and the scientific finding regarding the CMs formation will guide the CMs fabrication toward salable and reliable direction.

Polythiolactone-Decorated Silica Particles: A Versatile Approach for Surface Functionalization, Catalysis and Encapsulation

The surface chemistry of colloidal silica has tremendous effects on its properties and applications. Commonly the design of silica particles is based on their de novo synthesis followed by surface functionalization leading to tailormade properties for a specific purpose. Here, the design of robust "precursor" polymer-decorated silica nano- and microparticles is demonstrated, which allows for easy post-modification by polymer embedded thiolactone chemistry. To obtain this organic-inorganic hybrid material, silica particles (SiO2 P) were functionalized via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) with poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA)-poly(thiolactone acrylamide (PThlAm) co-polymer brushes. Exploiting the versatility of thiolactone post-modification, a system was developed that could be used in three exemplary applications: 1) the straightforward molecular post-functionalization to tune the surface polarity, and therefore the dispersibility in various solvents; 2) the immobilization of metal nanoparticles into the polymer brushes via the in situ formation of free thiols that preserved catalytic activity in a model reaction; 3) the formation of redox-responsive, permeable polymer capsules by crosslinking the thiolactone moieties with cystamine dihydrochloride (CDH) followed by dissolution of the silica core.
