A Neutron Scattering Study of the Structure of Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-Stabilized Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PDMS-PMMA) Latexes in Dodecane

Measurable structure factors of dense dispersions containing polydisperse optically inhomogeneous particles

Here, it is investigated how optical properties of single scatterers in interacting multi-particle systems influence measurable structure factors. Both particles with linear gradients of their scattering length density and core-shell structures evoke characteristic deviations between the weighted sum 〈S(Q)〉 of partial structure factors in a multi-component system and experimentally accessible measurable structure factors S M(Q). While 〈S(Q)〉 contains only the structural information of self-organizing systems, S M(Q) is additionally influenced by the optical properties of their constituents, resulting in features such as changing amplitudes, additional peaks in the low-wavevector region or splitting of higher-order maxima, which are not related to structural reasons. It is shown that these effects can be systematically categorized according to the qualitative behaviour of the form factor in the Guinier region, which enables assessing the suitability of experimentally obtained structure factors to genuinely represent the microstructure of complex systems free from any particular model assumption. Hence, a careful data analysis regarding size distribution and optical properties of single scatterers is mandatory to avoid a misinterpretation of measurable structure factors.

Structure and short-time diffusion of concentrated suspensions consisting of silicone-stabilised PMMA particles: a quantitative analysis taking polydispersity effects into account

We characterise structure and dynamics of concentrated suspensions of silicone-stabilised PMMA particles immersed in index-matching decalin-tetralin mixtures by means of static and quasielastic light scattering experiments. These particles can reproducibly be prepared via a comparatively easy route and are thus promising model systems with hard-sphere interaction. We demonstrate the hard-sphere behaviour of dense suspensions of these systems rigorously taking polydispersity effects into account. Structure factors S(Q) can in the entire range of volume fractions with liquid-like structure quantitatively be modelled using a multi-component Percus-Yevick ansatz regarding the particle size distribution and the form factor assuming a core-shell model with a scattering length density gradient in the PMMA core. Herewith, hydrodynamic functions H(Q) are in the whole accessible Q-range beyond the second maximum of H(Q) quantitatively modelled using a rescaled δγ-approach for all investigated volume fractions. With these data, previously provided characterisation of dilute systems is extended: the excellent agreement of structural and dynamic properties with theoretical predictions for hard spheres demonstrates the suitability of these particles as a model system for hard spheres.

Span 85-Based Macromolecular Stabilizer for the Preparation of PMMA Colloidal Particles in a Nonpolar Media

Colloidal particles in a nonpolar media are closely correlated to industrial applications in particular particle-based electrophoretic display techniques. However, the synthesis of the commonly used poly(12-hydroxystearic acid)(PHSA)-based stabilizers for the dispersion polymerization of polymer particles in nonpolar solvent are troublesome. We report a sorbitan trioleate (Span 85)-based macromolecular copolymer stabilizer that can be easily synthesized and used for the preparation of PMMA particles in a nonpolar solvent. This is realized by synthesizing random copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and polymerizable sorbitan trioleate (M-Span 85), and the latter can be synthesized from the commercial product Span 85. Using this stabilizer, the resulting PMMA particles have narrow size distribution and tunable diameters. With the stabilizers, transferring water-dispersible particles to a nonpolar solvent and further preparing core/shell particles was verified to be a useful route. This provides an effective approach for using water-dispersible functional nanoparticles in nonpolar environments. In addition, the prepared PMMA particles are demonstrated to be a useful model system to study crystallization or glass transitions by quantitative confocal microscopy.

Temperature- and Composition-Induced Multiarchitectural Transitions in the Catanionic System of a Conventional Surfactant and a Surface-Active Ionic Liquid

The mixture of the cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and anionic surface-active ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumdodecyl sulfate (bmimDS), has been studied as a function of the mole fraction of CTAB, X _CTAB, with the total surfactant concentration fixed at 50 mM using turbidity measurements, rheology, dynamic light scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, small-angle neutron scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. The catanionic mixture has been found to exhibit phase transitions from vesicles to micelles as a function of temperature, with some mole fractions of CTAB showing dual transitions. Solutions of X _CTAB = 0.2 to 0.5 exhibited a single transition from vesicles to cylindrical micelles at 45 °C. With an increase in the mole fraction of CTAB from 0.55 to 0.65, dual structural transitions at 30 and 45 °C were observed. The microstructural transition at 30 °C is ascribed to the vesicle aggregation process with smaller vesicles fusing into bigger ones, whereas the transition at 45 °C was evaluated to be the vesicle-to-cylindrical micelle transition. However, at higher mole fractions of CTAB, X _CTAB from 0.65 to 0.90, a single transition from vesicles to small cylindrical/spherical micelles was observed in the solutions, at a lower temperature of 30 °C. To the best of our knowledge, such a microstructural transitions as a function of temperature in a single mixture of cationic and anionic surfactants without any additive has not been reported so far.

Small-angle neutron scattering measurements of mixtures of hydrogenous and deuterated n-tetradecane

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on mixtures of hydrogenous and deuterated species can be used to determine the distribution of molecules in these blends. The molecules are isotopically distinguishable but are chemically identical. This approach has been applied with great success to polymer science, but fewer examples are available for small molecules, such as solvents. SANS measurements of combinations of the linear alkane n-tetradecane were performed on mixtures prepared at different volume fractions of hydrogenous and deuterated alkane. These data have been analyzed using the framework of polymer scattering, and good agreement between experiment and theory was found.

Mechanochromism in Structurally Colored Polymeric Materials

Mechanochromic effects in structurally colored materials are the result of deformation-induced changes to their ordered nanostructures. Polymeric materials which respond in this way to deformation offer an attractive combination of characteristics, including continuous strain sensing, high strain resolution, and a wide strain-sensing range. Such materials are potentially useful for a wide range of applications, which extend from pressure-sensing bandages to anti-counterfeiting devices. Focusing on the materials design aspects, recent developments in this field are summarized. The article starts with an overview of different approaches to achieve mechanochromic effects in structurally colored materials, before the physical principles governing the interaction of light with each of these materials types are summarized. Diverse methodologies to prepare these polymers are then discussed in detail, and where applicable, naturally occurring materials that inspired the design of artificial systems are discussed. The capabilities and limitations of structurally colored materials in reporting and visualizing mechanical deformation are examined from a general standpoint and also in more specific technological contexts. To conclude, current trends in the field are highlighted and possible future opportunities are identified.
