Effect of Solvent on the Solution State of Conjugated Polymer P7DPF Including Single-Chain to Aggregated State Structure Formation, Dynamic Evolution, and Related Mechanisms

Effect of solvent quality and sidechain architecture on conjugated polymer chain conformation in solution

Conjugated polymers (CPs) are solution-processible for various electronic applications, where solution aggregation and dynamics could impact the morphology in the solid state. Various solvents and solvent mixtures have been used to dissolve and process CPs, but few studies have quantified the effect of solvent quality on the solution behavior of CPs. Herein, we performed static light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to investigate CP solution behaviors with solvents of varying quality, including poly(3-alkylthiophene) (P3ATs) with various sidechain lengths from -C4H9 to -C12H25, poly[bis(3-dodecyl-2-thienyl)-2,2'-dithiophene-5,5'-diyl] (PQT-12) and poly[2,5-bis(3-dodecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT-12). We found that chlorobenzene is a better solvent than toluene for various CPs, which was evident from the positive second virial coefficient A2 ranging from 0.3 to 4.7 × 10-3 cm3 mol g-2 towards P3ATs. For P3ATs in non-polar solvents, longer sidechains promote more positive A2, indicating a better polymer-solvent interaction, wherein A2 for toluene increases from -5.9 to 1.4 × 10-3 cm3 mol g-2, and in CB, A2 ranges from 1.0 to 4.7 × 10-3 cm3 mol g-2 when sidechain length increases from -C6H13 to -C12H25. Moreover, PQT-12 and PBTTT-12 have strong aggregation tendencies in all solutions, with an apparent positive A2 (∼0.5 × 10-3 cm3 mol g-2) due to multi-chain aggregates and peculiar chain folding. These solvent-dependent aggregation behaviors can be well correlated to spectroscopy measurement results. Our coarse-grained MD simulation results further suggested that CPs with long, dense, and branched sidechains can achieve enhanced polymer-solvent interaction, and thus enable overall better solution dispersion. This work provides quantitative insights into the solution behavior of conjugated polymers that can guide both the design and process of CPs toward next-generation organic electronics.

Elucidating the structure of donor-acceptor conjugated polymer aggregates in liquid solution

High-spin donor-acceptor conjugated polymers are extensively studied for their potential applications in magnetic and spintronic devices. Inter-chain charge transfer among these high-spin polymers mainly depends on the nature of the local structure of the thin film and π-stacking between the polymer chains. However, the microscopic structural details of high-spin polymeric materials are rarely studied with an atomistic force field, and the molecular-level local structure in the liquid phase remains ambiguous. Here, we have examined the effects of oligomer chain length, side chain, and processing temperature on the organization of the high-spin cyclopentadithiophene-benzobisthiadiazole donor-acceptor conjugated polymer in chloroform solvent. We find that the oligomers display ordered aggregates whose structure depends on their chain length, with an average π-stacking distance of 3.38 ± 0.03 Å (at T = 298 K) in good agreement with the experiment. Also, the oligomers with longer alkyl side chains show better solvation and a shorter π-stacking distance. Furthermore, the clusters grow faster at higher temperature with more ordered aggregation between the oligomer chains.

Design and Proofreading of the English-Chinese Computer-Aided Translation System by the Neural Network

At present, complete machine translation (MT) cannot meet the needs of information communication and cultural exchange, and the speed of complete human translation is too slow. Therefore, if MT is used to assist in the process of English-Chinese translation, it can not only prove that machine learning (ML) can translate English to Chinese but also improve the translation efficiency and accuracy of translators through human-machine cooperation. The research on the mutual cooperation between ML and human translation has an important research significance for translation systems. An English-Chinese computer-aided translation (CAT) system is designed and proofread based on a neural network (NN) model. First, it gives a brief overview of CAT. Second, the related theory of the NN model is discussed. An English-Chinese CAT and proofreading system based on the recurrent neural network (RNN) is constructed. Finally, the translation accuracy and proofreading recognition rate of the translation files of 17 different projects under different models are studied and analyzed. The research results reveal that according to the different translation properties of different texts, the average accuracy rate of text translation under the RNN model is 93.96%, and the mean accuracy of text translation under the transformer model is 90.60%. The translation accuracy of the RNN model in the CAT system is 3.36% higher than that of the transformer model. The English-Chinese CAT system based on the RNN model has different proofreading results for sentence processing, sentence alignment, and inconsistency detection of translation files of different projects. Among them, the recognition rate for sentence alignment and the inconsistency detection of English-Chinese translation is high, and the expected effect is achieved. The design of the English-Chinese CAT and proofreading system based on the RNN can make the translation and proofreading be carried out simultaneously, which greatly improves the efficiency of translation work. Meanwhile, the above research methods can improve the problems encountered in the current English-Chinese translation, provide a path for the bilingual translation process, and have certain promotion prospects.

Improving the Intrinsic Stretchability of Fully Conjugated Polymer for Deep-Blue Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes with a Narrow Band Emission: Benefits of Self-Toughness Effect

It is challenging to construct the intrinsically stretchable active layer of rigid conjugated polymers (CPs) toward flexible deep-blue light-emitting diodes (FLEDs). Inspired by the self-toughness effect, sacrificial hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) and a cross-linked network synergistically enabled polydiarylfluorene (PFs-NH) films to present efficient deep-blue emission and excellent intrinsic stretchability. In particular, a cross-linked network structure presenting viscoelasticity behaviors, which was successfully inherited into postprocessed films with interchain interpenetration and a crystallinity domain and behaved as energy absorption and dissipation centers, was induced by the interchain H-bonding interaction in toluene (Tol) precursor solutions where the storage moduli (G') gradually exceeded the loss moduli (G″). Subsequently, intrinsic stretchable films with a tensile rate of 30% were prepared from Tol solutions, different from the brittle films from polar solvents. Eventually, narrow band, deep-blue PLEDs showed a maximum EQE of 1.28% and a full width half-maximum (fwhm) of 28 nm. Therefore, the self-toughness effect induced by hierarchical structures will be feasible to obtain high-performance FLEDs.

Correlating Charge Transport Properties of Conjugated Polymers in Solution Aggregates and Thin-Film Aggregates

The role of solution aggregates on the charge transport process of conjugated polymers in electronic devices has gained increasing attention; however, the correlation of the charge carrier mobilities between the solution aggregates and the solid-state films remains elusive. Herein, three polymers, FBDOPV-2T, FBDOPV-2F2T, and FBDOPV-4F2T, are designed and synthesized with distinct aggregation behavior in solution. By combining contact-free ultrafast terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and field-effect transistor measurements, we track the charge carrier mobility of the aggregates of these polymers from the solution to the thin-film state. Remarkably, the mobility of these three polymers is found to follow nearly the same trend (FBDOPV-2T>FBDOPV-2F2T≫FBDOPV-4F2T) in both solutions and thin-film states. The quantitative mobility correlation indicates that the charge transport properties of solution aggregates play a critical role in determining the thin-film charge transport properties and final device performance. Our results highlight the importance of investigating and controlling solution aggregation structures towards efficient organic electronic devices.

The adsorption of aromatic macromolecules on graphene with entropy-tailored behavior and its utilization in exfoliating graphite

Aromatic macromolecules tend to form a compact conformation after physically adsorbed on graphene and it brings about great entropy loss for physisorption, due to the strong interaction between aromatic macromolecules and graphene. However, previous researches have validated the availability of aromatic macromolecules to stabilize graphene based on physisorption. In order to clarify the underlying mechanism of this physisorption process on graphene, a series of aromatic polyamide copolymers are used as models in this research. Apart from their adsorbed conformations on graphene, the conformations of these copolymers as the free states in diluted solutions are taken into consideration. Although these copolymers present the fully extended conformation on graphene, their conformations in diluted solutions vary largely with the copolymer composition. It is verified that the copolymer with smaller conformational change could have the better stabilization effectiveness for graphene, rather than the one having stronger interaction with graphene. Therefore, the entropy-tailored behavior for the adsorption of aromatic macromolecules on graphene is put forward. Based on this mechanism, the chemical structure of aromatic polyamide is optimized and furthermore it is utilized to directly exfoliate natural graphite flakes. Eventually, high-quality graphene nanosheets with a large dimension and low defects are obtained. Moreover, its exfoliating effectiveness is superior to those of the commonly used exfoliating agents nowadays.

Aβ aggregation behavior at interfaces with switchable wettability: a bioinspired perspective to understand amyloid formation

An amphiphilic taurocholic acid (TCA) doped polypyrrole (PPy) film (PPy/TCA) was used as a dynamic mimic membrane model to explore how switchable surface wettability influences amyloid aggregation. Our results indicate that the hydrophobic surface, not the hydrophilic surface, plays important roles in Aβ40 adsorption and aggregation.

Systematically investigating the effect of the aggregation behaviors in solution on the charge transport properties of BDOPV-based polymers with conjugation-break spacers

Conjugation-break spacers in conjugated polymers significantly affect the aggregation behavior in solution and in the solid state, which further influences the charge transport properties and doping efficiency.
