Mechanisms of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Network Formation and Its Configuration in Polymer-Based Nanocomposites

Surface Modification of Copper-Based Flakes for Conductive Polymer Composites

The physical properties as well as thermal and electrical stability of copper particles can be improved by surface protection, which mainly depends on the coating material. Our study was, therefore, focused on the rheological, thermal, mechanical and electrical characterization of polymer composites by comparing uncoated (Cu), silver-coated (Cu@Ag) and silica-coated (Cu@Si) copper flakes in low-density polyethylene at various volume concentrations (up to 40%). Interactions among particles were investigated by rheological properties, as these indicate network formation (geometrical entanglement), which is important for mechanical reinforcement as well as establishing an electric pathway (electrical percolation). The results showed that geometrical and electrical percolation were the same for Cu and Cu@Si, ~15%, while, surprisingly, Cu@Ag exhibited much lower percolation, ~7.5%, indicating the fusion of the Ag coating material, which also decreased crystal growth (degree of crystallinity). Furthermore, the magnitude of the rheological and mechanical response remained the same for all investigated materials, indicating that the coating materials do not provide any load transfer capabilities. However, they profoundly affect electron transfer, in that, Cu@Ag exhibited superior conductivity (74.4 S/m) compared to Cu (1.7 × 10-4 S/m) and Cu@Si (1.5 × 10-10 S/m). The results obtained are important for the design of advanced polymer composites for various applications, particularly in electronics where enhanced electrical conductivity is desired.

Photoluminescent Thin Films of Room-Temperature Glassy Tris(keto-hydrozone) Discotic Liquid Crystals and Their Nanocomposites with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Optoelectronics

This study addresses the photoresponse of liquid-crystalline tris(keto-hydrozone) discotic (TKHD)-a star-shaped molecular structure with three branches. Object of our research interest was also TKHD filled with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) at a concentration of 1 wt %. At room temperature, the discotic liquid crystals in thin films (thickness 3 μm) of both TKHD and nanocomposite SWCNT/TKHD were in a glassy state. Such glassy thin films exhibited photoluminescence ranging from the deep-red to the near-infrared spectral region, being attractive for organic optoelectronics. The addition of SWCNTs to TKHD was found to stabilize the photoluminescence of TKHD, which is of significance for optoelectronic device applications. The photothermoelectrical response of highly conductive SWCNT/TKHD nanocomposite films was characterized by electrical impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 1 MHz of the applied electric field. It was elucidated that the reversible photothermoelectrical effect in SWCNT/TKHD films occurs through SWCNTs and their network.

In Situ Study of Structure Formation under Stress in Stretchable Conducting Nanocomposites

One of the major limitations of flexible sensors is the loss of conductivity upon multiple stretching and bending cycles. Conducting fillers with two different geometries, carbon black and carbon nanotubes, were introduced in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for physical insights into the structure formation of nanofillers by the application of periodic tensile stress. The loading of the nanofillers was selected beyond the percolation threshold to determine the cyclic stability of the resulting network channels. The surface chemistry of carbon nanotubes has been varied to understand the interfacial interactions at the molecular length scale. The combination of in situ stretching, annealing, and vis-à-vis conductometry of nanocomposite films with synchrotron-based ultra-small angle X-ray scattering experiments enables us to highlight the importance of the fractal dimensions of nanofillers for the molecular level interactions. The irreversible formation of nanofiller network geometries under cyclic stress and annealing was found to be responsible for the electrical properties of a flexible conducting film.

Synchronized oscillations of carbon nanotubes dispersed in solution

Although synchronized oscillations are found in a variety of systems and living organisms in nature, there has been no report on technologically important materials. We have observed by a fluorescence microscope that a large number of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in an aqueous mixture of the surfactant and dye execute synchronized oscillations spontaneously. The movement was quantified to give a power spectrum, revealing a single, sharp synchronization peak at 20 Hz. It was found not to be affected nor created by external vibrations. The surfactant concentration dependence demonstrates that the Kuramoto model is applicable to describe the CNT synchronization. It is always associated with the power-law noise, indicating the presence of complex heterogeneous networks. These results suggest a highly cooperative form of the sparse CNT network connected with variable linkages.
