Abstract
The incorporation of heteroatoms within polycyclic aromatic compounds has gained significant interest due to its potential to effectively alter the inherent physicochemical properties of compounds without the need for profound structural changes. We herein report the development of a modular synthesis of hitherto unknown thienonaphtho[bc]pyridines and thienonaphtho[bc]quinolines in very good yields by Brønsted acid mediated cycloisomerization, permitting selective access to two isomeric products that are isoelectronic to the parent dibenzopyrene. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the desired compounds were extensively studied and further complemented by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has emerged as an efficient strategy to generate nanofibers of π-conjugated polymers (CPNFs) in a controlled fashion. However, reports of donor-acceptor (D-A) heterojunction CPNFs are extremely rare. The preparation of these materials remains a challenge due to the lack of rational design guidelines for the D-A π-conjugated units. Herein, we report a versatile CDSA strategy based upon carefully designed D-A-co-oligomers in which electron-deficient benzothiadiazole (BT) or dibenzo[b,d]thiophene 5,5-dioxide (FSO) units are attached to the two ends of an oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene) heptamer [BT-OPE7-BT, FSO-OPE7-FSO]. This arrangement with the electron-deficient groups at the two ends of the oligomer enhances the stacking interaction of the A-D-A π-conjugated structure. In contrast, D-A-D structures with a single BT in the middle of a string of OPE units disrupt the packing. We employed oligomers with a terminal alkyne to synthesize diblock copolymers BT-OPE7-BT-b-P2VP and BT-OPE7-BT-b-PNIPAM (P2VP = poly(2-vinylpyridine), PNIPAM = poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)) and FSO-OPE7-FSO-b-P2VP and FSO-OPE7-FSO-b-PNIPAM. CDSA experiments with these copolymers in ethanol were able to generate CPNFs of controlled length by both self-seeding and seeded growth as well as block comicelles with precisely tunable length and composition. Furthermore, the D-A CPNFs with a BT-OPE7-BT-based core demonstrate photocatalytic activity for the photooxidation of sulfide to sulfoxide and benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine. Given the scope of the oligomer compositions examined and the range of structures formed, we believe that the living CDSA strategy with D-A-based co-oligomers opens future opportunities for the creation of D-A CPNFs with programmable architectures as well as diverse functionalities and applications.

Abstract
Porous polymer networks (PPNs) are promising candidates as photocatalysts for hydrogen production. Constructing a donor-acceptor structure is known to be an effective approach for improving photocatalytic activity. However, the process of how a functional group of a monomer can ensure photoexcited charges transfer and improve the hydrogen evolution rate (HER) has not yet been studied on the molecular level. Herein, we design and synthesize two kinds of triazatruxene (TAT)-based PPNs: TATR-PPN with a hexyl (R) group and TAT-PPN without the hexyl group, to understand the relationship between the presence of the functional group and charge transfer. The hexyl group on the TAT unit was found to ensure the transfer of photoexcited electrons from a donor unit to an acceptor unit and endowed the TATR-PPN with stable hydrogen production.

Abstract
Taking into account the electron-rich and visible light response of thiophene, first-principles calculations have been carried out to explore the photocatalytic activity of donor-acceptor polymers incorporating thiophene and boron. Honeycomb-kagome boron-thiophene (BTP) polymers with varying numbers of thiophene units and fixed B center atoms are direct bandgap semiconductors with tunable bandgaps ranging from 2.41 to 1.88 eV and show high absorption coefficients under the ultraviolet and visible regions of the solar spectrum. Fine-tuning the band edges of the BTP polymer is efficiently achieved by adjusting the pore size through the manipulation of thiophene units between the B centers. This manipulation, achieved without excessive chemical functionalization, facilitates the generation of an appropriate quantity of photoexcited electrons and/or holes to straddle the redox potential of the water. Our study demonstrates that two units between B centers of thiophene in BTP polymers enable overall photocatalytic water splitting, whereas BTP polymers with larger pores solely promote photocatalytic hydrogen reduction. Moreover, the thermodynamics of hydrogen and oxygen reduction reactions either proceed spontaneously or need small additional external biases. Our findings provide the rationale for designing metal-free and single-material polymer photocatalysts based on thiophene, specifically for achieving efficient overall water splitting.

Abstract
Organic semiconductor materials are considered to be promising photocatalysts due to their excellent light absorption by chromophores, easy molecular structure tuning, and solution-processable properties. In particular, donor-acceptor (D-A) type organic photocatalytic materials synthesized by introducing D and A units intra- or intermolecularly, have made great progress in photocatalytic studies. More and more studies have demonstrated that the D-A type organic photocatalytic materials combine effective carrier separation, tunable bandgap, and sensitive optoelectronic response, and are considered to be an effective strategy for enhancing light absorption, improving exciton dissociation, and optimizing carrier transport. This review provides a thorough overview of D-A strategies aimed at optimizing the photocatalytic performance of organic semiconductors. Initially, essential methods for modifying organic photocatalytic materials, such as interface engineering, crystal engineering, and interaction modulation, are briefly discussed. Subsequently, the review delves into various organic photocatalytic materials based on intramolecular and intermolecular D-A interactions, encompassing small molecules, conjugated polymers, crystalline polymers, supramolecules, and organic heterojunctions. Meanwhile, the energy band structures, exciton dynamics, and redox-active sites of D-A type organic photocatalytic materials under different bonding modes are discussed. Finally, the review highlights the advanced applications of organic photocatalystsand outlines prospective challenges and opportunities.

Abstract
Conjugated polymers (CPs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to their structural abundance and tunable energy bands. Compared with CP-based materials, the inorganic semiconductor TiO2 has the advantages of low cost, non-toxicity and high photocatalytic hydrogen production (PHP) performance. However, studies on polymeric-inorganic heterojunctions, composed of D-A type CPs and TiO2, for boosting the PHP efficiency are still rare. Herein, an elucidation that the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity can actually be improved by forming polymeric-inorganic heterojunctions TFl@TiO2, TS@TiO2 and TSO2@TiO2, facilely synthesized through efficient in situ direct C-H arylation polymerization, is given. The compatible energy levels between virgin TiO2 and polymeric semiconductors enable the resulting functionalized CP@TiO2 heterojunctions to exhibit a considerable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (HER). Especially, the HER of TSO2@TiO2 heterojunction reaches up to 11,220 μmol g-1 h-1, approximately 5.47 and 1260 times higher than that of pristine TSO2 and TiO2 photocatalysts. The intrinsic merits of a donor-acceptor conjugated polymer and the interfacial interaction between CP and TiO2 account for the excellent PHP activity, facilitating the separation of photo-generated excitons. Considering the outstanding PHP behavior, our work discloses that the coupling of inorganic semiconductors and suitable D-A conjugated CPs would play significant roles in the photocatalysis community.

Abstract
Donor-acceptor semiconducting polymers present countless opportunities for application in photocatalysis. Previous studies have showcased their advantages through direct bottom-up methods. Unfortunately, these approaches often involve harsh reaction conditions, overlooking the impact of uncontrolled polymerization degrees on photocatalysis. Besides, the mechanism behind the separation of electron-hole pairs (excitons) in donor-acceptor polymers remains elusive. This study presents a post-synthetic method involving the light-induced transformation of the building blocks of hyper-cross-linked polymers from donor-carbon-donor to donor-carbon-acceptor states, resulting in a polymer with a substantial intramolecular dipole moment. Thus, excitons are efficiently separated in the transformed polymer. The utility of this strategy is exemplified by the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide synthesis. Encouragingly, our observations reveal the formation of intramolecular charge transfer states using time-resolved techniques, confirming transient exciton behavior involving separation and relaxation. This light-induced method not only guides the development of highly efficient donor-acceptor polymer photocatalysts but also applies to various fields, including organic solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and sensors.

Abstract
Three linear isoelectronic conjugated polymers PCC, PBC, and PBN are synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura polycondensation for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2 ) production from water. PBN presented an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 223.5 µmol h-1 (AQY420 = 23.3%) under visible light irradiation, which is 7 times that of PBC and 31 times that of PCC. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of PBN is due to the improved charge separation and transport of photo-induced electrons/holes originating from the lower exciton binding energy (Eb ), longer fluorescence lifetime, and stronger built-in electric field, caused by the introduction of the polar B←N unit into the polymer backbone. Moreover, the extension of the visible light absorption region and the enhancement of surface catalytic ability further increase the activity of PBN. This work reveals the potential of B←N fused structures as building blocks as well as proposes a rational design strategy for achieving high photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
Conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) photocatalysts with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) or donor-acceptor (D-A) structures have garnered great attention for solar-driven hydrogen generation because of their inherent charge separation nature and high surface area. Herein, we design a series of D-π-A-A-type CMP photocatalysts to uncover the influence of the content of the dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-S-S-dioxide (BTDO) acceptor on the photocatalytic activity. The results demonstrate that the acceptor content in the D-π-A-A-type CMP photocatalysts affects the electronic structure, the availability of reaction sites, and the separation between light-generated electrons and holes, which mainly determine the photocatalytic performance for H2 release. Benefiting from the synergy of light absorption, hydrophilicity, and active sites, the bare polymer PyT-BTDO-2 with an optimized BTDO content exhibits a high H2 production rate of 230.06 mmol h-1 g-1 under simulated sunlight, manifesting that the strategy of D-π-A-A structural design is efficacious for boosting the photocatalytic performance of CMP photocatalysts.

Abstract
Conjugated polymer photocatalysts for hydrogen production have the advantages of an adjustable structure, strong response in the visible light region, adjustable energy levels, and easy functionalization. Using an atom- and step-economic direct C-H arylation method, dibromocyanostilbene was polymerized with thiophene, dithiophene, terthiophene, and fused thienothiophene and dithienothiophene, respectively, to produce donor-acceptor (D-A)-type linear conjugated polymers containing different thiophene derivatives with different conjugation lengths. Among them, the D-A polymer photocatalyst constructed from dithienothiophene could significantly broaden the spectral response, with a hydrogen evolution rate up to 12.15 mmol h-1 g-1. The results showed that the increase in the number of fused rings on thiophene building blocks was beneficial to the photocatalytic hydrogen production of cyanostyrylphene-based linear polymers. For the unfused dithiophene and terthiophene, the increase in the number of thiophene rings enabled more rotation freedom between the thiophene rings and reduced the intrinsic charge mobility, resulting in lower hydrogen production performance accordingly. This study provides a suitable process for the design of electron donors for D-A polymer photocatalysts.

Abstract
Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been actively utilized as photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution due to their easy synthetic tunability to endow specific functionalities, including visible-light absorption, higher-lying LUMO energy for proton reduction, and sufficient photochemical stability. Enhancing interfacial surface and compatibility of hydrophobic CPs with hydrophilic water is the central focus to improve the hydrogen evolution rate (HER). Although a number of successful approaches have been developed in recent years, tedious chemical modifications or post-treatment of CPs make reproducibility of the materials difficult. In this work, a solution processable PBDB-T polymer is directly deposited on a glass substrate to form a thin film that is immersed in an aqueous solution to photochemically catalyze H2 generation. The PBDB-T thin film showed a much higher hydrogen evolution rate (HER) than the typical method of using PBDB-T suspended solids due to the enhanced interfacial area with a more suitable solid-state morphology. When the thickness of the thin film is reduced to dramatically improve the utilization of the photocatalytic material, the 0.1 mg-based PBDB-T thin film exhibited an unprecedentedly high HER of 120.90 mmol h-1 g-1.

Abstract
Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with donor-acceptor (D-A) molecular structure show high photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution due to the efficient light-induced electron/hole separation, which is mostly determined by the nature of electron donor and acceptor units. Therefore, the selection of electron donor and acceptor holds the key point to construct high performance polymer photocatalysts. Herein, two dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-S,S-dioxide (BTDO) containing CMP photocatalysts using tetraphenylethylene (TPE) or dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC) as the electron donor to investigate the influence of the geometry of electron donor on the photocatalytic activity are design and synthesized. Compared with the twisted TPE donor, DBC has a planar molecular structure with extended π-conjugation, which promotes the charges transmission and light-induced electron/hole separation. As a result, the polymer DBC-BTDO produced from DBC donor shows a remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (HER) of 104.86 mmol h-1 g-1 under full arc light (λ > 300 nm), which is much higher than that of the polymer TPE-BTDO (1.80 mmol h-1 g-1 ), demonstrating that DBC can be an efficient electron donor for constructing D-A polymer photocatalysts with high photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract
The hydrogen evolution performance of organic photo-catalysts is lagged by numerous factors, such as the narrow photon absorption window, low charge transport, and so on. In this paper, four linear conjugated polymers were designed and synthesized based on dibenzothiophene-S,S-dioxide as acceptor, and aza-substituted thiophene-phenyl-thiophene with different substituted numbers as co-units. The polymers with thiophene bridge and aza-substitution exhibited broad visible-absorption because of the extended conjugated length and improved planar structures resulting from the intramolecular non-covalent interactions (S···N or CH···N). The mono-substitution polymer without addition of any co-catalysts showed the highest photo-catalytic performances with the hydrogen evolution rates of 8950 and 7388 μmol g-1 h-1 under the UV-vis (>295 nm) and visible (>420 nm) irradiation, respectively. The corresponding apparent quantum yields were as high as 8.34, 5.37, and 1.96% for the 420, 500, and 550 nm monochromatic light irradiation, respectively, which were much higher than those of the classic polymer (P7) without thiophene bridge and aza-substitution. This work indicated that the incorporation of thiophene bridge enhanced visible absorption and aza-substitution optimized co-planarity and activate reactive sites, which should be an effective strategy to improve the photo-catalytic performance of linear conjugated polymer. Abstract
Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been investigated in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production because of their extended π-conjugation, tunable chemical structure and excellent thermal stability. Herein, we construct three CMPs based on thiophenes and triazine, and prove the effect of cross-linker length on photocatalytic activity of CMPs. BTPT-CMP1 exhibits blue-shifted optical absorption compared to BTPT-CMP2 and BTPT-CMP3 with long cross-linkers, however, possesses higher photocurrent because of the large specific surface area and small interface charge transfer resistance of BTPT-CMP1. It was found that BTPT-CMP1 (5561.87 μmol g-1 h-1) with short cross-linkers exhibits better photocatalytic performance compared to BTPT-CMP2 (1840.86 μmol g-1 h-1) and BTPT-CMP3 (1600.48 μmol g-1 h-1). Also, BTPT-CMP1 possesses a higher hydrogen evolution rate than most reported 1,3,5-triazine based conjugated polymers. These results demonstrate that the cross-linker length has great influence on the photocatalytic properties of conjugated microporous polymers, which offers theoretical direction for designing high-performance CMPs.
