Escape dynamics of active ring polymers in a cylindrical nanochannel

We explore the escape dynamics of active ring polymers confined in a cylindrical nanochannel using Brownian dynamics. Our simulation results show that the escape time decreases with the increase of the Péclet number, which is not noticeable between the two stages of the escape process, based on whether the center of mass of the polymer is inside or outside the nanochannel. However, the monomer motion trajectory of the active polymer is very different from that of the passive polymer, similar to the snake-like motion with uniform velocity. The passive polymer, however, is in constant fugitive motion with increased velocity at the tail end of the escape. Our work is vital for understanding the escape dynamics of active ring polymers in the confined nanochannel, which provides new perspectives on their characterization and analysis.

Flow-driven translocation of comb-like copolymer micelles through a nanochannel

Using hybrid lattice-Boltzmann molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the flow-driven translocation of comb-like copolymer micelles through a nanochannel, in particular, making a detailed comparison with micelles formed by the corresponding diblock copolymers. Our results demonstrate that the critical flow flux of micelles formed by the comb-like copolymers is higher than that of micelles formed by the corresponding diblock copolymers, which is more pronounced with increasing side chain lengths or grafting densities, as evidenced by the free energy computed by self-consistent field theory. Our work indicates that the impact of chain topology on the stability of micelles, especially with the same size, can be well characterized using the critical flow fluxes, which provides a theoretical basis for designing self-assembling micelles for various applications.

Nonmonotonous Translocation Time of Polymers across Pores

Polymers confined in corrugated channels, i.e., channels of varying amplitude, display multiple local maxima and minima of the diffusion coefficient upon increasing their degree of polymerization N. We propose a theoretical effective free energy for linear polymers based on a Fick-Jacobs approach. We validate the predictions against numerical data, obtaining quantitative agreement for the effective free energy, the diffusion coefficient, and the mean first passage time. Finally, we employ the effective free energy to compute the polymer lengths N_{min} at which the diffusion coefficient presents a minimum: we find a scaling expression that we rationalize with a blob model. Our results could be useful to design porous adsorbers, that separate polymers of different sizes without the action of an external flow.

Structure Transformation and Morphologic Modulation of Supramolecular Frameworks for Nanoseparation and Enzyme Loading

Supramolecular framework (SF) encourages the emergence of porous structures with molecular flexibility while the dimension and morphology controls are less involved even though critical factors are vital for various utilizations. Targeting this purpose, two isolated components are designed and their stepped combinations via ionic interaction, metal coordination, and hydrogen bond into framework assembly with two morphologic states are realized. The zinc coordination to an ionic complex of polyoxometalate with three cationic terpyridine ligands constructs 2D hexagonal SF structure. A further growth along perpendicular direction driven by hydrogen bonding between grafted mannose groups leads to 3D SF assemblies, providing a modulation superiority in one framework for multiple utilizations. The large area of multilayered SF sheet affords a filtration membrane for strict separation of nanoparticles/proteins under gently reduced pressures while the granular SF assembly demonstrates an efficient carrier to load and fix horse radish peroxidase with maintained activity for enzymatic catalysis.

Translocation of Hydrophobic Polyelectrolytes under Electrical Field: Molecular Dynamics Study

We studied the translocation of polyelectrolyte (PE) chains driven by an electric field through a pore by means of molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained HP model mimicking high salt conditions. Charged monomers were considered as polar (P) and neutral monomers as hydrophobic (H). We considered PE sequences that had equally spaced charges along the hydrophobic backbone. Hydrophobic PEs were in the globular form in which H-type and P-type monomers were partially segregated and they unfolded in order to translocate through the narrow channel under the electric field. We provided a quantitative comprehensive study of the interplay between translocation through a realistic pore and globule unraveling. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, incorporating realistic force fields inside the channel, we investigated the translocation dynamics of PEs at various solvent conditions. Starting from the captured conformations, we obtained distributions of waiting times and drift times at various solvent conditions. The shortest translocation time was observed for the slightly poor solvent. The minimum was rather shallow, and the translocation time was almost constant for medium hydrophobicity. The dynamics were controlled not only by the friction of the channel, but also by the internal friction related to the uncoiling of the heterogeneous globule. The latter can be rationalized by slow monomer relaxation in the dense phase. The results were compared with those from a simplified Fokker-Planck equation for the position of the head monomer.

Conformations and dynamic behaviors of confined wormlike chains in a pressure-driven flow

The conformations and dynamic behaviors of wormlike chains confined by a slit in a pressure-driven flow were investigated using dissipative particle dynamics method. The wormlike chains exhibit varying conformations due to the varying shear stresses across the slit. The wormlike chain solution can be well described by the power-law fluid, and the power-law index decreases with the increase in chain rigidity. We also presented that the wormlike chain undergoes tumbling motion in the vicinity of the wall in the presence of pressure-driven flow. We also found that the wormlike chains can migrate both away from the wall and slightly away from the slit center, and the migration away from the slit center increases as the chain rigidity is increased because of hydrodynamic interactions induced in a more rigid wormlike chain.
