Poisoning by Purity: What Stops Stereocomplex Crystallization in Polylactide Racemate?

Toward exclusive stereocomplex crystallization of high-molecular-weight poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(D-lactic acid) blends with outstanding heat resistance via incorporating selective nucleating agents

In high molecular weight poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(D-lactic acid) (HMW PLLA/PDLA) blends, the construction of exclusive stereocomplex crystals (SC) with high crystallinity and strong melt memory remains a great challenge. In the present study, various norbornene dicarboxylate complexes (TMXNa, Mg, Al, or Ca) were employed as the stereo-selective nucleating agents (NAs), and their effect on the crystallization characteristics, rheological behavior, and heat resistance of PLLA/PDLA blends were thoroughly studied. Strikingly, TMX-Al facilitated the construction of exclusive SC with over 50 % crystallinity and excellent melt memory. The dense SC crystals network structure boosted the heat resistance of L/D-xAl blends with a VST as high as 145 °C. The strengthened intermolecular interaction fostered the generation of pre-ordered structure in the melt and enhanced chain interdiffusion, which contributed to intermolecular nucleation and SC crystallization in L/D-xAl blend. This study opens up a new avenue for melt processing and application development of SC-PLA materials.

Experimental evidence for immiscibility of enantiomeric polymers: Phase separation of high-molecular-weight poly(ʟ-lactide)/poly(ᴅ-lactide) blends and its impact on hindering stereocomplex crystallization

Although polymers tend not to mix, it remains challenging to characterize the immiscibility of enantiomeric poly(ʟ-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(ᴅ-lactide) (PDLA), particularly with equivalent and high molecular weight (high MW), which frustratingly disfavors the exclusive stereocomplexation. By introducing a random copolymer (PLC) of ʟ-lactide and caprolactone to form binary blends with PLLA and PDLA, the phase behavior of high-MW PLLA/PDLA blends was investigated mainly by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). DSC results showed that PLLA/PLC blends exhibited a single glass transition temperature (Tg), which depended on the blending ratio and precisely corresponded with the theoretical values calculated from the Fox equation. In comparison, PDLA/PLC blends showed composition-dependent heat-capacity increment at two unchanged Tg values of pure PLC and PDLA. AFM observation revealed that PLC is completely miscible with PLLA at high MW but is immiscible with PDLA, logically suggesting immiscibility of high-MW PLLA and PDLA. Moreover, AFM results demonstrated that high-MW PLLA/PDLA blends exhibited spherical droplets in asymmetric blends and bicontinuous interpenetrating worm-like patterns in symmetric counterparts, showing distinct and well-defined interfaces, confirming the microphase separation. Additionally, different MWs fundamentally led to significant differences in miscibility, which consequently affected the crystallization behaviors of PLLA/PDLA blends. This work provides evidence for (im)miscibility and its crucial impact on the crystallization of PLLA/PDLA blends and has important implications for understanding the stereocomplexation of polymers.

Quantitative Model of Multiple Crystal Growth Rate Minima in Polymers with Regularly Spaced Substituent Groups

A simple theory has been developed to explain quantitatively the multiple crystal growth rate minima observed experimentally in polyethylene brassylates (PEBs), polymers with regularly spaced "chemical defects", in this case, diester groups separated by 11 methylenes. The minima occur at the transitions where the fold length drops from 4 to 3 repeat units and from 3 to 2 units. An analytical rate-equation model was developed with elementary attachment and detachment steps of individual monomer repeat units, also including postattachment stem lengthening (stem conversion). The model produced a good fit to experimental crystallization rate curves for PEBs of three different molecular weights. The fits confirm in a quantitative way that the anomalies are caused by the self-poisoning effect, as proposed in the original experimental report on PEBs, based on the ideas developed in previous studies on long-chain n-alkanes. It is concluded that the rate minima in PEBs are the result of temporary attachment to the growth surface of stems that are too short to be stable yet long enough and close to stability to obstruct productive growth by stems of sufficient length. The results confirm the ubiquitous presence of self-poisoning at the growth front of polymer crystals in general and will help to achieve a better understanding of the complex process of crystallization of polymers. It will also allow the determination of more realistic parameters controlling their lamellar growth kinetics.

Ring-Opening Polymerization of Cyclic Esters and Carbonates with (Thio)urea/Cyclopropenimine Organocatalytic Systems

Organocatalyzed ring-opening polymerization is a powerful tool for the synthesis of a variety of functional, readily degradable polyesters and polycarbonates. We report the use of (thio)ureas in combination with cyclopropenimine bases as a unique catalyst for the polymerization of cyclic esters and carbonates with a large span of reactivities. Methodologies of exceptionally effective and selective cocatalyst combinations were devised to produce polyesters and polycarbonates with narrow dispersities (Đ = 1.01-1.10). Correlations of the pKa of the various ureas and cyclopropenimine bases revealed the critical importance of matching the pKa of the two cocatalysts to achieve the most efficient polymerization conditions. It was found that promoting strong H-bonding interactions with a noncompetitive organic solvent, such as CH2Cl2, enabled greatly increased polymerization rates. The stereoselective polymerization of rac-lactide afforded stereoblock poly(lactides) that crystallize as stereocomplexes, as confirmed by wide-angle X-ray scattering.

Enhanced stereocomplex crystalline polylactic acids in melt processed enantiomeric bicomponent fiber configurations

The formation of stereocomplex crystalline domains in the bicomponent fiber melt spinning of enantiomeric polylactic acids (PLAs) is systematically explored and enhanced. Here we report a polycrystalline morphology where distinctly different crystalline regions are formed and aligned along the longitudinal direction of the fiber. This approach employs side-by-side and sheath-core bicomponent melt spinning configurations where the two components are the enantiomeric pairs of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA). We demonstrate the formation of the PLA stereocomplexes at the junction interphase through the melt spinning process which subsequently crystallize into a round fibers with stereocomplex and homogeneous crystal lamella morphologies. The fiber morphologies and crystallinities of the melt processed fiber are substantially different from the solution based bicomponent spinning system reported in the prior literature. Furthermore, the different molecular weight in the PLLA/PDLA pairing are found to be crucial to the structural development and properties of the PLA polycrystalline materials. The solid-state annealing does not change the crystal distribution of the crystalline domains and stereocomplex crystalline state, it just enhances the homo-crystallinity in the peripheral of the bicomponent fibers.

Cascade Energy Transfer and White-Light Emission in Chirality-Controlled Crystallization-Driven Two-Dimensional Co-assemblies from Donor and Acceptor Dye-Conjugated Polylactides

Achieving predictable and programmable two-dimensional (2D) structures with specific functions from exclusively organic soft materials remains a scientific challenge. This article unravels stereocomplex crystallization-driven self-assembly as a facile method for producing thermally robust discrete 2D-platelets of diamond shape from biodegradable semicrystalline polylactide (PLA) scaffolds. The method involves co-assembling two PLA stereoisomers, namely, PY-PDLA and NMI-PLLA, which form stereocomplex (SC)-crystals in isopropanol. By conjugating a well-known Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) donor and acceptor dye, namely, pyrene (PY) and naphthalene monoimide (NMI), respectively, to the chain termini of these two interacting stereoisomers, a thermally robust FRET process can be stimulated from the 2D array of the co-assembled dyes on the thermally resilient SC-PLA crystal surfaces. Uniquely, by decorating the surface of the SC-PLA crystals with an externally immobilized guest dye, Rhodamine-B, similar diamond-shaped structures could be produced that exhibit pure white-light emission through a surface-induced two-step cascade energy transfer process. The FRET response in these systems displays remarkable dependence on the intrinsic crystalline packing, which could be modulated by the chirality of the co-assembling PLA chains. This is supported by comparing the properties of similar 2D platelets generated from two homochiral PLLAs (PY-PLLA and NMI-PLLA) labeled with the same FRET pair.

Continuous Spectrum of Morphologies and Phase Behavior across the Contact Zone from Poly(l-lactide) to Poly(d-lactide): Stereocomplex, Homocrystal, and Between

The enantiomeric ratio is a key factor affecting the crystallization behavior and morphology of poly-l-lactide/poly-d-lactide (PLLA/PDLA) blends. Despite a number of studies on crystallization of nonequimolar PLLA/PDLA blends, a full picture of the effect of the L/D ratio is still lacking. Here, we put the two enantiomers in contact and allow interdiffusion above the melting point of the stereocomplex crystal (SC) to prepare samples with a continuously changing L/D ratio from enantiopure PLLA (ratio 0/100) to enantiopure PDLA (100/0). Using polarized optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and microbeam X-ray diffraction, the continuous spectrum of morphologies and phase behaviors across the contact zone is investigated. The blend morphology shows clear evidence of "poisoning by purity" of SC crystallization at all blend compositions. The low birefringence of the 50/50 SC is found to be due to the meandering of broken edge-on lamellae. Its further decrease to near zero as L/D deviates further away from 50/50 is explained by transition from radial edge-on lamellae to fully random meandering lamellae, then to mixed flat-on lamellae, and finally to submicron-sized axialites. In comparison with the smooth and straight homocrystal (HC) lamellae of pure enantiomers, the lamellae in the blends often have serrated edges caused by pinning by rejected excess enantiomer acting as an impurity during lamellar growth. A feature of the binary phase diagram is pure enantiomers acting as an impurity to the SC and counter-enantiomer acting as an impurity to homocrystallization of the enantiomers. Crystallization was found to be most suppressed at 99% enantiomeric purity, where the amount of the counter-enantiomer is insufficient for creation of SC nuclei and HC growth is inhibited by the small amount of the enantio-impurity. These and other intriguing results are less likely to be noticed without the continuous composition gradient of the contact sample.

Enantiomers Self-Sort into Separate Counter-Twisted Ribbons of the Fddd Liquid Crystal─Antiferrochirality and Parachirality

The recently discovered orthorhombic liquid crystal (LC) phase of symmetry Fddd is proving to be widespread. In this work, a chiral hydroxybutyrate linkage is inserted into the molecular core of hexacatenar rodlike compounds, containing a thienylfluorenone fluorophore. In addition to more usual tools, the methods used include grazing-incidence X-ray scattering, modulated differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), flash DSC with rates up to 6000 K/s, and chiro-optical spectroscopies using Mueller matrix method, plus conformational mapping. Although pure R and S enantiomers form only a strongly chiral hexagonal columnar LC phase (Colh*), the racemic mixture forms a highly ordered Fddd phase with 4 right- and 4 left-handed twisted ribbon-like columns traversing its large unit cell. In that structure, the two enantiomers locally deracemize and self-sort into the columns of their preferred chirality. The twisted ribbons in Fddd, with a 7.54 nm pitch, consist of stacked rafts, each containing ∼2 side-by-side molecules, the successive rafts rotated by 17°. In contrast, an analogous achiral compound forms only the columnar phase. The multiple methods used gave a comprehensive picture and helped in-depth understanding not only of the Fddd phase but also of the "parachiral" Colh* in pure enantiomers with irregular helicity, whose chirality is compared to the magnetization of a paramagnet in a field. Unusual short-range ordering effects are also described. An explanation of these phenomena is proposed based on conformational analysis. Surprisingly, the isotropic-columnar transition is extremely fast, completing within ∼20 ms. A clear effect of phase on UV-vis absorption and emission is observed.

Scalable Continuous Manufacturing Process of Stereocomplex PLA by Twin-Screw Extrusion

A scalable continuous manufacturing method to produce stereocomplex PLA was developed and optimized by melt-blending a 1:1 blend of high molecular weight poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and high molecular weight poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Thermal characteristics of stereocomplex formation were characterized via DSC to identify the optimal temperature profile and time for processing stereocomplex PLA. At the proper temperature window, high stereocomplex formation is achieved as the twin-screw extruder allows for alignment of the chains; this is due to stretching of the polymer chains in the extruder. The extruder processing conditions were optimized and used to produce >95% of stereocomplex PLA conversion (melting peak temperature T_pm = 240 °C). ATR-FTIR depicts the formation of stereocomplex crystallites based on the absorption band at 908 cm^-1 (β helix). The only peaks observed for stereocomplex PLA's WAXD profile were at 2θ values of 12, 21, and 24°, verifying >99% of stereocomplex formation. The total crystallinity of stereocomplex PLA ranges from 56 to 64%. A significant improvement in the tensile behavior was observed in comparison to the homopolymers, resulting in a polymer of high strength and toughness. These results lead us to propose stereocomplex PLA as a potential additive/fiber that can reinforce the material properties of neat PLA.
