Abstract
We developed a highly sensitive solid-state sensor for mercury detection by stabilizing red-sub-nanometric fluorescent gold nanoclusters (AuNC, 0.9 ± 0.1 nm diameter) with bovine serum albumin in a matrix composed of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) (BSA-AuNC/CNF). The main morphological and optical features of the system were investigated via atomic force/transmission electron microscopy and UV-Vis/fluorescence spectroscopy. The hybrid film (off-white and highly transparent) showed strong photoluminescene under UV irradiation. The latter is assigned to the AuNC, which also increase the ductility of the emitting film, which was demonstrated for high sensitivity Hg2+ detection. When used as a sensor system, following AuNC printing on CNF hybrid films, a limit of detection <10 nM was confirmed. What is more, nanocellulose films have a high pore structure and selective separation properties, showcasing a wide range of potential applications in many fields such as water treatment and oil-water separation.

Abstract
Chitin, an abundant, biodegradable, and biocompatible polysaccharide, is one of the most ideal eco-friendly alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. However, the applications of chitin-based materials are hindered by their low processability and brittleness induced by strong hydrogen bonds. Herein, a tensile-induced orientation and hydrogen bond reconstruction strategy was developed to fabricate a chitin nanowhiskers/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite film with high strength and toughness. After stretching and hydrogen bond reconstruction, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite film increased from 38.6 to 115.2 MPa and 9.37% to 40.7%, respectively. Furthermore, strengthening and toughening mechanisms were also studied, which were attributed to the effects of the intra-layer orientation and interlayer sliding, respectively.

Abstract
We investigate the void generation and growth process in semicrystalline polymers by large-scale coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Voids are generated in the amorphous layers and grow spherically and then cylindrically, consistent with the results of previous experiments. Interestingly, the fusion of voids is indicated to enlarge the voids in the direction perpendicular to the stretching direction, but not beyond the crystalline layers. The orientational order along the stretching direction increased sharply before void generation, but the increase leveled off afterward. The simulations also clearly reveal that the crystalline layers break but do not bend in the fragmentation process. The dependence of the void growth process on stretching velocity and the stability levels of voids at constant strain are also discussed.

Abstract
Transparent, ultradrawn, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/graphene nanocomposite films with a high thermal conductivity are successfully fabricated by solution-casting and solid-state drawing. It is found that the low optical transmittance (<75%) of the ultradrawn UHMWPE/graphene composite films is drastically improved (>90%) by adding 2-(2H-benzontriazol-2-yl)-4,6-ditertpentylphenol (BZT) as a second additive. This high transmission is interpreted in terms of a reduced void content in the composite films and the improved dispersion of graphene both of which decrease light scattering. The high thermal conductivity is attributed to the π-π interaction between BZT and graphene. In addition, a high specific thermal conductivity of ≈75 W m-1 K-1 ρ-1 of the ultradrawn UHMWPE/graphene/BZT composite films is obtained, which is higher than most metals and polymer nanocomposite. These transparent films are potentially excellent candidates for thermal management in various applications due to a combination of low density, ease of processing, and high thermal conductivity.

Abstract
Orientation direction dependency of whitening activated at large strains was studied using four pre-oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples with different molecular weights stretched along different directions with respect to the pre-orientation (0°, 45°, and 90°) by means of in situ wide-, small-, and ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. A macroscopic fracture of iPP materials was also observed following the stress whitening at large strains. These two associated processes in pre-oriented iPP samples at elevated temperatures were found to be governed by not only the molecular weight of iPP but also the pre-orientation direction. For a certain pre-orientation direction of iPP, both the critical stress of cavitation induced-whitening and failure stress increased with increasing molecular weight. For one given molecular weight, the pre-oriented iPP showed the smallest critical stress for whitening and failure stress along the pre-orientation direction (0°) while the samples displayed larger values for the same behaviors when stretched at 45° or 90° with respect to the pre-orientation direction. Such behavior suggested that oriented amorphous networks, with different mechanical strengths, can be generated during the second deformation processes in these pre-oriented iPP samples. The evolution of inter-fibrillar tie chains in highly oriented amorphous networks was considered as the main factor controlling the response of the inner network to the external stress since the cavitation-induced whitening activated at large strains was caused by the failure of load bearing inter-fibrillar tie chains in the oriented amorphous network.

Abstract
The poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) sample was used to investigate the cavitation-induced stress-whitening phenomenon during stretching at different temperatures via the ultrasmall-angle X-ray scattering technique. Two modes of cavitation were found that mode I cavitation activated around yield point followed by mode II cavitation generated in highly oriented state. The critical strain for initiating the mode II cavitation increases with the increase of the stretching temperature, whereas the critical stress grew steadily in the lower temperature regime (30-60 °C) and reached a plateau at 70 °C. The appearance of mode II cavitation at large strains was independent of the mode I cavitation. The mode I cavitation was attributed to the competitive process between the formation of cavities and shearing yield of lamellae, whereas the mode II cavitation was proven to be related to the failure of the whole highly oriented entangled amorphous network because of the breaking of interfibrillar load-bearing tie molecules. Size distribution of cavities has been successfully calculated using a model fitting procedure. The results showed that the quantity of cavities increased heavily while the size was kept nearly constant during the propagation of the mode II cavitation.

Abstract
The development of a highly oriented fiber morphology by effect of tensile deformation of stereodefective isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples, starting from the unoriented γ form, is studied by following the transformation in real time during stretching through wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements. In the stretching process, after yielding, the initial γ form transforms into the mesomorphic form of iPP through mechanical melting and re-crystallization. The analysis of the scattering invariant measured in the WAXS region highlights that the size of the mesomorphic domains included in the well oriented fiber morphology obtained at high deformations increases through a process which involves the coalescence of the small fragments formed by effect of tensile stress during lamellar destruction with the domain of higher dimensions.

Abstract
This detailed study reveals the relation between structural evolution and the mechanical response of α -, β - and γ -iPP. Uni-axial compression experiments, combined with in situ WAXD measurements, allowed for the identification of the evolution phenomena in terms of phase composition. Tensile experiments in combination with SAXS revealed orientation and voiding phenomena, as well as structural evolution in the thickness of the lamellae and amorphous layers. On the level of the crystallographic unit cell, the WAXD experiments provided insight into the early stages of deformation. Moreover, transitions in the crystal phases taking place in the larger deformation range and the orientation of crystal planes were monitored. At all stretching temperatures, the crystallinity decreases upon deformation, and depending on the temperature, different new structures are formed. Stretching at low temperatures leads to crystal destruction and the formation of the oriented mesophase, independent of the initial polymorph. At high temperatures, above T α c , all polymorphs transform into oriented α -iPP. Small quantities of the initial structures remain present in the material. The compression experiments, where localization phenomena are excluded, show that these transformations take place at similar strains for all polymorphs. For the post yield response, the strain hardening modulus is decisive for the mechanical behavior, as well as for the orientation of lamellae and the evolution of void fraction and dimensions. β -iPP shows by far the most intense voiding in the entire experimental temperature range. The macroscopic localization behavior and strain at which the transition from disk-like void shapes, oriented with the normal in tensile direction, into fibrillar structures takes place is directly correlated with the strain hardening modulus.
