Tetraphenylethene-Functionalized Conjugated Helical Poly(phenyl isocyanide) with Tunable Light Emission, Assembly Morphology, and Specific Applications

Monomer Emission Mechanism Research of Tetraphenylethene Derivative with Supramolecular Self-Assembly in Polymer Microspheres

The monomer emission property of the tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative is rarely reported, and its photoluminescence (PL) mechanism related to supramolecular self-assembly needs further in-depth research. Two long alkyl chain modified derivatives, the TPE derivative (TPE-C10) and pyrene derivative (Pyrene-C10), are designed and synthesized, which possess similar supramolecular assembly behavior but exhibit different PL properties. TPE-C10 not only forms self-assembly morphologies with monomer emission but also emits aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Moreover, the polymer microspheres containing TPE-C10 and Pyrene-C10 are prepared, which can dissolve or swell in different organic solvents. The changed binding effect of polymer chains achieves the luminescence transformation of TPE-C10 from AIE to monomer emission. This work hopefully can enrich luminescent materials based on the monomer emission of the TPE derivative and provide a new method for mechanism studies about supramolecular self-assembly and luminescence.

Mimicking the Natural World with Nanoarchitectonics for Self-Assembled Superstructures

Scientists are often inspired by nature, where naturally occurring morphologies, such as those that resemble animals and plants, can be created in the lab. In this review, we have provided an overview on complex superstructures of animals, plants and some similar shapes from the natural world. We begin this review with a discussion about the formation of various animal-like shapes from small organic molecules and polymers, and then move onto plants and other selected shapes. Literature surveys reveal that most of the polymers studied tend to form micellar structures, with some exceptions. Nevertheless, small organic molecules tend to form not only micellar structures but also other animal shapes such as worms and caterpillars. These superstructures tend to have high surface areas and variable surface morphology, making them very useful material for applications in various field such as catalysis, solar cells, and biomedicine, amongst others.

Self-Assembled Polymeric Materials: Design, Morphology, and Functional-Oriented Applications

This Review focuses on the current research advances of the synthesis of various amphiphilic block copolymers (ABCs), such as conventional ABCs and newly-presented polyprodrug amphiphiles (PPAs), and the development of corresponding self-assemblies in selective solvents driven by the intermolecular interactions, like noncovalent hydrophobic interactions, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonds, between ABCs or preformed small polymeric nanoparticles. The design of these assemblies is systematically introduced, and the diverse examples concerning the unique assembly structures along with the fast development of their exclusive properties and various applications in different fields were discussed. Possible perspectives on the existential challenges and glorious future were elucidated finally. We hope this review will provide a convenient way for readers to motivate more evolutional innovative concepts and methods to design next generation of novel polymeric nanoassemblies, and fill the gap between material design and practical applications. Facile Preparation of a Rhodamine B Derivative-Based Fluorescent Probe for Visual Detection of Iron Ions

Iron ions play an important role in our lives. Excessive or lack of iron ion intake leads to many diseases. At the same time, the water environment is easily polluted by these metal ions with the acceleration of industrialization. Therefore, the detection of iron ions in the water environment and the human body is particularly important. In this paper, we prepared a RhB-EDA fluorescent probe by condensing rhodamine B (RhB) with ethylenediamine (EDA) for high recognition of Fe3+. A RhB-EDA molecule itself is colorless and has no fluorescence emission in an alcohol solution. When Fe3+ was added, the lactam ring structure of the fluorescent probe opened, and the UV and fluorescence spectra changed. At the same time, the color of the mixed solution gradually deepened toward pink. Therefore, dual spectral detection and naked-eye observation of Fe3+ were realized. In addition, with the decrease of the pH value and the prolongation of chelating time, the ultraviolet absorbance and fluorescence emission intensity were enhanced and the color of the mixed solution deepened. The RhD-EDA fluorescent probe is simple and accurate and provides good technical support for the detection of Fe3+.

Contradiction or Unity? Thermally Stable Fluorescent Probe for In Situ Fast Identification of Self-sort or Co-assembly of Multicomponent Gelators with Sensitive Properties

Analyzing the assembly patterns of multicomponent gelators is important for understanding their assembly rules and precisely manipulating their molecular structure to form a tailored multifunctional supramolecular gel. But the fast in situ recognition technology to infer whether the assembly pattern is a self-sorting or co-assembled system is lacking. For developing a widely applicable stable and sensitive fluorescent probe to infer assembly patterns, we design and synthesize the multiple peripheral functional group tetraphenylethene (TPE) modified well-defined cubic core polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) three-dimensional (3D) dendrimer. POSS-TPE can form a thermally stable self-assembly structure after being incubated in a wide temperature range, and the resultant special thermally stable photoluminescence (PL) intensity provides a novel possibility of fluorescent probe. Then, POSS-TPE sensitively catches the mechanical stress changes of the confined space provided by the gel networks and infers the assembly patterns by comparing the mechanical stress change laws of a self-sorting or co-assembled system. So, the application of fluorescent probe in assembly fields is enlarged in this research. In the future, this widely applicable fluorescent probe will be helpful to develop supramolecular assembly materials consisting of multicomponent gels.

Tetraphenylethylene(TPE)-Containing Metal-Organic Nanobelt and Its Turn-on Fluorescence for Sulfide (S2-)

A metal-organic supramolecular nanobelt was synthesized by quantitative self-assembling terpyridine-functionized tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and Cd²⁺, which only showed a weak emission both in solution or aggregated state. Nevertheless, nanobelt complex could be transferred to a fluorescence turn-on sensor to S^2- by taking advantage of the structural transformation from nanobelt to its fluorescent ligand.

Highly enantioselective photo-polymerization enhanced by chiral nanoparticles and in situ photopatterning of chirality

Chiral noble metal nanoparticles has recently gained great interest due to their potential applications including ultrasensitive chiral recognition and asymmetric synthesis. We anticipate that they could be utilized to induce asymmetric photo-polymerization reactions with high enantioselectivity and reactivity. Here, we report such a system. By employing silver nanoparticles modified with cysteine as the chiral inducer, polydiacetylene (PDA) with high chiral asymmetry was obtained from achiral diacetylene monomers triggered with unpolarized UV light. Furthermore, the helical sense of chirality can be controlled by varying the wavelength of UV irradiation. This enables a feasible and economical method to fabricate programmable 2D patterns of chiral PDA with tailored chirality distributions, such as smooth gradients in chirality and micropatterns with tailorable circularly polarized luminescence. Our finding not only opens a pathway for producing programmable chiroptical micropatterns, but also is highly valuable for deeper understanding of symmetry breaking in enantioselective photochemical reactions.

Chiral nanoparticles are capable of ultrasensitive detection, characterization, and asymmetric synthesis of chiral organic and biological molecules. Supramolecular materials based on AIE luminogens (AIEgens): construction and applications

The emergence of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has significantly stimulated the development of luminescent supramolecular materials because their strong emissions in the aggregated state have resolved the notorious obstacle of the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, thereby enabling AIEgen-based supramolecular materials to have a promising prospect in the fields of luminescent materials, sensors, bioimaging, drug delivery, and theranostics. Moreover, in contrast to conventional fluorescent molecules, the configuration of AIEgens is highly twisted in space. Investigating AIEgens and the corresponding supramolecular materials provides fundamental insights into the self-assembly of nonplanar molecules, drastically expands the building blocks of supramolecular materials, and pushes forward the frontiers of supramolecular chemistry. In this review, we will summarize the basic concepts, seminal studies, recent trends, and perspectives in the construction and applications of AIEgen-based supramolecular materials with the hope to inspire more interest and additional ideas from researchers and further advance the development of supramolecular chemistry.

An acrylate AIE-active dye with a two-photon fluorescent switch for fluorescent nanoparticles by RAFT polymerization: synthesis, molecular structure and application in cell imaging

Recently, AIE-active fluorescent materials have attracted extensive investigation due to their significant applications in the fields of memory devices, photomodulation, information displays, sensors, and biological imaging. In this contribution, a novel acrylate AIE-active dye of TPMA was successfully synthesized by Suzuki coupling and acylation reaction, and belongs to the monoclinic crystal system and P21/c space group from the crystal structure analysis, and its fluorescence intensity was stronger with an obvious red shift of emission wavelength as compared with the reported TPB dye. Moreover, the obtained TPMA dye exhibits multi-stimuli-responsivity and a two-photon fluorescent switch with excellent reversibility in the solid state. Subsequently, the corresponding fluorescent polymers of PEG-TM were successfully fabricated via RAFT polymerization of TPMA and PEGMA with a molecular weight of about 25 000 (M n) and narrow polydispersity index (PDI). From 1H NMR analysis, when the feeding ratio of TPMA increased to 32.2% from 19.2%, the molar fraction of TPMA in PEG-TM polymers accordingly increased to 32.8% from 19.5%. In water solution, the as-prepared PEG-TM1 polymers would self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with diameters ranging from 150 to 250 nm, and their maximum emission wavelength presented at 518 nm with obvious AIE phenomena. Moreover, the as-synthesized PEG-TM polymers have prospective application in biological imaging due to their good fluorescence, high water solubility and excellent biocompatibility.

Helical Assemblies of One-Dimensional Supramolecular Polymers Composed of Helical Macromolecules: Generation of Circularly Polarized Light Using an Infinitesimal Chiral Source

We report the synthesis of one-dimensional supramolecular polymers composed of one-handed helical macromolecules bearing fluorescent pendant groups and the generation of circularly polarized light on the basis of hierarchical chiral amplification starting from a tiny amount of chiral substituent. Copolymerization of benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-appended achiral/chiral isocyanides (99:1, mol/mol) with a solid-state photoluminescence feature afforded submicrometer supramolecular fibers, in which almost perfect single-handed helical polyisocyanides were noncovalently connected end to end. The resulting helical supramolecular polymers were further helically assembled to form a cholesteric liquid crystal film with an intense circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signal. Surprisingly, the supramolecular system containing only 0.01 mol % of the chiral monomer unit also emitted the observable circularly polarized light owing to multiple chiral amplification from an infinitesimal point chirality to helical chirality and then to supramolecular chirality. Furthermore, chiral information was efficiently transferred from the helically assembled supramolecular system containing 1 mol % of the chiral unit to achiral dye molecules blended in the film, allowing full-color tunable induced CPL with luminescence dissymmetry factors greater than 1.0 × 10^-2. This unprecedentedly strong chiral amplification enables the creation of helical supramolecular polymers and chirally assembled systems with various chiral functions based solely on an infinitesimal chiral source.

Phenylboronic Acid-Dopamine Dynamic Covalent Bond Involved Dual-Responsive Polymeric Complex: Construction and Anticancer Investigation

In cancer treatment, prolonging the retention time of therapeutic agents in tumor tissues is a key point in enhancing the therapeutic efficacy. However, drug delivery by intravenous injection is always subjected to a "CAPIR" cascade, including circulation, accumulation, penetration, internalization, and release. Intratumoral administration has gradually emerged as an ideal alternative approach for nanomedicine because of its independence of blood constituents and minimal systemic toxicities. In this contribution, based on the dynamically reversible interaction between boronic acid (BA) and dopamine (DA), a thermo- and pH-responsive polymeric complex is rationally obtained by facile mixing of phenylboronic acid (PBA)- and tetraphenylethene (TPE)-modified poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(phenyl isocyanide)s block copolymers, PNIPAM-b-P(PBAPI-co-TPEPI), and tetra(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (OEGA)- and DA-containing hydrophilic P(DA-co-OEGA) copolymers. The resultant complex exhibited temperature- and pH-dependent size change as well as sustained nile red (NR) release profiles in a mimic tumor environment. Moreover, thanks to the opposite optical behavior of TPE and NR molecules, the complex could be served as a fluorescence ratiometric cell imaging agent, avoiding the interference of background fluorescence and improving correlated resolution. After encapsulation of camptothecin (anticancer drug), the efficient killing on HeLa cells was achieved in vitro, and the structural integrity of the complex endowed its extended retention time in tumor tissues. Considering these advantages, the reversible covalent interaction between PBA and diols can be used as an efficient driving force to form dynamic drug-delivery vectors, which are promising to be an effective nanoplatform for injectable medical treatments.

Chiral Self-Assembly of Nanoparticles Induced by Polymers Synthesized via Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization

Chiral inorganic nanomaterials are of great interest because of their excellent optical properties. Most of the attention has been focused on the utilization of biomolecules or their derivatives as linkers or templates to control the chiral structure of assembled inorganic nanoparticles. Chiral polymers are promising synthetic materials that can be used to replace their biological counterparts. Here, by using poly(methacrylate hydroxyethyl-3-indole propionate) (PIPEMA) and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) synthesized via syndioselective reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, we successfully realized chiral self-assembly of gold nanorods with strong circular dichroism response in the vis-NIR region. Moreover, the intensity of the chiral signal of the assemblies can be regulated by the molecular weight of the polymers. Notably, although the monomers are achiral and no chiral reagents are involved in their synthesis, the main chains of PIPEMA and PHEMA exhibit a preferred-handed helical conformation, which is the origin of chirality of the nanorod assemblies. The preferred-handed helical conformation of polymers is attributed to their syndiotacticity and stabilized by the steric hindrance of the side groups. The addition of chiral carbon atoms at the side groups does not change the preferred-handedness of the polymer main chain, resulting in the assembled nanorod structures with the same chirality. This strategy provides inspiration for the rational design and synthesis of optically active functional synthetic polymers for the preparation of promising chiral nanomaterials.

Widely Applicable AIE Chemosensor for On-Site Fast Detection of Drugs Based on the POSS-Core Dendrimer with the Controlled Self-Assembly Mechanism

A novel fluorescence chemosensor that can quickly on-site detect synthetic drugs and undergo prescreening is first reported. An eight tetraphenylethene (TPE)-modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) dendrimer is designed and synthesized as an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) chemosensor, which exhibits great enhancement of unique monomer emission in pure tetrahydrofuran (THF) and AIE emission in THF/water, thanks to forming different self-assembly morphologies. In addition, POSS-TPE can sensitively detect methamphetamine and ketamine even in artificial saliva by noncovalent interaction forces. It has great potential to be a new widely applicable AIE chemosensor for aromatic molecules.

Supramolecular Aggregates of Tetraphenylethene-Cored AIEgen toward Mechanoluminescent and Electroluminescent Devices

Luminescent materials possessing both the mechanoluminescence (MCL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties are the quest for sensing and optoelectronic applications. We report on the synthesis of a new tailor-made luminogen, 1,2-bis(4-(1-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-2,2-diphenylvinyl)phenyl)-1,2-diphenylethene (TPE 5), using Suzuki coupling reaction with high yield. An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active complex TPE 5 forms supramolecular spherical aggregates at the air-water interface of a Langmuir trough. As a consequence, a large enhancement of luminescence is obtained from the mono- and multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett films of TPE 5 owing to the AIE effect. The luminogen TPE 5 exhibits a reversible MCL response, displaying photoluminescence switching due to change in the crystalline states under external stimuli. The unique feature of luminescence enhancement upon aggregate formation is utilized for the fabrication of light-emitting diodes with low threshold voltage using supramolecular aggregates as the active layer. This work demonstrates an efficient strategy for obtaining controlled supramolecular aggregates of AIEgen with a potential in the dual applications of MCL and EL.

Polysiloxane-Modified Tetraphenylethene: Synthesis, AIE Properties, and Sensor for Detecting Explosives

Polysiloxane-modified tetraphenylethene (PTPESi) is successfully synthesized by attaching tetraphenylethene (TPE) units onto methylvinyldiethoxylsiloxane and subsequent polycondensation. Introducing polysiloxane into TPE has minimal effect on the photophysical properties and aggregation-induced emission behavior of TPE. The highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO and LUMO) energy levels of PTPESi are located mainly on the tetraphenylethene moieties. The fluorescence intensity and the half width of the emission peak of PTPESi before and after annealing at 120 °C for 12 h are nearly the same, indicating high thermal stability and morphological stability. In addition, use of PTPESi film as a sensor toward the vapor-phase detection of explosives is also studied and it displays quite high fluorescence quenching efficiency and good reversibility.

Stimuli-Responsive Block Copolymer-Based Assemblies for Cargo Delivery and Theranostic Applications

Although a number of tactics towards the fabrication and biomedical exploration of stimuli-responsive polymeric assemblies being responsive and adaptive to various factors have appeared, the controlled preparation of assemblies with well-defined physicochemical properties and tailor-made functions are still challenges. These responsive polymeric assemblies, which are triggered by stimuli, always exhibited reversible or irreversible changes in chemical structures and physical properties. However, simple drug/polymer nanocomplexes cannot deliver or release drugs into the diseased sites and cells on-demand due to the inevitable biological barriers. Hence, utilizing therapeutic or imaging agents-loaded stimuli-responsive block copolymer assemblies that are responsive to tumor internal microenvironments (pH, redox, enzyme, and temperature, etc.) or external stimuli (light and electromagnetic field, etc.) have emerged to be an important solution to improve therapeutic efficacy and imaging sensitivity through rationally designing as well as self-assembling approaches. In this review, we summarize a portion of recent progress in tumor and intracellular microenvironment responsive block copolymer assemblies and their applications in anticancer drug delivery and triggered release and enhanced imaging sensitivity. The outlook on future developments is also discussed. We hope that this review can stimulate more revolutionary ideas and novel concepts and meet the significant interest to diverse readers.
