Conformations of Ring Polystyrenes in Bulk Studied by SANS

Thermal properties of glycinin in crowded environments

Crowded environments, commonly found in the food system, are utilized to enhance the properties of soybean proteins. Despite their widespread application, little information exists regarding the impact of crowded environments on the denaturation behaviors of soybean proteins. In this study, we investigated how crowding agents with varying molecular weights, functional groups, and topology affect the denaturation behavior of glycinin under crowded conditions. The results reveal that thermal stability in PEG crowded environments is mainly influenced by both preferential hydration and binding. The stabilization is primarily enthalpy-driven, with aggregation contributing additional entropic stabilization. Specifically, ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol exhibit temperature-dependent, bilateral effects on glycinin stability. At the denaturation temperature, hydrophobic interactions play a predominant role, decreasing glycinin's thermal stability. However, at a molecular weight of 200 g/mol, there is a delicate balance between destabilizing and stabilizing effects, leading to no significant change in thermal stability. With the addition of PEG 400, 1000, and 2000, besides preferential hydration, additional hard-core repulsions between glycinin molecules enhance thermal stability. Methylation modification experiments demonstrated that 2-methoxyethyl ether exerted a more pronounced denaturing effect. Additionally, the cyclization of PEG 1000 decreased its stabilizing effect.

Rotaxane Formation of Multicyclic Polydimethylsiloxane in a Silicone Network: A Step toward Constructing "Macro-Rotaxanes" from High-Molecular-Weight Axle and Wheel Components

Rotaxanes consisting of a high-molecular-weight axle and wheel components (macro-rotaxanes) have high structural freedom, and are attractive for soft-material applications. However, their synthesis remains underexplored. Here, we investigated macro-rotaxane formation by the topological trapping of multicyclic polydimethylsiloxanes (mc-PDMSs) in silicone networks. mc-PDMS with different numbers of cyclic units and ring sizes was synthesized by cyclopolymerization of a α,ω-norbornenyl-functionalized PDMS. Silicone networks were prepared in the presence of 10-60 wt % mc-PDMS, and the trapping efficiency of mc-PDMS was determined. In contrast to monocyclic PDMS, mc-PDMSs with more cyclic units and larger ring sizes can be quantitatively trapped in the network as macro-rotaxanes. The damping performance of a 60 wt % mc-PDMS-blended silicone network was evaluated, revealing a higher tan δ value than the bare PDMS network. Thus, macro-rotaxanes are promising as non-leaching additives for network polymers.

Conformation of Network Strands in Polymer Gels

Small angle neutron scattering was used to measure single chain radii of gyration of end-linked polymer gels before and after cross-linking to calculate the prestrain, which is the ratio of the average chain size in a cross-linked network to that of a free chain in solution. The prestrain increased from 1.06 ± 0.01 to 1.16 ± 0.02 as gel synthesis concentration decreased near the overlap concentration, indicating that the chains are slightly more stretched in the network than in solution. Dilute gels with higher loop fractions were found to be spatially homogeneous. Form factor and volumetric scaling analyses independently confirmed that elastic strands stretch by 2-23% from Gaussian conformations to create a space-spanning network, with increased stretching as network synthesis concentration decreases. Prestrain measurements reported here serve as a point of reference for network theories that rely on this parameter for the calculation of mechanical properties.

A method to estimate the size of single-chain nanoparticles under severe crowding conditions

Single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) result from the folding of isolated polymer chains via intramolecular interactions. Currently, there is no theory able to rationalize the astonishing conformational behaviour of SCNPs under severe crowding conditions (e.g., highly concentrated solutions, all-polymer nanocomposites) and, specifically, the significant size reduction observed in highly crowded solutions of covalent-bonded SCNPs and all-polymer nanocomposites containing SCNPs. Herein, we propose a valuable method to estimate the size of SCNPs under crowding. The method - which is based on combining MD simulations results with scaling concepts - is also useful for ring polymers and nanostructured Janus-shaped SCNPs.

One-Shot Intrablock Cross-Linking of Linear Diblock Copolymer to Realize Janus-Shaped Single-Chain Nanoparticles

Developing an efficient and versatile process to transform a single linear polymer chain into a shape-defined nanoobject is a major challenge in the fields of chemistry and nanotechnology to replicate sophisticated biological functions of proteins and nucleic acids in a synthetic polymer system. In this study, we performed one-shot intrablock cross-linking of linear block copolymers (BCPs) to realize single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) with two chemically compartmentalized domains (Janus-shaped SCNPs). Detailed structural characterizations of the Janus-shaped SCNP composed of polystyrene-block-poly(glycolic acid) revealed its compactly folded conformation and compartmentalized block localization, similar to the self-folded tertiary structures of natural proteins. Versatility of the one-shot intrablock cross-linking was demonstrated using several different BCP precursors. In addition, the Janus-shaped SCNP produce miniscule microphase-separated structures.

Melt rheology of tadpole-shaped polystyrenes with different ring sizes

In this study, linear melt rheology of a single-tail tadpole-shaped polystyrene, ST-30/80, having ring and linear sizes of MR ∼ 30 kg mol-1 and ML ∼ 80 kg mol-1, respectively, was examined, and the effect of the ring size on rheological properties of tadpole polymers was discussed by comparing with the data of the previously reported tadpole samples having MR ∼ 60 kg mol-1. ST-30/80 exhibits an entanglement plateau and shows a clearly slower terminal relaxation than that of its component ring and linear polymers. When the zero-shear viscosity η0 for ST-30/80 is plotted against the molecular weight of a linear tail chain, the data point lies on the single curve of η0 for 4- and 6-arm star polymers and the single-tail tadpoles with MR ∼ 60 kg mol-1. These results suggest that the tadpole molecule in this study spontaneously forms a characteristic entanglement network, i.e., the intermolecular ring-linear threading, in the same manner as the previous tadpole samples, even though the size of the ring part is just slightly larger than the entanglement molecular weight (i.e., MR ∼ 1.8Me).

Local Effects of Ring Topology Observed in Polymer Conformation and Dynamics by Neutron Scattering-A Review

The physical properties of polymers depend on a range of both structural and chemical parameters, and in particular, on molecular topology. Apparently simple changes such as joining chains at a point to form stars or simply joining the two ends to form a ring can profoundly alter molecular conformation and dynamics, and hence properties. Cyclic polymers, as they do not have free ends, represent the simplest model system where reptation is completely suppressed. As a consequence, there exists a considerable literature and several reviews focused on high molecular weight cyclics where long range dynamics described by the reptation model comes into play. However, this is only one area of interest. Consideration of the conformation and dynamics of rings and chains, and of their mixtures, over molecular weights ranging from tens of repeat units up to and beyond the onset of entanglements and in both solution and melts has provided a rich literature for theory and simulation. Experimental work, particularly neutron scattering, has been limited by the difficulty of synthesizing well-characterized ring samples, and deuterated analogues. Here in the context of the broader literature we review investigations of local conformation and dynamics of linear and cyclic polymers, concentrating on poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) and covering a wide range of generally less high molar masses. Experimental data from small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS), including Neutron Spin Echo (NSE), are compared to theory and computational predictions.

Self-Similar Polymer Ring Conformations Based on Elementary Loops: A Direct Observation by SANS

We report small angle neutron scattering (SANS) results on very large polyethylene-oxide (PEO) rings in the melt. Major findings are (i) the observation of a cross over in the SANS pattern from a strong Q-dependence at intermediate Q to a Q^-2 dependence at higher Q that is independent of the ring size. Summing up scattering amplitudes in a minimal model that contains the ring closure and a cross over from Gaussian statistics at short distances to more compact structures at larger distances, we identify the cross over to occur at a distance along the ring of N_e,0 = 45 ± 2.5. We consider this finding as a clear signature of the theoretically predicted elementary loops that build up the ring conformation. Their size is in the range of an entanglement strand for linear PEO melts and they are characterized by Gaussian statistics. (ii) The chain length dependence of the radius of gyration R_g follows rather closely the prediction of Obukhov's decorated ring model. (iii) Other than extracted from numerous simulations that are interpreted in terms of a cross over to mass fractal behavior around N ≅ 10N_e,0 with a fractal dimension d_f = 3 and exponent ν = 1/3, we do not observe such a cross over, but R_g(N) ∼ N^ν=0.39 holds over the entire size range.

Unexpected Stretching of Entangled Ring Macromolecules

In the melt state at equilibrium, entangled nonconcatenated ring macromolecules adapt more compact conformations compared to their linear analogs and do not form an entanglement network. We show here that, when subjected to uniaxial stretching, they exhibit a unique response, which sets them apart from any other polymer. Remarkably, whereas both linear and ring polymers strain-harden, the viscosity of the rings increases dramatically (the melt thickens) at very low stretch rates due to the unraveling of their conformations along the stretching direction. At high rates, stretching leads to viscosity thinning similar to that of entangled linear polymers, albeit with subtle differences.

Adsorption Behavior of Polymer Chain with Different Topology Structure at the Polymer-Nanoparticle Interface

The effect of the polymer chain topology structure on the adsorption behavior in the polymer-nanoparticle (NP) interface is investigated by employing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations in various polymer-NP interaction and chain stiffness. At a weak polymer-NP interaction, ring chain with a closed topology structure has a slight priority to occupy the interfacial region than linear chain. At a strong polymer-NP interaction, the “middle” adsorption mechanism dominates the polymer local packing in the interface. As the increase of chain stiffness, an interesting transition from ring to linear chain preferential adsorption behavior occurs. The semiflexible linear chain squeezes ring chain out of the interfacial region by forming a helical structure and wrapping tightly the surface of NP. In particular, this selective adsorption behavior becomes more dramatic for the case of rigid-like chain, in which 3D tangent conformation of linear chain is absolutely prior to the 2D plane orbital structure of ring chain. The local packing and competitive adsorption behavior of bidisperse matrix in polymer-NP interface can be explained based on the adsorption mechanism of monodisperse (pure ring or linear) case. These investigations may provide some insights into polymer-NP interfacial adsorption behavior and guide the design of high-performance nanocomposites.
