Catalyst Nuclearity Effects on Stereo- and Regioinduction in Pyridylamidohafnium-Catalyzed Propylene and 1-Octene Polymerizations

Bis-[C(sp3)-chelating] Ti2 catalysts supported by arylene-1,4-diyl-2,3-X2 bridges for olefin copolymerisation: X substituents impose conformational cooperative effects

The synthesis, spectroscopic characterisation and catalytic olefin polymerisation behaviour of a class of binuclear titanium bis(benzyl) complexes bearing bis-(pyridine-2-phenolate-6-methine)-[μ-(arylene-1,4-diyl-2,3-X2)] ligands [X2 = -C4H4- (1), F2 (2), H2 (3)], and mononuclear analogues, are described. These bimetallic catalyst frameworks are designed to exhibit a degree of conformational flexibility, which is regulated by steric effects and crucially permits tuning of intermetallic distances and geometry, yet their shape-persistent nature can also confer favourable entropic terms. Complexes 1-3 are characterised as two diastereomers [meso (RS) and rac (RR,SS)] in ratios of 1.32, 1.18 and 1.13 respectively, according to 1H NMR spectroscopy. In contrast to 3, [1H,1H]-ROESY experiments for 1 and 2 revealed that the X2 substituents can impose preferred conformations with syn orientations of Ti2 centres and benzyl groups, thus implying that the activated catalysts would present binding sites with the same direction of access. For ethylene-(1-octene) copolymerisation reactions, in conjunction with [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4], catalyst 1 displayed superior efficiencies and produced polymers with higher Mw values and enhanced comonomer incorporation ratios (up to 41%), when compared with the mononuclear 5m (22%). These results are indicative of enhanced comonomer enchainment and cooperative reactivity by the Ti2 sites.

Coplanar binuclear group 4 post-metallocene complexes supported by chelating μ-(σ2-aryl) ligands: characterisation and olefin polymerisation catalysis

The report concerns expansion of the previously developed M-[O,N,C] [pyridine-2-phenolate-6-(σ-aryl)] catalyst system into rigid, coplanar bimetallic assemblies, which afford metal-metal distances that are predetermined yet amenable for cooperativity, as well as locked-in "syn" orientation of binding sites that offer the same direction of access for substrates. The binuclear complexes are generated in a regioselective manner to yield para hydrogen atoms (not ortho) at the central μ-aryl moiety, and have been characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The "anti" (showing opposite directions of access) and mononuclear analogues have also been prepared for comparison purposes. Six syn-type bimetallic derivatives of Ti, Zr and Hf have been characterised by X-ray crystallography, to reveal metal-metal separations of 6.3-6.7 Å. For ethylene and ethylene/1-octene polymerisation reactions in conjunction with trityl borate, the syn-Ti2 catalysts display superior efficiencies and produced polymers with higher Mw values than for the anti and mono-Ti congeners, thus indicating the possibility of favourable enchainment interactions and cooperative reactivity.

Dinuclear Group 4 Metal Complexes Bearing Anthracene-Bridged Bifunctional Amido-Ether Ligands: Remarkable Metal Effect and Cooperativity toward Ethylene/1-Octene Copolymerization

Two types of bifunctional amido-ether ligands (syn-L and anti-L) with the rigid anthracene skeleton were designed to support dinuclear group 4 metal complexes. All organic ligands and organometallic complexes (syn-M₂ and anti-M₂; M = Hf, Zr, and Ti) were fully characterized by ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analyses. The anti-Hf₂ complex showed two confirmations at room temperature with C₂-symmetry or S₂-symmetry that can inter-exchange, as indicated by VT NMR, while only a C₂-symmetric isomer was observed for syn-Hf₂ complex at room temperature. However, for Zr and Ti analogues, both syn and anti complexes exhibited only one conformation at room temperature. The molecular structures of complexes syn-Hf₂, anti-Hf₂, and syn-Ti₂ in the solid state were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the distances between two metal centers in syn-M₂ from 7.138 Å (syn-Ti₂) to 7.321 Å (syn-Hf₂) but a much farther separation in anti-M₂ (8.807 Å in C₂-symmetric anti-Hf₂). The mononuclear complex (2-CH₃O-C₆H₄-N-C₁₄H₉)Zr(NMe₂)₃ (mono-Zr₁) was also prepared for control experiments. In the presence of alkyl aluminum (AlEt₃) as the alkylating agent and trityl borate ([Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄]) as the co-catalyst, all metal complexes were tested for copolymerization of ethylene with 1-octene at high temperature (130 °C). The preliminary polymerization results revealed that the activity was highly dependent upon the nature of metal centers, and syn-Zr₂ showed the highest activity of 9600 kg(PE)·mol^-1 (Zr)·h^-1, which was about 17- and 2.2-fold higher than those of syn-Hf₂ and syn-Ti₂, respectively. Benefitting from both steric proximity and electronical interaction of two metal centers, syn-Zr₂ exhibited significant cooperativity in comparison to anti-Zr₂ and mono-Zr₁, with regard to activity and molecular weight and 1-octene incorporation of resultant copolymers.

Green solvent free epoxidation of olefins by a heterogenised hydrazone-dioxidotungsten(vi) coordination compound

A new mononuclear tungsten coordination compound, [WO2L(CH3OH)] (1), was synthesized by the reaction of WCl6 and H2L (H2L = (E)-4-amino-N'-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide) in methanol. Both the H2L and compound 1 were characterized by elemental analysis and UV-Vis, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic methods. The molecular structure of compound 1 was also determined by single crystal X-ray analysis which confirmed the compound is a mononuclear coordination compound of cis-dioxidotungsten(vi) containing a free amine functionality on the ligand. Compound 1 was supported on propionyl chloride-functionalized silica gel by amidification reaction to obtain a heterogeneous catalyst. The obtained heterogeneous catalyst was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and its catalytic activity was investigated in the epoxidation of olefins with hydrogen peroxide under solvent free conditions. The catalyst was successfully recovered several times and the recovered catalyst was also characterized by various methods including FT-IR, DRS, TGA, SEM and EDX analyses. The results indicated this heterogeneous catalytic system is an effective and selective catalyst for epoxidation of olefins and can be reused several times without significant change in its catalytic activity.

Highly 2,3-selective and fast living polymerization of alkyl-, alkoxy- and phenylallenes using nickel(ii) catalysts

A novel Ni(ii) catalyst was developed to initiate the polymerization of various allene monomers efficiently in a fast and living/controlled manner, and the thermodynamic and crystallization properties of the polymers were investigated.

Preparation of Pyridylamido Hafnium Complexes for Coordinative Chain Transfer Polymerization

The pyridylamido hafnium complex (I) discovered at Dow is a flagship catalyst among postmetallocenes, which are used in the polyolefin industry for PO-chain growth from a chain transfer agent, dialkylzinc. In the present work, with the aim to block a possible deactivation process in prototype compound I, the corresponding derivatives were prepared. A series of pyridylamido Hf complexes were prepared by replacing the 2,6-diisopropylphenylamido part in I with various 2,6-R2C6H3N-moieties (R = cycloheptyl, cyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, 3-pentyl, ethyl, or Ph) or by replacing 2-iPrC6H4C(H)- in I with the simple PhC(H)-moiety. The isopropyl substituent in the 2-iPrC6H4C(H)-moiety influences not only the geometry of the structures (revealed by X-ray crystallography), but also catalytic performance. In the complexes bearing the 2-iPrC6H4C(H)-moiety, the chelation framework forms a plane; however, this framework is distorted in the complexes containing the PhC(H)-moiety. The ability to incorporate α-olefin decreased upon replacing 2-iPrC6H4C(H)-with the PhC(H)-moiety. The complexes carrying the 2,6-di(cycloheptyl)phenylamido or 2,6-di(cyclohexyl)phenylamido moiety (replacing the 2,6-diisopropylphenylamido part in I) showed somewhat higher activity with greater longevity than did prototype catalyst I.

Preparation of Half- and Post-Metallocene Hafnium Complexes with Tetrahydroquinoline and Tetrahydrophenanthroline Frameworks for Olefin Polymerization

Hafnium complexes have drawn attention for their application as post-metallocene catalysts with unique performance in olefin polymerization. In this work, a series of half-metallocene HfMe₂ complexes, bearing a tetrahydroquinoline framework, as well as a series of [N^amido,N,C^aryl]HfMe₂-type post-metallocene complexes, bearing a tetrahydrophenanthroline framework, were prepared; the structures of the prepared Hf complexes were unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. When the prepared complexes were reacted with anhydrous [(C₁₈H₃₇)₂N(H)Me]⁺[B(C₆F₅)₄]⁻, desired ion-pair complexes, in which (C₁₈H₃₇)₂NMe coordinated to the Hf center, were cleanly afforded. The activated complexes generated from the half-metallocene complexes were inactive for the copolymerization of ethylene/propylene, while those generated from post-metallocene complexes were active. Complex bearing bulky isopropyl substituents (12) exhibited the highest activity. However, the activity was approximately half that of the prototype pyridylamido-Hf Dow catalyst. The comonomer incorporation capability was also inferior to that of the pyridylamido-Hf Dow catalyst. However, 12 performed well in the coordinative chain transfer polymerization performed in the presence of (octyl)₂Zn, converting all the fed (octyl)₂Zn to (polyolefinyl)₂Zn with controlled lengths of the polyolefinyl chain.

Unexpected Precatalyst σ-Ligand Effects in Phenoxyimine Zr-Catalyzed Ethylene/1-Octene Copolymerizations

Recent decades have witnessed intense research efforts aimed at developing new homogeneous olefin polymerization catalysts, with a primary focus on metal-Cl or metal-hydrocarbyl precursors. Curiously, metal-NR₂ precursors have received far less attention. In this contribution, the Zr-amido complex FI₂ZrX₂ (FI = 2,4-di- tert-butyl-6-((isobutylimino)methyl)phenolate, X = NMe₂) is found to exhibit high ethylene polymerization activity and relatively high 1-octene coenchainment selectivity (up to 7.2 mol%) after sequential activation with trimethylaluminum, then Ph₃C⁺B(C₆F₅)₄^-. In sharp contrast, catalysts with traditional hydrocarbyl ligands such as benzyl and methyl give low 1-octene incorporation (0-1.0 mol%). This unexpected selectivity persists under scaled/industrial operating conditions and was previously inaccessible with traditional metal-Cl or -hydrocarbyl precursors. NMR, X-ray diffraction, and catalytic control experiments indicate that in this case an FI ligand is abstracted from FI₂Zr(NMe₂)₂ by trimethylaluminum in the activation process to yield a catalytically active cationic mono-FIZr species. Heretofore this process was believed to serve only as a major catalyst deactivation pathway to be avoided. This work demonstrates the importance of investigating diverse precatalyst monodentate σ-ligands in developing new catalyst systems, especially for group 4 olefin polymerization catalysts.

Preparation of Pincer Hafnium Complexes for Olefin Polymerization

Pincer-type [Cnaphthyl, Npyridine, Namido]HfMe2 complex is a flagship among the post-metallocene catalysts. In this work, various pincer-type Hf-complexes were prepared for olefin polymerization. Pincer-type [Namido, Npyridine, Namido]HfMe2 complexes were prepared by reacting in situ generated HfMe4 with the corresponding ligand precursors, and the structure of a complex bearing 2,6-Et2C6H3Namido moieties was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. When the ligand precursors of [(CH3)R2Si-C5H3N-C(H)PhN(H)Ar (R = Me or Ph, Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) were treated with in situ generated HfMe4, pincer-type [Csilylmethyl, Npyridine, Namido]HfMe2 complexes were afforded by formation of Hf-CH2Si bond. Pincer-type [Cnaphthyl, Sthiophene, Namido]HfMe2 complex, where the pyridine moiety in the flagship catalyst was replaced with a thiophene unit, was not generated when the corresponding ligand precursor was treated with HfMe4. Instead, the [Sthiophene, Namido]HfMe3-type complex was obtained with no formation of the Hf-Cnaphthyl bond. A series of pincer-type [Cnaphthyl, Npyridine, Nalkylamido]HfMe2 complexes was prepared where the arylamido moiety in the flagship catalyst was replaced with alkylamido moieties (alkyl = iPr, cyclohexyl, tBu, adamantyl). Structures of the complexes bearing isopropylamido and adamantylamido moieties were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Most of the complexes cleanly generated the desired ion-pair complexes when treated with an equivalent amount of [(C18H37)2N(H)Me]+[B(C6F5)4]-, which showed negligible activity in olefin polymerization. Some complexes bearing bulky substituents showed moderate activities, even though the desired ion-pair complexes were not cleanly afforded.
