Transitions between Lamellar Orientations in Shear Flow

The relationship between structure and rheology in a three-dimensional sheared lamellar mesophase

The evolution of a lamellar mesophase from an initially disordered state under shear is examined using simulations of a mesoscale model based on a concentration field ψ that distinguishes the hydrophilic and hydrophobic components. The Landau-Ginzburg free-energy functional is augmented by a term that is minimised for sinusoidal modulations in the concentration field with wavelength λ = (2π/k), and the dynamical equations are the model H equations. The structure and rheology are determined by the relative magnitudes of the diffusion time for coarsening, (λ²/D) and the inverse of the strain rate ^-1, and the Ericksen number, which is the ratio of the shear stress and the layer stiffness. When the diffusion time is small compared with the inverse of the strain rate, there is a local formation of misaligned layers, which are deformed by the imposed flow. There is near-perfect ordering with isolated defects at low values of the Ericksen number, but the defects result in a significant increase in viscosity due to the high layer stiffness. At high values of the Ericksen number, the concentration field is deformed by the mean shear before layers form via diffusion. Cylindrical structures aligned along the flow direction form after about 8-10 strain units, and these evolve into layers with disorder through diffusion perpendicular to the flow. The layers are not perfectly ordered, even after hundreds of strain units, due to the creation and destruction of defects via shear. The excess viscosity is low because the layer stiffness is small compared with the applied shear at a high Ericksen number. This study provides guidance on how the material parameters and imposed flow can be tailored to achieve the desired rheological behaviour.

Symmetric Diblock Copolymers in Cylindrical Confinement: A Way to Chiral Morphologies?

We investigate the confinement-induced formation and stability of helix morphologies in lamella-forming AB diblock copolymers via large-scale, particle-based, single-chain-in-mean-field simulations. Such helix structures are rarely observed in bulk or thin films. Structure formation is induced by quenching incompatibility, χN, from a disordered morphology. If the surfaces of the cylindrical confinement do not prefer one component over the other, we observe that stacked lamellae, with their normals along the cylinder axis, are the preferred morphology. Kinetically, this morphology initially forms close to the cylinder surface, whereas the spontaneous, spinodal microphase separation in the cylinder's interior gives rise to a microemulsion-like morphology, riddled with defects and no directional order. Subsequently, the ordered morphology on the cylinder surface progresses inward, pervading the entire volume. In case that the cylindrical pore is only partially filled, the additional confinement along the cylinder axis generally gives rise to incommensurability between the equilibrium spacing of stacked lamellae and the cylinder height. To accommodate this mismatch, the lamella normals will tilt away from the cylinder axis and generate helices of lamellae on the surface of the cylinder. Again, this order progresses from the cylinder surface inward, generating a chiral morphology. Because the spacing between the internal AB interfaces decreases upon approaching the helix center, the concomitant stress results in a decrease in the number of lamellae and the formation of unique dislocation defects. This type of chiral defect morphology is reproducibly formed by the kinetics of structure formation in partly filled cylindrical pores with nonpreferential surfaces and may find applications in photonic applications.

Simulation Study of Process-Controlled Supramolecular Block Copolymer Phase Separation with Reversible Reaction Algorithm

A supramolecular diblock copolymer formed by reversible bonds between the two blocks shows a rich microphase separation behavior and has great application potential in stimuli-responsive materials. We propose a novel method to describe supramolecular reactions in dissipative particle dynamics, which includes a reversible reaction to accurately reproduce the strength, saturation, and dynamic properties of the reversible bonds in the simulations. The thermodynamic properties and dynamic processes of the supramolecular diblock copolymer melts in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states were studied using this method. The simulation results show that the method can faithfully characterize phase behaviors and dynamic properties of supramolecular diblock copolymer melts, especially in a non-equilibrium state, which provides a novel tool to unveil self-assembly mechanism and describe the properties of supramolecular block copolymers.

Beyond the Rosenfeld Equation: Computation of Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra for Anisotropic Solutions

The difference in absorption of left and right circularly polarized light by chiral molecules can be described by the Rosenfeld equation for isotropic samples. It allows the assignment of the absolute stereochemistry by comparing experimental and computationally derived spectra. Despite the simple form of the Rosenfeld equation, its evaluation in the infrared regime remained challenging, as the contribution from the magnetic dipole operator is zero within the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation. In order to resolve this issue, "beyond BO" theories had to be developed, among which Stephen's magnetic field perturbation (MFP) approach offers a computationally easily accessible form. In this work, optical activity is discussed for cylindrically symmetric solutions, which cannot be described anymore by Rosenfeld's equation due to broken spherical symmetry. Mathematical properties of natural and electric-field induced anisotropies are discussed on the basis of the gauge-independent theoretical framework of Buckingham and Dunn. The issue of achiral noise arising from external field perturbations is considered, and potential remedies are introduced. Natural anisotropic vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) equations are solved numerically by applying the MFP approach within the Hartree-Fock (HF) formalism. Properties of anisotropic VCD spectra are discussed for R-(+)-methyloxirane and (1 S,2 S)-cyclopropane-1,2-dicarbonitrile. In particular, by using a group theoretical argument, a gauge-independent lower bound for the quadrupole contribution of C₂-symmetric molecules can be identified, which allows the importance of additional quadrupole terms in anisotropic VCD spectra calculation to be assessed.
