Spontaneous Formation of Highly Stable Nanoparticle Supercrystals Driven by a Covalent Bonding Interaction

Esterification-Induced Spontaneous Deposition of Nanoparticle Monolayers on Substrates with Percolation Network Morphology

Nanoparticle monolayers (NPMLs) exhibit unique collective properties that are highly desirable for applications in sensors, catalysts, and optics. However, their practical use is often hindered by structural instability, especially when they are exposed to solvents. In this study, we developed a method for the spontaneous deposition of gold nanoparticle monolayers (AuNPMLs) on silicon substrates via covalent bonding interactions that provides excellent structural stability in solvents with varying polarities. The esterification reaction between carboxyl-functionalized gold nanoparticles and alkyl-chloride-functionalized silicon substrates spontaneously forms AuNPMLs on the substrate in which single-crystalline domains are interconnected, forming a percolation network morphology. The ex situ scanning electron microscopy measurements show that the surface coverage of AuNPMLs rapidly increases up to ca. 60% during the initial 10 min, followed by gradual growth and saturation at ca. 70% at 360 min of deposition time. On the other hand, the single-crystalline domain size reaches its maximum at 45 min and then gradually decreases, which may be attributed to the desorption of AuNPs by the hydrolysis of ester bonds. The reflectance spectra of AuNPMLs showed the red shift as the deposition time increases up to 45 min with a subsequent blue shift thereafter, which is consistent with the change of the single-crystalline domain size with the deposition time. The covalent bonding interaction-mediated nanoparticle deposition method can be used to form stable AuNPMLs with controlled surface coverage and domain size, allowing for fine control of the optical properties and possibly other properties. The excellent structural stability of AuNPMLs and their controlled properties may provide new opportunities for practical applications of NPMLs.

Nanoparticle Superlattices Driven by Linker-Mediated Covalent Bonding Interaction

The stability of the nanoparticle superlattice (NPSL) is essential for realizing its broad spectrum of potential applications. Here, we report a linker-mediated covalent bonding interaction method for the synthesis of highly stable NPSLs. Adipic acid is used as a linker molecule which connects two Au NPs functionalized with 6-mercaptohexanol through esterification reactions in the presence of H2SO4. As-prepared NPSLs are mostly fcc Wulff polyhedra with a fairly narrow size distribution and are highly stable in solvents of different polarities and pHs (0-14) as well as in dry conditions and at temperatures as high as 175 °C. The formation of NPSLs involves random homogeneous nucleation simultaneously accompanied by growth, a gradual change of the growth mode from reaction-controlled to diffusion-controlled with time, and the oriented attachments of small crystals. The size of the NPSL can be easily tuned by the concentration of linker molecules and the reaction temperature.

Nanoparticle Self-Assembly: From Design Principles to Complex Matter to Functional Materials

The creation of matter with varying degrees of complexities and desired functions is one of the ultimate targets of self-assembly. The ability to regulate the complex interactions between the individual components is essential in achieving this target. In this direction, the initial success of controlling the pathways and final thermodynamic states of a self-assembly process is promising. Despite the progress made in the field, there has been a growing interest in pushing the limits of self-assembly processes. The main inception of this interest is that the intended self-assembled state, with varying complexities, may not be "at equilibrium (or at global minimum)", rendering free energy minimization unsuitable to form the desired product. Thus, we believe that a thorough understanding of the design principles as well as the ability to predict the outcome of a self-assembly process is essential to form a collection of the next generation of complex matter. The present review highlights the potent role of finely tuned interparticle interactions in nanomaterials to achieve the preferred self-assembled structures with the desired properties. We believe that bringing the design and prediction to nanoparticle self-assembly processes will have a similar effect as retrosynthesis had on the logic of chemical synthesis. Along with the guiding principles, the review gives a summary of the different types of products created from nanoparticle assemblies and the functional properties emerging from them. Finally, we highlight the reasonable expectations from the field and the challenges lying ahead in the creation of complex and evolvable matter.

A General Approach to Stabilize Nanocrystal Superlattices by Covalently Bonded Ligands

Self-assembled inorganic nanocrystal (NC) superlattices are powerful material platforms with diverse structures and emergent functionalities. However, their applications suffer from the low structural stability against solvents and other stimuli, due to the weak interparticle interactions. Existing strategies to stabilize NC superlattices typically require the design and incorporation of special ligands prior to self-assembly and are only applicable to superlattices of certain NCs, ligands, and structures. Here we report a general method to stabilize superlattices of various NC compositions and structures via strong, covalently bonded ligands. The core is the use of light-triggered, nitrene-based cross-linkers that do not interfere the self-assembly process while nonspecifically and effectively bonding the native ligands of NCs. The stabilized 2D and 3D superlattices of metal, semiconductor, and magnetic NCs retain their structures when being exposed to solvents of different polarities (from toluene to water) and show high thermal stability and mechanical rigidity. This can further stabilize binary NC superlattices, beyond those achievable in previous methods. Stabilized superlattices show robust and reproducible functionalities, for instance, when serving as reusable substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. These results create more possibilities in exploiting the impressive library of NC superlattices in a broad scope of applications.

Coupled plasmons in aluminum nanoparticle superclusters

Metallic nanoparticles can self-assemble into highly ordered superclusters for potential applications in optics and catalysis. Here, using first-principles quantum mechanical calculations, we investigate plasmon coupling in superclusters made of aluminum nanoparticles. More specifically, we study/compare the plasmon coupling in close-pack FCC (face-centered-cubic) and non-close-pack BCC (body-centered-cubic) superclusters. We demonstrate that the optical properties of these clusters can be fine-tuned with respect to the packing arrangement. As a key result of this work, plasmon coupling is found to be enhanced (diminished) in FCC (BCC) superclusters due to constructive (destructive) plasmon coupling. Our quantum calculations would help in the design of Al-based superclusters beneficial for plasmonics applications.

Nanostructured surfaces with designed optical functionalities, such as metasurfaces, allow efficient harvesting of light at the nanoscale, enhancing light-matter interactions for a wide variety of material combinations. Exploiting light-driven matter excitations in these artificial materials opens up a new dimension in the conversion and management of energy at the nanoscale. In this review, we outline the impact, opportunities, applications, and challenges of optical metasurfaces in converting the energy of incoming photons into frequency-shifted photons, phonons, and energetic charge carriers. A myriad of opportunities await for the utilization of the converted energy. Here we cover the most pertinent aspects from a fundamental nanoscopic viewpoint all the way to applications.

Facile preparation of uniform-sized covalent organic framework nanoflowers as versatile sample-pretreatment platforms for sensitive and specific determination of hazardous substances

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) have lately received extensive interest for their outstanding performance, especially to adsorption of hazards, while easy-preparation of uniform-sized COFs hold a great challenge. This research presented a simple synthesis method of flower-shaped COF (nanoflower) with strong hydrophobic surface at room temperature. Taking advantage of its easy-prepared and uniform-sized features, we proposed a versatile and efficient sample-pretreatment platform by employing the nanoflower COF for affinity adsorption of various hydrophobic biotoxins and further surface imprinting for selective enrichment of specific biotoxin (COF@MIP), respectively. The COF@MIP was integrating COF with molecular imprinting technique to achieve selective identification of sterigmatocystin (ST) with high specificity and sensitivity. They both exhibited well reusability, preserving 81% of initial activity after being used for six cycles. The as-prepared materials coupled with offline solid phase extraction (SPE) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were successfully applied to five common cereals with good recoveries in the range of 70.3-100.7%. Moreover, the principle of versatile sample pretreatment and detection platform based on the facile-prepared and uniform-sized COF nanoflower would be easily extended to other hazards. It provided a prospective approach for the pretreatment and determination of hazardous substances with low level in complex sample matrix.

From Molecules to Frameworks to Superframework Crystals

Building chemical structures of complexity and functionality approaching the level of biological systems is an ongoing challenge. A general synthetic strategy is proposed by which progressive levels of complexity are achieved through the building block approach whereby molecularly defined constructs at one level serve as constituent units of the next level, all being linked through strong bonds-"augmented reticular chemistry". Specifically, current knowledge of linking metal complexes and organic molecules into reticular frameworks is applied here to linking the crystals of these frameworks into supercrystals (superframeworks). This strategy allows for the molecular control exercised on the molecular regime to be translated into higher augmentation levels to produce systems capable of dynamics and complex functionality far exceeding current materials.
