Fast-Curing of Liquid Crystal Thermosets Enabled by End-Groups Regulation and In Situ Monitoring by Triboelectric Spectroscopy

The development of high-performance polymer is crucial for the fabrication of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) used in extreme conditions. Liquid crystal polyarylate thermosets (LCTs) demonstrate great potential as triboelectric material by virtue of exceptional comprehensive properties. However, there are only a few specific end-groups like phenylethynyl matching the LCT polycondensation temperature (above 300 °C). Moreover, the excellent properties of LCTs rely on the crosslinked network formed with long curing time at high temperature, restricting their further application in triboelectric material. Herein, a fast-curing LCT is designed by terminating with 4-maleimidophenol possessing appropriate reactivity. The resultant LCT (MA-LC-MA) exhibits much lower polycondensation temperature (250-270 °C) and curing temperature of 300 °C within only 1 min compared to typical LCTs (cured at 370 °C for 1 h). Furthermore, the cured MA-LC-MA retains a high glass transition temperature of 135 °C, storage modulus of 6 MPa even at 350 °C, and great electrical output performance. Additionally, triboelectric measurement related to the dielectric properties that vary with crosslinked network is innovatively utilized as an analysis technique of curing progress. This work provides a new strategy to design high-performance TENGs and promotes the development of next generation thermosets in extreme conditions.

An Encapsulation-Free and Hierarchical Porous Triboelectric Scaffold with Dynamic Hydrophilicity for Efficient Cartilage Regeneration

Tissue engineering and electrotherapy are two promising methods to promote tissue repair. However, their integration remains an underexplored area, because their requirements on devices are usually distinct. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have shown great potential to develop self-powered devices. However, due to their susceptibility to moisture, TENGs have to be encapsulated in vivo. Therefore, existing TENGs cannot be employed as tissue engineering scaffolds, which require direct interaction with surrounding cells. Here, the concept of triboelectric scaffolds (TESs) is proposed. Poly(glycerol sebacate), a biodegradable and relatively hydrophobic elastomer, is selected as the matrix of TESs. Each hydrophobic micropore in multi-hierarchical porous TESs efficiently serves as a moisture-resistant working unit of TENGs. Integration of tons of micropores ensures the electrotherapy ability of TESs in vivo without encapsulation. Originally hydrophobic TESs are degraded by surface erosion and transformed into hydrophilic surfaces, facilitating their role as tissue engineering scaffolds. Notably, TESs seeded with chondrocytes obtain dense and large matured cartilages after subcutaneous implantation in nude mice. Importantly, rabbits with osteochondral defects receiving TES implantation show favorable hyaline cartilage regeneration and complete cartilage healing. This work provides a promising electronic biomedical device and will inspire a series of new in vivo applications.

Aqueous-Aqueous Triboelectric Nanogenerators Empowered Multifunctional Wound Healing System with Intensified Current Output for Accelerating Infected Wound Repair

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as promising devices for generating self-powered therapeutic electrical stimulation over multiple aspects of wound healing. However, the challenge of achieving full 100% contact in conventional TENGs presents a substantial hurdle in the quest for higher current output, which is crucial for further improving healing efficacy. Here, a novel multifunctional wound healing system is presented by integrating the aqueous-aqueous triboelectric nanogenerators (A-A TENGs) with a functionalized conductive hydrogel, aimed at advancing infected wound therapy. The A-A TENGs are founded on a principle of 100% contact interface and efficient post-contact separation of the immiscible interface within the aqueous two-phase system (ATPS), enhancing charge transfer and subsequently increasing current performance. Leveraging this intensified current output, this system demonstrates efficient therapeutic efficacies over infected wounds both in vitro and in vivo, including stimulating fibroblast migration and proliferation, boosting angiogenesis, enhancing collagen deposition, eradicating bacteria, and reducing inflammatory cells. Moreover, the conductive hydrogel ensures the uniformity and integrity of the electric field covering the wound site, and exhibits multiple synergistic therapeutic effects. With the capability to realize accelerated wound healing, the developed "A-A TENGs empowered multifunctional wound healing system" presenting an excellent prospect in clinical wound therapy.

Highly Bioactive MXene-M2-Exosome Nanocomposites Promote Angiogenic Diabetic Wound Repair through Reconstructing High Glucose-Derived Immune Inhibition

The repair of diabetic wounds remains challenging, primarily due to the high-glucose-derived immune inhibition which often leads to the excessive inflammatory response, impaired angiogenesis, and heightened susceptibility to infection. However, the means to reduce the immunosuppression and regulate the conversion of M2 phenotype macrophages under a high-glucose microenvironment using advanced biomaterials for diabetic wounds are not yet fully understood. Herein, we report two-dimensional carbide (MXene)-M2 macrophage exosome (Exo) nanohybrids (FM-Exo) for promoting diabetic wound repair by overcoming the high-glucose-derived immune inhibition. FM-Exo showed the sustained release of M2 macrophage-derived exosomes (M2-Exo) up to 7 days and exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. In the high-glucose microenvironment, relative to the single Exo, FM-Exo could significantly induce the optimized M2a/M2c polarization ratio of macrophages by activating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, promoting the proliferation, migration of fibroblasts, and angiogenic ability of endothelial cells. In the diabetic full-thickness wound model, FM-Exo effectively regulated the polarization status of macrophages and promoted their transition to the M2 phenotype, thereby inhibiting inflammation, promoting angiogenesis through VEGF secretion, and improving proper collagen deposition. As a result, the healing process was accelerated, leading to a better healing outcome with reduced scarring. Therefore, this study introduced a promising approach to address diabetic wounds by developing bioactive nanomaterials to regulate immune inhibition in a high-glucose environment.

Hybrid Cross-Linking to Construct Functional Elastomers

ConspectusElastomers have been extensively used in diverse industrial sectors such as footwear, seals, tires, and cable jacketing and have attracted more and more attention in emerging fields such as regenerative medicine, soft robotics, and stretchable electronics. Global consumption of natural and synthetic elastomers amounted to nearly 27 million metric tons in 2020. In addition, to further enhance the common properties of elastomers, it is highly desired to endow elastomers with functionalities such as reprocessability, biomimetic mechanical properties, self-healing ability, bioactivity, and electrical conductivity, which will significantly broaden their applications. The covalent or noncovalent cross-linked structure is the essential factor for the elasticity of elastomers. Traditional elastomers usually comprise a single type of cross-linked molecular network, for which it is difficult to modulate the properties and introduce functionalities. Inspired by the simultaneous existence of multiple cross-linked structures in proteins, researchers have employed a hybrid cross-linking strategy to construct elastomers. Various noncovalent interactions (e.g., hydrogen bonds, metal-ligand coordination, ionic interactions, and chain folding) and dynamic covalent bonds (e.g., disulfide bonds, oxime-urethane bonds, and urea bonds) have been integrated in elastomers. Accordingly, the properties and functionalities of elastomers can be tuned by regulating the types, ratios, and distributions of cross-links. The hybrid cross-linking strategy provides a versatile and effective way to construct diverse functional elastomers for broad applications in various important fields.In this Account, we present our recent progress on functional elastomers constructed by a hybrid cross-linking strategy, including their design, preparation, properties, and diverse applications. First, we provide a brief introduction of the basic concept of functional elastomers and outline general strategies and mechanics for functional elastomers constructed by hybrid cross-linking. Then, we classify hybrid cross-linked elastomers by their design strategies, including multiple cross-linking, topological design, chemical coupling, and multiple networks. The relationships between the functionalities and hybrid cross-linked structures are summarized. At the same time, we also introduce diverse applications of these hybrid cross-linked elastomers in biomedicine, flexible electronics, soft robotics, 3D printing, and so on. Finally, we discuss our perspective on open challenges and future development trends of this rapidly evolving field. This Account highlighting the diverse hybrid cross-linked elastomers not only provides insights into strategies for elastomer functionalization but also provides new ideas for material design and inspires a variety of new applications.

Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Enhanced Wound Healing

Wound healing is a highly orchestrated biological process characterized by sequential phases involving inflammation, proliferation, and tissue remodeling, and the role of endogenous electrical signals in regulating these phases has been highlighted. Recently, external electrostimulation has been shown to enhance these processes by promoting cell migration, extracellular matrix formation, and growth factor release while suppressing pro-inflammatory signals and reducing the risk of infection. Among the innovative approaches, piezoelectric and triboelectric nanogenerators have emerged as the next generation of flexible and wireless electronics designed for energy harvesting and efficiently converting mechanical energy into electrical power. In this review, we discuss recent advances in the emerging field of nanogenerators for harnessing electrical stimulation to accelerate wound healing. We elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of wound healing and relevant bioelectric physiology, as well as the principles underlying each nanogenerator technology, and review their preclinical applications. In addition, we address the prominent challenges and outline the future prospects for this emerging era of electrical wound-healing devices.

Highly resilient and fatigue-resistant poly(4-methyl-ε-caprolactone) porous scaffold fabricated via thiol-yne photo-crosslinking/salt-templating for soft tissue regeneration

Elastomeric scaffolds, individually customized to mimic the structural and mechanical properties of natural tissues have been used for tissue regeneration. In this regard, polyester elastic scaffolds with tunable mechanical properties and exceptional biological properties have been reported to provide mechanical support and structural integrity for tissue repair. Herein, poly(4-methyl-ε-caprolactone) (PMCL) was first double-terminated by alkynylation (PMCL-DY) as a liquid precursor at room temperature. Subsequently, three-dimensional porous scaffolds with custom shapes were fabricated from PMCL-DY via thiol-yne photocrosslinking using a practical salt template method. By manipulating the M_n of the precursor, the modulus of compression of the scaffold was easily adjusted. As evidenced by the complete recovery from 90% compression, the rapid recovery rate of >500 mm min^-1, the extremely low energy loss coefficient of <0.1, and the superior fatigue resistance, the PMCL20-DY porous scaffold was confirmed to harbor excellent elastic properties. In addition, the high resilience of the scaffold was confirmed to endow it with a minimally invasive application potential. In vitro testing revealed that the 3D porous scaffold was biocompatible with rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs), inducing BMSCs to differentiate into chondrogenic cells. In addition, the elastic porous scaffold demonstrated good regenerative efficiency in a 12-week rabbit cartilage defect model. Thus, the novel polyester scaffold with adaptable mechanical properties may have extensive applications in soft tissue regeneration.
