Abstract
The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Abstract
A new family of group 4 permethylpentalene (C8Me62-; Pn*) aryloxide and alkoxide complexes have been synthesised and fully characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction; (η8-C8Me6)Zr(OR)2 (R = tBu (1), 2,6-Me-C6H3 (2), 2,6-iPr-C6H3 (3) and 4-OMe-C6H4 (4)), (η8-C8Me6)Zr (OR) (R = 2,6-tBu-C6H3 (5) and 2,6-tBu-4-Me-C6H2 (6)), (η8-C8Me6)ZrCp(OR) (R = tBu (7), 2,6-Me-C6H3 (8) and 2,6-iPr-C6H3 (9)), (η8-C8Me6)TiCp(O-2,6-Me-C6H3) (10) and (η8-C8Me6)ZrCpMe(OR) (R = 2,6-Me-C6H3 (11), 2,6-iPr-C6H3 (12) and 2,4-tBu-C6H3 (13)). 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12 were studied as initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of l-lactide, and 2, 3, 6, 7 and 10 were studied as initiators for the ROP of rac-lactide. 3 was found to be the most active initiator for the ROP of l-lactide (kobs = 0.35 h-1) and 2 for the ROP of rac-lactide (kobs = 0.21 h-1). These initiators produced isotactic PLA for the ROP of l-lactide and moderately heterotactic enriched (maximum Pr of 0.69) or atactic PLA for the ROP of rac-lactide with polymer chains consisting of polylactic acid repeat units with -OR and -OH end groups.

Abstract
Bio-derived furan- and diacid-derived cyclic carbonates have been synthesized in high yields from terminal epoxides and CO2 . Furthermore, four highly substituted terpene-derived cyclic carbonates were isolated in good yields with excellent diastereoselectivity in some cases. Eleven new cyclic carbonates derived from 10-undecenoic acid under mild reaction conditions were prepared, providing the corresponding carbonate products in excellent yields. The catalyst system also performed the conversion of an epoxidized fatty acid n-pentyl ester into a cyclic carbonate under relatively mild reaction conditions (80 °C, 20 bar, 24 h). This bis(cyclic carbonate) was obtained in high yields and with different cis/trans ratios depending on the co-catalyst used. An allyl alcohol by-product was only observed as a minor product when bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride was used as co-catalyst. Finally, two cyclic carbonates were used as building blocks for the preparation of non-isocyanate poly(hydroxy)urethanes by reaction with 1,4-diaminobutane.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of constrained geometry scandium permethylindenyl chloride, aryloxide and borohydride complexes Me2SB(tBuN,I*)Sc(Cl)(THF) (1), Me2SB(tBuN,I*)Sc(O-2,6-iPr-C6H3)(THF) (2), Me2SB(tBuN,I*)Sc(O-2,4-tBu-C6H3)(THF) (3) and Me2SB(tBuN,I*)Sc(BH4)(THF) (4) are reported. The activity of complexes 1-4 as initiators for the ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) of l- and rac-lactide is presented. The ROP of l- and rac-lactide using complexes 2 and 3 show first-order dependence on monomer concentration, and produced isotactic polylactide (PLA) and moderately heterotactic PLA (Pr = 0.68-0.72), respectively. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical molecular weights of PLA (Mn) and relatively narrow dispersities (Mw/Mn < 1.20) were obtained. Complex 4 showed higher activity for ROP of l- and rac-lactide than 2 or 3, with second-order dependence on monomer concentrations. However, poorly controlled molecular weights and lower heteroselectivity (Pr = 0.61-0.67) were observed. The effect of temperature and catalyst concentration for the ROP of l-lactide using 2 and 3 was also studied.

Abstract
Based on various comparable salen ligands, three synthesized CuIINaI-complexes present efficient catalytic activities for the coupling and cyclization reaction of 1,2-diaminopropane with nitriles towards 2-imidazolines. The catalytic results show that salen ligands with an electron-donating substituent and small steric hindrance improve the catalytic activity.

Abstract
Rare-earth metal complexes usually exhibit high activities in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide, yet only a few scandium complexes have shown satisfactory activity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of chiral anilido-oxazoline-supported scandium and yttrium complexes that exhibit high activity in the ROP of racemic lactide (rac-LA). Complexes La-f-Ln(CH2SiMe3)2THF (La-f = 2-(2,6-R2PhN)-phenyl-4-(S)-R'-oxazoline; for 1a-f: L = La-f, Ln = Sc; for 2a-d: L = La-d, Ln = Y) were synthesized via the convenient one-pot reaction of Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Y) with the corresponding proligands. The crystal structures of 1a, 1d, 1e, and 1f were isostructural, adopting a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. Sc complexes 1 showed outstanding activity in the ROP of rac-LA with heteroselectivity. TOFs of up to 720 h-1 and 2910 h-1 were obtained in THF at room temperature and toluene at 60 °C, respectively. To our knowledge, these are the highest activities reported for Sc systems. Y complexes 2 showed higher activity and heteroselectivity than the Sc complexes, with TOFs of up to 1176 h-1 in THF at room temperature. Compared with the ortho-substituent on the anilido moiety, the bulky substituent at the chiral center of the oxazoline ring had a greater effect on controlling the heteroselectivity.

Abstract
A new lanthanum heteroscorpionate complex has shown exceptional catalytic activity for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and carbon dioxide. This catalyst system also promotes the reaction of bio-based epoxides to give an important class of bis(cyclic carbonates) that can be further used for the production of bio-derived non-isocyanate polyurethanes. The catalytic process requires low catalyst loading and mild reaction conditions for the synthesis of a wide range of cyclic carbonates.

Abstract
Yttrium and aluminium complexes of two dithiodiolate ligands that feature different bridges (CF3)2C(OH)CH2SRSCH2C(OH)(CF3)2 (L(1)-H2, R = CH2CH2 and L(2)-H2, R = C6H4) were synthesized in good yields by reacting tris(silylamide)yttrium or trimethylaluminium with one equivalent of the proligand. All complexes were characterized by NMR and elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray structural analysis was also performed for one of the yttrium complexes. The catalytic activities of the four complexes in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and rac-lactide have been investigated. Furthermore, DOSY experiment and DFT calculations have been carried out to determine the structure of the isopropoxo derivative of the complex L(2)Y amide.
