Highly Diverse Bonding between Two U3+ Ions When Ligated by a Flexible Polypyrrolic Macrocycle

Weak Bimetal Coupling-Assisted MN4 Catalyst for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Reduction Reaction

The design of multimetal catalysts holds immense significance for efficient CO2 capture and its conversion into economically valuable chemicals. Herein, heterobimetallic catalysts (MiMo)L were exploited for the CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The octadentate Pacman-like polypyrrolic ligand (H4L) accommodates two metal ions (Mo, W, Nd, and U) inside (Mi) and outside (Mo) its month, rendering a weak bimetal coupling-assisted MN4 catalytically active site. Adsorption reactions have access to energetically stable coordination modes of -OCO, -OOC, and -(OCO)2, where the donor atom(s) are marked in bold. Among all of the species, (UiMoo)L releases the most energy. Along CO2RR, it favors to produce CO. The high-efficiency CO2 reduction is attributed to the size matching of U with the ligand mouth and the effective manipulation of the electron density of both ligand and bimetals. The mechanism in which heterobimetals synergetically capture and reduce CO2 has been postulated. This establishes a reference in elaborating on the complicated heterogeneous catalysis.

A crystalline tri-thorium cluster with σ-aromatic metal-metal bonding

Metal-metal bonding is a widely studied area of chemistry^1-3, and has become a mature field spanning numerous d transition metal and main group complexes^4-7. By contrast, actinide-actinide bonding, which is predicted to be weak⁸, is currently restricted to spectroscopically detected gas-phase U₂ and Th₂ (refs. ^9,10), U₂H₂ and U₂H₄ in frozen matrices at 6-7 K (refs. ^11,12), or fullerene-encapsulated U₂ (ref. ¹³). Furthermore, attempts to prepare thorium-thorium bonds in frozen matrices have produced only ThH_n (n = 1-4)¹⁴. Thus, there are no isolable actinide-actinide bonds under normal conditions. Computational investigations have explored the probable nature of actinide-actinide bonding¹⁵, concentrating on localized σ-, π-, and δ-bonding models paralleling d transition metal analogues, but predictions in relativistic regimes are challenging and have remained experimentally unverified. Here, we report thorium-thorium bonding in a crystalline cluster, prepared and isolated under normal experimental conditions. The cluster exhibits a diamagnetic, closed-shell singlet ground state with a valence-delocalized three-centre-two-electron σ-aromatic bond^16,17 that is counter to the focus of previous theoretical predictions. The experimental discovery of actinide σ-aromatic bonding adds to main group and d transition metal analogues, extending delocalized σ-aromatic bonding to the heaviest elements in the periodic table and to principal quantum number six, and constitutes a new approach to elaborate actinide-actinide bonding.

Relativistic DFT Probe for Reaction Energies and Electronic/Bonding Properties of Polypyrrolic Hetero-Bimetallic Actinide Complexes: Effects of Uranyl endo-Oxo Functionalization

A series of hetero-bimetallic actinide complexes of the Schiff-base polypyrrolic macrocycle (L), featuring cation-cation interactions (CCIs), were systematically investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvated complex [(THF)(OU^VIOU^IV)(THF)(L)]²⁺ has high reaction free energy (Δ_rG), and its replacement with electron-donating iodine promotes the reaction thermodynamics to obtain uranyl iodide [(I)(OU^VIOU^IV)(I)(L)]²⁺ (U^VI-U^IV). Retaining this coordination geometry, calculations have been extended to other An(IV) (An = Th, Pa, Np, Pu), i.e., for the substitution of U(IV) to obtain U^VI-An^IV. As a consequence, the reaction free energy is appreciably lowered, suggesting the thermodynamic feasibility for the experimental synthesis of these bimetallic complexes. Among all U^VI-An^IV, the electron-spin density and high-lying occupied orbitals of U^VI-Pa^IV show a large extent of electron transfer from electron-rich Pa(IV) to electron-deficient U(VI), leading to a more stable U^V-Pa^V oxidation state. Additionally, the shortest bond distance and the comparatively negative E_int of the Pa-O_endo bond suggest more positive and negative charges (Q) of Pa and endo-oxo atoms, respectively. As a result of the enhanced Pa-O_endo bond and strong CCI in U^VI-Pa^IV along with the corresponding lowest reaction free energy among all of the optimized complexes, uranyl species is a better candidate for the experimental synthesis in the ultimate context of environmental remediation.

Main-Group Metals Stabilized Polypyrrolic Uranyl(V) Complexes via Cation-Cation Interaction with the Uranyl exo-Oxo Atom: A Relativistic Density Functional Theory Study

To explore the innovative uranyl(V) complexes by deeply understanding their coordination stability, relativistic density functional theory calculations have been performed to investigate the experimentally reported [(py)(R₂AlOU^VO)(py)(H₂L)] [R = Me (1), ⁱBu (2)] and [{(py)₃MOU^VO}(py)(H₂L)] [M = Li (3), Na (4), K (5)] and their uranyl(VI) counterparts. Structural and topological analyses along with transformation-reaction energies and redox potentials were systematically studied. Geometrical and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analyses implied a linear U-O_exo-M feature in 1-3 and a bent one in 4 and 5. The calculated free energies (Δ_rG) of reactions transforming 1/2 into 3/4/5 confirmed a higher stability of the latter ones, which were further corroborated by their reduction potentials (E⁰). The E⁰ value of 5 versus uranyl(VI) is close to its experimental value, particularly in solvation with spin-orbit coupling. The highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of uranyl(V) and uranyl(VI) have predominant U(5fδ) character. Compared to mononuclear uranyl(VI), the coordination of aluminum and alkali metals to uranyl exo-oxo significantly contributes to the stabilization of uranyl(V) by altering the E⁰ value from -1.59 to -0.85, -0.91, -1.33, -1.50, and -1.46 V, respectively. The calculation results show a more positive E⁰ than that of the precursor 6^VI/6 without exo-oxo coordination. The calculated E⁰ values of 3-5 are certainly more negative than those of 1 and 2. The alkali metals were found to activate U═O bonds more easily/readily than aluminum by coordination to the exo-oxo atom. In brief, the uranyl exo-oxo cation-cation-interaction enhanced the reduction ability from its uranyl(VI) analogue and raised the stability of the U^V center.

Stronger Hydration of Eu(III) Impedes Its Competition against Am(III) in Binding with N-donor Extractants

The significance of understanding the interaction between actinide(III)/lanthanide(III) (An(III)/Ln(III)) and N-donor extractants lies in the importance of efficient An³⁺/Ln³⁺ separation in advanced nuclear fuel cycles and the high expectation of the application of N-donor extractants. This work reports a density functional theory study aiming at a plausible explanation of the origin of the selectivity of the ligands in An³⁺/Ln³⁺ separation and an evaluation of the influence of the bridging groups of typical N-donor extractants. Five bis(triazine) N-donor ligands were considered, differing in their denticity dictated by their bridging groups and in the flexibility of these bridging groups. The results showed much stronger hydration of Eu(III) in comparison to Am(III) in the ligand exchange of aqua ligands by N-donor ligands, while there was a moderate difference in their interaction strengths with the N-donor ligands. This implicated that the distinct difficulty in desolvating Eu(III) and Am(III) may govern their selectivity in liquid-liquid extraction. The analysis of the role of the bridging groups of the ligands confirmed the importance of a ligand to be equipped with preorganized binding sites to minimize the perturbation of entropy. We tentatively propose that this conclusion may hold in the explanation of the low selectivity of oxygenated extractants and the high selectivity of extractants with soft donors in An³⁺/Ln³⁺ separation.

Evaluation of Influencing Factors in Tetravalent Uranium Complex-Mediated CO2 Functionalization by Density Functional Theory

The functionalization of CO₂ mediated by a series of U(IV) mixed-sandwich compounds, (COT^TIPS2)Cp*UR (R = -CH₃, -CH₂Ph, -CH₂TMS, -CH(TMS)₂, -NHPh, -OPh, -SPh, -SePh; COT^TIPS2 = C₈H₆(SiⁱPr₃-1,4)₂; Cp* = C₅Me₅; TMS = SiMe₃), was investigated by the density functional theory method. A two-step mechanism was revealed, in which the insertion of CO₂ into the U-C bond was identified as the rate-determining step via a transition state featured by a four-membered ring with a free-energy barrier of 18.8 kcal/mol to the reaction of the (COT^TIPS2)Cp*UCH₃ system. The whole reaction was strongly exothermic by 45.0 kcal/mol. Substitution effect was discussed, including the bulkiness of the R group and the nature of the ligating atom, and steric hindrance and electrostatic interactions were found to be responsible for the observed variation in reactivity. The reactivity of U(III) and U(IV) complexes in CO₂ functionalization was also compared and discussed. The results were consistent with experimental studies and complemented with molecular level of understanding on the mechanisms of CO₂ functionalization promoted by tetravalent U complexes.

Cellulose nanofiber induced self-assembly of zinc oxide nanoparticles: Theoretical and experimental study on interfacial interaction

In-depth understanding of interfacial behavior between biopolymer and semiconductor metal oxides is crucial to developing potential applications of their composites. A structure-ordered cellulose/zinc oxide composite was synthesized and systematically examined by a relativistic density functional theory. The prepared composite shows a hierarchical structure. ZnO nanoparticles of around 30 nm in size are found to uniformly grow along the cellulose fiber, which together construct the primary-structure unit. Associated with experimental characterizations, calculations unravel that the electrostatic attraction between cellulose and ZnO is the main driving force to form the primary structure and the subsequent electron transfer from cellulose to ZnO enhances their interfacial interaction; moreover, an exothermic process was computed. The interfacial interaction is mainly contributed by Zn-O_c (O_c denotes the cellulose oxygen atom), which is intrinsically of a dative bond; the interaction was calculated between -1.39 and -1.83 eV in strength and dominated by orbital attractions.

A Theoretical Probe for Structures, Metal–Metal Bonding, and Electronic Spectra of Paramagnetic Tetrapyrrolic RuII Complex

Dimeric complexes (RuIIPz)2 have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT), where Pz is a porphyrazine ligand that features a 16-atom, 18-π-electron cyclic polyene aromatic skeleton. Structural optimizations in various configurations and spin states indicate that (RuPz)2 favours a Pz–Pz staggered conformer over an eclipsed one; the paramagnetic triplet state with the staggered configuration is found as the global ground state. This agrees with experimental magnetic results of (RuOEPor)2 (OEPor = octaethylporphyrin) and (RuPc)2 (Pc = phthalocyanine). The Ru–Ru bond length was optimized to be 2.38 Å, close to the experimental bond length of 2.40–2.41 Å. The Ru2 doubly bonded nature has been evidenced by the Ru–Ru stretching vibrational frequency of 202 cm–1, bond energy of 30.7 kcal mol–1, and electronic arrangement of σ2π4(nonbonding-δ)4(π*)2. Further confirmation was obtained from high-level wave function theory calculations (complete active space self-consistent field and n-electron valence state second-order perturbation theory). Associated with the solvation of the explicit pyridine accounting for the first coordination sphere and the implicit continuum model for the long-range interaction, the electronic spectra of tetrapyrrolic ruthenium complex were calculated at the time-dependent DFT level.
