Synthesis, Diastereomer Separation, and Optoelectronic and Structural Properties of Dinuclear Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes with Bridging Diarylhydrazide Ligands

Neutral 2-phenylbenzimidazole-based iridium(III) complexes with picolinate ancillary ligand: tuning the emission properties by manipulating the substituent on the benzimidazole ring

We report the synthesis and characterization of ten neutral bisheteroleptic iridium(III) complexes with 2-phenylbenzimidazole cyclometallating ligand and picolinate as ancillary ligand. The 2-phenylbenzimidazole has been modified by selected substituents introduced on the cyclometallating ring and/or on the benzimidazole moiety. The integrity of the complexes has been assessed by NMR spectroscopy, by high-resolution mass spectrometry and by elemental analysis. The complexes are demonstrated to be highly phosphorescent at room temperature and a luminescence study with comprehensive ab initio calculations allow us to determine the lowest emitting excited state which depends on the substituent nature and its position on the cyclometallating ligand.

Exploring a Mitochondria Targeting, Dinuclear Cyclometalated Iridium (III) Complex for Image-Guided Photodynamic Therapy in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Cells

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has emerged as an efficient and noninvasive treatment approach utilizing laser-triggered photosensitizers for combating cancer. Within this rapidly advancing field, iridium-based photosensitizers with their dual functionality as both imaging probes and PDT agents exhibit a potential for precise and targeted therapeutic interventions. However, most reported classes of Ir(III)-based photosensitizers comprise mononuclear iridium(III), with very few examples of dinuclear systems. Exploring the full potential of iridium-based dinuclear systems for PDT applications remains a challenge. Herein, we report a dinuclear Ir(III) complex (IRDI) along with a structurally similar monomer complex (IRMO) having 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine and 4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligands. The comparative investigation of the mononuclear and dinuclear Ir(III) complexes showed similar absorption profiles, but the dinuclear derivative IRDI exhibited a higher photoluminescence quantum yield (Φp) of 0.70 compared to that of IRMO (Φp = 0.47). Further, IRDI showed a higher singlet oxygen generation quantum yield (Φs) of 0.49 compared to IRMO (Φs = 0.28), signifying the enhanced potential of the dinuclear derivative for image-guided photodynamic therapy. In vitro assessments indicate that IRDI shows efficient cellular uptake and significant photocytotoxicity in the triple-negative breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. In addition, the presence of a dual positive charge on the dinuclear system facilitates the inherent mitochondria-targeting ability without the need for a specific targeting group. Subcellular singlet oxygen generation by IRDI was confirmed using Si-DMA, and light-activated cellular apoptosis via ROS-mediated PDT was verified through various live-dead assays performed in the presence and absence of the singlet oxygen scavenger NaN3. Further, the mechanism of cell death was elucidated by an annexin V-FITC/PI flow cytometric assay and by investigating the cytochrome c release from mitochondria using Western blot analysis. Thus, the dinuclear complex designed to enhance spin-orbit coupling with minimal excitonic coupling represents a promising strategy for efficient image-guided PDT using iridium complexes.

Role of the Trifluoropropynyl Ligand in Blue-Shifting Charge-Transfer States in Emissive Pt Diimine Complexes and an Investigation into the PMMA-Imposed Rigidoluminescence and Rigidochromism

Square-planar Pt^II complexes are of interest as dopants for the emissive layer of organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, the photophysics of three Pt bipyridyl complexes with the strongly e^- withdrawing, high-field, 3,3,3-trifluoropropynyl ligand has been investigated. One complex, (phbpy)PtC₂CF₃ (phbpy = 6-phenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl), has also been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All complexes reported are emissive in both RT CH₂Cl₂ solution (Φ_PL = 0.007 to 0.027) and PMMA film (Φ_PL = 0.25 to 0.42). The trifluoropropynyl ligand elevates the energy of the MLCT and LL'CT states above that of the IL π-π* state, resulting in IL emission in all cases. The emission energies of the trifluoropropynyl compounds are also blue-shifted relative to the analogous pentafluorophenylethynyl compounds, suggesting that the trifluoropropynyl ligand is one of the most electron-withdrawing alkynyl ligands. Rate constants for radiative and nonradiative deactivation were determined from experimentally determined values of Φ_PL and excited-state lifetimes in both solution and PMMA films. The increase in Φ_PL upon incorporation into PMMA film (rigidoluminescence) results from a decrease in the rate constant for non-radiative relaxation. Experimental activation energies for excited-state decay in combination with TDDFT are consistent with the rigidoluminescence resulting from an increase in the energy of the non-emissive triplet metal-centered state. Two of the complexes investigated, (^Ph2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂ and (^t-Bu2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂, where ^t-Bu2bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl and ^Ph2bpy = 4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-dipyridyl, exhibit concentration-dependent excimer emission (orange) along with monomer emission (blue), enabling fine-tuning of the emission color. However, excimer emission was absent in cured PMMA films up to the solubility limit for solution processing of (^Ph2bpy)Pt(C₂CF₃)₂ in CH₂Cl₂, demonstrating the diffusional nature of excimer formation.

Bis-Heteroleptic Cationic Iridium(III) Complexes Featuring Cyclometalating 2-Phenylbenzimidazole Ligands: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

In this report, we investigate a new family of cationic iridium(III) complexes featuring the cyclometalating ligand 2-phenylbenzimidazole and ancillary ligand 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine. Our benchmark complex IrL¹₂ (L¹ = 2-phenylbenzimidazole) displays emission properties similar to those of the archetypical complex 2,2'-dipyridylbis(2',4'-phenylpyridine)iridium(III) in deaerated CH₃CN (Φ = 0.20, λ_em = 584 nm and Φ = 0.14, λ_em = 585 nm, respectively) but exhibits a higher photoluminescence quantum yield in deaerated CH₂Cl₂ (Φ = 0.32, λ_em = 566 nm and Φ = 0.20, λ_em = 595 nm, respectively) and especially a lower nonradiative constant (k_nr = 6.6 × 10⁵ s^-1 vs k_nr = 1.4 × 10⁶ s^-1, respectively). As a primary investigation, we explored the influence of the introduction of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups on the benzimidazole moiety and the synergetic effect of the substitution of the cyclometalating phenyl moiety at the para position with the same substituents. The emission energy displays very good correlation with the Hammett constants of the introduced substituents as well as with ΔE_redox values, which allow us to ascribe the phosphorescence of these series to emanate mainly from a mixed metal/ligand to ligand charge transfer triplet excited state (³M/LLCT*). Two complexes (IrL⁵₂ and IrL⁸₂) display a switch of the lowest triplet excited state from ³M/LLCT* to ligand centered (³LC*), from the less polar CH₂Cl₂ to the more polar CH₃CN. The observed results are supported by (TD)-DFT computations considering the vibrational contributions to the electronic transitions. Chromaticity diagrams based on the maximum emission wavelength of the recorded and simulated phosphorescence spectra demonstrate the strong promise of our complexes as emitting materials, together with the very good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.

Inherently dinuclear iridium(III) meso architectures accessed by cyclometalation of calix[4]arene-based bis(aryltriazoles)

Conventional cyclometalation of calix[4]arene bis(aryltriazoles) with iridium(III) chloride hydrate leads to unique meso architectures in which the Ir₂Cl₂ core is cross-bound by two (C^N)₂ ligands, which allows further replacement of the chloride bridges with ancillary ligands while maintaining the dinuclear structures of the complexes having independent or coupled iridium pairs.

Study of a phosphorescent cationic iridium(III) complex displaying a blue-shift in crystals

We report the synthesis and the characterization of a new cationic iridium(III) complex featuring two 1-(p-methoxyphenyl)-5-methoxybenzimidazole cyclometallating ligands and a dimethylbipyridine ancillary ligand. The complex has been fully characterized by 1D and 2D NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F and ³¹P), elemental analysis and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). The photoluminescence studies performed in a solution, on amorphous powder and on crystals revealed an unexpected behavior. Indeed, the emission spectra observed in both solution (CH₂Cl₂) and amorphous powder samples are centered at around 580 nm, whereas in crystals the emission displays a large hypsochromic shift of ∼800 cm^-1 (λ_em = 558 nm). X-ray diffraction experiments, photophysical studies and DFT calculations allow for rationalizing the hypsochromic shift.

Insertion of Unsaturated C-C Bonds into the O-H Bond of an Iridium(III)-Hydroxo Complex: Formation of Phosphorescent Emitters with an Asymmetrical β-Diketonate Ligand

A synthetic methodology to prepare iridium(III) emitters of the class [3b+3b+3b'] with two ortho-metalated 1-phenylisoquinolines and an asymmetrical β-diketonate has been discovered. The abstraction of the chloride ligands of the dimer [Ir(μ-Cl){κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂]₂ (1, C₆H₅-isoqui = 1-phenylisoquinoline) with AgBF₄ in acetone and the subsequent addition of water to the resulting solution affords the water solvate mononuclear complex [Ir{κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂(H₂O)₂]BF₄ (2), which reacts with KOH to give the dihydroxo-bridged dimer [Ir(μ-OH){κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂]₂ (3). Treatment of the latter with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate leads to Ir{κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂{κ²-O,O-[OC(CO₂CH₃)CHC(OCH₃)O]} (4), as a result of the anti-addition of the O-H bond of a mononuclear [Ir(OH){κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂] fragment to the C-C triple bond of the alkyne and the coordination of one of the carboxylate substituents to the metal center. Complex 3 also reacts with α,β-unsaturated ketones. The reaction with 3-(4-methylphenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one affords Ir{κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂{κ²-O,O-[OC(C₆H₅)CHC(p-C₆H₄Me)O]} (5), whereas methyl vinyl ketone gives a mixture of Ir{κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂{κ²-O,O-[OC(CH₃)CHCHO]} (6) and Ir{κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂{κ²-O,O-[OC(CH₃)CHC(CH═CH₂)O]} (7). Complexes 5 and 6 are the result of the addition of the O-H bond of the mononuclear [Ir(OH){κ²-C,N-(C₆H₄-isoqui)}₂] fragment to the C-C double bond of the α,β-unsaturated ketones and the coordination of the carbonyl group to the iridium center, to generate O,O-chelates which lose molecular hydrogen to aromatize into the asymmetrical β-diketonate ligands. Complexes 4-7 are phosphorescent emitters in the red spectral region (599-672 nm) in doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film at 5 wt % at room temperature and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at room temperature and 77 K. They display short lifetimes (0.8-2.5 μs) and quantum yields in both doped PMMA films and in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at room temperature depending on the substituents of the β-diketonate: about 0.6-0.5 for 4 and 6 and ca. 0.35 for 5 and 7.

Synthesis and crystal structure of (1,10-phenanthroline-κ2 N,N')[2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl-κ2 N 2,C 1]iridium(III) hexa-fluorido-phosphate with an unknown number of solvent mol-ecules

The cationic complex in the title compound, [Ir(C9H7N2)2(C12H8N2)]PF6, comprises two phenyl-pyrazole (ppz) cyclo-metallating ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) ancillary ligand. The asymmetric unit consists of one [Ir(ppz)2(phen)]+ cation and one [PF6]- counter-ion. The central IrIII ion is six-coordinated by two N atoms and two C atoms from the two ppz ligands as well as by two N atoms from the phen ligand within a distorted octa-hedral C2N4 coordination set. In the crystal structure, the [Ir(ppz)2(phen)]+ cations and PF6 - counter-ions are connected with each other through weak inter-molecular C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. Additional C-H⋯π inter-actions between the rings of neighbouring cations consolidate the three-dimensional network. Electron density associated with additional disordered solvent mol-ecules inside cavities of the structure was removed with the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015 ▸). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18]. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the unknown solvent mol-ecule(s). The title compound has a different space-group symmetry (C2/c) from its solvatomorph (P21/c) comprising 1.5CH2Cl2 solvent mol-ecules per ion pair.

Phospho-rescent mono- and diiridium(III) complexes cyclo-metalated by fluorenyl- or phenyl-pyridino ligands with bulky substituents, as prospective OLED dopants

The crystal structures of tris-[9,9-dihexyl-2-(5-meth-oxy-pyridin-2-yl-κN)-9H-fluoren-3-yl-κC 3]iridium pentane monosolvate, [Ir(C31H38NO)3]·C5H12, (I), di-μ2-chlorido-bis-{bis-[2-(5-fluoro-pyridin-2-yl)-9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluoren-3-yl]iridium} pentane 0.3-solvate, [Ir2(C30H35FN)4Cl2]·0.3C5H12, (II), di-μ2-cyanato-bis-{bis-[9,9-dihexyl-2-(5-meth-oxy-pyridin-2-yl)-9H-fluoren-1-yl]iridium} pentane monosolvate, [Ir2(C31H38NO)4(NCO)2(NCO)2]·C5H12, (III), and {μ-N,N'-bis-[3,5-bis-(tri-fluoro-meth-yl)phen-yl]oxamidato}bis(bis{2-[4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)pyridin-2-yl]phenyl-κ2 C 1,N'}iridium)-chloro-benzene-pentane (1/2.3/0.4), [Ir2(C20H19N)4(C18H6F12N2O2)]·2.3C6H5Cl·0.4C5H12, (IV), synthesized in the quest for organic light-emitting devices, were determined. The bis-μ2-chloro and bis-μ2-cyanato complexes have ΔΔ and ΛΛ configurations of the distorted octa-hedral Ir centres in racemic crystals, whereas the oxamido complex has a centrosymmetric (meso) structure with the ΔΛ configuration. The bridging oxamido moiety has a nearly planar anti geometry. All structures show substantial disorder of both host mol-ecules and solvents of crystallization.

Cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes towards blue-emissive dopant for organic light-emitting diodes: fundamentals of photophysics and designing strategies

The fundamental photophysics of cyclometalated Ir(iii) complexes and surveys design strategies for efficient blue phosphorescent Ir(iii) complexes are summarised.

Synthesis and crystal structure of (1,8-naphth-yridine-κ2 N,N')[2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)phenyl-κ2 N 2,C 1]iridium(III) hexa-fluorido-phosphate di-chloro-methane monosolvate

The solvated title salt, [Ir(C9H7N2)2(C8H6N2)]PF6·CH2Cl2, was obtained from the reaction between 1,8-naphthyridine (NAP) and an orthometalated iridium(III) precursor containing a 1-phenyl-pyrazole (ppz) ligand. The asymmetric unit comprises one [Ir(ppz)2(NAP)]+ cation, one PF6 - counter-ion and one CH2Cl2 solvent mol-ecule. The central IrIII atom of the [Ir(ppz)2(NAP)]+ cation is distorted-octa-hedrally coordinated by four N atoms and two C atoms, whereby two N atoms stem from the NAP ligand while the ppz ligands ligate through one N and one C atom each. In the crystal, the [Ir(ppz)2(NAP)]+ cations and PF6 - counter-ions are connected with each other through weak inter-molecular C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. Together with an additional C-H⋯F inter-action involving the solvent mol-ecule, a three-dimensional network structure is formed.

Dinuclear metal complexes: multifunctional properties and applications

Dinuclear metal complexes have enabled breakthroughs in OLEDs, photocatalytic water splitting and CO₂reduction, DSPEC, chemosensors, biosensors, PDT and smart materials.

Single-Molecule MicroRNA Electrochemiluminescence Detection Using Cyclometalated Dinuclear Ir(III) Complex with Synergistic Effect

The realization of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection at the single-molecule level is a longstanding goal of ECL assay that requires a novel ECL probe with significantly enhanced luminescence. Here, the synergistic effect of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is observed unprecedentedly in a new cyclometalated dinuclear Ir(III) complex [Ir₂(dfppy)₄(imiphenH)]PF₆ (1·PF₆, PF₆^- = hexafluorophosphate) in which two {Ir(dfppy)₂}⁺ units are bridged by an imiphenH^- ligand. The ECL intensity from complex 1·PF₆ is 4.4 and 28.7 times as high as that of its reference mononuclear complexes 2 and 3·PF₆, respectively. Theoretical calculation reveals that the S₀ to S₁ excitation is a local excitation in 1·PF₆ with two electron-coupled Ir(III) centers, which contributes to the enhanced ECL. The synergistic effect of ECL in 1·PF₆ can be used to detect microRNA 21 at the single-molecule level (microRNA 21: UAGCUUAUCAGACUGAUGUUGA), with detectable ECL emission from this complex intercalated in DNA/microRNA 21 duplex as low as 90 helix molecules. The finding of the synergistic effect of ECL will not only provide a novel strategy for the modulation of ECL intensity but also enable the detection of microRNA at the single-molecule level.

Early Metal Di(pyridyl) Pyrrolide Complexes with Second Coordination Sphere Arene-π Interactions: Ligand Binding and Ethylene Polymerization

Early metal complexes supported by hemilabile, monoanionic di(pyridyl) pyrrolide ligands substituted with mesityl and anthracenyl groups were synthesized to probe the possibility of second coordination sphere arene-π interactions with ligands with potential for allosteric control in coordination chemistry, substrate activation, and olefin polymerization. Yttrium alkyl, indolide, and amide complexes were prepared and structurally characterized; close contacts between the anthracenyl substituents and Y-bound ligands are observed in the solid state. Titanium, zirconium, and hafnium tris(dimethylamido) complexes were synthesized, and their ethylene polymerization activity was tested. In the solid state structure of one of the Ti tris(dimethylamido) complexes, coordination of Ti to only one of the pyridine donors is observed pointing to the hemilabile character of the di(pyridyl) pyrrolide ligands.

Sky-blue emitting bridged diiridium complexes: beneficial effects of intramolecular π-π stacking

The potential of intramolecular π-π interactions to influence the photophysical properties of diiridium complexes is an unexplored topic, and provides the motivation for the present study. A series of diarylhydrazide-bridged diiridium complexes functionalised with phenylpyridine (ppy)-based cyclometalating ligands is reported. It is shown by NMR studies in solution and single crystal X-ray analysis that intramolecular π-π interactions between the bridging and cyclometalating ligands rigidify the complexes leading to high luminescence quantum efficiencies in solution and in doped films. Fluorine substituents on the phenyl rings of the bridge promote the intramolecular π-π interactions. Notably, these non-covalent interactions are harnessed in the rational design and synthesis of the first examples of highly emissive sky-blue diiridium complexes featuring conjugated bridging ligands, for which they play a vital role in the structural and photophysical properties. Experimental results are supported by computational studies.

Highly luminescent 2-phenylpyridine-free diiridium complexes with bulky 1,2-diarylimidazole cyclometalating ligands

While a number of highly emissive dinuclear Ir(iii) complexes have been reported, they have generally been restricted to structures based on 2-phenylpyridine (Hppy) cyclometalates.
