Study of Monomeric Copper Complexes Supported by N-Heterocyclic and Acyclic Diamino Carbenes

Concatenating Structural Constraint Effects at Tin for the Sequential Generation, Stabilization, and Transfer of Acyclic Aminocarbenes

Structural constraint approaches have been employed toward different ends in recent years, from augmenting the nucleophilicity in pyramidalized low-valent p-block compounds to enhancing the Lewis acidities at planarized tetravalent p-block elements. While previous studies exploited these effects separately, this work introduces a strategy to concatenate structural constraint approaches at individual stages of a reaction sequence in a row to unlock a synthetic path unattainable by conventional methodologies. The boosted nucleophilicity resulting from the constrained tetracoordinated calix[4]pyrrolato stannate(II) dianion enables the reductive formation of sterically unprotected acyclic aminocarbenes. These amino carbenes are stabilized at the concomitantly formed square-planar stannane(IV) as air-stable adducts. Transfer of the carbenes onto copper(I) by cooperativity of the calix[4]pyrrole ligand finalizes this protocol to hitherto unreported yet prototypical carbene complexes. Detailed spectroscopic and quantum theoretical analyses establish the synergy of structural constraints and element-ligand cooperation as the linchpin to this reaction path and its selectivity.

Application of N-heterocyclic carbene-Cu(I) complexes as catalysts in organic synthesis: a review

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are a special type of carbenes in which the carbene carbon atom is part of the nitrogen heterocyclic ring. Due to the simplicity of their synthesis and the modularity of their stereoelectronic properties, NHCs have unquestionably emerged as one of the most fascinating and well-known species in chemical science. The remarkable stability of NHCs can be attributed to both kinetic as well as thermodynamic effects caused by its structural features. NHCs constitute a well-established class of new ligands in organometallic chemistry. Although initially NHCs were regarded as pure σ-donor ligands, later experimental and theoretical studies established the presence of a significant back donation from the d-orbital of the metal to the π* orbital of the NHC. Over the last two decades, NHC-metal complexes have been extensively used as efficient catalysts in different types of organic reactions. Of these, NHC-Cu(I) complexes found prominence for various reasons, such as ease of preparation, possibility of structural diversity, low cost, and versatile applications. This article overviews applications of NHC-Cu(I) complexes as catalysts in organic synthesis over the last 12 years, which include hydrosilylation reactions, conjugate addition, [3 + 2] cycloaddition, A3 reaction, boration and hydroboration, N-H and C(sp2)-H carboxylation, C(sp2)-H alkenylation and allylation, C(sp2)-H arylation, C(sp2)-H amidation, and C(sp2)-H thiolation. Preceding the section of applications, a brief description of the structure of NHCs, nature of NHC-metal bond, and methods of preparation of NHC-Cu complexes is provided.

Redox-Neutral Transformations of Carbon Dioxide Using Coordinatively Unsaturated Late Metal Silyl Amide Complexes

Two-coordinate silylamido complexes of nickel and copper rapidly react with CO₂ to selectively form a new cyanate ligand along with hexamethyldisiloxane byproducts. Mechanistic insight into these reactions was obtained from the synthesis of proposed intermediates, several silyl- and phenyl- substituted amido analogues, and their subsequent reactivity with CO₂. These studies suggest that a unique intramolecular double silyl transfer step facilitates CO₂ deoxygenation, which likely contributes to the rapid rates of reaction. The deoxygenation reactions create a platform for a synthetic cycle in which copper amido complexes convert CO₂ to organic silylcarbamates.

Role of Anionic Backbone in NHC‐Stabilized Coinage Metal Complexes: New Precursors for Atomic Layer Deposition**

Cu and Ag precursors that are volatile, reactive, and thermally stable are currently of high interest for their application in atomic‐layer deposition (ALD) of thin metal films. In pursuit of new precursors for coinage metals, namely Cu and Ag, a series of new N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐based Cu^I and Ag^I complexes were synthesized. Modifications in the substitution pattern of diketonate‐based anionic backbones led to five monomeric Cu complexes and four closely related Ag complexes with the general formula [M(^tBuNHC)(R)] (M=Cu, Ag; ^tBuNHC=1,3‐di‐tert‐butyl‐imidazolin‐2‐ylidene; R=diketonate). Thermal analysis indicated that most of the Cu complexes are thermally stable and volatile compared to the more fragile Ag analogs. One of the promising Cu precursors was evaluated for the ALD of nanoparticulate Cu metal deposits by using hydroquinone as the reducing agent at appreciably low deposition temperatures (145–160 °C). This study highlights the considerable impact of the employed ligand sphere on the structural and thermal properties of metal complexes that are relevant for vapor‐phase processing of thin films.

A carbene stabilized precursor for the spatial atomic layer deposition of copper thin films

This paper demonstrates a carbene stabilized precursor [Cu(^tBuNHC)(hmds)] with suitable volatility, reactivity and thermal stability, that enables the spatial plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (APP-ALD) of copper thin films at atmospheric pressure. The resulting conductive and pure copper layers were thoroughly analysed and a comparison of precursor and process with the previously reported silver analogue [Ag(^tBuNHC)(hmds)] revealed interesting similarities and notable differences in precursor chemistry and growth characteristics. This first report of APP-ALD grown copper layers is an important starting point for high throughput, low-cost manufacturing of copper films for nano- and optoelectronic devices.

Insight into the Decomposition Mechanism of Donor-Acceptor Complexes of EH2 (E = Ge and Sn) and Access to Germanium Thin Films from Solution

Electron-donating N-heterocyclic carbenes (Lewis bases, LB) and electron-accepting Lewis acids (LA) have been used in tandem to yield donor-acceptor complexes of inorganic tetrelenes LB·EH₂·LA (E = Si, Ge, and Sn). Herein, we introduce the new germanium (II) dihydride adducts ImMe₂·GeH₂·BH₃ (ImMe₂ = (HCNMe)₂C:) and ImⁱPr₂Me₂·GeH₂·BH₃ (ImⁱPr₂Me₂ = (MeCNⁱPr)₂C:), with the former complex containing nearly 40 wt % germanium. The thermal release of bulk germanium from ImMe₂·GeH₂·BH₃ (and its deuterated isotopologue ImMe₂·GeD₂·BD₃) was examined in solution, and a combined kinetic and computational investigation was undertaken to probe the mechanism by which Ge is liberated. Moreover, the thermolysis of ImMe₂·GeH₂·BH₃ in solution cleanly affords conformal nanodimensional layers of germanium as thin films of variable thicknesses (20-70 nm) on silicon wafers. We also conducted a computational investigation into potential decomposition pathways for the germanium(II)- and tin(II)-dihydride complexes NHC·EH₂·BH₃ (NHC = [(HCNR)₂C:]; R = 2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃ (Dipp), Me, and H; and E = Ge and Sn). Overall, this study introduces a mild and convenient solution-only protocol for the deposition of thin films of Ge, a widely used semiconductor in materials research and industry.

Mononuclear Cu Complexes Based on Nitrogen Heterocyclic Carbene: A Comprehensive Review

During the last decade, organometallic, coordination, and catalytic chemistry of the three-dimensional metals such as copper (Cu) has been greatly affected by the emergence of nitrogen heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. The NHCs, and in particular the mononuclear Cu^I-based ones, have been proven vastly useful in several applications such as in biosynthesis, catalysis, photochemistry, etc. This review tries to thoroughly describe a series of mononuclear Cu^I NHC complexes and their subcategories such as heteroleptics, and bidentate and tridentate heteroatom complexes, and give some detailed insights on their development, emergence, and applications. A brief outlook is also disclosed to enable other researchers to further develop a platform for future advances and studies in the field of Cu^I-based NHCs.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Copper, Nickel, and Cobalt

The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Stable and Persistent Acyclic Diaminocarbenes with Cycloalkyl Substituents and Their Transformation to β-Lactams by Uncatalysed Carbonylation with CO

Four new acyclic diaminocarbenes (ADACs), viz. [(cyclo-C_n H_2n-1 )₂ N]₂ C (n=5-7) and iPr₂ N-C-N(cyclo-C₆ H₁₁ )₂ , were synthesised by reacting the corresponding formamidinium hexafluorophosphates with NaN(SiMe₃ )₂ . Their nucleophilicities and electrophilicities were respectively judged from the ¹ J_CH values determined for the N₂ CH unit of the corresponding formamidinium cations and from the ⁷⁷ Se NMR chemical shifts of the selenourea derivatives obtained from the reaction of elemental selenium with the corresponding ADACs. An ambiphilic profile essentially identical to that of the "Alder carbene" (iPr₂ N)₂ C was found in each case. Similar to the latter carbene, the new ADACs undergo a well-defined thermal decomposition by β-fragmentation, affording an alkene and a formamidine. The stabilities of [(cyclo-C_n H_2n-1 )₂ N]₂ C depend strongly on the value of n, following the order 6>5>7, with the latter congener being too unstable for isolation. [(cyclo-C₆ H₁₁ )₂ N]₂ C shows no thermal decomposition at room temperature in solution and is thus significantly more stable than (iPr₂ N)₂ C. The stability of iPr₂ N-C-N(cyclo-C₆ H₁₁ )₂ is intermediate between that of (iPr₂ N)₂ C and [(cyclo-C₆ H₁₁ )₂ N]₂ C, its β-fragmentation selectively affording propene and iPrN=CH-N(cyclo-C₆ H₁₁ )₂ . [(cyclo-C_n H_2n-1 )₂ N]₂ C (n=5-7) react readily with CO under mild conditions, selectively affording trisubstituted spirocyclic β-lactam derivatives with an antimicrobial activity spectrum similar to that of penicillin G.

Designing Stability into Thermally Reactive Plumbylenes

Lead analogues of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHPbs) are the least understood members of this increasingly important class of compounds. Here we report the design, preparation, isolation, structure, volatility, and decomposition pathways of a novel aliphatic NHPb: rac- N ², N ³-di- tert-butylbutane-2,3-diamido lead(II) (1Pb). The large steric bulk of the tert-butylamido moieties and rac-butane backbone successfully hinder redox decomposition pathways observed for diamidoethylene and -ethane backbone analogues, pushing the onset of thermal decomposition from below 0 °C to above 150 °C. With an exceptionally high vapor pressure of 1 Torr at 94 ± 2 °C and excellent thermal stability among Pb(II) complexes, 1Pb is a promising precursor for the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) of functional lead-containing materials.
