Abstract
In this paper, we compare the reactivity of a series of triaryl borates B(OArx)3 as catalysts for the hydroboration of alkenes and alkynes. It was observed that commercially available B(OPh)3 performed the poorest, whereas catalysts with o-F atoms appeared to perform much better.

Abstract
A mechanistic study of the catalytic hydroboration of imine using a pincer-type phosphorus compound 1NP was performed through the combination of DFT and DLPNO-CCSD(T) calculations. The reaction proceeds through a phosphorus-ligand cooperative catalytic cycle, where the phosphorus center and triamide ligand work in a synergistic manner. First, the pinB-H bond activation by 1NP occurs through the cooperative functions of the phosphorus center and the triamide ligand, leading to a phosphorus-hydride intermediate 2NP. This is the rate-determining step, with the Gibbs energy barrier and Gibbs reaction energy of 25.3 and -17.0 kcal mol-1, respectively. Subsequently, the hydroboration of phenylmethanimine takes place through a concerted transition state through the cooperative function of the phosphorus center and the triamide ligand. It leads to the final hydroborated product 4 with the regeneration of 1NP. Our computational results reveal that the experimentally isolated intermediate 3NP is a resting state of the reaction. It is formed through the B-N bond activation of 4 by 1NP, rather than via the insertion of the CN double bond of phenylmethanimine into the P-H bond of 2NP. However, this side reaction can be suppressed by utilizing a planar phosphorus compound AcrDipp-1NP as the catalyst, which features steric-demanding substituents on the chelated N atom of the ligand.

Abstract
The choice of backbone linker for two ortho-bis-(9-borafluorene)s has a great influence on the LUMO located at the boron centers and, therefore, the reactivity of the respective compounds. Herein, we report the room temperature rearrangement of 1,2-bis-(9-borafluorenyl)-ortho-carborane, C2B10H10-1,2-[B(C12H8)]2 ([2a]) featuring o-carborane as the inorganic three-dimensional backbone and the synthesis of 1,2-bis-(9-borafluorenyl)benzene, C6H4-1,2-[B(C12H8)]2 (2b), its phenylene analog. DFT calculations on the transition state for the rearrangement support an intramolecular C-H bond activation process via an SEAr-like mechanism in [2a], and predicted that the same rearrangement would take place in 2b, but at elevated temperatures, which indeed proved to be the case. The rearrangement gives access to 3a and 3b as dibora-benzo[a]fluoroanthene isomers, a form of diboron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that had yet to be explored. The isolated compounds 2b, 3a, and 3b were fully characterized by NMR, HRMS, cyclic voltammetry (CV), single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and photophysical measurements, supported by DFT and TD-DFT calculations.

Abstract
The catalytic hydroboration of imines, nitriles, and carbodiimides is a powerful method of preparing amines which are key synthetic intermediates in the synthesis of many value-added products. Imine hydroboration has perennially featured in notable reports while nitrile and carbodiimide hydroboration have gained attention recently. Initial developments in catalytic hydroboration of imines and nitriles employed precious metals and typically required harsh reaction conditions. More recent advances have shifted toward the use of base metal and main group element catalysis and milder reaction conditions. In this survey, we review metal and nonmetal catalyzed hydroboration of these unsaturated organic molecules and group them into three distinct categories: precious metals, base metals, and main group catalysts. The TON and TOF of imine hydroboration catalysts are reported and summarized with a brief overview of recent advances in the field. Mechanistic and kinetic studies of some of these protocols are also presented.

Abstract
Boron Lewis acid-catalyzed and catalyst-free hydroboration reactions of imines are attractive due to the mild reaction conditions. In this work, the mechanistic details of the hydroboration reactions of two different kinds of imines with pinacolborane (HBpin) are investigated by combining density functional theory calculations and some experimental studies. For the hydroboration reaction of N-(α-methylbenzylidene)aniline catalyzed by tris[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borane (BArF 3 ), our calculations show that the reaction proceeds through a boron Lewis acid-promoted hydride transfer mechanism rather than the classical Lewis acid activation mechanism. For the catalyst- and solvent-free hydroboration reaction of imine, N-benzylideneaniline, our calculations and experimental studies indicate that this reaction is difficult to occur under the reaction conditions reported previously. With a combination of computational and experimental studies, we have established that the commercially available BH3 ⋅ SMe2 can serve as an efficient catalyst for the hydroboration reactions of N-benzylideneaniline and similar imines. The hydroboration reactions catalyzed by BH3 ⋅ SMe2 are most likely to proceed through a hydroboration/B-H/B-N σ-bond metathesis pathway, which is very different from that of the reaction catalyzed by BArF 3 .

Abstract
This review highlights the hydroelementation reactions of conjugated and separated diynes, which depending on the process conditions, catalytic system, as well as the type of reagents, leads to the formation of various products: enynes, dienes, allenes, polymers, or cyclic compounds. The presence of two triple bonds in the diyne structure makes these compounds important reagents but selective product formation is often difficult owing to problems associated with maintaining appropriate reaction regio- and stereoselectivity. Herein we review this topic to gain knowledge on the reactivity of diynes and to systematise the range of information relating to their use in hydroelementation reactions. The review is divided according to the addition of the E-H (E = Mg, B, Al, Si, Ge, Sn, N, P, O, S, Se, Te) bond to the triple bond(s) in the diyne, as well as to the type of the reagent used, and the product formed. Not only are the hydroelementation reactions comprehensively discussed, but the synthetic potential of the obtained products is also presented. The majority of published research is included within this review, illustrating the potential as well as limitations of these processes, with the intent to showcase the power of these transformations and the obtained products in synthesis and materials chemistry.

Abstract
In the last two decades, boron-based catalysis has been gaining increasing traction in the field of organic synthesis. The use of halogenated triarylboranes as main group Lewis acid catalysts is an attractive strategy. It has been applied in a growing number of transformations over the years, where they may perform comparably or even better than the gold standard catalysts. This review discusses methods of borane synthesis and cutting-edge boron-based Lewis acid catalysis, focusing especially on tris(pentafluorophenyl)-borane [B(C6F5)3], and other halogenated triarylboranes, highlighting how boron Lewis acids employed as catalysts can unlock a plethora of unprecedented chemical transformations or improve the efficiency of existing reactions.

Abstract
The enlarged landscape of catalysis lies in the heart of chemistry. As the journey has set a milestone in organic synthesis, its darker side has not entered into the limelight. Studies disclose that the reported reactions by using catalysts were also attainable in the absence of catalysts in many cases. This article presents a literature collection that includes the significance of control experiments in hydrofunctionalization reactions. Systematic analysis reveals that the catalysts are ambiguous and might be unessential in chemical reactions enlisted here.

Abstract
Exploiting the steric incompatibility of the tris(alkyl)gallium GaR3 (R = CH2SiMe3) and the bulky N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) 1,3-bis(tert-butyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (ItBu), here we report the B-H bond activation of pinacolborane (HBPin), which has led to the isolation and structural authentication of a novel ion pair, [{ItBu-BPin}+{GaR3(μ-H)GaR3}-] (2). Contrastingly, neither ItBu or GaR3 was able to react with HBPin under the conditions of this study. Combining an NHC-stabilized borenium cation, [{ItBu-BPin}+], with an anionic dinuclear gallate, [{GaR3(μ-H)GaR3}-], 2 proved to be unstable in solution at room temperature, evolving to the abnormal NHC-Ga complex [BPinC{{N(tBu)]2CHCGa(R)3}] (3). Interestingly, the structural isomer of 2, with the borenium cation residing at the C4 position of the carbene, [{aItBu-BPin}+{GaR3(μ-H)GaR3}-] (4), was obtained when the abnormal NHC complex [aItBu·GaR3] (1) was heated to 70 °C with HBPin, demonstrating that, under these forced conditions, it is possible to induce thermal frustration of the Lewis base/Lewis acid components of 1, enabling the activation of HBPin. Building on these stoichiometric studies, the frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) reactivity observed for the GaR3/ItBu combination with HBPin could then be upgraded to catalytic regimes, allowing the efficient hydroboration of a range of aldehydes and ketones under mild reaction conditions. Mechanistic insights into the possible reaction pathway involved in this process have been gained by combining kinetic investigations with a comparative study of the catalytic capabilities of several gallium and borenium species related to 2. Disclosing a new cooperative partnership, reactions are proposed to occur via the formation of a highly reactive monomeric hydride gallate, [{ItBu-BPin}+{GaR3(H)}-] (I). Each anionic and cationic component of I plays a key role for success of the hydroboration, with the nucleophilic monomeric gallate anion favoring the transfer of its hydride to the C═O bond of the organic substate, which in turn is activated by coordination to the borenium cation.

Abstract
Although there exists a variety of different catalysts for hydroboration of organic substrates such as aldehydes, ketones, imines, nitriles etc., recent evidence suggests that tetra-coordinate borohydride species, formed by activation, redistribution, or decomposition of boron reagents, are the true hydride donors. We then proposed that Me2S-BH3 could also act as a hydride donor for the reduction of various imines, as similar compounds have been observed to reduce carbonyl substrates. This boron reagent was shown to be an effective and chemoselective hydroboration reagent for a wide variety of imines.

Abstract
The three-dimensional inorganic analogues of 9,10-diboraanthracene, B2X2(C2B10H10)2 (X = Cl, 1; X = Br, 2), were attained by salt elimination of Li2C2B10H10 and trihaloboranes. The methyl- and phenyl-substituted compounds B2Me2(C2B10H10)2 (3) and B2Ph2(C2B10H10)2 (4) were obtained by treating 1 or 2 with the corresponding Grignard reagents. These compounds were fully characterized by NMR, cyclic voltammetry (CV), IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Experimental (CV and Gutmann-Beckett method) and computational (fluoride ion affinity, hydride ion affinity and LUMO energy) results suggest that the order of Lewis acidity is 2 > 1 > 4 > 3 > SbF5. Treatment of 1 or 2 with HSiEt3 gave a rare neutral borane-silane adduct, (Et3SiH)2B2H2(C2B10H10)2 (5). The equilibrium of 5 in solution was thoroughly investigated by spectroscopy and quantum calculations.

Abstract
Iron-catalysed hydroboration of imines and nitriles has been developed under low catalyst loading (1 mol%) in the presence of HBpin. A wide scope of substrate was found to smoothly undergo hydroboration, including electron releasing/withdrawing and halogen substitution patterns and cyclic substrates which all afforded the corresponding amines in good to excellent yields. Dihydroboration of nitriles was achieved conveniently under solvent free and additive free conditions. Promisingly, this catalytic system is also capable of the hydroboration of challenging ketimine substrates. Preliminary kinetic analysis of imine hydroboration reveals a first-order dependence on catalyst concentration. Both HBpin and 4-fluorophenyl-N-phenylmethanimine (1b) appear to exhibit saturation kinetics with first order dependence up to 0.5 mmol HBpin and 0.75 mmol imine, respectively. Temperature-dependent rate experiments for imine hydroboration have also been explored. Activation parameters for the hydroboration of FPhC[double bond, length as m-dash]NPh (1b) were determined from the Eyring and Arrhenius plots with ΔS ≠, ΔH ≠, and E a values of -28.69 (±0.3) e.u., 12.95 (±0.04) kcal mol-1, and 15.22 (±0.09) kcal mol-1, respectively.

Abstract
Eco-friendly zinc dihydrides stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbenes were demonstrated to be highly efficient catalysts for the double hydroboration of nitriles with pinacolborane, exhibiting turnover frequencies up to 3000 h−1 at room temperature under solvent-free conditions. The reactions afforded corresponding diboronated amines with excellent yields and good functional group tolerance. A single Zn–H insertion product was isolated from a stoichiometric reaction of zinc dihydride with nitrile, and was proved to be an active species in this transformation. Kinetic studies were performed to give some insights into the catalytic reactions. In addition, zinc dihydride species also showed high activity for the hydroboration of imines to boronated amines. Molecular zinc dihydrides were found to be highly efficient catalysts for the hydroboration of nitriles and imines at room temperature under solvent-free conditions.![]()

Abstract
The borylation of ligated dinitrogen by 1,3-B-H bond addition over a W-N[triple bond, length as m-dash]N unit using various hydroboranes has been examined. In a previous study, we have shown that Piers' borane (1) reacted with the tungsten dinitrogen complex 2 to afford a boryldiazenido-hydrido-tungsten species. The ease and mildness of this reaction have encouraged us to extend its scope, with the working hypothesis that 1 could potentially catalyse the 1,3-B-H bond addition of other hydroboranes. Under productive reaction conditions, dicyclohexylborane (HBCy2) and diisopinocampheylborane (HBIpc2) underwent retro-hydroboration to give cyclohexylborane (H2BCy) or isopinocampheylborane (H2BIpc), respectively; these monoalkylboranes act as N2-borylating agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of 1. Under similar conditions, 9-borabicyclononane (9-BBN) slowly adds over the W-N[triple bond, length as m-dash]N unit without rearrangement to a monoalkylborane. Catecholborane (HBcat) undergoes the 1,3-B-H bond addition without the need for a catalyst. We were not able to build more than one covalent B-N bond between the terminal N of the N2 ligand and the boron reagent with this methodology.

The addition of the Grignard 3,4,5-ArFMgBr to aluminum(III)
chloride in ether generates the novel triarylalane Al(3,4,5-ArF)3·OEt2. Attempts to synthesize
this alane via transmetalation from the parent borane with trimethylaluminum
gave a dimeric structure with bridging methyl groups, a product of
partial transmetalation. On the other hand, the novel alane Al(2,3,4-ArF)3 was synthesized from the parent borane and trimethylaluminum.
Interestingly, the solid-state structure of Al(2,3,4-ArF)3 shows an extended chain structure resulting from neighboring
Al···F contacts. Al(3,4,5-ArF)3·OEt2 was then found to be an effective catalyst
for the hydroboration of carbonyls, imines, and alkynes with pinacolborane. The addition of the Grignard 3,4,5-ArFMgBr to

Abstract
Halogenated triarylboranes (BAr3) have been known for decades, however it has only been since the surge of interest in main group catalysis that their application as strong Lewis acid catalysts has been recognised. This review aims to look past the popular tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6F5)3] to the other halogenated triarylboranes, to give a greater breadth of understanding as to how tuning the Lewis acidity of BAr3 by modifications of the aryl rings can lead to improved reactivity. In this review, a discussion on Lewis acidity determination of boranes is given, the synthesis of these boranes is discussed, and examples of how they are being used for catalysis and frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry are explained.

Abstract
Reductive late-stage functionalization of gibberellic acid is reported using three fluoroarylborane Lewis acids; (B(C6F5)3, B(3,5-C6H3(CF3)2), and B(2,4,6-C6H2F3)3) in combination with a tertiary silane and a borane (HBCat) reductant. In each case, C-O bond activation occurs, and different products are obtained depending on the reductant and catalyst employed.

Abstract
The reaction of (diphenylmethylene)hydrazone or 1,4-bis-hydrazone-ylidene(phenylmethyl)benzene with Lewis acidic boranes B(2,4,6-F3C6H2)3 or B(3,4,5-F3C6H2)3 generates the Lewis acid-base adducts. Alternatively, when (9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)hydrazone is employed several products were isolated including 1,2-di(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)hydrazone, the 2 : 1 borane adduct of NH2-NH2 and the 1-(diarylboraneyl)-2-(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)hydrazone in which one ArH group has been eliminated. The benzhydrazide starting material also initially gives an adduct when reacted with Lewis acidic boranes which upon heating eliminates ArH generating a CON2B heterocycle.

Abstract
Redox-active proanions of the type B12(OCH2Ar)12 [Ar = C6F5 (1), 4-CF3C6H4 (2), 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3 (3)] are introduced in the context of an experimental and computational study of the visible-light-initiated polymerization of a family of styrenes. Neutral, air-stable proanions 1-3 were found to initiate styrene polymerization through single-electron oxidation under blue-light irradiation, resulting in polymers with number-average molecular weights (Mn) ranging from ∼6 to 100 kDa. Shorter polymer products were observed in the majority of experiments, except in the case of monomers containing 4-X (X = F, Cl, Br) substituents on the styrene monomer when polymerized in the presence of 1 in CH2Cl2. Only under these specific conditions are longer polymers (>100 kDa) observed, strongly supporting the formulation that reaction conditions significantly modulate the degree of ion pairing between the dodecaborate anion and cationic chain end. This also suggests that 1-3 behave as weakly coordinating anions (WCA) upon one-electron reduction because no incorporation of the cluster-based photoinitiators is observed in the polymeric products analyzed. Overall, this work is a conceptual realization of a single reagent that can serve as a strong photooxidant, subsequently forming a WCA.

Abstract
We report here that addition of stoichiometric amounts of alcohols or water to mixtures of imines and pinacolborane promote reduction reactions. The reactions of several imines were examined, revealing that alkyl imines were reduced, while aniline derived imines were not effectively reduced. The use of binol as an additive resulted in modest enantioinduction, however other chiral additives that were screened gave negligible enantioinduction. While the reactions described herein are not competitive in conversion with established imine reduction technologies, this work reveals that the presence of protic impurities must be considered as a promoter of side reactions in catalyzed imine hydroborations. Amines also promote imine reduction in certain cases, raising the possibility of a slow autocatalytic reaction. The ability of water or other protic impurities to promote the reduction of imines with pinacolborane represents an important identification of a potential source of background reaction in catalyzed reductions of imines.

Abstract
This work showcases the 1,3-haloboration reaction of alkynes in which boron and chlorine add to propargyl systems in a proposed sequential oxazoliumborate formation with subsequent ring-opening and chloride migration. In addition, the functionalization of these propargyl esters with dimethyl groups in the propargylic position leads to stark differences in reactivity whereby a formal 1,1-carboboration prevails to give the 2,2-dichloro-3,4-dihydrodioxaborinine products as an intramolecular chelate. Density functional theory calculations are used to rationalize the distinct carboboration and haloboration pathways. Significantly, this method represents a metal-free route to highly functionalized compounds in a single step to give structurally complex products.

Abstract
The electrophilic phosphonium cation (EPC) salt [(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)3PF][B(C6F5)4] (2) can display catalytic activity greater than its thermodynamic acidity would suggest. The role of steric factors is explored.
