Light- and Thermal-Activated Olefin Metathesis of Hindered Substrates

Plasmonic visible-near infrared photothermal activation of olefin metathesis enabling photoresponsive materials

Light-induced catalysis and thermoplasmonics are promising fields creating many opportunities for innovative research. Recent advances in light-induced olefin metathesis have led to new applications in polymer and material science, but further improvements to reaction scope and efficiency are desired. Herein, we present the activation of latent ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalysts via the photothermal response of plasmonic gold nanobipyramids. Simple synthetic control over gold nanobipyramid size results in tunable localized surface plasmon resonance bands enabling catalyst initiation with low-energy visible and infrared light. This approach was applied to the ROMP of dicyclopentadiene, affording plasmonic polymer composites with exceptional photoresponsive and mechanical properties. Moreover, this method of catalyst activation was proven to be remarkably more efficient than activation through conventional heating in all the metathesis processes tested. This study paves the way for providing a wide range of photoinduced olefin metathesis processes in particular and photoinduced latent organic reactions in general by direct photothermal activation of thermally latent catalysts.

Fast Initiating Furan-Containing Hoveyda-Type Complexes: Synthesis and Applications in Metathesis Reactions

Two new ruthenium complexes with chelating-ether benzylidene ligands bearing a furan moiety were synthesized and characterized, including X-ray crystallography. They initiated fast, also at 0 °C, and were found to be highly active in a variety of ring-closing, ene-yne, and cross-metathesis reactions, including an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) model, which makes them good candidates for the transformation of complex polyfunctional compounds that require mild reaction conditions.

Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalysts Bearing a Macrocyclic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand: Improved Stability and Activity

Formation of sterically hindered C-C double bonds via catalytic olefin metathesis is considered a very challenging task for Ru catalysts. This limitation led to the development of specialised catalysts bearing sterically reduced N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that are very active in such transformations, yet significantly less stable as compared to general purpose catalysts. To decrease the small-size NHC catalysts susceptibility to decomposition, a new NHC ligand was designed, in which two sterically reduced aryl arms were tied together by a C-8 alkyl chain. The installation of this macrocyclic ligand on the ruthenium centre led to the formation of an olefin metathesis catalyst (trans-Ru6). Interestingly, this complex undergoes transformation into an isomer bearing two Cl ligands in the cis-arrangement (cis-Ru6). These two isomeric complexes exhibit similarly high thermodynamic stability, yet different application profiles in catalysis.

Steric and electronic effects in latent S-chelated olefin metathesis catalysts

Advanced sol-gel process for efficient heterogeneous ring-closing metathesis

Olefin metathesis, a powerful synthetic method with numerous practical applications, can be improved by developing heterogeneous catalysts that can be recycled. In this study, a single-stage process for the entrapment of ruthenium-based catalysts was developed by the sol-gel process. System effectiveness was quantified by measuring the conversion of the ring-closing metathesis reaction of the substrate diethyl diallylmalonate and the leakage of the catalysts from the matrix. The results indicate that the nature of the precursor affects pore size and catalyst activity. Moreover, matrices prepared with tetraethoxysilane at an alkaline pH exhibit a better reaction rate than in the homogenous system under certain reaction conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to present a one-step process that is simpler and faster than the methods reported in the literature for catalyst entrapment by the sol-gel process under standard conditions.

Fluorine-containing ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalysts

The review summarizes literature data on the methods for the introduction of fluorine atoms and fluoralkyl groups into different ligands to construct metathesis-active ruthenium carbene complexes. It also analyzes the influence of fluorinated ligands on the catalytic activity of the complexes. The choice, structure and positions of fluorinated substituents in NHC ligands are generally dictated by the desire to increase the electrophilicity of the ruthenium atom due to the electron-withdrawing effect of fluorine atoms and fluoroalkyl groups, resulting, as a rule, in an increase in the activity of the ruthenium complex. In catalysts with unsymmetrical fluorine-containing NHC ligands, there is a possibility of additional Ru–F coordination, making the complexes much more stable and, consequently, more active. The presence of fluorine in chelating alkylidene ligands provides an increase in the catalyst initiation rate due to a weakening of the ruthenium – heteroatom bond. Besides, the introduction of polyfluoroalkyl groups into ligands solves the problem of catalyst recovery using fluorous biphasic systems for reuse.

Reactivity and Selectivity in Ruthenium Sulfur-Chelated Diiodo Catalysts

A trifluoromethyl sulfur-chelated ruthenium benzylidene, Ru-S-CF₃ -I, was synthesized and characterized. This latent precatalyst provides a distinct activity and selectivity profiles for olefin metathesis reactions depending on the substrate. For example, 1,3-divinyl-hexahydropentalene derivatives were efficiently obtained by ring-opening metathesis (ROM) of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). Ru-S-CF₃ -I also presented a much more effective photoisomerization process from the inactive cis-diiodo to the active trans-diiodo configuration after exposure to 510 nm (green light), allowing for a wide scope of photoinduced olefin metathesis reactions. DFT calculations suggest a faster formation and enhanced stability of the active trans-diiodo species of Ru-S-CF₃ -I compared with Ru-S-Ph-I, explaining its higher reactivity. In addition, the photochemical release of chloride anions by irradiation of Cl-BODIPY in the presence of DCPD derivatives with diiodo Ru benzylidenes, led to in situ generation of chloride complexes, which quickly produced the corresponding cross-linked polymers. Thus, novel selective pathways that use visible light to guide olefin metathesis based synthetic sequences is presented.

Light-Activated Olefin Metathesis: Catalyst Development, Synthesis, and Applications

The most important means for tuning and improving a catalyst's properties is the delicate exchange of the ligand shell around the central metal atom. Perhaps for no other organometallic-catalyzed reaction is this statement more valid than for ruthenium-based olefin metathesis. Indeed, even the simple exchange of an oxygen atom for a sulfur atom in a chelated ruthenium benzylidene about a decade ago resulted in the development of extremely stable, photoactive catalysts. This Account presents our perspective on the development of dormant olefin metathesis catalysts that can be activated by external stimuli and, more specifically, the use of light as an attractive inducing agent.The insight gained from a deeper understanding of the properties of cis-dichlororuthenium benzylidenes opened the doorway for the systematic development of new and efficient light-activated olefin metathesis catalysts and catalytic chromatic-orthogonal synthetic schemes. Following this, ways to disrupt the ligand-to-metal bond to accelerate the isomerization process that produced the active precatalyst were actively pursued. Thus, we summarize herein the original thermal activation experiments and how they brought about the discoveries of photoactivation in the sulfur-chelated benzylidene family of catalysts. The specific wavelengths of light that were used to dissociate the sulfur-ruthenium bond allowed us to develop noncommutative catalytic chromatic-orthogonal processes and to combine other photochemical reactions with photoinduced olefin metathesis, including using external light-absorbing molecules as "sunscreens" to achieve novel selectivities. Alteration of the ligand sphere, including modifications of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand and the introduction of cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) ligands, produced more efficient light-induced activity and special chemical selectivity. The use of electron-rich sulfoxides and, more prominently, phosphites as the agents that induce latency widened the spectrum of light-induced olefin metathesis reactions even further by expanding the colors of light that may now be used to activate the catalysts, which can be used in applications such as stereolithography and 3D printing of tough metathesis-derived polymers.

Sterically Tuned N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands for the Efficient Formation of Hindered Products in Ru-Catalyzed Olefin Metathesis

Formation of tetrasubstituted C-C double bonds via olefin metathesis is considered very challenging for classical Ru-based complexes. In the hope to improve this condition, three ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts bearing sterically reduced N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with xylyl "arms" were synthesized, characterized using both computational and experimental techniques, and tested in a number of challenging reactions. The catalysts are predicted to initiate much faster than the analogue with mesityl N-substituents. We also foreboded the rotation of xylyl side groups at ambient temperature and the existence of all four atropoisomers in the solution, which was in agreement with experimental data. These catalysts exhibited high activity at relatively low temperatures (45-60 °C) and at reduced catalyst loadings in various reactions of sterically hindered alkenes, including complex polyfunctional substrates of pharmaceutical interest, such as yangonin precursors, chrysantemic acid derivatives, analogues of cannabinoid agonists, α-terpineol, and finally a thermally unstable peroxide.

Sulfur-Chelated Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

This Account summarizes the historical development of latent sulfur-chelated ruthenium precatalysts from the Lemcoff group’s perspective. The most unique feature of this family of complexes is that they appear in the more stable cis-dichloro configuration, which is latent towards olefin metathesis reactions. Activation of the precatalyst, brought about by isomerization from the cis-dihalo to the trans-dihalo forms, can be achieved either by thermal or light stimuli. Modifications of the ligand sphere bestows unique properties upon the catalysts, which have been used in diverse applications, from 3D printing of metathesis polymers to orthogonally divergent synthetic pathways.

The Influence of Various N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands on Activity of Nitro-Activated Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

A set of nitro-activated ruthenium-based Hoveyda-Grubbs type olefin metathesis catalysts bearing sterically modified N-hetero-cyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been obtained, characterised and studied in a set of model metathesis reactions. It was found that catalysts bearing standard SIMes and SIPr ligands (4a and 4b) gave the best results in metathesis of substrates with more accessible C-C double bonds. At the same time, catalysts bearing engineered naphthyl-substituted NHC ligands (4d-e) exhibited high activity towards formation of tetrasubstituted C-C double bonds, the reaction which was traditionally Achilles' heel of the nitro-activated Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst.

Unprecedented Selectivity of Ruthenium Iodide Benzylidenes in Olefin Metathesis Reactions

The development of selective olefin metathesis catalysts is crucial to achieving new synthetic pathways. Herein, we show that cis-diiodo/sulfur-chelated ruthenium benzylidenes do not react with strained cycloalkenes and internal olefins, but can effectively catalyze metathesis reactions of terminal dienes. Surprisingly, internal olefins may partake in olefin metathesis reactions once the ruthenium methylidene intermediate has been generated. This unexpected behavior allows the facile formation of strained cis-cyclooctene by the RCM reaction of 1,9-undecadiene. Moreover, cis-1,4-polybutadiene may be transformed into small cyclic molecules, including its smallest precursor, 1,5-cyclooctadiene, by the use of this novel sequence. Norbornenes, including the reactive dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), remain unscathed even in the presence of terminal olefin substrates as they are too bulky to approach the diiodo ruthenium methylidene. The experimental results are accompanied by thorough DFT calculations.

Electronic effects in mixed N-heterocyclic carbene/phosphite indenylidene ruthenium metathesis catalysts

Five new complexes [RuCl₂(SIMes)(Ind)(O-pXC₅H₄)] bearing different para-substituted triphenylphosphites (X = H, OCH₃, CF₃, Cl, SF₅ and CN) were synthesised and used to study the effect of the electronic properties of the phosphite on olefin metathesis activity. Investigations of the physical properties of the new ligands and complexes were performed using physicochemical and DFT calculations. The catalytic activity of the complexes was benchmarked in challenging ring closing metathesis transformations featuring the formation of tetra-substituted double bonds. Complex [RuCl₂(SIMes)(Ind)P(O-pCF₃C₅H₄)₃] (3c) exhibited a particularly high catalytic activity, superior to state-of-the-art catalysts, and was further tested on a wide range of substrates.
