Abstract
A method to assemble (hetero)aryl sulfonamides via the reductive coupling of aryl sulfinates and nitroarenes is reported. Various reducing conditions with sodium bisulfite and with or without tin(II) chloride in DMSO were developed using an ultrasound bath to improve reaction homogeneity and mixing. A range of (hetero)aryl sulfonamides bearing a selection of functional groups were prepared, and the mechanism of the transformation was investigated. These investigations have led us to propose the formation of nitrosoarene intermediates, which were established via an independent molecular coupling strategy.

Abstract
β-Amino sulfones are commonly found structural motifs in biologically active compounds. Herein, we report a direct photocatalyzed amino-sulfonylation reaction of alkenes for the efficicient production of important compounds by simple hydrolysis without the need for additional oxidants and reductants. In this transformation, the sulfonamides worked as bifunctional reagents, simultaneously generating sulfonyl radicals and N-centered radicals which were added to alkene in a highly atom-economical fashion with high regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. This approach showed high functional group tolerance and compatibility, facilitating the late-stage modification of some bioactive alkenes and sulfonamide molecules, thereby expanding the biologically relevant chemical space. Scaling up this reaction led to an efficient green synthesis of apremilast, one of the best-selling pharmceuticals, demonstrating the synthetic utility of the applied method. Moreover, mechanistic investigations suggest that an energy transfer (EnT) process was in operation.

Abstract
A novel multicomponent sulfonylation of alkenes is described for the assembly of various β-substituted arylsulfones using cheap and easily available K2S2O5 as a sulfur dioxide source. Of note, the procedure does not need any extra oxidants and metal catalysts and exhibits a relatively wide substrate scope and good functional group compatibility. Mechanistically, an initial arylsulfonyl radical is formed involving the insertion of sulfur dioxide with aryl diazonium salt, followed by alkoxyarylsulfonylation or hydroxysulfonylation of alkenes.

Abstract
An organocatalytic enantioselective radical reaction of potassium alkyltrifluoroborates, DABCO·(SO2)2 and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds under photoinduced conditions is developed, which provides an efficient pathway for the synthesis of chiral β-sulfonyl carbonyl compounds in good yields with excellent enantioselectivity (up to 96% ee). Aside from α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with auxiliary groups, common chalcone substrates are also well compatible with this organocatalytic system. This method proceeds through an organocatalytic enantioselective radical sulfonylation under photoinduced conditions, and represents a rare example of asymmetric transformation involving sulfur dioxide insertion.

Abstract
Functionalized aryl sulfonamides are important building blocks in the pharmaceutical industry. A one-step synthesis catalyzed by a copper salt was developed using stable solid commodity chemicals in sulfolane or, alternatively, in green solvents such as γ-valerolactone, iPrOAc, or nBuOAc with acetic acid. The method tolerated diverse functional groups commonly presented in current medicines and drug intermediates. The mechanistic study showed a radical coupling pathway between the sulfonyl and anilinium radicals through the use of K2S2O8 and copper catalyst, respectively.

Abstract
An efficient arylsulfonylation/cyclization of 2-aryl-N-methacryloyl indoles with potassium metabisulfite and aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates was developed. A series of variously substituted arylsulfonyl indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones were formed in moderate to good yields via utilization of the nature abundant inorganic salt potassium metabisulfite as a SO2 surrogate. Additionally, this three-component protocol can also be employed for the synthesis of arylsulfonyl-substituted benzimidazo-[2,1-a]isoquinolin-6(5H)-ones.

Abstract
The use of nitroarenes as amino sources in synthesis is challenging. Herein is reported an unusual, straightforward, and transition metal-free method for the net [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction of 2-azaallyl anions with nitroarenes. The products of this reaction are diverse 2,5-dihydro-1,2,4-oxadiazoles (>40 examples, up to 95% yield). This method does not require an external reductant to reduce nitroarenes, nor does it employ nitrosoarenes, which are often used in N-O cycloadditions. Instead, it is proposed that the 2-azaallyl anions, which behave as super electron donors (SEDs), deliver an electron to the nitroarene to generate a nitroarene radical anion. A downstream 2-azaallyl radical coupling with a newly formed nitrosoarene is followed by ring closure to afford the observed products. This proposed reaction pathway is supported by computational studies and experimental evidence. Overall, this method uses readily available materials, is green, and exhibits a broad scope.

Abstract
The generation of heteroaryl-substituted sulfonyl compounds via a catalyst-, base-, and additive-free three-component reaction of heteroaryl-substituted tertiary alcohols, aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates, and DABCO·(SO2)2 under mild conditions is developed. Various functional groups are tolerated well in this transformation, and a broad substrate scope is demonstrated. A preliminary mechanistic investigation shows that this reaction undergoes a radical process, including the insertion of sulfur dioxide, sulfonyl radical addition to unactivated alkene, and remote heteroaryl ipso-migration.

Abstract
AbstractThe upsurge of interest in the development of methodologies for the construction of sulfur-containing compounds via the use of expedient reagents has established sustainable tools in organic chemistry. This review focuses on sulfonylation reactions using inorganic sulfites (Na2S2O5 or K2S2O5) as the sulfur dioxide surrogates. Compared to the bis-adduct with DABCO, which is an excellent surrogate of gaseous SO2, the use of sodium or potassium metabisulfites as SO2 surrogates are equally efficient. The objective of the current review is to exemplify recent sulfonylation reactions using inorganic sulfites. For better understanding, the review is categorized according to the mode of reactions: transition-metal-catalyzed SO2 insertion, metal-free SO2 insertion, and visible-light-mediated SO2 insertion. All the reactions in each of the sections are illustrated with selected examples with a pertinent explanation of the proposed mechanism.1 Introduction2 Outlines of the Reactions Involving SO2 Insertion2.1 Transition-Metal-Catalyzed SO2 Insertion2.2 Transition-Metal-Free SO2 Insertion2.3 Visible-Light-Mediated SO2 Insertion3 Conclusion and Outlook

Abstract
A highly chemoselective C-N bond cleavage reaction of p-methoxybenzyl- (PMB), 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl- (DMB), or cinnamyl-substituted tertiary sulfonamides in the presence of catalytic Bi(OTf)3 is presented. A wide range of sulfonamide substrates smoothly furnished the corresponding C-N bond cleavage products in good to excellent yields. Great efforts have been made to obtain insights into the reaction mechanism based on a series of control experiments and mass spectroscopy.

Abstract
Sulfuric chloride is used as the source of the –SO2– group in a palladium-catalyzed three-component synthesis of sulfonamides. Suzuki–Miyaura coupling between the in situ generated sulfamoyl chlorides and boronic acids gives rise to diverse sulfonamides in moderate to high yields with excellent reaction selectivity. Although this transformation is not workable for primary amines or anilines, the results show high functional group tolerance. With the solving of the desulfonylation problem and utilization of cheap and easily accessible sulfuric chloride as the source of sulfur dioxide, redox-neutral three-component synthesis of sulfonamides is first achieved. Sulfuric chloride is used as the source of the –SO2– group in a palladium-catalyzed three-component synthesis of sulfonamides.![]()

Abstract
A broad-spectrum, catalytic method has been developed for the synthesis of sulfonamides and sulfamates. With the activation by the combination of a catalytic amount of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) and silicon additives, amidations of sulfonyl fluorides and fluorosulfates proceeded smoothly and excellent yields were generally obtained (87-99 %). Noticeably, this protocol is particularly efficient for sterically hindered substrates. Catalyst loading is generally low and only 0.02 mol % of catalyst is required for the multidecagram-scale synthesis of an amantadine derivative. In addition, the potential of this method in medicinal chemistry has been demonstrated by the synthesis of the marketed drug Fedratinib via a key intermediate sulfonyl fluoride 13. Since a large number of amines are commercially available, this route provides a facile entry to access Fedratinib analogues for biological screening.

Abstract
As a privileged motif, tetrazoles can be widely found in pharmaceuticals and materials science. Herein, a five-component reaction of cycloketone oxime esters, alkynes, DABCO·(SO2)2, and two molecules of trimethylsilyl azide under iron catalysis is developed, giving rise to a range of cyano-containing sulfonylated tetrazoles in moderate to good yields. This multicomponent reaction exhibits excellent selectivity and enables the formation of multiple new chemical bonds in one pot. A possible mechanism involving azidosulfonylation of alkynes, C-C bond cleavage of both cycloketone oxime esters and alkynes, and [3 + 2] cycloaddition of trimethylsilyl azide and the nitrilium cation intermediate is proposed. Additionally, the potential of terminal alkynes acting as powerful synthons for the synthesis of tetrazoles in a radical initiated process is demonstrated for the first time. High-value tetrazole motifs were synthesized via a five-component reaction Fixing sulfur dioxide into tetrazole molecules under mild conditions Low-cost iron catalyst initiated the transformation Excellent selectivity with the formation of multiple new chemical bonds

Abstract
The importance of γ-keto sulfones in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis is known. An efficient route to γ-keto sulfones via a metal-free reaction of cyclopropanols, sulfur dioxide and electron-deficient olefins is achieved. This reaction proceeds smoothly under mild conditions without the need of catalyst, oxidant or additive. A plausible mechanism is proposed, which occurs through a γ-keto sulfinate intermediate generated in situ from the reaction of cyclopropanol with sulfur dioxide. The γ-keto sulfinate intermediate would be trapped by the electron-deficient olefin, resulting in the formation of γ-keto sulfones. Various functional groups in the cyclopropanols and electron-deficient olefins are compatible in this transformation.

Abstract
Recently, sulfonylation reactions using potassium/sodium metabisulfite as the sulfur dioxide surrogate have been developed rapidly. In most cases, the transformations go through radical processes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide under mild conditions. Additionally, transition metal catalysis is applied in the reactions for the synthesis of sulfonyl-containing compounds. Among the approaches, photoinduced conversions under visible light or ultraviolet irradiation are also involved. In this updated report, the insertion of sulfur dioxide from potassium metabisulfite or sodium metabisulfite is summarized.

Abstract
The use of sulfinic acids and their salts continues to be extensively developed in organic chemistry. This is attributable to their dual capacity for acting as nucleophilic or electrophilic reagents, as well as their ease of preparation and stability on storage. This report highlights the research accomplished since 2015 on this topic, updating a previous review published by our team in 2014.
