Abstract
An efficient method for the construction of 5-arylpyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines using calcium carbide as a solid alkyne source instead of flammable and explosive gaseous acetylene, pyrazole-3-amine and (hetero)aromatic aldehydes as starting materials in the presence of a copper mediator is described. Meanwhile, 2-arylpyrimido[1,2-b]indazoles are also synthesized under similar conditions using indazole-3-amine as a substitute for pyrazole-3-amine as a starting material. The method has salient features such as the use of an inexpensive and easy-to-handle alkyne source, commercially available substrates, wide functional group tolerance, a low-cost mediator, and simple workup procedures. This protocol can also be extended to gram-scale synthesis.

Abstract
A method for the synthesis of benzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-a]isoquinolines through Sonogashira cross-coupling/nucleophilic addition tandem reactions using calcium carbide as a solid alkyne source, 2-(2-bromophenyl)benzimidazoles as starting materials, and copper as a catalyst is described. The target products can also be synthesized through one-pot three-component reactions of o-phenylenediamines, o-bromobenzaldehydes, and calcium carbide. Both reaction routes can also be scaled up to gram scale.

Abstract
A novel synthesis method for the construction of 3-coumaranones from the reaction of two molecules, calcium carbide and salicylaldehyde, was reported. Various 2-methyl-2-vinylbenzofuran-3(2H)-ones could be obtained in moderate yields in the absence of a metal catalyst. The salient features of this protocol involve widely available starting materials, an inexpensive and easy-to-handle alkyne source, and a cost-efficient route. The reaction mechanism was verified by density functional theory calculations of possible intermediates and corresponding transition states.

Abstract
Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a novel two-dimensional (2D) germanium carbide, tetrahex-GeC2, and determine its electronic and optical properties. Each Ge atom binds to four C atoms, in contrast to the known 2D hexagonal germanium carbides. Monolayer tetrahex-GeC2 possesses a narrow direct band gap of 0.89 eV, which can be effectively tuned by applying strain and increasing the thickness. Its electron mobility is extraordinarily high (9.5 × 104 cm2/(V s)), about 80 times that of monolayer black phosphorus. The optical absorption coefficient is ∼106 cm-1 in a wide spectral range from near-infrared to near-ultraviolet, comparable to perovskite solar cell materials. We obtain high cohesive energy (5.50 eV/atom), excellent stability, and small electron/hole effective mass (0.19/0.10 m0). Tetrahex-GeC2 turns out to be a very promising semiconductor for nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract
The unique reactivity of the acetylenic unit in DMSO gives rise to ubiquitous synthetic methods. We theoretically consider CaC2 solubility and protolysis in DMSO and formulate a strategy for CaC2 activation in solution-phase chemical transformations. For this, we use a new strategy for the modeling of ionic compounds in strongly coordinating solvents combining Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics with the DFTB3-D3(BJ) Hamiltonian and static DFT computations at the PBE0-D3(BJ)/pob-TZVP-gCP level. We modeled the thermodynamics of CaC2 protolysis under ambient conditions, taking into account its known heterogeneity and considering three polymorphs of CaC2. We give a theoretical basis for the existence of the elusive intermediate HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ca-OH and show that CaC2 insolubility in DMSO is of thermodynamic nature. We confirm the unique role of water and specific properties of DMSO in CaC2 activation and explain how the activation is realized. The proposed strategy for the utilization of CaC2 in sustainable organic synthesis is outlined.

Abstract
The solvent-free mechanochemical reaction has aroused increasing interest among scientists. Mechanical ball-milling can implement reactions under mild conditions, shorten the reaction time, and improve the reaction efficiency. Particularly, the most attractive characteristic of mechanochemistry is that it can alter the reaction pathway. However, few such examples have been reported so far. In this paper, we report the reaction of aldoximes with NaCl and Oxone under ball-milling conditions to afford N-acyloxyimidoyl chlorides, which are different from those of the liquid-phase counterpart.

Abstract
The synthesis of new sp-hybridized carbon allotropes is a meaningful and challenging issue. Among the alkynyl carbon family, polyaromatic alkynes is a new branch to be developed. Herein, naphyne with a frame construction of alkynyl-linked naphthyl skeleton was efficiently fabricated through targeted mechanochemical reaction of calcium carbide and perchloronaphthalene. Its unique property and structure with wide alkynyl-naphthyl conjugation, multilayered nanofilm morphology, and high structural stability were corroborated by the comprehensive characterizations combined with computational simulations. Because of these structural features, the as-prepared naphyne can be applied as high-performance binder-free supercapacitor electrode with high specific capacitance (154 F g-1), robust long-term retention (92.1% after 5000 cycles), and prominent electrical conductivity (1490 S m-1). The successful architecture of naphyne approves the feasible synthesis of polyaromatic alkynes and further may provide a prospective approach for the development of alkynyl carbon materials.

Abstract
A vinylation/devinylation looping system for acetaldehyde manufacturing was evaluated. Vinylation of iso-butanol with calcium carbide under solvent-free conditions was combined with hydrolysis of the resulting iso-butyl vinyl ether under slightly acidic conditions. Acetaldehyde produced by hydrolysis was collected from the reaction mixture by simple distillation, and the remaining alcohol was redirected to the vinylation step. All the inorganic co-reagents can be looped as well, and the full sequence is totally sustainable. A complete acetaldehyde manufacturing cycle was proposed on the basis of the developed procedure. The cycle was fed with calcium carbide and produced the aldehyde as a single product in a total preparative yield of 97 %. No solvents, hydrocarbons, or metal catalysts were needed to maintain the cycle. As calcium carbide in principle can be synthesized from virtually any source of carbon, the developed technology represents an excellent example of biomass and waste conversion into a valuable industrial product.

Abstract
A mechanochemical synthesis of one-dimensional carbon allotrope carbyne model compounds, namely tetraaryl[n]cumulenes (n=3, 5) was realized. Central for the mechanosynthesis of the cumulenic carbon nanostructures were the development of a mechanochemical Favorskii alkynylation-type reaction and the implementation of a solvent-free, acid-free reductive elimination with tin(II) chloride by ball milling.

Abstract
A new methodology for the construction of methyl-substituted benzofuran rings from the reactions of calcium carbide with salicylaldehyde p-tosylhydrazones/2-hydroxyacetophenone p-tosylhydrazones is described. Various 2-methylbenzofurans and 2,3-dimethylbenzofurans could be obtained in satisfactory yield by using a cuprous chloride catalyst. The advantages of this protocol include the use of a readily available and easy-to-handle acetylene source and simple workup procedure.

Abstract
Efficient production of diacetone alcohol (DAA), mesityl oxide (MO) and isophorone (IP) is important for the high value utilization of acetone. For this, a novel process is proposed for the aldol condensation of acetone by refluxing on CaC2, whereby 95% of total selectivity of (DAA, MO and IP) and 85% of acetone conversion are achieved simultaneously under mild conditions (56 °C, 100 kPa). This result is superior to the previously reported ones, which may be ascribed to the extremely high catalytic capacity of CaC2 for the aldol condensation and instant separation of the target products from the catalyst to suppress the unwanted successive condensations. Moreover, the target products may be adjusted by operation conditions. Lower temperature and higher reflux rate favour the production of DAA and MO; MO and IP are favoured otherwise. The present process integrates several functions into one unit, i.e. the basic catalysis of calcium carbide, aldol condensation of acetone, instant distillation separation of the condensates, and the hydrolysis of CaC2 to C2H2, which makes it feasible to coproduce C2H2 and high value derivatives of acetone simultaneously. The refluxing reaction of acetone on CaC2 realizes an efficient coproduction of diacetone alcohol, mesityl oxide, isophorone and C2H2.![]()

Abstract
Calcium carbide has been increasingly used as a sustainable, easy-to-handle, and low-cost feedstock in organic synthesis. Currently, methodologies of using calcium carbide as "solid acetylene" in synthesis are strictly limited to activation and reaction with X-H (X=C, N, O, S) bonds. Herein, a mild and transition-metal-free protocol was developed for the vinylation of epoxides and aryl ether linkage (β-O-4 lignin model compound) with calcium carbide through C-O bond cleavage, forming valuable vinyl ether products. Calcium carbide plays a vital role in the C-O bond activation and cleavage, and in providing acetylide source for the formation of vinylated products. These exciting results may provide new methodologies for organic synthesis and new insights toward lignin- or biomassrelated degradation to useful products.

Abstract
The discovery of new carbon materials and the reactive activation of CaC2 are challenging subjects. In this study, a series of alkynyl carbon materials (ACMs) were synthesized by the interfacial mechanochemical reaction of CaC2 with four typical polyhalogenated hydrocarbons. Their properties and structures were characterized, and their electrochemical performances were examined. The reaction was rapid and efficient arising from the intense mechanical activation of CaC2. The ACMs are micro-mesoporous materials with distinct layered structure, specific graphitization degree, and clear existence of sp-C. In addition, the ACMs exhibit high specific capacitance in the range of 57-133 F g-1 and thus can be ideal candidates for active materials used in supercapacitors. The results may imply an alternative synthesis of carbon allotropes, as well as an efficient approach for the activation of CaC2.

Abstract
The carbon-sulfur bond formation reaction is of paramount importance for functionalized materials design, as well as for biochemical applications. The use of expensive metal-based catalysts and the consequent contamination with trace metal impurities are challenging drawbacks of the existing methodologies. Here, we describe the first environmentally friendly metal-free photoredox pathway to the thiol-yne click reaction. Using Eosin Y as a cheap and readily available catalyst, C-S coupling products were obtained in high yields (up to 91%) and excellent selectivity (up to 60 : 1). A 3D-printed photoreactor was developed to create arrays of parallel reactions with temperature stabilization to improve the performance of the catalytic system.
