Abstract
Oxidation of 2-furylaninlies with m-CPBA followed by treatment with a base provides access to functionalized indolin-3-ones. The designed oxidative transformation utilizes an underassessed chemical behavior of furyl-containing amines to form a C-N bond via engaging a β-carbon atom of the furan core upon a ring-forming step, thereby providing an alternative disconnection toward nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of colibactin warhead model compounds using two newly developed metal-free photocatalytic cyclopropanation reactions. These mild cyclopropanations expand the known applications of eosin within synthesis. A halogen atom transfer reaction mode has been harnessed so that dihalides can be used as the cyclopropanating agents. The colibactin warhead models were then used to provide new insight into two key mechanisms in colibactin chemistry. An explanation is provided for why the colibactin warhead sometimes undergoes a ring expansion-addition reaction to give fused cyclobutyl products while at other times nucleophiles add directly to the cyclopropyl unit (as when DNA adds to colibactin). Finally, we provide some evidence that Cu(II) chelated to colibactin may catalyze an important oxidation of the colibactin-DNA adduct. The Cu(I) generated as a result could then also play a role in inducing double strand breaks in DNA.

Abstract
Herein, we report the copper-catalyzed dehydrogenative C(sp2)-N bond formation of 4-pentenamides via nitrogen-centered radicals. This reaction provides a straightforward and efficient preparation method for γ-alkylidene-γ-lactams. Notably, we could controllably synthesize α,β-unsaturated- or α,β-saturated-γ-alkylidene-γ-lactams depending on the reaction conditions.

Abstract
High-value 1-azaspirocyclic scaffolds have been made from simple and readily accessible furan precursors in a single operation. The protocol is a one-pot sequence using highly sustainable conditions (oxygen, visible light, and a favored green solvent) that leads to a dramatic increase in molecular complexity. The initial substrates can include functionalities that are suitable for further elaboration; in this way, the pruned polycyclic skeletons of the stemonamine, cylindricine, and lepadiformine natural products were rapidly accessed.

Abstract
Organic dyes, which absorb light in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum, offer a lower cost, greener alternative to precious metals in photocatalysis. In this context, the organic dye eosin's uses are currently expanding at a significant rate. For a long time, its action as an energy transfer agent dominated, more recently, however, there has been a growing interest in its potential as an electron transfer agent. In this short review, we highlight some recent (from 2016 onwards) contributions to the field with a focus on the breadth of the reactions eosin can catalyse.

Abstract
We report the shortest synthesis of glycosidase inhibitor (+)-hyacinthacine A1 using a highly chemoselective N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed cross-benzoin reaction as well as a furan photooxygenation-amine cyclization strategy. This is the first such cyclization on a furylic alcohol, an unprecedented reaction due to the notorious instability of the formed intermediates. The photooxygenation strategy was eventually incorporated into a three-step one-pot process that formed the requisite pyrrolizidine framework of (+)-hyacinthacine A1.

Abstract
The development of photocascades that rapidly transform simple and readily accessible furan substrates into polycyclic alkaloid frameworks or erythrina natural products is described. Each of the sequences developed makes use of photocatalyzed energy transfer processes, which generate singlet oxygen, to set up the substrates for the second photocatalyzed reaction, wherein electron transfer generates carbon-centered radicals for the cyclizations that give the final complex frameworks. A chemical switch has been developed that can "switch off" one photocatalyst; thus, allowing a second photocatalyst to take over control of the sequence. As a corollary, this strategy represents the first time it has been possible to use multiple photocatalysts in photocascades, and, as such, it expands significantly the reactions that can be included in such cascades and the order in which they can be initiated.

Abstract
Total synthesis and absolute configuration confirmation of γ-elemene-type sesquiterpenes, which possess vast potential for biological activities, was investigated based on a convergent synthetic strategy. A key intermediate with all functional groups of this family of natural products was accessed by an intermolecular aldol reaction and then an acetylation of a known ketone (12) derived from commercially available verbenone. The versatile intermediate can be easily transformed into structurally different γ-elemene-type sesquiterpenes based on control of base-promoted cyclization manipulation in different solvents. The utility of this robust approach is illustrated by the first syntheses of elema-1,3,7(11),8-tetraen-8,12-lactam (4') and 8β-methoxy-isogermafurenolide (6a), as well as the syntheses of elem-1,3,7,8-tetraen-8,12-olide (3) and hydroxyisogermafurenolide (5) in only 6 or 7 steps. In addition, the structure of the reported 5βH-elem-1,3,7,8-tetraen-8,12-olide (1) was revised as elem-1,3,7,8-tetraen-8,12-olide (3) by comparison of their identified datum, and the absolute configuration of elema-1,3,7(11),8-tetraen-8,12-lactam was confirmed as 4'. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of all synthesized natural compounds and their natural analogues on cancer cell proliferation was evaluated. Among them compounds 3, 4 and 4' were found to possess potent inhibitory activity against Kasumi-1 and Pfeiffer. Meanwhile, preliminary structure-activity relationships for these compounds are discussed.

Abstract
The photooxygenation of 2-propargylfurans enabled access to original nitrogen-containing cyclopentenones and related compounds in a one-pot fashion. By employing readily-available substrates such as furans and amines, we succeeded in achieving a high degree of molecular complexity. Relying on the introduction of an alkyne moiety and tailored substrates, this transformation reveals a new facet for reaction sequences featuring the photooxygenation of furans.

Abstract
The use of a modified prototype continuous flow reactor (CFR) as a pivotal part of a number of versatile singlet oxygen-mediated reaction sequences is presented herein. These sequences target rapid access to structural complexity and diversity. The prototype reactor achieves high conversions and productivities by attaining large specific surface areas for these biphasic reactions. In the reactor, the reaction solution is nebulized (using either oxygen or air) and the resulting aerosol is irradiated by an LED jacket that surrounds the Pyrex reaction chamber. The one pot procedures developed herein are, according to many different criteria, both highly efficient and green. The key common intermediates and the source of both the complexity and variety of the final products are N-acyl imminium ions (NAI; protonated N-acyl enamines). The initial substrates are simple and readily accessible furans and the diverse array of products is composed of different complex γ-lactams. Many of the products are of particular interest due to their close relationships to known biologically active molecules.

Abstract
Silver and gold have become incredibly versatile and mild catalysts for numerous transformations, especially in heterocycle synthesis. For the most prominent of them, i.e. furans, silver and gold, with their unique reactivity and mildness, allow numerous possible routes to highly substituted and/or functionalized furans from a large variety of starting materials. Silver and gold catalysis provide thus the most flexible way to this important family of compounds. The present review describes these silver and gold-catalyzed routes, with some emphasis on mechanistic aspects, and proposes a comparison of both the silver and the gold-catalyzed syntheses of furans.

Abstract
Oxidative rearrangement of 2-(2-aminobenzyl)furans affording 2-(2-acylvinyl)indoles in a stereocontrolled manner in good-to-excellent yields has been developed. Thus, (2-aminobenzyl)furans with electron-releasing alkoxy substituents in the phenyl group form only E-isomers of 2-(2-acylvinyl)indoles. Conversely, substrates without such substituents produce target products as Z-isomers exclusively. A short diastereoselective method for the transformation of the obtained 2-(2-acylvinyl)indoles into antimalarial bisindole alkaloid flinderole A-C analogues has been developed.
