Abstract
An earth-abundant Co(II) salt-catalyzed mild and affordable synthetic route has been developed for the synthesis of industrially relevant 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds (or γ-diketones) via oxidative coupling between aryl alkenes and ketones (both cyclic and acyclic) using TBHP and DBU as the oxidant and base, respectively. 1,4-Dicarbonyl compounds are known to be synthesized using expensive metal catalysts, dual catalysts, or low-cost metal complexes combined with an additive or ligand template, which further needs to be synthesized. Herein, we report the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds using cobalt(II) acetate as a catalyst without any expensive co-catalyst or ligand templates. This methodology has a broad substrate scope with significant yields and good functional group tolerance. Generation of unsymmetrical 1,4-dicarbonyls at room temperature and its versatile synthetic expansion to produce synthetically and biologically valuable heterocyclic compounds are salient features of this novel methodology. In addition, various controlled experiments such as primary kinetic isotope effect study, Hammett analysis with variation of the nature of the substituents on the styrene ring, and theoretical calculations (density functional theory) unravel the mechanistic intricacies involved in this new, simple, and atom-economic methodology.

Abstract

This Review examines parts per million (ppm) palladium
concentrations
in catalytic cross-coupling reactions and their relationship with
mole percentage (mol %). Most studies in catalytic cross-coupling
chemistry have historically focused on the concentration ratio between
(pre)catalyst and the limiting reagent (substrate), expressed as mol
%. Several recent papers have outlined the use of “ppm level”
palladium as an alternative means of describing catalytic cross-coupling
reaction systems. This led us to delve deeper into the literature
to assess whether “ppm level” palladium is a practically
useful descriptor of catalyst quantities in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling
reactions. Indeed, we conjectured that many reactions could, unknowingly,
have employed low “ppm levels” of palladium (pre)catalyst,
and generally, what would the spread of ppm palladium look like across
a selection of studies reported across the vast array of the cross-coupling
chemistry literature. In a few selected examples, we have examined
other metal catalyst systems for comparison with palladium.

Abstract
A versatile and efficient method to prepare borylated arenes furnished with alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, and heteroaryl functional groups is developed by merging Ir-catalyzed C-H borylations (CHB) with a chemoselective palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of triorganoindium reagents (Sarandeses-Sestelo coupling) with aryl halides bearing a boronic ester substituent. Using triorganoindium cross-coupling reactions to introduce unsaturated moieties enables the synthesis of borylated arenes that would be difficult to access through the direct application of the CHB methodology. The sequential double catalyzed procedure can be also performed in one vessel.

Abstract
We report a mild palladium-catalyzed method for the selective allylation of 4-alkylpyridines in which highly basic pyridylic anions behave as soft nucleophiles. This method exploits alkylidene dihydropyridines, which are semi-stable intermediates readily formed using a ‘soft-enolization’ approach, in a new mechanistic manifold for decarboxylative allylation. Notably, the catalytic generation of pyridylic anions results in a substantially broader functional group tolerance compared to other pyridine allylation methods. Experimental and theoretical mechanistic studies strongly suggest that pyridylic anions are indeed the active nucleophiles in these reactions, and that they participate in an outer-sphere reductive elimination step. This finding establishes a new pKa boundary of 35 for soft nucleophiles in transition metal-catalyzed allylations. We report a mild palladium-catalyzed method for the selective allylation of 4-alkylpyridines in which highly basic pyridylic anions behave as soft nucleophiles.![]()

Abstract
A new photocatalyzed route to amides from alcohols and amines mediated by visible light is presented. The reaction is carried out in ethyl acetate as a solvent. Ethyl acetate can be defined a green and bio-based solvent. The starting materials such as the energy source are easily available, stable, and inexpensive. The reaction has shown to be general and high yielding.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed three-component synthesis of acyclic imides from feedstock aryl halides, carboxylic acids and isocyanides through the intermediacy of isoimides has been developed. The key to the success of this approach was controlled isocyanide slow addition and organic/aqueous biphasic conditions. This transition-metal-catalyzed approach features readily available starting materials, atom- and step-economy, good functional group compatibility and gram-scale synthetic capability. Utilization of this new method is illustrated in the late-stage functionalization of drugs Carprofen, Loxoprofen and Flurbiprofen. This strategy has also been successfully applied in the synthesis of cyclic imides including phthalimide, homophthalimide, and 2H-2-benzazepine-1,3-dione derivatives.

Abstract
We report a general and rapid chemoselective Kumada-Tamao-Corriu (KTC) cross-coupling of aryl bromides in the presence of chlorides or triflates with functionalized Grignard reagents at 0 °C in 15 min by using Pd-PEPPSI-IPentCl (C4). Nucleophiles and electrophiles (or both) can contain Grignard-sensitive functional groups (-CN, -COOR, etc.). Control experiments together with DFT calculations suggest that transmetallation is rate limiting for the selective cross-coupling of Br in the presence of Cl/OTf with functionalized Grignard reagents. One-pot sequential KTC/KTC cross-couplings with bromo-chloro arenes have been demonstrated for the first time. We also report the one-pot sequential KTC/Negishi cross-couplings using C4 showcasing the versatility of this methodology.

Abstract
The alkylmagnesium alkoxide sBuMgOR⋅LiOR (R=2-ethylhexyl), which was prepared as a 1.5 m solution in toluene, undergoes very fast Br/Mg exchange with aryl and heteroaryl bromides, producing aryl and heteroaryl magnesium alkoxides (ArMgOR⋅LiOR) in toluene. These Grignard reagents react with a broad range of electrophiles, including aldehydes, ketones, allyl bromides, acyl chlorides, epoxides, and aziridines, in good yields. Remarkably, the related reagent sBu2 Mg⋅2 LiOR (R=2-ethylhexyl) undergoes Cl/Mg exchange with various electron-rich aryl chlorides in toluene, producing diorganomagnesium species of type Ar2 Mg⋅2 LiOR, which react well with aldehydes and allyl bromides.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is among the most important C-C bond-forming reactions available due to its reliability, chemoselectivity, and diversity. Aryl halides and pseudohalides such as iodides, bromides, and triflates are traditionally used as the electrophilic coupling partner. The expansion of the reaction scope to nontraditional electrophiles is an ongoing challenge to enable an even greater number of useful products to be made from simple starting materials. Herein, we present how an NHC-based Pd catalyst can enable Suzuki-Miyaura coupling where the C(acyl)-O bond of aryl esters takes on the role of electrophile, allowing the synthesis of various ketone-containing products. This contrasts known reactions of similar esters that provide biaryls via nickel catalysis. The underlying cause of this mechanistic divergence is investigated by DFT calculations, and the robustness of esters compared to more electrophilic acylative coupling partners is analyzed.
