Abstract
Tuning the electronic structure of protecting groups on the nitrogen atom of substrates has emerged as an effective strategy to achieve the tandem trifluoromethylation/C(sp2)-H annulation using Langlois' reagent as the CF3 source for the electrochemical synthesis of functionalized tetrahydroquinolines and dihydroquinolinones.

Abstract
A novel protocol of gold-catalyzed N-aryl propargylamines to construct tetrahydroquinolines and 5,6-dihydro-4H-pyrrolo[3,2,1-ij]quinolines in moderate to good yields has been developed through the tandem reactions of intramolecular hydroarylation and transfer hydrogenation. The strategy has the advantages of easy access to raw materials, simple reaction conditions, good substrate compatibility, high efficiency, and excellent regioselectivity.

Abstract
Owing to the inherent ability of amides to chelate transition-metal catalysts, amide-directed C–H activation reactions constitute a major tactic in directed C–H activation reactions. While the conventional procedures for these reactions usually involve prior preparation and purification of amide substrates before the C–H activation, the step economy is actually undermined by the operation of installing the directing group (DG) and related substrate purification. In this context, directed C–H activation via in situ amidation of the crude material provides a new protocol that can significantly enhance the step economy of amide-directed C–H activation. In this short review, the advances in C–H bond activation reactions mediated or initiated by in situ amidation are summarized and analyzed.1 Introduction2 In Situ Amidation in Aryl C–H Bond Activation3 In Situ Amidation in Alkyl C–H Bond Activation4 Annulation Reactions via Amidation-Mediated C–H Activation5 Remote C–H Activation Mediated by Amidation6 Conclusion

Abstract
A sequential [4 + 2]/[2 + 1] annulation of α-aryl vinylsulfoniums with 2-aminochalcones and 2-(2-aminobenzylidene)-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione is reported that affords a series of cyclopropane-fused tetrahydroquinolines. The salient features of this novel and practical transformation include high efficiency, transition-metal-free nature, operational simplicity, and outstanding functional group tolerance.

Abstract
We report the first highly enantio- and diastereoselective three-component Povarov reaction between anilines and aldehydes catalyzed by a chiral amine catalyst. A wide variety of substituted tetrahydroquinolines were obtained with moderate to good yields and excellent enantioselectivity and diastereoselectivity (up to 99% ee and >95:5 dr) under the reaction conditions. Furthermore, the reaction intermediates could be efficiently converted to other valuable building blocks.

Abstract
Ru(II)-catalyzed chelation-assisted highly regioselective C8-hydroxylation of 1,2,3,4-tretrahydroquinolines has been developed. Various 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines underwent smooth C8-H hydroxylation with cheap and safe K2S2O8 as the oxidant and oxygen source to furnish the corresponding products in good to excellent yields with high tolerance of the functional groups. The choice of a readily installable and removable N-pyrimidyl directing group is the key to catalysis. Mechanistic studies suggest the involvement of a six-membered ruthenacycle intermediate in the catalytic cycle. The method can also be extended to the direct hydroxylation of other (hetero)arene C-H bonds.

Abstract
The present review is devoted to summarizing the recent advances (2015-2017) in the field of metal-catalysed group-directed C-H functionalisation. In order to clearly showcase the molecular diversity that can now be accessed by means of directed C-H functionalisation, the whole is organized following the directing groups installed on a substrate. Its aim is to be a comprehensive reference work, where a specific directing group can be easily found, together with the transformations which have been carried out with it. Hence, the primary format of this review is schemes accompanied with a concise explanatory text, in which the directing groups are ordered in sections according to their chemical structure. The schemes feature typical substrates used, the products obtained as well as the required reaction conditions. Importantly, each example is commented on with respect to the most important positive features and drawbacks, on aspects such as selectivity, substrate scope, reaction conditions, directing group removal, and greenness. The targeted readership are both experts in the field of C-H functionalisation chemistry (to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the last years) and, even more so, all organic chemists who want to introduce the C-H functionalisation way of thinking for a design of straightforward, efficient and step-economic synthetic routes towards molecules of interest to them. Accordingly, this review should be of particular interest also for scientists from industrial R&D sector. Hence, the overall goal of this review is to promote the application of C-H functionalisation reactions outside the research groups dedicated to method development and establishing it as a valuable reaction archetype in contemporary R&D, comparable to the role cross-coupling reactions play to date.

Abstract
Cp*RhIII /IrIII complexes are known to play important roles in both C-H activation and transfer hydrogenation (TH). However, these two areas evolved separately. They have been integrated in redox- and chemodivergent coupling reactions of N-pyridylanilines with enones. The iridium-catalyzed coupling with enones leads to the efficient synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines through TH from i PrOH. Counterintuitively, i PrOH does not serve as the sole hydride source, and the major reaction pathway involves disproportionation of a dihydroquinoline intermediate, followed by the convergent and iterative reduction of quinolinium species.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization has numerous applications in organic synthesis as a powerful type of bond transformation. In particular, the combination of C-H functionalization with other types of chemical transformations in the manner of multicomponent reactions is an even more beneficial tool in the synthesis of small organic molecules because such reactions provide a platform for the rapid generation of high molecular diversity and complexity by making use of the advantages of both latent C-H bond transformation and the multicomponent reaction. Herein, we provide a review highlighting the research advances in the multicomponent reactions built upon transition metal-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization. The content spans from the reactions featuring the functionalization of C(sp3)-H, C(sp2)-H and C(sp)-H bonds over the last decade.
