Abstract
ConspectusAromatic esters are cost-effective, versatile, and commonly used scaffolds that are readily synthesized or encountered as synthetic intermediates. While most conventional reactions involving these esters are nucleophilic acyl substitutions or 1,2-nucleophilic additions─where a nucleophile attacks the carbonyl group, decarbonylative transformations offer an alternative pathway by using the carbonyl group as a leaving group. This transition-metal-catalyzed process typically begins with oxidative addition of the C(acyl)-O bond to the metal. Subsequently, the reaction involves the migration of CO to the metal center, the reaction with a nucleophile, and reductive elimination to yield the final product. Pioneering work by Yamamoto on nickel complexes and the development of decarbonylative reactions (such as Mizoroki-Heck-type olefination) using aromatic carboxylic anhydrides catalyzed by palladium were conducted by de Vries and Stephan. Furthermore, reports have surfaced of decarbonylative hydrogenation of pyridyl methyl esters by Murai using ruthenium catalysts as well as Mizoroki-Heck-type reactions of nitro phenyl esters by Gooßen under palladium catalysis. Our group has been at the forefront of developing decarbonylative C-H arylations of phenyl esters with 1,3-azoles and aryl boronic acids using nickel catalysts. The key to this reaction is the use of phenyl esters, which are easy to synthesize, stabilize, and handle, allowing oxidative addition of the C(acyl)-O bond; nickel, which facilitates oxidative addition of the C(acyl)-O bond; and suitable bidentate phosphine ligands that can stabilize the intermediate. By modification of the nucleophiles, esters have been effectively utilized as electrophiles in cross-coupling reactions, encouraging the development of these nucleophiles among researchers. This Account summarizes our advancements in nucleophile development for decarbonylative coupling reactions, particularly highlighting the utilization of aromatic esters in diverse reactions such as alkenylation, intramolecular etherification, α-arylation of ketones, C-H arylation, methylation, and intramolecular C-H arylation for dibenzofuran synthesis, along with cyanation and reductive coupling. We also delve into reaction types that are distinct from typical decarbonylative reactions, including ester dance reactions, aromatic ring exchanges, and deoxygenative transformations, by focusing on the oxidative addition of the C(acyl)-O bond of the aromatic esters to the metal complex. For example, the ester dance reaction is hypothesized to undergo 1,2-translocation starting with oxidative addition to a palladium complex, leading to a sequence of ortho-deprotonation/decarbonylation, followed by protonation, carbonylation, and reductive elimination. The aromatic exchange reaction likely involves oxidative addition of complexes of different aryl electrophiles with a nickel complex. In deoxygenative coupling, an oxidative addition complex with palladium engages with a nucleophile, forming an acyl intermediate that undergoes reductive elimination in the presence of an appropriate reducing agent. These methodologies are poised to captivate the interest of synthetic chemists by offering unconventional and emerging approaches for transforming aromatic esters. Moreover, we demonstrated the potential to transform readily available basic chemicals into new compounds through organic synthesis.

Abstract
Unimolecular fragment coupling (UFC) is defined as a reaction format, wherein atom(s) located in the middle of a molecule are extruded, and the remaining fragments are coupled. UFC is a potentially powerful strategy that is an alternative to transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling because the target chemical bond is formed in an intramolecular fashion, which is inherently beneficial for chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity issues. In this Perspective, we will present an overview of the recent advances in UFC reactions, which encompass those proceeding through the elimination of CO2, CO, SO2, isocyanates, N2, or single atoms primarily via transition metal catalysis.

Abstract
Decarbonylative borylation of aryl anhydrides by rhodium catalysis has been reported. A base-free system with Rh(PPh3)3Cl as a catalyst enables the efficient synthesis of various arylboronate esters from readily available aryl anhydrides. The reaction involves the cleavage of C(O)-O bonds and the formation of C-B bonds. The experimental results demonstrated that compared with carboxylic acids, amides, and esters, anhydrides have higher reactivity in the decarbonylative borylation reaction under the current conditions. Furthermore, compared with the reported palladium-catalyzed borylation reaction of aryl anhydrides, the present rhodium-catalyzed method has the advantages of a shorter reaction time and a lower reaction temperature.

Abstract
o-Hydroxyarylphosphanes are fascinating compounds by their multiple-reactivity features, attributed to the ambident hard and soft Lewis- and also Brønstedt acid-base properties, wide tuning opportunities via backbone substituents with ±mesomeric and inductive, at P and in o-position to P and O also steric effects, and in addition, the configurational stability at three-valent phosphorus. Air sensitivity may be overcome by reversible protection with BH3 , but the easy oxidation to P(V)-compounds may also be used. Since the first reports on the title compounds ca. 50 years ago the multiple reactivity has led to versatile applications. This includes various P-E-O and P=C-O heterocycles, a multitude of O-substituted derivatives including acyl derivatives for traceless Staudinger couplings of biomolecules with labels or functional substituents, phosphane-phosphite ligands, which like the o-phosphanylphenols itself form a range of transition metal complexes and catalysts. Also main group metal complexes and (bi)arylphosphonium-organocatalysts are derived. Within this review the various strategies for the access of the starting materials are illuminated, including few hints to selected applications.

Abstract
Chiral P,N-ligands are of great interest and importance in the fields of metal-catalyzed enantioselective transformations and have found numerous applications spanning drug and polymer synthesis. Here, modular assembly of diverse P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands is achieved through palladium-catalyzed asymmetric cleavage of C-P bond/intermolecular C-H bond functionalization in high atroposelectivities and diastereoselectivities of up to >99% ee and >25:1 dr. This protocol features broad substrate scope and provides an avenue for facile construction of new P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands directly from the phosphonium salts and benzoxazoles/benzothiazoles. Evaluation of the synthesized P-stereogenic and axially chiral phosphinooxazoles ligands in two model catalytic asymmetric reactions illustrates the potential of our strategy to access valuable chiral molecules.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed unimolecular fragment coupling (UFC) is defined as processes that forge new chemical bonds through the extrusion of molecules, such as CO and CO2, and the subsequent recombination of the remaining fragments. Herein, we report on a new UFC reaction that involves the palladium-catalyzed elimination of an isocyanate fragment from an amide, with the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. An organometallic intermediate that is relevant to the catalytic reaction was characterized by X-ray crystallography. This UFC reaction enables the late-stage transformation of an amide functionality, allowing amides to be used as a convertible directing or protecting group.

Abstract
A "group-substitution" synthesis of trivalent phosphines via a C-P activation of phosphonium salts is reported. The alkyl groups were introduced by alkylation of phosphines to form phosphonium salts. The "de-arylation" of phosphonium salts was achieved by C-P activation and transfer hydrogenation with homogeneous or heterogeneous Pd (0) catalysts. With this method, a series of trivalent phosphines were prepared from commercially available triarylphosphines. A chiral monophosphine ligand could be prepared from BINAP in a "de-phosphination" process.

Abstract
Planar chiral [2.2]paracyclophanes are resolved through the direct C–H arylation of enantiopure oxazolines, providing a convenient route to ligands and chiral materials. Preliminary results show that hydrolysis followed by decarboxylative phosphorylation leads to enantiopure [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives that are otherwise challenging to prepare. Racemic bromo[2.2]paracyclophanes are directly transformed into enantiomerically pure planar chiral oxazolines in one step with simultaneous resolution of planar chirality.![]()

Abstract
A novel non-C2-symmetric bis-benzimidazolium salt derived from (±)-valinol has been prepared by a simple and straightforward process in good yield. The structure of bis-benzimidazolium salt provided a bulky steric group on the ethylene bridge; which facilitates the catalytic efficacy in the C(sp2)-C(sp2) formation. Its catalytic activity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of unactivated aryl chlorides has been found to have high efficacy in 1 mol% Pd loading. This protocol demonstrated the potential on the synthesis of sterically hindered biaryls.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed C-P bond formation reaction of ArBr/ArOTf using acylphosphines as differential phosphination reagents is reported. The acylphosphines show practicable reactivity with ArBr and ArOTf as the phosphination reagents, though they are inert to the air and moisture. The reaction affords trivalent phosphines directly in good yields with a broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance. This reaction discloses the acylphosphines' capability as new phosphorus sources for the direct synthesis of trivalent phosphines.

Abstract
Acylphosphines are an attractive subclass of phosphine ligands with specific reactivity and ligating properties. This study describes the synthesis of a ferrocene-based acylphosphine, FcC(O)PPh2 (1, Fc = ferrocenyl), the corresponding phosphine chalcogenides FcC(O)P(E)Ph2 (E = O, S and Se), and palladium(ii) complexes resulting from the orthometallation of 1, viz. [Pd(μ-X)(1- H)]2 (2-X, where X = Cl, Br and I), which in turn serve as a convenient entry point to a range of monopalladium complexes. Thus, the cleavage of 2-X with phosphines, 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine and in situ-generated 1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene (L) provided complexes [PdX(L)(1- H)] (3-5), which are typically obtained as single isomers by crystallisation but undergo spontaneous isomerisation in solution leading to equilibrium mixtures of cis and trans isomers. Upon treatment with sodium acetylacetonate (Na(acac)), 2-Cl was transformed into [Pd(acac)(1- H)] (6), which reacted with (diphenylphosphino)acetic acid under proton transfer to give [Pd(Ph2PCH2CO2-κ2O,P)(1- H)] (7), while the reaction with allylating agents produced the π-allyl complex [Pd(η3-C3H5)(1- H)] (9). Compound [PdCl(PMe3)(1- H)] was further used to prepare a series of diorganopalladium complexes [Pd(R)(PMe3)(1- H)] (8; R = Me, 4-C6H4Me, 4-C6H4CF3, CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC6H4Me-4 and C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC6H4Me-4). All compounds were structurally characterised using spectroscopic methods and, in most cases, also by X-ray diffraction analysis. The structural data indicated the rigidity of the Pd(1- H)+ fragment and revealed variations in the Pd-donor distances dictated by an interplay between the trans influence and steric demands of the ligands surrounding Pd(ii). Moreover, some compounds were studied by DFT to rationalise their isomerisation equilibria and electrochemical properties, which were examined by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
We report here cobalt-N-heterocyclic carbene catalytic systems for the intramolecular decarbonylative coupling through the chelation-assisted C-C bond cleavage of acylindoles and diarylketones. The reaction tolerates a wide range of functional groups such as alkyl, aryl, and heteroaryl groups, giving the decarbonylative products in moderate to excellent yields. This transformation involves the cleavage of two C-C bonds and formation of a new C-C bond without the use of noble metals, thus reinforcing the potential application of decarbonylation as an effective tool for C-C bond formation.

Abstract
Nickel-catalyzed decarbonylation of acylsilanes is developed. In sharp contrast to cross-coupling reactions of acylsilanes, in which the silyl group serves as a leaving group, the silyl group is retained in the product in this decarbonylation reaction. Although the strong binding of the dissociated CO to the nickel center frequently hinders catalyst turnover in nickel-mediated decarbonylative reactions, this reaction can be catalyzed by nickel complexes bearing a CO ligand.

Abstract
Carboxylic acid derivatives containing acyl halides, anhydrides, esters, amides and acyl nitriles are highly appealing electrophiles in transition-metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions due to their ready availability and low cost, which can provide divergent transformations of carboxylic acids into other value-added products. In this Minireview, we focus on the recent advances of decarbonylative transformations of carboxylic acid derivatives in carbon-carbon bond formations using Ni or Pd catalysts. A series of reaction types, product classifications and reaction pathways are presented herein, which show the advantageous features of carboxylic acid derivatives as alternative to aryl or alkyl halides in terms of reactivity and compatibility. The well-accepted mechanism of nickel- or palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative transformations involves initial oxidative addition of carboxylic acid derivatives, followed by decarbonylation or transmetalation (or insertion), and reductive elimination to generate the products, thereby regenerating the catalysts.

Abstract
Transition metal-catalyzed decarbonylative coupling reactions have emerged as a powerful alternative to conventional cross-coupling protocols due to the advantages associated with the use of carbonyl-containing functionalities as coupling electrophiles instead of commonly used organohalides or sulfates. A wide variety of novel transformations based on this concept have been successfully achieved, including decarbonylative carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions. In this Review, we summarize the recent progress in this field and present a comprehensive overview of metal-catalyzed decarbonylative coupling reactions with carbonyl derivatives.

Abstract
Organophosphorus compounds containing P-C bonds are increasingly developed as flame retardant additives due to their excellent thermal and hydrolytic stability and ease of synthesis. The latest development (since 2010) in organophosphorus flame retardants containing P-C bonds summarized in this review. In this review, we have broadly classified such phosphorus compounds based on the carbon unit linked to the phosphorus atom i.e., could be a part of either an aliphatic or an aromatic unit. We have only considered those published literature where a P-C bond was created as a part of synthetic strategy to make either an intermediate or a final organophosphorus compound with an aim to use it as a flame retardant. General synthetic strategies to create P-C bonds are briefly discussed. Most popular synthetic strategies used for developing P-C containing phosphorus based flame retardants include Michael addition, Michaelis-Arbuzov, Friedels-Crafts and Grignard reactions. In general, most flame retardant derivatives discussed in this review have been prepared via a one- to two-step synthetic strategy with relatively high yields greater than 80%. Specific examples of P-C containing flame retardants synthesized via suitable synthetic strategy and their applications on various polymer systems are described in detail. Aliphatic phosphorus compounds being liquids or low melting solids are generally applied in polymers via coatings (cellulose) or are incorporated in the bulk of the polymers (epoxy, polyurethanes) during their polymerization as reactive or non-reactive additives. Substituents on the P atoms and the chemistry of the polymer matrix greatly influence the flame retardant behavior of these compounds (condensed phase vs. the gas phase). Recently, aromatic DOPO based phosphinate flame retardants have been developed with relatively higher thermal stabilities (>250 °C). Such compounds have potential as flame retardants for high temperature processable polymers such as polyesters and polyamides. A vast variety of P-C bond containing efficient flame retardants are being developed; however, further work in terms of their economical synthetic methods, detailed impact on mechanical properties and processability, long term durability and their toxicity and environmental impact is much needed for their potential commercial exploitations.
