Abstract
Pillar[n]arenes can be constructed using a Friedel-Crafts alkylation process. However, due to the reversible nature of the alkylation, mixture of large pillar[n]arenes (n≥7) are obtained as minor products, and thus laborious purification are necessary to isolate the larger pillar[n]arenes. Moreover, inert methylene bridges are introduced during the alkylation process, and the multi-functionalization of the bridges has never been investigated. Herein, an irreversible Friedel-Crafts acylation is used to prepare pillar[n]arenes. Due to the irreversible nature of the acylation, the reaction of precursors bearing carboxylic acids and electron-rich arene rings results in a size-exclusive formation of pillar[n]arenes, in which the ring-size is determined by the precursor length. Because of this size-selective formation, laborious separation of undesired macrocycles is not necessary. Moreover, the bridges of pillar[n]arenes are selectively installed with reactive carbonyl groups using the acylation method, whose positions are determined by the precursor used. The carbonyl bridges can be easily converted into versatile functional groups, leading to various laterally modified pillar[n]arenes, which cannot be accessed by the alkylation strategy.

Abstract
Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) are the smallest possible armchair carbon nanotubes, the properties of which strongly depend on their ring size. They can be further tuned by either peripheral functionalization or by replacing phenylene rings for other aromatic units. Here we show how four novel donor-acceptor chromophores were obtained by incorporating fluorenone or 2-(9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)malononitrile into the loops of two differently sized CPPs. Synthetically, we managed to perform late-stage functionalization of the fluorenone-based rings by high-yielding Knoevenagel condensations. The structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analyses, which revealed that replacing a phenylene for a fused-ring-system acceptor introduces additional strain. The donor-acceptor characters of the CPPs were supported by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies, electrochemical studies (displaying the CPPs as multi-redox systems undergoing reversible or quasi-reversible redox events), as well as by computations. The oligophenylene parts were found to comprise the electron donor units of the macrocycles and the fluorenone parts the acceptor units.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and characterization of two new fluorophores, consisting of a [8]cyclo-para-phenylene core in which two phenylenes are bridged by either a nitrogen atom or a carbonyl group. The nitrogen bridge increases the HOMO-LUMO gap, whereas the carbonyl bridge decreases it. These results provide guidelines to control the electronic properties of nanohoops.

Abstract
This review aims to discuss organic semiconductors constructed on dihydroindenofluorene positional isomers, which are key molecular scaffolds in organic electronics. Bridged oligophenylenes are key organic semiconductors that have allowed the development of organic electronic technologies. Dihydroindenofluorenes (DHIFs) belong to the family of bridged oligophenylenes constructed on a terphenyl backbone. They have proven to be very promising building blocks for the construction of highly efficient organic semiconductors for all OE devices, namely organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), phosphorescent OLEDs, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), solar cells, etc.

Abstract
Herein, we report a modular synthesis providing access to substituted cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) of different sizes. A key synthon introducing two geminal ester units was efficiently prepared by [2+2+2] cycloaddition. This building block can be conveniently converted to macrocyclic precursors controlling the ring size of the final CPP. Efficient reductive aromatization through single-electron transfer provided the substituted nanohoops in a straightforward manner. The tBu ester substitution pattern enables a tube-like arrangement in the solid-state governed by van der Waals interactions that exhibits one of the tightest packings of CPPs in tube direction, thus opening new avenues in the crystal design of CPPs.

Abstract
Conjugated nanohoops provide a platform to study structure-property relationships; they are attractive hosts for supramolecular chemistry as well as promising candidates as new organic materials. We herein present [n]cyclodibenzopentalenes ([n]CDBPs) as antiaromatic analogues of [n]cycloparaphenylenes. Platinum-mediated macrocyclization of dibenzopentalene boronic esters provided the trimer and tetramer with strain energies of up to 80 kcal mol-1. In the solid state, the cylindrical [4]CDBP molecules align to form columnar structures. The larger hoop [4]CDBP binds both fullerenes C60 and C70 with temperature-dependent exchange behavior, providing higher activation energies for the exchange compared to [10]CPP. The antiaromatic character of the [n]CDBPs paired with the cyclic conjugation leads to high HOMO energies and lowered LUMO energies with band gaps below 2 eV. This work presents a new class of the antiaromatic and nonalternant curved nanocarbons with intriguing supramolecular and ambipolar optoelectronic properties.

Abstract
In the last 13 years several synthetic strategies were developed that provide access to [n]cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs) and related conjugated nanohoops. A number of potential applications emerged, including optoelectronic devices, and their use as templates for carbon nanomaterials and in supramolecular chemistry. To tune the structural or optoelectronic properties of carbon nanohoops beyond the size-dependent effect known for [n]CPPs, a variety of aromatic rings other than benzene were introduced. In this Review, we provide an overview of the syntheses, properties, and applications of conjugated nanohoops beyond [n]CPPs with intrinsic donor/acceptor structure or such that contain acceptor, donor, heteroaromatic or polycyclic aromatic units within the hoop as well as conjugated nanobelts.

Abstract
Molecular compounds with permanent tubular architectures displaying radial π-conjugation are exceedingly rare. Their radial and axial delocalization presents them with unique optical and electronic properties, such as remarkable tuning of their Stokes shifts, and redox switching between global and local aromaticity. Although these tubular compounds display large internal void spaces, these attributes have not been extensively explored, thus presenting future opportunities in the development of materials. By using cutting-edge synthetic methodologies to bend aromatic surfaces, large opportunities in synthesis, property discovery, and applications are expected in new members of this family of conjugated molecular nanotubes.

Abstract
The first example of a BN-doped cycloparaphenylene BN-[10]CPP was synthesized and characterized. Its reactivity and photophysical properties were evaluated in direct comparison to its carbonaceous analogues Mes-[10]CPP and [10]CPP. While the photophysical properties of BN-[10]CPP remains similar to its carbonaceous analogues, the electronic structure changes associated with the introduction of a 1,2-azaborine BN heterocycle into a CPP scaffold enables facile and selective late-stage functionalizations that cannot be accomplished with carbonaceous CPPs. Specifically, Ir-catalyzed hydrogenation of BN-[10]CPP selectively reduces the BN heterocyclic ring, which upon hydrolysis produces a rare example of a macrocyclic paraphenylene 6 incorporating the versatile ketone functionality within the macrocyclic ring.

Abstract
The serendipitous isolation of very small amounts of two naphthocyclobutadiene (NCB) derivatives has led to the computational re-examination of the electrocyclization of Z,Z-3,5-octadiene-1,7-diyne as well as the experimental and computational study of diethynylindeno[2,1-a]fluorene derivatives that contain the 3,5-octadiene-1,7-diyne motif as part of a larger π-framework. In both cases the calculated potential energy surface strongly implicates two successive electrocyclic reactions to afford the antiaromatic products. With the octadienediyne fragment locked in the reactive conformation, the postulated diethynylindeno[2,1-a]fluorene intermediates afford the NCBs in modest to good yields. X-ray crystallography of four NCBs as well as NICS-XY scan calculations show that the paratropic motif is located primarily in the benzocyclobutadiene fragment within the larger π-scaffold.

Abstract
Superelectrophilic-initiated direct C-H functionalization of thiophenes at the β-position was developed. A series of trans-stereospecific [2,1-a]-IF-thiophene-fused cyclic compounds (4) with saddle-shaped structure were prepared in 17-30% yields through a one-pot superelectrophilic Friedel-Crafts reaction of dihydroindenofluorene with thiophene derivatives. From the crystal packing analyses of 4a, its skeleton shows both strong intermolecular π-π stacking and C-H···π stacking. Furthermore, the ring-dependent photophysical properties of 4 were confirmed by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as through the study of their fluorescence quantum yield.

Abstract
A synthetic pathway to a functionalized tetrahydro[5]phenacene was developed, which served as a precursor, leading to a dehydrobenzo[32]annulene macrocycle containing four carbon-carbon triple bonds. The high efficiency of the macrocyclization step can be attributed to the structural rigidity of its immediate precursor. Hydrogenation of the four carbon-carbon triple bonds produced a macrocycle bearing a carbon framework of [16]cyclophenacene as the shortest macrocyclic belt-like structure of an (8,8)armchair carbon nanotube.
