Abstract
Regiodivergent transition-metal-catalyzed oxidative C5- and ortho-alkynylation of 2-arylthiazoles have been demonstrated. Namely, Pd(II)-catalysis selectively generated C5-alkynylated products from the reaction of 2-arylthiazoles and terminal alkynes. In contrast, Ru(II)-catalysis exclusively provided ortho-alkynylated products from the same substrates. This protocol features a wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, high atom-economy, and exclusive regioselectivity. The alkynylated products can be readily converted into highly valuable synthons, which hold potential for applications in the fields of medicinal chemistry and materials science.

Abstract
o-Alkynylaryl 2-cyanoacrylates have been disclosed as a new synthon for the regioselective synthesis of isoquinolones and naphthyridinones under mild reaction conditions. The attractive feature of this investigation includes carbon-carbon double bond cleavage under metal-free conditions by an intramolecular SN2 reaction. Incorporating two distinct C-I bonds in the resulting products provides facile opportunity for structural elaboration. The viability of the present protocol was unveiled by postfunctionalization with drug analogues and gram-scale synthesis.

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed asymmetric C-H bond annulation strategy offers a versatile platform, allowing the construction of complex P-chiral molecules through atom- and step-economical fashion. However, regioselective insertion of π-coupling partner between M-C bond with high enantio-induction remain elusive. Using commercially available Co(II) salt and chiral-Salox ligands, we demonstrate an unusual protocol for the regio-reversal, enantioselective C-H bond annulation of phosphinamide with bromoalkyne through desymmetrization. The reaction proceeds through ligand-assisted enantiodetermining cyclocobaltation followed by regioselective insertion of bromoalkyne between Co-C, subsequent reductive elimination, and halogen exchange with carboxylate resulted in P-stereogenic compounds in excellent ee (up to >99 %). The isolation of cobaltacycle involved in the catalytic cycle and the outcome of control experiments provide support for a plausible mechanism.

Abstract
Ruthenium catalyzed C-H activation is well known for its high tolerance towards the functional group and broad applicability in organic synthesis and molecular sciences, with significant applications in pharmaceutical industries, material sciences, and polymer industry. In the last few decades, enormous progress has been observed with ruthenium-catalyzed C-H activation chemistry. Notably, the vast majority of the C-H functionalization known in the literature are intermolecular, although the intramolecular variant provides fascinating new structural facet starting from the simple molecular scaffolds. Intramolecular C-H functionalization is atom economical and step efficient, results in less formation of undesired products which is easy to purify. This has created a lot of interest in organic chemistry in developing new synthetic strategies for such functionalization. The focus of this review is to present the relatively unexplored intramolecular functionalization of C-H bonds into C-X (X=C, N, O, S) bonds utilizing versatile ruthenium catalysts, their scope, and brief mechanistic discussion.

Abstract
An efficient protocol for the construction of structurally diverse 2-pyridone derivatives from imines and α,β-unsaturated acid chlorides in a single operation is reported. The target compounds, including coumarin-8-oxoprotoberbine analogues and lamellarin G isomers, were prepared via thermal cyclization of the in situ generated enamides followed by thermal dehydrogenation. The cyclization of enamides was achieved by the introduction of an electron-withdrawing group on the α-carbon of acid chlorides. This methodology allows quick access to polycyclic Pechmann dyes via rare double oxidative cyclizations of dienamides under mild conditions.

Abstract
A highly selective ruthenium-catalyzed C–H activation/annulation of alkyne-tethered N-alkoxybenzamides has been developed. In this reaction, diverse products from inverse annulation can be obtained in moderate to good yields with high functional group compatibility. Insightful experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the reaction to the inverse annulation follows the Ru(ii)–Ru(iv)–Ru(ii) pathway involving N–O bond cleavage prior to alkyne insertion. This is highly different compared to the conventional mechanism of transition metal-catalyzed C–H activation/annulation with alkynes, involving alkyne insertion prior to N–O bond cleavage. Via this pathway, the in situ generated acetic acid from the N–H/C–H activation step facilitates the N–O bond cleavage to give the Ru-nitrene species. Besides the conventional mechanism forming the products via standard annulation, an alternative and novel Ru(ii)–Ru(iv)–Ru(ii) mechanism featuring N–O cleavage preceding alkyne insertion has been proposed, affording a new understanding of transition metal-catalyzed C–H activation/annulation. A highly selective ruthenium-catalyzed C–H activation/annulation through a pathway involving N–O bond cleavage prior to alkyne insertion is developed.![]()

Abstract
Activation of C-H bonds assisted by a directing group is indispensable in organic synthesis. Among them, utilizing oxidative directing groups that can serve as an internal oxidant to drive the Mn/Mn+2 catalytic cycle has recently become a promising strategy. A survey of published reactions involving N-alkoxyamides or N-acyloxyamides reveals that not all N-O bonds act as an internal oxidant. We have therefore systematically investigated the effect of the oxidative groups on a model reaction catalyzed by Ru(II), Rh(III), and Pd(II) complexes. DFT calculations show that N-methoxy and N-acyloxy groups oxidize Ru(II) to Ru(IV) and Rh(III) to Rh(V), but cannot oxidize a cyclo-Pd(II) intermediate to Pd(IV). The stability of the metal imido intermediate 7-M (M = Ru, Rh, and Pd) controls whether the oxidation occurs or not. N-Acyloxy groups show a more pronounced selectivity than N-methoxy to oxidize Ru(II) and Rh(III) species, while no distinctive effect is observed for Pd(II).

Abstract
An efficient sequence based on the Ugi-azide reaction and rhodium(III)-catalyzed intermolecular annulation has been established for the preparation of tetrazole-isoquinolone/pyridone hybrids. Several N-acylaminomethyltetrazoles were reacted with arylacetylenes to form the hybrid products in moderate to very good yields. The method relies on the capacity of the rhodium catalyst to promote C(sp2)-H activation in the presence of a suitable directing group. The Ugi-azide reaction provides broad molecular diversity and enables the introduction of the tetrazole moiety, which may further assist the catalytic reaction by coordinating the metal center. The scope of the isoquinolones is very wide and may be extended to the preparation of complex compounds having heterocyclic moieties such as pyridone, furan, thiophene and pyrrole, as well as the corresponding benzo-fused derivatives. The developed procedure is simple, reproducible and does not require inert conditions.

Abstract
Catalytic C-H functionalization has emerged as an efficient alternative to traditional coupling reactions. However, some of these reactions depend on environmentally harmful solvents, weakening the overall green nature of these methods. As organic processes consume large amount of solvents, the use of less harmful solvents enhance the sustainability of these reactions. Herein, we present an overview of transition metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions for the synthesis of heterocycles in sustainable solvents based on CHEM21 solvent selection guide.

Abstract
The alkynylation of naphthols takes place with total regiocontrol at the peri position of the hydroxyl group in the presence of [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 as the catalyst. This reaction features high functional group tolerance. The related ortho-alkynylation of benzoic acids proceeds under similar conditions and also shows wide functional group tolerance. Both reactions proceed through metalation, insertion of the alkyne, and bromide elimination.
