Abstract
Syntheses of (partially) aromatic nitrogen heterocycles increasingly rely on transition-metal catalyzed C-C- and C-N-cross-coupling reactions. Here we describe a different approach to the synthesis of indolines by a domino C(sp3)-H activation, 1,2-addition, and defluorinative SNAr-cyclization sequence to provide the target 1,2-diarylindolines (1,2-diaryl-2,3-dihydroindoles) from ortho-fluorinated methyl-arenes and N-aryl imines (benzylidene anilines) in a cyclocondensation that is mediated by potassium hexamethyldisilazide (KHMDS) as base exclusively. This transition-metal-free process via C-H and C-F bond activation provides a one-step entry into a wide array of indoline scaffolds (43 examples, up to 96 % yield). This privileged substructure is common in natural products and pharmaceuticals alike, and cannot be accessed by traditional condensation reactions.

Abstract
The addition of diarylmethanes or methylarenes via activation of benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds to N-aryl imines proceeds under catalysis by alkali hexamethyldisilazide (HMDS) base to give N-(1,2,2-triarylethyl)anilines or N-(1,2-diarylethyl)anilines, respectively. In the presence of 10 mol % of LiHMDS at room temperature, the diarylmethane addition equilibrates within 20-30 s and is driven to near completion by cooling the reaction mixture to -25 °C, providing N-(1,2,2-triarylethyl)aniline in a >90% yield.

Abstract
A novel cobalt-catalyzed protocol for the synthesis of carbinol derivatives and benzil derivatives has been developed. In the presence of CoI2 as the catalyst and tmphen (3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) as the ligand, the corresponding arylated products were obtained from the addition of aryltrimethylgermanes to aromatic aldehydes and arylglyoxals in moderate to excellent yields under air atmosphere.

Abstract
Cobalt-catalyzed regioselective three-component arylcarboxylation of acrylate with aryl bromides and carbon dioxide has been developed. The reaction is carried out by using cobalt chloride as a precatalyst and zinc powder as a reducing reagent under CO2 (1 atm) at 40 °C. A range of aryl bromides are used for this reaction, leading to a series of valuable carboxylic acids with high regioselectivity and functional-group compatibility. Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations indicate that this arylcarboxylation reaction involves the reaction of CO2 with a cobalt enolate intermediate to form the C-C bond.

Abstract
An unprecedented bidentate directing-group-assisted cobalt-catalyzed oxidative C-H activation of aryl hydrazones followed by a syn-diastereoselective [3 + 2] annulation reaction has been achieved, employing allenes as the annulation partners. The selective 2,3-migratory insertion of allenes with arylcobalt(III) species and the subsequent intramolecular diastereoselective nucleophilic addition of η1-allylcobalt onto the imine resulted in [3 + 2] annulation over the alternative [4 + 2] annulation. Furthermore, the oxidative annulation obviates the need for stoichiometric metal oxidants and proceeds under aerobic conditions.

Abstract
This review focuses on providing comprehensive highlights of the recent advances in the field of cobalt-catalysed C-H functionalization and related synthetic concepts, relying on these through oxygen atom coordination. In recent years, 3d transition metal (Fe, Co, Cu & Ni) catalysed C-H functionalization reactions have received immense attention on account of its higher abundance and low cost, as compared to noble metals such as Ir, Rh, Ru and Pd. Among the first-row transition metals, cobalt is one of the extensively used metals for sustainable synthesis due to its unique reactivity towards the functionalization of inert C-H bonds. The functionalization of the inert C-H bond necessitates a proximal directing group. In this context, strongly coordinating nitrogen atom directed C-H functionalizations have been well explored. Nevertheless, strongly coordinating nitrogen-containing scaffolds, such as pyridine, pyrimidine, and 8-aminoquinoline, have to be installed and removed in a separate process. In contrast, C-H functionalizations through weakly coordinating atoms, such as oxygen, are largely underdeveloped. Since the oxygen atom is a part of many readily available functional groups, such as aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and esters, it could be used as directing groups for selective C-H functionalization reactions without any modification. Thus, the use of 3d transition metals, such as cobalt, along with weakly coordinating (oxygen) directing groups for C-H functionalization reactions are more sustainable, especially for the large-scale production of pharmaceuticals in industries. During the last decade, notable progress has been made using this concept. Nonetheless, almost all the reports are restricted to the formation of C-C and C-N bond. Therefore, there is a wide scope for developing this area for the formation of other bonds, such as C-X (halogens), C-B, C-S, and C-Se.

Abstract
The amide base generated in situ from tetramethylammonium fluoride and N(TMS)3 catalyzes the synthesis of 1,3-diene from an allylbenzene and carbonyl compound. The system is applicable to the transformations of a variety of allylbenzenes with functional groups (halogen, methyl, phenyl, methoxy, dimethylamino, ester, and amide moieties). Acyclic and cyclic diaryl ketones, pivalophenone, pivalaldehyde, and isobutyrophenone are used as coupling partners. The role of transβ-methyl stilbenes in product formation is also elucidated.

Abstract
Allylic substitution, pioneered by the work of Tsuji and Trost, has been an invaluable tool in the synthesis of complex molecules for decades. An attractive alternative to allylic substitution is the direct functionalization of allylic C-H bonds of unactivated alkenes, thereby avoiding the need for prefunctionalization. Significant early advances in allylic C-H functionalization were made using palladium catalysis. However, Pd-catalyzed reactions are generally limited to the functionalization of terminal olefins with stabilized nucleophiles. Insights from Li, Cossy, and Tanaka demonstrated the utility of RhCpx catalysts for allylic functionalization. Since these initial reports, a number of key intermolecular Co-, Rh-, and Ir-catalyzed allylic C-H functionalization reactions have been reported, offering significant complementarity to the Pd-catalyzed reactions. Herein, we report a summary of recent advances in intermolecular allylic C-H functionalization via group IX-metal π-allyl complexes. Mechanism-driven development of new catalysts is highlighted, and the potential for future developments is discussed.

Abstract
Simple feedstock organic molecules, especially alkenes, are attractive starting materials in organic synthesis because of their wide availability. Direct utilization of such bulk, inert organic molecules for practical and selective chemical reactions, however, remains limited. Herein, we developed a ternary hybrid catalyst system comprising a photoredox catalyst, a hydrogen-atom-transfer catalyst, and a chromium complex catalyst, enabling catalytic allylation of aldehydes with simple alkenes, including feedstock lower alkenes. The reaction proceeded under visible-light irradiation at room temperature and with high functional group tolerance. The reaction was extended to an asymmetric variant by employing a chiral chromium complex catalyst.

Abstract
A volatile organic solvent-free and choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic system (DES)-mediated sp3-CH functionalization of acetophenones 1 with benzyl alcohols 2 to the corresponding α, β-saturated ketones 3 is accounted for. The domino dehydrogenation-aldol condensation (hydrogenation borrowing concept) has been successfully attempted with palladium-tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) [Pd(PPh3)4] catalyst-xantphos ligand combination. Furthermore, a sequential Friedländer reaction of 2-aminobenzophenone 4 and palladium-catalyzed α-alkylation of the quinolinyl methyl ketone with benzyl alcohols 2 in ChCl-based DES have been successfully investigated. The C-C bond formation through sp3-CH functionalization involves a wide scope of the substrates, high atom efficiency, chemoselectivity, and environmentally friendly strategy.

Abstract
We describe a hybrid system that realizes cooperativity between an organophotoredox acridinium catalyst and a chiral chromium complex catalyst, thereby enabling unprecedented exploitation of unactivated hydrocarbon alkenes as precursors to chiral allylchromium nucleophiles for asymmetric allylation of aldehydes. The reaction proceeds under visible light irradiation at room temperature, affording the corresponding homoallylic alcohols with a diastereomeric ratio >20/1 and up to 99% ee. The addition of Mg(ClO4)2 markedly enhanced both the reactivity and enantioselectivity.

Abstract
We herein describe a cobalt/Xantphos-catalyzed regioselective addition of simple alkenes to acetophenone derivatives, affording branched homoallylic alcohols in high yields with perfect branch selectivities. The intermediate of the reaction would be a nucleophilic allylcobalt(I) species generated via cleavage of the low reactive allylic C(sp3)–H bond of simple terminal alkenes.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular silylation of alkyl C-H bonds has been developed that occurs with unusual selectivity for the C-H bonds located δ to the oxygen atom of an alcohol-derived silyl ether over typically more reactive C-H bonds more proximal to the same oxygen atom. (Hydrido)silyl ethers, generated in situ by dehydrogenative coupling of tertiary alcohols with diethylsilane, undergo regioselective silylation at a primary C-H bond δ to the hydroxyl group in the presence of [(Xantphos)Rh(Cl)] as catalyst. Oxidation of the resulting 6-membered oxasilolanes generates 1,4-diols. This silylation and oxidation sequence provides an efficient method to synthesize 1,4-diols by a hydroxyl-directed, aliphatic C-H bond functionalization reaction and is distinct from the synthesis of 1,3-diols from alcohols catalyzed by iridium. Mechanistic studies show that the rhodium-catalyzed silylation of alkyl C-H bonds occurs with a resting state and relative rates for elementary steps that are significantly different from those for the rhodium-catalyzed silylation of aryl C-H bonds. The resting state of the catalyst is a (Xantphos)Rh(I)(SiR3)(norbornene) complex, and an analogue was synthesized and characterized crystallographically. The rate-limiting step of the process is oxidative addition of the δ C-H bond to Rh. Computational studies elucidated the origin of high selectivity for silylation of the δ C-H bond when Xantphos-ligated rhodium is the catalyst. A high barrier for reductive elimination from the six-membered metalacyclic, secondary alkyl intermediate formed by cleavage of the γ C-H bond and low barrier for reductive elimination from the seven-membered metalacyclic, primary alkyl intermediate formed by cleavage of the δ C-H accounts for the selective functionalization of the δ C-H bond.
