Selective Ortho-π-Extension of Perylene Diimides for Rylene Dyes

1-Substituted Perylene Derivatives by Anionic Cyclodehydrogenation: Analysis of the Reaction Mechanism

Perylene derivatives constitute a promising class of compounds with technological applications mainly due to their optoelectronic properties. One mechanism proposed to synthesize them, starting from binaphthyl derivatives, is anionic cyclodehydrogenation (under reductive conditions). However, the scope of this reaction is limited. In the present study, we report a theoretical and experimental analysis of this particular reaction mechanism for its use in the synthesis of 1-substituted perylenes. Different substituents at position 2 of 1,1'-binaphthalene were evaluated: -OCH₃, -OSi(CH₃)₂C(CH₃)₃, and -N(CH₃)₂. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the proposed mechanism, we suggest that the cyclization takes place from binaphthyl dianion instead of its radical anion. This dianion has an open-shell diradical nature, and this could be the species that was detected by EPR in previous studies. The O-substituted derivatives could not afford the perylene derivatives since their radical anions fragment and the necessary binaphthyl dianion could not be formed. On the other hand, 49% of N,N-dimethylperylen-1-amine was obtained starting from the N-substituted 2-binapthyl derivative as a substrate, employing a simpler experimental methodology.

Access to Thienopyridine and Thienoquinoline Derivatives via Site-Selective C-H Bond Functionalization and Annulation

To develop of an effective synthetic methodology for biologically relevant thienopyridines, a concise and efficient protocol is described for the synthesis of a series of substituted thienopyridine and thienoquinoline derivatives with high selectivity using EtOCS₂K as the sulfur source. The reaction proceeds via metal-free, site-selective C-H bond thiolation and cyclization of the alkynylpyridine and alkynylquinoline substrates.

Recent Advances in Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. The article covers literature published during the period of 2016-2020, providing an update to our first review of this topic (Chem. Rev. 2017, 117 (4), 3479-3716).

Naphthodithiophene Diimide Based Chiral π-Conjugated Nanopillar Molecules

The synthesis, structures, and properties of [4]cyclonaphthodithiophene diimides ([4]C-NDTIs) are described. NDTIs as important n-type building blocks were catenated in the α-positions of thiophene rings via an unusual electrochemical-oxidation-promoted macrocyclization route. The thiophene-thiophene junction in [4]C-NDTIs results in an ideal pillar shape. This interesting topology, along with appealing electronic and optical properties inherited from the NDTI units, endows the [4]C-NDTIs with both near-infrared (NIR) light absorptions, strong excitonic coupling, and tight encapsulation of C₆₀ . Stable orientations of the NDTI units in the nanopillars lead to stable inherent chirality, which enables detailed circular dichroism studies on the impact of isomeric structures on π-conjugation. Remarkably, the [4]C-NDTIs maintain the strong π-π stacking abilities of NDTI units and thus adopt two-dimensional (2D) lattice arrays at the molecular level. These nanopillar molecules have great potential to mimic natural photosynthetic systems for the development of multifunctional organic materials.

Imide-Functionalized Helical PAHs: A Step towards New Chiral Functional Materials

Attachment of cyclic imide groups to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) leads to fascinating electronic and luminescence properties, with rylene diimides being a representative example. The close to unity fluorescence quantum yields and electron-acceptor properties render them suitable for application in organic electronics and photovoltaics. Recent reports show that, in line with planar PAHs, the imide functionalization has also endowed helical three-dimensional PAHs with similar beneficial photophysical properties. In this article, we have summarized the state-of-the-art research developments in the field of helicene–imide hybrid functional molecules, with a particular focus on synthesis, (chir)optical and redox properties, and applications in electronics. Additionally, we have highlighted our recent work, introducing a novel family of functional chiral molecules, namely, [n]helicene diimides, as three-dimensional relatives of rylene diimides.

One-Pot Synthesis of 2-R-Naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene-4,9-diones via Cyclization of 2-(R-Ethynyl)-1,4-naphthoquinones with Na2S2O3

The concise and efficient one-pot synthesis of 2-R-naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene-4,9-diones from 2-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone and alkynes has been developed. The reaction proceeds through the formation of 2-(R-ethynyl)-1,4-naphthoquinones, which undergo transformation with Na₂S₂O₃ to 2-R-naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene-4,9-diones via C-H sulfuration, accompanied by the formation of the aromatic Bunte salt, followed by its air oxidation and 5-endo-dig cyclization. The protocol is characterized by simplicity, good tolerance for functional groups, relatively mild conditions, and commercially available starting compounds.

Dithienocoronene diimide (DTCDI)-derived triads for high-performance air-stable, solution-processed balanced ambipolar organic field-effect transistors

Developing ambipolar organic semiconducting materials is essential for use in complementary-like inverters and light-emitting transistors. In this study, three new dithienocoronenediimide (DTCDI)-derived triads, DTCDI-BT, DTCDI-BBT and DTCDI-BNT, were designed and synthesized, in which various sizes of terminal groups, i.e., thiophene (T), benzo[b]thiophene (BT) and naphtha[2,3-b]thiophene (NT) were substituted at the α-positions of the two thiophene rings of DTCDI, respectively. The DFT calculations reveal that the HOMO energy levels of the three triads when compared to that of the parent DTCDI-core (-5.99 eV) are significantly increased to -5.59, -5.59 and -5.45 eV for DTCDI-BT, DTCDI-BBT and DTCDI-BNT, respectively, whereas the LUMO energy levels (-3.07 eV ∼ -3.14 eV) are almost identical with that of the DTCDI-core (-3.10 eV). The results predict that the triads could possess ambipolar transport properties in organic field-effect transistor (OFET) applications. In fact, under an ambient atmosphere, solution-processed bottom-gate top-contact (BGTC) transistors exhibit ambipolar charge transport properties by tuning the HOMOs of the DTCDI-based triads so that they were suitable for hole injection, resulting in balanced maximum electron and hole mobilities of 1.66 × 10-3 and 1.02 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 for DTCDI-BT, 2.60 × 10-2 and 3.60 × 10-2 cm2 V-1 s-1 for DTCDI-BBT, and 2.43 × 10-3 and 4.15 × 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 for DTCDI-BNT, respectively. This is the first time that the DTCDI building block has been used to develop ambipolar small molecular semiconductors, and achieved a device performance comparable to that of the DTCDI-based polymeric semiconductors. In addition, DTCDI-BBT-based complementary-like inverters were made, and the inverter devices operated well in both p-mode and n-mode under ambient conditions. The results show that the DTCDI is a promising π-electron-deficient building block which could be further used to develop ambipolar semiconducting materials for OFET devices.

π-Extended perylene diimide double-heterohelicenes as ambipolar organic semiconductors for broadband circularly polarized light detection

Despite great challenges, the development of new molecular structures with multiple and even conflicting characteristics are eagerly pursued for exploring advanced applications. To develop high-performance chiral organic semiconducting molecules, a distorted π-system is required for strong coupling with circularly polarized light (CPL), whereas planar π-stacking systems are necessary for high charge-carrier mobility. To address this dilemma, in this work, we introduce a skeleton merging approach through distortion of a perylene diimide (PDI) core with four fused heteroaromatics to form an ortho-π-extended PDI double-[7]heterohelicene. PDI double helicene inherits a high dissymmetry factor from the helicene skeleton, and the extended π-planar system concurrently maintains a high level of charge transport properties. In addition, ortho-π-extension of the PDI skeleton brings about near-infrared (NIR) light absorption and ambipolar charge transport abilities, endowing the corresponding organic phototransistors with high photoresponsivity of 450 and 120 mA W-1 in p- and n-type modes respectively, along with a high external quantum efficiency (89%) under NIR light irradiations. Remarkably, these multiple characteristics enable high-performance broadband CPL detections up to NIR spectral region with chiral organic semiconductors.

Elemental-Sulfur-Incorporated Cyclizations of Pyrrolidines Leading to Thienopyrroles

We report, herein, the synthesis of thieno[3,2-b]pyrroles from the direct oxidative [4 + 1] cyclization of 2-alkynyl pyrrolidines with elemental sulfur. This transformation likely originates from electrophilic attack at the β-position of pyrrolidine followed by an intramolecular thienannulation to deliver the desired product. Mechanistic investigation suggests that the present reaction involves the formation of dihydrothieno[3,2-b]pyrrole as an intermediate.

Recent Advances in Sulfur-Containing Heterocycle Formation via Direct C–H Sulfuration with Elemental Sulfur

The synthesis of sulfur heterocycles via the construction of C–S bonds has received considerable attention due to their biological value and extensive pharmaceutical application. While diverse sulfurating agents have been developed over the past few decades, in this regard, elemental sulfur, with advantages of low toxicity, odorless nature and chemical stability, has great potential for the construction of diverse sulfur heterocycles through its direct incorporation into the target molecules in a concise way. Direct functionalization of inert C–H bonds can shorten the number of reaction steps and minimize the amount of waste formed. Hence, heteroannulations via direct C–H sulfuration is considered to be an attractive strategy for the synthesis of sulfur heterocycles. In the last few years, a vast array of concise systems have been reported for the synthesis of some valuable sulfur heterocycles such as thiophenes, thienoindoles, thienothiazoles, thiazoles, benzothiazoles, and thiadiazoles through direct C–H sulfuration/annulations with elemental sulfur. These are discussed in detail in this review.

Dual Thermal-/Electrical-Responsive Luminescent ‘Smart’ Window

As buildings are a large energy user, it is important to not only reduce their consumption, but also have them generate their own electricity. Here, we describe a smart window that could reduce electricity consumption, normally used for air conditioning and lighting, by absorbing excess solar radiation with dichroic fluorescent dye molecules aligned in a switchable liquid crystal host and guiding the re-emitted light energy to the edges of the device, where it can be used to generate electricity via attached photovoltaic cells. The liquid crystals are responsive both to temperature changes and applied electrical fields. At higher temperatures, transmission decreases due to increased disorder in the liquid crystals, while the application of an electrical field increases transmission by effectively realigning the dyes for minimal absorption. Using alternative configurations, a window with a transparent rest state was also produced, in which transmission can be decreased by applying an electrical field; the thermal response remains identical.

Trisulfur radical anion-triggered stitching thienannulation: rapid access to largely π-extended thienoacenes

Largely π-extended rylene diimide-fused thienoacenes, a new family of fully fused electron donor-acceptor (D-A) molecules, have been readily synthesized by a novel trisulfur radical anion (S3˙-)-triggered stitching thienannulation strategy. The ladder-type fused thiophene cores are constructed in a stitching manner through multiple carbon-sulfur bond formation between acetylenic rylene dyes and S3˙-. A detailed mechanistic study of these stitching thienannulations unveiled the multiple reactivities of S3˙-. Physical properties of the newly formed D-A, A-D-A, and D-A-D type thienoacenes have also been investigated, which revealed their precisely controllable electronic properties.
