Iron(III)-Catalyzed Domino Claisen Rearrangement/Regio- and Chemoselective Aerobic Dehydrogenative Cyclization of β-Naphthyl-Substituted-Allenylmethyl Ether

Divergent Transformations of 2-Nitro-1H-benzo[f]chromenes in Reactions with Alkylidenemalononitriles: Access to Naphtho[2,1-b]furans via Base-Mediated Pyran Ring Contraction

The action of 2-(1-arylethylidene)malononitriles on 2-nitro-1H-benzo[f]chromenes in the presence of Et3N and MoO3·2H2O results in naphtho[2,1-b]furans containing an allylidenemalononitrile unit in the α-position. The reaction proceeds with contraction of the pyran ring via a cascade carba-Michael addition/retro-oxa-Michael reaction/tautomerization/SN2/oxidation process. In contrast, the reaction of 2-nitro-1H-benzo[f]chromenes with the cyclic Knoevenagel adduct derived from 1-indanone and malononitrile leads to dihydroindeno[1,2-c]xanthenes. The possibility of further transformations of naphtho[2,1-b]furan derivatives as useful precursors and their optical properties were also investigated.

Palladium-Catalyzed Oxidative Annulation Leading to Substituted Pyrrolo[3,2,1-jk]carbazoles by Sequential C-N and C-C Bond Formation

A novel regioselective annulation of propargylic alcohols with simple carbazoles for the construction of [3,2,1-jk]carbazole scaffolds is described to be the first example of intermolecular synthesis of [3,2,1-jk]carbazoles from simple carbazoles. In situ synthesis of propargyl alcohols from simple, cheap, and easily accessible ketones has also been developed during the one-pot synthesis of [3,2,1-jk]carbazoles.

Organocatalytic (Z/E)-Selective Synthesis of 3-Vinylnaphthofurans via a Formal (3 + 2) Cycloaddition

A formal (3 + 2) cycloaddition of 1,4-enediones with 2-naphthols was established under the catalysis of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid as an organocatalyst, leading to the efficient synthesis of structurally diverse 3-vinylnaphthofurans with high yields and excellent (Z/E)-selectivities (up to 96% yield, all >20:1 Z/E). This formal (3 + 2) cycloaddition involved a cascade reaction process, and the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the structure of 3-vinylnaphthofurans should play an important role in controlling the (Z/E)-selectivity of the newly formed vinyl group. Moreover, this class of 3-vinylnaphthofurans was discovered to have an axial chirality. This work provides an organocatalytic approach for constructing multi-substituted vinylnaphthofurans via a cascade reaction with excellent control of the (Z/E)-selectivity, which will serve as a useful strategy for synthesizing vinylnaphthofurans via in situ construction of the furan core and formation of the vinyl group.

FeCl3-Catalyzed Synthesis of Tanshinlactone Analogues from 1H-Indene-1,2,3-triones and Alkynes

Tanshinlactone has been found in several natural products and biologically active compounds. Herein, a new FeCl₃-catalyzed strategy using 1H-indene-1,2,3-triones and alkynes as starting materials is reported to obtain various tanshinlactone derivatives. This protocol has the advantages of involving low cost, environmentally benign catalysts, simple reaction conditions, and a broad range of substrates.

Design, synthesis, and insecticidal activities of propargyloxy-naphthalene-sulfonamide derivatives

In our previous studies, a kind of novel benzenesulfonamides was found to be a candidate insecticidal compounds. It was shown that propargyloxy and sulfonamide groups are pharmacodynamic groups. One hundred and twenty-six (126) naphthalenesulfonamides derivatives with propargyloxy functionality were designed and synthesized, and their insecticidal activities were determined. Some of them showed outstanding activity, with LC₅₀ values as low as 0.202 mg ml^-1, much lower than that of the positive control celangulin V (23.9 mg ml^-1). In addition, the structure-activity relationships were discussed, and molecular docking was used to verify the binding mode of the compound and the target receptor.

Recent Advances in Catalytic [3,3]-Sigmatropic Rearrangements

Carbon–carbon bond formation by [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement is a fundamental and powerful method that has been used to build organic molecules for a long time. Initially, Claisen and Cope rearrangements proceeded at high temperatures with limited scopes. By introducing catalytic systems, highly functionalized substrates have become accessible for forming complex structures under mild conditions, and asymmetric synthesis can be achieved by using chiral catalytic systems. This review describes recent breakthroughs in catalytic [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements since 2016. Detailed reaction mechanisms are discussed to enable an understanding of the reactivity and selectivity of the reactions. Finally, this review is inspires the development of new cascade reaction pathways employing catalytic [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement as related methodologies for the synthesis of complex functional molecules.

Palladium-catalyzed ortho-vinylation of β-naphthols with α-trifluoromethyl allyl carbonates: one-pot access to naphtho[2,1-b]furans

Highly regio- and stereoselective palladium-catalyzed ortho-vinylation of β-naphthols (2) has been reported using easily accessible CF₃-allyl carbonates (1). The regioselective nucleophilic γ-attack of the CF₃-π-allyl-Pd-intermediate is the key to furnish (Z)-CF₃-vinylnaphthols (3) in good yields. Furthermore, we achieved a one-pot synthesis of CF₃-naphtho[2,1-b]furans (4) through an uninterrupted ortho-vinylation/oxidative radical cyclization reaction sequence.

Last Decade of Unconventional Methodologies for the Synthesis of Substituted Benzofurans

This review describes the progress of the last decade on the synthesis of substituted benzofurans, which are useful scaffolds for the synthesis of numerous natural products and pharmaceuticals. Tandem Anionic oxy-Cope Rearrangement/Oxygenation Reactions as a Versatile Method for Approaching Diverse Scaffolds

Tandem anionic oxy-Cope rearrangement/radical oxygenation reactions provide δ,ϵ-unsaturated α-(aminoxy) carbonyl compounds, which serve as convenient precursors to diverse compound classes. Functionalized carbocycles are accessible by very rare all-carbon 5-endo-trig cyclizations, but also common 5-exo-trig radical cyclizations, based on the persistent radical effect. The tandem reactions can be further extended by highly diastereoselective allylation or reduction steps to give complex scaffolds.

Diphenyl-Diselenide-Mediated Domino Claisen-Type Rearrangement/Cyclization of Propargylic Aryl Ethers: Synthesis of Naphthofuran-2-carboxaldehyde Derivatives

A diphenyl-diselenide-mediated Claisen-type rearrangement/cyclization of propargylic aryl ethers under metal-free conditions is developed, affording various naphthofuran-2-carboxaldehydes in moderate to excellent yield. The broad substrate scope and excellent functional group compatibility suggest that it can be a straightforward and powerful method to access naphthofuran-2-carboxaldehydes in a highly regioselective manner. Moreover, this reaction can be scaled up to the gram scale.
