Abstract
The first ruthenium-catalyzed carboamination of olefins with α-carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides is reported. The utilization of an inexpensive ruthenium catalyst enables the concise synthesis of pharmaceutically important isoindolin-1-ones, which possess both a stereogenic center and β-carbonyl side chain. This method is mild, efficient, and scalable and allows for the coupling of a wide range of aryl-, heteroaryl-, alkenyl-, and alkyl-substituted sulfoxonium ylides. Moreover, the carbonyl side chain in the resulting product provides a good handle for downstream transformations. For mechanistic studies, a ruthacyle complex is obtained and proven to be the key intermediate in both catalytic and stoichiometric reactions.

Abstract
A series of chiral bifunctional organocatalysts were prepared and used for enantioselective synthesis of 3-substituted isoindolinones from 2-formylarylnitriles and malonates through aldol-cyclization rearrangement tandem reaction in excellent yields and enantioselectivites (up to 87% yield and 95% ee) without recrystallization. In this investigation, we found that chiral tertiary-amine catalysts with a urea group can afford 3-substituted isoindolinones both in higher yields (87% vs. 77%) and enantioselectivities (95% ee vs. 46% ee) than chiral bifunctional phase-transfer catalysts.

Abstract
The synthesis of N-naphthyl pyrazoles has been realized by the direct three-component reactions of enaminones, aryl hydrazine hydrochlorides and internal alkynes via Rh(III) catalysis. The synthetic reactions employing simple substrates lead to simultaneous construction of dual cyclic moieties, including a pyrazole ring and a phenyl ring, via sequential formation of two C-N and three C-C bonds.

Abstract
A multicomponent annulation that proceeds by imine directed Cp*RhIII -catalyzed N-H functionalization is disclosed. The transformation affords piperazinones displaying a range of functionality and is the first example of transition metal-catalyzed multicomponent N-H functionalization. A broad range of readily available α-amino amides, including those derived from glycine, α-substituted, and α,α-disubstituted amino acids, were effective inputs and enabled the incorporation of a variety of amino acid side chains with minimal racemization. Branched and unbranched alkyl aldehydes and various stabilized diazo compounds were also efficient reactants. The piperazinone products were further modified through efficient transformations. Mechanistic studies, including X-ray crystallographic characterization of a catalytically competent five-membered rhodacycle with imine and amide nitrogen chelation, provide support for the proposed mechanism.

Abstract
Isoindolinone structure is an important privileged scaffold found in a large variety of naturally occurring as well as synthetic, biologically and pharmaceutically active compounds. Owing to its crucial role in a number of applications, the synthetic methodologies for accessing this heterocyclic skeleton have received significant attention during the past decade. In general, the synthetic strategies can be divided into two categories: First, direct utilization of phthalimides or phthalimidines as starting materials for the synthesis of isoindolinones; and second, construction of the lactam and/or aromatic rings by different catalytic methods, including C-H activation, cross-coupling, carbonylation, condensation, addition and formal cycloaddition reactions. Especially in the last mentioned, utilization of transition metal catalysts provides access to a broad range of substituted isoindolinones. Herein, the recent advances (2010-2020) in transition metal catalyzed synthetic methodologies via formation of new C-C bonds for isoindolinones are reviewed.

Abstract
A Rh(III)-catalyzed synthesis of bicyclic [1,3,5]triazinones from a diverse array of imines coupled with ethyl (pivaloyloxy)carbamate is reported. The preparation of [5,6]- and [6,6]-bicyclic heterocycles substituted with aryl, alkyl, and alkoxy groups demonstrated a broad reaction scope. The efficiency of this approach was further enhanced with the development of a three-component variant featuring in situ imine formation. X-ray crystallographic characterization of a rhodacycle formed by imidoyl C-H activation provides support for the proposed mechanism.

Abstract
Hydrazones readily synthesized from N-aminopyrroles or N-aminoazoles and aldehydes undergo Rh(III)-catalyzed dual C-H activation and coupling with aryl- and alkyl-substituted alkynes to give pyrrolopyridazines or azolopyridazines, respectively. This transformation represents a rare example of hydrazoyl C-H activation and proceeds without heteroatom functionality to direct C-H activation. Hydrazones derived from aromatic, alkenyl, and aliphatic aldehydes were effective inputs, and tethering the alkyne to the hydrazone enabled annulations to more complex, tricyclic products.

On-resin multicomponent 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of cyclopentanone-proline enamines and sulfonylazides as an efficient tool for the synthesis of amidino depsipeptide mimics. Amino Acids 2019; 52:15-24. Abstract
Depsipeptides are biologically active peptide derivatives that possess a high therapeutic interest. The development of depsipeptide mimics characterized by a chemical diversity could lead to compounds with enhanced features and activity. In this work, an on-resin multicomponent procedure for the synthesis of amidino depsipeptide mimics is described. This approach exploits a metal-free 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of cyclopentanone-proline enamines and sulfonylazides. In this reaction, the obtained primary cycloadduct undergoes a ring opening and molecular rearrangement giving access to a linear sulfonyl amidine functionalized with both a peptide chain and a diazoalkane. The so-obtained diazo function "one pot" reacts with the carboxylic group of N-Fmoc-protected amino acids leading to amidino depsipeptide mimics possessing a C4 aliphatic chain. An important advantage of this procedure is the possibility to easily obtain amidino-functionalized derivatives that are proteolytically stable peptide bond bioisosteres. Moreover, the conformational freedom given by the alkyl chain could promote the obtainment of cyclic depsipeptide with a stabilized secondary structure as demonstrated with both in silico calculations and experimental conformational studies. Finally, labeled depsipeptide mimics can be also synthesized using a fluorescent sulfonylazide in the multicomponent reaction.

Abstract
Multicomponent Mannich reactions through C-H bond activation are described. These transformations allowed for the straightforward generation of densely substituted benzylic and homo-benzylic amines in good yields. The reaction involves a reaction between two transient species: an organometallic species, generated by transition-metal-catalyzed sp2 or sp3 C-H bond activation and an in situ generated imine. The use of an acetal as an aldehyde surrogate was found essential for the reaction to proceed. The process could be successfully applied to RhIII -catalyzed sp2 C-H bond functionalization and extended to CuII -catalyzed sp3 C-H bond functionalization.

Abstract
Imines formed in situ from 2-aminopyridines and aldehydes undergo Rh(III)-catalyzed imidoyl C-H activation and coupling with diazo esters to give pyrido[1,2- a]pyrimidin-4-ones. Aromatic and enolizable aliphatic aldehydes were both effective substrates, and a broad range of functional groups were incorporated at different sites on the heterocyclic products. In addition, methoxy and dimethylamino functionalities could be directly installed on the pyrimidine ring by employing trimethyl orthoformate or N, N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal in place of the aldehyde, respectively.
