Air-Stable N, N'-Dihydroporphycene: A Quinoxaline-Fused Tetrapyrrolic Macrocycle That Detects Fluoride Anion via Deprotonation

Template Assisted Formation of 32 and 34π Octaphyrins Embedded with Dithienopyrrole Cores: A New Scaffold to Unravel Proton Coupled Redox Switching and (Anti)Aromaticity

Herein, we report two distinct octaphyrins obtained by the condensation of new dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole based tetrapyrrane under two different acidic conditions. Fourfold meso-substituted octaphyrin was the major product when the reaction was performed in the presence of an aryl aldehyde using trifluoroacetic acid. Whereas, the sixfold meso-substituted octaphyrin was obtained when the precursor was condensed with pentafluorobenzaldehyde using para-toluenesulfonic acid. Such a template effect of aryl aldehydes in oxidative coupling reactions is realized for the first time in literature. Experimental and theoretical studies suggested that the oxidized form of fourfold meso-substituted octaphyrin is 32π antiaromatic and undergoes proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) to the protonated form of 34π aromatic congener upon treatment with protic acids. Furthermore, small organic molecules such as alcohols and amines were also found to promote chemical reduction. Single crystal X-ray structure revealed that the aromatic counterpart is highly planar and stabilized by several intermolecular H-bonding and F-F interactions, leading to a large 3D supramolecular arrangement and exhibited colorimetric sensing for fluoride and hydroxide anions. On the other hand, sixfold meso-substituted octaphyrin did not show (anti)aromatic features, PCET or anion sensing, but its intriguing absorption features associated with protonation could make it an ideal candidate for pH-dependent bioimaging.

Stable Inner 2H Tautomer of N-Confused-like Porphyrin Embedded with a Carbazole Subunit: Synthesis, Metal Coordination, and Magnetic and Anion Sensing Studies

A new class of N-confused porphyrin 1 embedded with a carbazole subunit was prepared via [3 + 1] acid-catalyzed condensation of appropriate precursors. 1 underwent smooth metal complexation with Pd(II) and Cu(II) salts to provide the corresponding diamagnetic 1-Pd and paramagnetic 1-Cu, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structure of 1-Pd is evident with a square-planar Pd-center through C-H activation of inverted pyrrole. Superconducting quantum interference device analysis combined with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results provided insights into the paramagnetic nature of 1-Cu. Further, a ratiometric enhancement of near-IR fluorescence at 746 nm was found to be reversible upon adding CN- and F- ions. The solid-state structure of 1-Pd confirms that the anionic species is due to NH deprotonation.

Quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0). A rudimentary chemosensor

A quinoxaline-fused octaphyrin(2.0.0.0.2.0.0.0) was synthesized by the FeCl₃-induced oxidative coupling of an α-free quinoxaline-fused tetrapyrrole. This macrocycle adopts a figure-of-eight conformation in the solid state and acts as a rudimentary chemosensor in solution. The Lewis basic anions fluoride and hydroxide induce a colour change via a deprotonation mechanism.

Polyoxa- and Polyazamacrocycles Incorporating 6,7-Diaminoquinoxaline Moiety: Synthesis and Application as Tunable Optical pH-Indicators in Aqueous Solution

Synthetic approach to fluorescent polyaza- and polyoxadiazamacrocycles comprising a structural fragment of 6,7-diamino-2,3-diphenylquinoxaline has been elaborated using Pd-catalyzed amination providing target compounds in yields up to 77%. A series of nine novel N- and N,O-containing macrocyclic ligands differing by the number of donor sites and cavity size has been obtained. These compounds possess well-pronounced fluorescent properties with emission maxima in a blue region in aprotic solvents and high quantum yields of fluorescence, while in proton media, fluorescence shifts towards the green region of the spectrum. Using macrocycles 5c and 5e as examples, we have shown that such compounds can serve as dual-channel (colorimetric and fluorimetric) pH indicators in water media, with pH transition point and response being dependent on the macrocycle structure due to different sequences of protonation steps.

Imidazopyridine-based carboxamide exhibiting the aggregation-induced emission phenomenon works effectively in fluoride ion detection through H-bond interaction and subsequent deprotonation.

A simple colorimetric and ratiometric fluoride ion probe with large color change

Two colorimetric and ratiometric fluoride ion probes SHJ-1 and SHJ-2 based on the acylhydrazone skeleton have been developed. Among the eight anions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, ClO4 -, H2PO4 -, HSO4 -, CH3COO-), the present probes showed high selectivity and sensitivity toward fluoride ion detection with obvious color change. Notably, the probe SHJ-1 exhibited a red shift of 145 nm upon fluoride sensing, which is the largest value among fluoride ion probes based on acylhydrazone derivates to date. 1HNMR titration study and theoretical calculations suggested that the strong binding of the probe SHJ-1 to fluoride as well as the further deprotonation may facilitate the intramolecular charge transfer transition. These two probes are 1 : 1 complexed with fluoride ions, and the detection limits were calculated to be 1.24 μM for SHJ-1 and 15.73 μM for SHJ-2.

Dual Naked-Eye Optical Sensor Based on Imidazolium Cation and Napthalamide for Specific Detection of Fluoride

A novel naked eye fluorescence sensor (ANI) based on naphthalimide and imidazolium moieties for fluoride detection has been designed and synthesized by multiple step synthesis. The fluorescence response of ANI sensor was significantly quenched in the presence of fluoride ion upon the interaction between an acidic amide proton and acidic C2 proton (-C(2)H-) of imidazolium compound. The binding behavior of ANI and F^- ion was extensively explored by using NMR titration. Comparison of binding ability of ANI and AN sensors addressed the dominant electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interaction with F^- ion. Consequently, ANI sensor highlights a strong binding with F^- ions with a high selectivity over AN. Interestingly, ANI demonstrated a naked-eye response with colorimetric and fluorometric assay.

Small triiminopyrrolic molecular cage with high affinity and selectivity for fluoride

A small molecular cage (4) with high affinity and complete selectivity for fluoride to the limit of detection over other competing small anions was synthesized. Cage 4 was also found to retain the encapsulated fluoride anion within its cavity even after one or two pyrrolic NH protons were subject to deprotonation.
