Abstract
In this mini-review, we present our concepts for designing multicomponent reactions with reference to a series of sequential radical reactions that we have developed. Radical reactions are well suited for the design of multicomponent reactions due to their high functional group tolerance and low solvent sensitivity. We have focused on the photolysis of interelement compounds with a heteroatom-heteroatom single bond, which readily generates heteroatom-centered radicals, and have studied the photoinduced radical addition of interelement compounds to unsaturated compounds. First, the background of multicomponent radical reactions is described, and basic concepts and methodology for the construction of multicomponent reactions are explained. Next, examples of multicomponent reactions involving two interelement compounds and one unsaturated compound are presented, as well as examples of multicomponent reactions involving one interelement compound and two unsaturated compounds. Furthermore, multicomponent reactions involving intramolecular cyclization processes are described.

Abstract
β-(Hetero)arylethylamines are privileged structural motifs found in many high-value organic molecules, including pharmaceuticals and natural products. To construct these important molecular skeletons, previous methods are mainly achieved by amino(hetero)arylation reaction with the aid of transition metals and preactivated substrates. Herein, we report a metal-free and photoinduced intermolecular amino(hetero)arylation reaction for the single-step installation of both (hetero)aryl and iminyl groups across alkenes in an efficient and regioselective manner. This method shows broad scope (up to 124 examples) and excellent tolerance of various olefins─from the simplest ethylene to complex multisubstituted alkenes can all participate in the reaction. Furthermore, aminosulfonylation of alkenes can be also conducted in the presence of sodium bisulfite as the SO2 source.

Abstract
β-Amino sulfones are commonly found structural motifs in biologically active compounds. Herein, we report a direct photocatalyzed amino-sulfonylation reaction of alkenes for the efficicient production of important compounds by simple hydrolysis without the need for additional oxidants and reductants. In this transformation, the sulfonamides worked as bifunctional reagents, simultaneously generating sulfonyl radicals and N-centered radicals which were added to alkene in a highly atom-economical fashion with high regioselectivity and diastereoselectivity. This approach showed high functional group tolerance and compatibility, facilitating the late-stage modification of some bioactive alkenes and sulfonamide molecules, thereby expanding the biologically relevant chemical space. Scaling up this reaction led to an efficient green synthesis of apremilast, one of the best-selling pharmceuticals, demonstrating the synthetic utility of the applied method. Moreover, mechanistic investigations suggest that an energy transfer (EnT) process was in operation.

Abstract
An organo-photocatalytic sulfonylimination of alkenes was developed by employing readily available N-sulfonyl ketimines as bifunctional reagents. This transformation, featuring prominent functional group tolerance, provides a direct and atom-economic approach for the synthesis of valuable β-amino sulfone derivatives as a single regioisomer. In addition to terminal alkenes, internal alkenes participate in this reaction with high diastereoselectivity. N-Sulfonyl ketimines with aryl or alkyl substituents were found to be compatible with this reaction condition. This method could be applied in the late-stage modifications of drugs. Additionally, a formal insertion of alkene into cyclic sulfonyl imine was observed, affording a ring expansion product.

Abstract
A combination of aryldiazonium salts and DABSO provides a unique opportunity for sulfonylative multicomponent cross-coupling reactions. Here, a copper-catalyzed three-component cross-coupling of aryldiazonium salts, DABSO with arylboronic acids to obtain medicinally relevant unsymmetrical diarylsulfones is disclosed. Interestingly, a catalyst-free approach for the synthesis of arylvinylsulfones from the corresponding vinyl boronic acid or vinyl halides is explored under basic condition. Tethered aryldiazonium salts provided the corresponding annulated alkylvinylsulfones via alkene difunctionalization under the same transition metal-free condition. Mechanistically, these multicomponent reactions proceed through a single electron pathway by the formation of arylsulfonyl radical as a key intermediate.

Abstract
Visible-light photoredox catalysis has been regarded as an extremely powerful tool in organic chemistry, bringing the spotlight back to radical processes. The versatility of photocatalyzed reactions has already been demonstrated to be effective in providing alternative routes for cross-coupling as well as multicomponent reactions. The photocatalyst allows the generation of high-energy intermediates through light irradiation rather than using highly reactive reagents or harsh reaction conditions. In a similar vein, organic electrochemistry has experienced a fruitful renaissance as a tool for generating reactive intermediates without the need for any catalyst. Such milder approaches pose the basis toward higher selectivity and broader applicability. In photocatalyzed and electrochemical multicomponent reactions, the generation of the radical species acts as a starter of the cascade of events. This allows for diverse reactivity and the use of reagents is usually not covered by classical methods. Owing to the availability of cheaper and more standardized photo- and electrochemical reactors, as well as easily scalable flow-setups, it is not surprising that these two fields have become areas of increased research interest. Keeping these in view, this review is aimed at providing an overview of the synthetic approaches in the design of MCRs involving photoredox catalysis and/or electrochemical activation as a crucial step with particular focus on the choice of the difunctionalized reagent.

Abstract
An efficient and heterogeneous novel magnetic silica-coated picolylaminecopper complex [Fe3O4@SiO2@GP/Picolylamine-Cu(II)] was synthesized, characterized, and employed as a magnetically recoverable nanocatalyst in Biginelli condensation for the preparation of biologically active 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones. Fe3O4@SiO2@GP/Picolylamine-Cu(II) was synthesized easily using chemical attachment of the picolylaminecompound on Fe3O4@SiO2@GP, followed by treatment with copper salt in ethanol under reflux conditions. Fe3O4@SiO2@GP/Picolylamine-Cu(II) was affirmed by various analyses such as Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, vibrating-sample magnetometry, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, DLS, inductively coupled plasma, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. The resulting catalyst system was successfully used in the Biginelli reaction through a variety of compounds such as aromatic aldehyde, urea, and ethyl acetoacetate under solvent-free conditions or ethylene glycol at 80 °C and yielded the desired products with high conversions with powerful reusability. The current approach was convenient and clean, and only 0.01 g of the catalyst could be used to perform the reaction. The easy work-up procedure, gram-scale synthesis, usage of nontoxic solvent, improved yield, short reaction times, and high durability of the catalyst are several remarkable advantages of the current approach. Also, the Fe3O4@SiO2@GP/Picolylamine-Cu(II) nanocatalyst could be recycled by an external magnet for eight runs with only a significant loss in the product yields.

Abstract
Ritter reaction has been recognized as an elegant strategy to construct the C−N bond. Its key feature is forming the carbocation for nucleophilic attack by nitriles. Herein, we report a complementary visible-light-induced three-component Ritter reaction of alkenes, nitriles, and α-bromo nitriles/esters, thereby providing mild and rapid access to various γ-amino nitriles/acids. Mechanistic studies indicated that traceless fluoride relay, transforming KF into imidoyl fluoride intermediate, is critical for the efficient reaction switch from atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) to the Ritter reaction. This approach to amino-alkylation of alkenes is chemoselective and operationally simple. Using light irradiation to promote amino-alkylation of alkenes Using KF to facilitate three-component Ritter reaction Access functionalized amides under mild conditions

Abstract
Popular and readily available alkenes and alkynes are good substrates for the preparation of functionalized molecules through radical and/or ionic addition reactions. Difunctionalization is a topic of current interest due to its high efficiency, substrate versatility, and operational simplicity. Presented in this article are radical addition followed by oxidation and nucleophilic addition reactions for difunctionalization of alkenes or alkynes. The difunctionalization could be accomplished through 1,2-addition (vicinal) and 1,n-addition (distal or remote) if H-atom or group-transfer is involved in the reaction process. A wide range of moieties, such as alkyl (R), perfluoroalkyl (Rf), aryl (Ar), hydroxy (OH), alkoxy (OR), acetatic (O2CR), halogenic (X), amino (NR2), azido (N3), cyano (CN), as well as sulfur- and phosphorous-containing groups can be incorporated through the difunctionalization reactions. Radicals generated from peroxides or single electron transfer (SET) agents, under photoredox or electrochemical reactions are employed for the reactions.

Abstract
Metal-free insertion of sulfur dioxide with aryl iodides and 3-azido-2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol under ultraviolet irradiation at room temperature is achieved, giving rise to 2-(arylsulfonyl)acetonitriles in moderate to good yields. Alkyl iodide is also workable under these conditions. This transformation proceeds smoothly under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope. Various functional groups are compatible including amino, ester, halo, and trifluoromethyl groups. No metal catalyst or additive is needed during the reaction process. Mechanistic studies show that under ultraviolet irradiation, an aryl radical is generated in situ from aryl iodide, which undergoes subsequent sulfonylation via the insertion of sulfur dioxide leading to arylsulfonyl radical intermediates. Then the arylsulfonyl radical reacts with 3-azido-2-methylbut-3-en-2-ol giving rise to the corresponding 2-(arylsulfonyl)acetonitrile.

Abstract
Katritzky salts are used as the alkyl radical precursors with the insertion of sulfur dioxide under photoredox catalysis. This transformation first enables direct generation of various alkylsulfonyl radicals by photoinduced single electron reduction, leading to diverse dialkyl sulfones in good to excellent yields. A radical pathway is proposed under visible-light induced conditions with the insertion of sulfur dioxide.
