Catalytic [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of sulfonium ylides derived from azoalkenes: non-carbenoid Doyle-Kirmse reaction

The Sc(III)-catalyzed [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of sulfonium ylides derived from azoalkenes has been established. Owing to the absence of a carbenoid intermediate, this protocol represents the first non-carbenoid variant of the Doyle-Kirmse reaction. Under mild conditions, a variety of tertiary thioethers have been readily prepared in good to excellent yields.

Synthesis of Azacarbolines via PhIO2-Promoted Intramolecular Oxidative Cyclization of α-Indolylhydrazones

An unprecedented synthesis of polysubstituted indole-fused pyridazines (azacarbolines) from α-indolylhydrazones under oxidative conditions using a combination of iodylbenzene (PhIO₂) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) has been developed. This transformation is conducted without the need for transition metals, harsh conditions, or an inert atmosphere.

Synthesis of Polycyclic Fused Indoline Scaffolds through a Substrate-Guided Reactivity Switch

Zn(II)-catalyzed divergent synthesis of functionalized polycyclic indolines through formal [3 + 2] and [4 + 2] cycloadditions of indoles with 1,2-diaza-1,3-dienes (DDs) is reported. The nature and type of substituents of substrates are found to act as a chemical switch to trigger two distinct reaction pathways and to obtain two different types of products upon the influence of the same catalyst. The mechanism of both [4 + 2] and [3 + 2] cycloadditions was investigated and fully rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Catalytic Asymmetric Formal [3+2] Cycloaddition of Azoalkenes with 3-Vinylindoles: Synthesis of 2,3-Dihydropyrroles

Chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed highly enantioselective formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of azoalkenes with 3-vinylindoles has been established. Under mild conditions, the projected cycloaddition proceeded smoothly, affording a variety of 2,3-dihydropyrroles in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities, and also in a diastereospecific manner. As opposed to the common 4-atom synthons in the previous literature reports, azoalkenes served as 3-atom synthons. Besides, the observed selectivity was supported by primary theoretical calculation. The unique chemistry of azoalkenes disclosed herein will empower asymmetric synthesis of nitrogen-containing ring structural motifs in a broader context.

Enantioselective Dearomatization of Indoles by an Azoalkene-Enabled (3+2) Reaction: Access to Pyrroloindolines

The enantioselective dearomatization of indoles by an organocatalytic (3+2) reaction has been established. The reaction makes use of simple indole derivatives as substrates, and employs azoalkenes reaction partners. A wide range of pyrroloindolines containing an all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center were readily prepared in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities.

Metal and Oxidant-Free Brønsted Acid-Mediated Cascade Reaction to Substituted Benzofurans

Substituted hydroxy-benzofurans are easily accessible by treatment of resorcinols and 1,2-diaza-1,3-dienes (DDs) under acidic conditions. The reaction happens through an uncommon Michael reaction between aromatic derivatives as aromatic C(sp²)-H nucleophiles and DDs as acceptors. Also, the behavior of different phenols and 2-naphthol was investigated.

A practical and effective method for the N–N bond cleavage of N-amino-heterocycles

An innovative, robust, regioselective, metal- and oxidant-free method to cleave the N–N bond of N-amino heterocycles, promoted by 1,2-diaza-1,3-dienes is here presented. The process involves a Michael type addition/E1cb elimination sequence.
