Abstract
Transition metal π-arene complexes enable the dearomatization of benzene rings to access diversified unsaturated carbocycles through multistep synthetic procedures involving sequential addition of nucleophiles and electrophiles. This work details a single-step dearomatization process by reaction of Ru(η6-arene) complexes with enolates derived from α-halo or α-(tosyloxy)esters to directly transform π-coordinated arenes to ring-expanded cycloheptatrienes.

Abstract
In contrast to the locked fluxionality of norcaradienes fused by benzene, unexplored less aromatic heterole-fused norcaradienes, creatively generated by intramolecular hydroarylation of heteroaryl alkynylcyclopropanes, reserve a balancing fluxionality that permits a dearomative [1,5]-sigmatropic carbon shift of norcaradienes akin to the reduced aromaticity of heterole. This "walk" shift was confirmed by the isolation of a cycloheptatriene species derived from ring-expansion of a dearomatized alkynylated heterole-fused norcaradiene. A following ester-directed ring-opening rearomatization of these dearomatized heterole-fused norcaradienes gives the products featuring migratory acylmethyls that are competent for helicenation with the neighboring (hetero) arenes via (formal) dehydrative alkenylation. Such balancing reactivity of heterole-fused norcaradienes will open up the opportunity for the development of controllable reactions of fused norcaradienes.

Abstract
A diverse array of fused [6-6-5] tricyclic heterocycles has been synthesized via the dimerization and dearomative cyclization of benzene derivatives under visible light irradiation. The initiation of the cascade process is likely from aryloxy radicals, engendered through proton-coupled electron transfer by the photoexcited vinylidene ortho-quinone methide (VQM) and a Brønsted base.

Abstract
The asymmetric Büchner reaction and related arene cyclopropanations represent one type of the powerful methods for enantioselective dearomatization. However, examples of asymmetric Büchner reactions via a non-diazo approach are quite scarce, and the related arene cyclopropanation based on alkynes has not been reported. Herein, we disclose an asymmetric Büchner reaction and the related arene cyclopropanation by copper-catalyzed controllable cyclization of N-propargyl ynamides via vinyl cation intermediates, leading to chiral tricycle-fused cycloheptatrienes and benzonorcaradienes in high yields and enantioselectivities. Importantly, this protocol represents an asymmetric arene cyclopropanation reaction of alkynes and an asymmetric Büchner reaction based on vinyl cations.

Abstract
A protocol induced by visible light for the direct insertion of α-carbonyl carbenes into the B-H bond of amine-borane adducts has been developed under conditions that are free of metal and photocatalyst. This approach provides a straightforward route to various organoboron compounds from diazo compounds and amine-borane adducts with moderate to good yields. Mechanistic investigations reveal that this photoinduced reaction proceeds through concerted carbene insertion into the B-H bond, and the photoinduced generation of free carbene from α-diazo esters may be the rate-determining step.

Abstract
Three-membered rings, such as epoxides, aziridines, oxaziridines, cyclopropenes, vinyloxaziridines, and azirines, are recognized as crucial pharmacophores and building blocks in organic chemistry and drug discovery. Despite the significant advances in the synthesis of these rings through photo/electrochemical methods over the past decade, there has currently been no focused discussion and updated overviews on this topic. Therefore, we presented this review article on the efficient synthesis of three-membered rings using photo- and electrochemical strategies, covering the literature since 2015. In this study, a conceptual overview and detailed discussions were provided to illustrate the advancement of this field. Moreover, a brief discussion outlines the current challenges and opportunities in synthesizing the three-membered rings using these strategies.

Abstract
A new self-cyclopropanation of 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione, leading to tetrasubstituted cyclopropane containing three contiguous stereogenic centers with high stereoselectivity, has been achieved through violet-light-emitting diode-irradiated photocatalysis, featuring both cycloaddition and a distinctive rearrangement. Diverging from conventional cyclopropanation pathways, this reaction yields a tetrasubstituted cyclopropane through unprecedented rearrangement and cascade reactions.

Abstract
The arene cyclopropanation between diazo compounds and benzene is well known to produce a tautomeric mixture of norcaradiene and cycloheptatriene in favour of the latter species. Nevertheless, previous studies have suggested that the initially formed norcaradiene can be stabilized by a C-7 cyano group with prevention of its 6π-electrocyclic ring opening. According to this feature, a synthetic route to functionalized cyclohexadienes has been designed using α-cyanodiazoacetates and α-diazo-β-ketonitriles as the starting materials, respectively. The Rh2(esp)2-catalyzed arene cyclopropanation of α-cyanodiazoacetates in benzene afforded the expected 7-alkoxycarbonyl-7-cyanonorcaradienes as isolable compounds, which then served as templates for the second cyclopropanation with ethyl diazoacetate or α-cyanodiazocarbonyls to enable the formation of bis(cyclopropanated) adducts. Their subsequent treatment with SmI2 triggered a double ring-opening process, allowing for the generation of 1,4- and/or 1,3-cyclohexadienes as either regio- or diastereomeric mixtures. On the other hand, the norcaradienes generated from phenyl- or methyl-substituted α-diazo-β-ketonitriles were found to undergo an in situ rearrangement to yield dihydrobenzofurans that could be converted to benzofuran derivatives by DDQ oxidation.

Abstract
In recent years, visible light-induced reactions of diazo compounds have attracted increasing attention in organic synthesis, leading to improvement of existing reactions, as well as to the discovery of unprecedented transformations. Thus, photochemical or photocatalytic generation of both carbenes and radicals provide milder tools toward these key intermediates for many valuable transformations. However, the vast majority of the transformations represent new reactivity modes of diazo compounds, which are achieved by the photochemical decomposition of diazo compounds and photoredox catalysis. In particular, the use of a redox-active photocatalysts opens the avenue to a plethora of radical reactions. The application of these methods to diazo compounds led to discovery of transformations inaccessible by the classical reactivity associated with carbenes and metal carbenes. In most cases, diazo compounds act as radical sources but can also serve as radical acceptors. Importantly, the described processes operate under mild, practical conditions. This Review describes this subfield of diazo compound chemistry, particularly focusing on recent advancements.

Abstract
An effective approach for the construction of 4-short-chain ether attached carbonyl group-substituted quinazolines was developed. Visible-light-induced three-component reactions of α-diazoesters, quinazolinones, and cyclic ethers, with a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, under extremely mild conditions without the need for any additional additives and catalysts, selectively led to quinazoline-based hybrids in good to excellent yields. The synthesized hybrids, which are a conglomeration of a quinazoline, a short-chain ether, and a carbonyl group in one molecular skeleton, have potential for application in the development of new drugs or drug candidates.

Abstract
Phosphanorcaradienes are an appealing class of phosphorus compounds that can serve as synthons of transient phosphinidenes. However, the synthesis of such species is a formidable task owing to their intrinsic high reactivity. Herein we report straightforward synthesis, characterization and reactivity studies of a phosphanorcaradiene, in which one of the benzene rings in the flanking fluorenyl substituents is intramolecularly dearomatized through attachment to the phosphorus atom. It is facilely obtained by the reduction of phosphorus(III) dichloride precursor with potassium graphite. Despite being thermally robust, it acts as a synthetic equivalent of a transient phosphinidene. It reacts with trimethylphosphine and isonitrile to yield phosphanylidene-phosphorane and 1-phospha-3-azaallene, respectively. When it is treated with one and two molar equivalents of azide, iminophosphane and bis(imino)phosphane are isolated, respectively. Moreover, it is capable of activating ethylene and alkyne to afford [1 + 2] cycloaddition products, as well as oxidative cleavage of Si-H and N-H bonds to yield secondary phosphines. All the reactions proceed smoothly at room temperature without the presence of transition metals. The driving force for these reactions is most likely the high ring-constraint of the three-membered PC2 ring and recovery of the aromaticity of the benzene ring.

Abstract
In recent decades, the traceless nature of visible photons has been exploited for the development of efficient synthetic strategies for the photoconversion of colourless compounds, namely, photocatalysis, chromophore activation, and the formation of an electron donor/acceptor (EDA) complex. However, the use of photoreactive coloured organic compounds is the optimal strategy to boost visible photons as ideal reagents in synthetic protocols. In view of such premises, the present review aims to provide its readership with a collection of recent photochemical strategies facilitated via direct light absorption by coloured molecules. The protocols have been classified and presented according to the nature of the intermediate/excited state achieved during the transformation.

Abstract
Cyclopropane ring is a very common motif in organic/bio-organic compounds. The chemical bonding of this strained ring is taught to all chemistry students. This three-membered cyclic, C3 ring is quite reactive which has attracted both, synthetic and theoretical chemists to rationalize/correlate its stability and bonding with its reactivity and physical properties over a century. There are a few bonding models (mainly the Bent-Bond model and Walsh model) of this C3 ring that are debated to date. Herein, we have carried out energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) to study the two most reactive bonds of cyclopropane rings of 49 different organic compounds containing different functional groups to obtain a much deeper bonding insight toward a more general bonding model of this class of compounds. The EDA-NOCV analyses of fragment orbitals and susequent bond formation revealed that the nature of the CC bond of the cyclopropane (splitting two bonds at a time out of three CC bonds) ring is preferred to form two dative covalent CC bonds (between a singlet olefin-fragment and an excited singlet carbene-fragment with a vacant sp2 orbital and a filled p-orbital) for the majority (37/49) of compounds over two covalent electron sharing bonds in some (7/49) compounds (between an excited triplet olefin and triplet carbene), while a few (5/49) compounds show flexibility to adopt either the electron sharing or dative covalent bond as both are equally possible. The effects of functional groups on the nature of chemical bond in cyclopropane rings have been studied in detail. Our bonding analyses are in line with the QTAIM analyses which produce small negative values of the Laplacian, significantly positive values of bond ellipticity, and accumulation of electron densities around the ring critical point of C3 -rings. These corresponding QTAIM parameters of C3 -rings are quite different for CC single bonds of normal hydrocarbons as expected. The chemical bonding in the majority of cyclopropane rings can be very similar to those of metal-olefin systems.

Abstract
Herein, we report a novel regioselective [2 + 1] cyclization reaction of 2-pyridones with carbenes generated in situ via visible light irradiation, without the requirement for catalysts or additives. The diverse functional groups of 2-pyridones and diazo compounds exhibit good tolerance, enabling the rapid synthesis of highly valuable cyclopropanated dihydro-2-pyridone scaffolds with exceptional regio- and stereoselectivity. Furthermore, DFT calculations provide a comprehensive explanation for the regio- and stereoselectivity observed in the reaction.

Abstract
The control of the reactivity of diazo compounds is commonly achieved by the choice of a suitable catalyst, e.g. via stabilization of singlet carbenes or radical intermediates. Herein, we report on the light-promoted reactivity of cyclic diazo imides with thiols, where the choice of solvent results in two fundamentally different reaction pathways. In dichloromethane (DCM), a carbene is formed initially and engages in a cascade C-H functionalization/thiolation reaction to deliver indane-fused pyrrolidines in good to excellent yields. When switching to acetonitrile solvent, the carbene pathway is shut down and an unusual reduction of the diazo compound occurs under otherwise identical reaction conditions, where the aryl thiol acts as reductant. A combined set of experimental and computational studies was carried out to obtain mechanistic understanding and to support that indane formation proceeds via the insertion of a triplet carbene, while the reduction of diazo imides proceeds via an electron transfer process.

Abstract
Herein we report an N-H functionalization of O-substituted hydroxamic acid with diazo esters under blue LED irradiation conditions. The present transformations could be performed efficiently under mild conditions without use of catalyst, additive and N2 atmosphere. Interestingly, when THF and 1,4-dioxane were employed as the reaction solvents, an active oxonium ylide involved three-component reaction and an N-H insertion of carbene species into hydroxamate occurred, respectively.

Abstract
Herein, the enantioselective synthesis of complex tricyclo[3.2.2.0]nonenes through the Diels-Alder reaction is reported. Utilizing racemic norcaradienes prepared from the visible-light-mediated dearomative cyclopropanation of m-xylene as dienes and enone derivatives as dienophiles, the overall process represents a kinetic asymmetric transformation in the presence of a chiral cobalt(ii) complex of chiral N,N'-dioxide. High diastereo- and enantioselectivity could be obtained in most cycloaddition processes and part racemization of norcaradiene is observed. The topographic steric maps of the catalysts were collected to rationalize the relationship between reactivity and enantioselectivity with the catalysts.

Abstract
Free carbene readily causes multiple side reactions due to its high energy, thus its asymmetric transformation is very difficult. We present here our findings of high-pKa Brønsted acid catalysts that enable free carbene insertion into N-H bonds of amines to prepare chiral α-amino acid derivatives with high enantioselectivity. Under irradiation with visible light, diazo compounds produce high-energy free carbenes that are captured by amines to form free ylide intermediates, and then the newly designed high-pKa Brønsted acids, chiral spiro phosphamides, promote the proton transfer of ylides to afford the products. Computational and kinetic studies uncover the principle for the rational design of proton-transfer catalysts and explain how the catalysts accelerate this transformation and provide stereocontrol.

Abstract
Dearomatization reactions provide rapid access to structurally complex three-dimensional molecules from simple aromatic compounds. Plenty of reports have demonstrated their utilities in the synthesis of natural products, medicinal chemistry, and materials science in the last decades. Recently, visible-light mediated photocatalysis has emerged as a powerful tool to promote many kinds of transformations. The dearomatization reactions induced by visible-light have also made significant progress during the past several years. This review provides an overview of visible-light induced dearomatization reactions classified based on the manner in which aromaticity is disrupted.

Abstract
Visible light induced singlet nucleophilic carbenes undergo rapid [2 + 1]-cycloaddition with tethered olefins to afford unique bicyclo[3.1.0]hexane and bicyclo[4.1.0]heptane scaffolds. This cyclopropanation process requires only visible light irradiation to proceed, circumventing the use of exogenous (photo)catalysts, sensitisers or additives and showcases a vastly underexplored mode of reactivity for nucleophilic carbenes in chemical synthesis. The discovery of additional transformations including a cyclopropanation/retro-Michael/Michael cascade process to afford chromanones and a photochemical C–H insertion reaction are also described. Abstract
The dearomatization of 2-naphthols represents a simple method for the construction of complex 3D structures from simple planar starting materials. We describe a cyclopropanation of 2-naphthols that proceeds via cyclopropene ring-opening using rhodium and acid catalysis under mild conditions. The vinyl cyclopropane molecules were formed with high chemoselectivity and scalability, which could be further functionalized at different sites. Both computational and experimental evidence were used to elucidate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
The alternating physical properties, especially melting points, of α,ω-disubstituted n-alkanes and their parent n-alkanes had been known since Baeyer's report in 1877. There is, however, no general and comprehensive explanation for such a phenomenon. Herein, we report the synthesis and examination of a series of novel ω-phenyl n-alkyl tropylium tetrafluoroborates, which also display alternation in their physicochemical characters. Despite being organic salts, the compounds with odd numbers of carbons in the alkyl bridge exist as room temperature ionic liquids. In stark contrast to this, the analogues with even numbers of carbons in the linker are crystalline solids. These solid nonconjugated molecules exhibit curious photoluminescent properties, which can be attributed to their ability to form through-space charge-transfer complexes to cause crystallization-induced emission enhancement. Most notably, the compound with the highest photoluminescent quantum yield in this series showed an unusual arrangement of carbocationic dimer in the solid state. A combination of XRD analysis and ab initio calculations revealed interesting insights into these systems.

Abstract
Pd-catalyzed allylative dearomatisation of naphthyl halides is shown to be feasible by employing Grignard reagents. The high reactivity of the nucleophile allows for fast reactions and low catalyst loading, while a plethora of successfully substituted compounds illustrate the broad scope. Five membered heteroaromatic compounds are also demonstrated to be reactive under similar conditions.

Abstract
A green and sustainable oxime ether formation method via the visible-light-promoted O-H functionalization of oximes with diazo esters is described. The reaction occurs under very mild conditions (catalyst- and additive-free) with a high yield and a high functional group tolerance. When the reaction was performed with a cyclic ether as the solvent (e.g., THF, 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydropyran, ect.), an interesting photochemical three-component reaction product was obtained in good yields.

Abstract
Herein we report the discovery of a new photochemical cascade process through a flow-based strategy for intercepting diradicals generated from simple alkenes. This continuous process delivers a series of unprecedented polycyclic reaction products. Exploring the scope of this novel process revealed that this approach is general and affords a variety of structurally complex reaction products in high yields (up to 81%), short reaction times (7 min) and high throughputs (up to 5.5 mmol h-1). A mechanistic rationale is presented that is supported by computations as well as isolation of key intermediates whose identity is confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The presented photochemical cascade process demonstrates the discovery of new chemical reactivity and complex chemical scaffolds by continuously generating and intercepting high-energy intermediates in a highly practical manner.

Abstract
We develop a visible light-promoted divergent cycloaddition of α-diazo esters with hexahydro-1,3,5-triazines, leading to a series of aziridine and imidazolidine frameworks in average good yield, by simply changing the reaction media used. It is noteworthy that the reaction occurs under sole visible light irradiation without the need for exogenous photoredox catalysts. More significantly, a reasonable reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of the control experiments and density functional theory calculation results.

Abstract
The cyclopropanation reaction of 3-diazooxindoles with arenes was first accomplished using visible-light irradiation. A series of spiro[norcaradiene-7,3'-indolin]-2'-ones were synthesized for the first time in high yields and with excellent diastereoselectivities. The synthetic usefulness of this catalyst-free photochemical methodology is illustrated by the further controllable rearrangement and epoxidation reactions.
