Abstract
Improper disposal of traditional plastics leads to the generation of microplastics, resulting in severe pollution of land and oceans and posing a threat to human health and marine ecosystems. Hence, adopting eco-friendly bioplastics, particularly in food packaging, is essential. In this study, Enset starch-based biocomposite films, reinforced with Ethiopian bentonite clay at various ratios (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 % w/w) were prepared using solvent casting method. The effect of bentonite clay on biocomposite films on structural, physicochemical, and morphological properties were analyzed. Characterization tests confirmed the even distribution of bentonite, strengthening of bonds, and enhancement of the biocomposite film properties. The biocomposite film with 5 wt% bentonite clay incorporation into enset starch exhibits optimal performance; maximum strength (increased by 132 %), less water solubility (reduction in 33 %), reduction in water vapor permeability (decreased by 42 %), and better compatibility in the morphologies attributed by the intercalated silicate layer. This study highlights the effectiveness of bentonite clay in enhancing enset starch biocomposite properties, offering a promising eco-friendly solution for biodegradable food packaging and promoting sustainable resource utilization.

Abstract
Exploration of robust antiseptics with antibiofilm performance and long-term antimicrobial activity is of great significance to effectively destroy foodborne pathogenic bacteria. Herein, a silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) /carbon dots (CDs) nanocomposite (Ag@CDs) was constructed by the reaction of Ag+ with CDs, which has strong antibacterial ability, and mighty biofilm inhibition and destruction ability toward E. coli and S. aureus. Notably, low concentration of Ag@CDs (40.0 and 80.0 μg/mL) could ablate 86.11 % E. coli and 75.86 % S. aureus biomass of mature biofilm. To our knowledge, this is the first bactericide with powerful biofilm destruction activity. In addition, Ag@CDs exhibited long-term (30 d) antibacterial effect on the substrates of plastic, cotton, gauze, and glass. Ag@CDs was evenly dispersed into the matrix of chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to fabricate well-blended food packaging films. Among which, the 3 % Ag-CP film exhibited improved mechanical performance, excellent UV-Vis light blocking ability, and intensive antimicrobial activity. Despite seven days of storage, 3 % Ag-CP still could preserve the freshness and safety of the pork and shrimp, certifying it extends the storage life of packaged foods.

Abstract
The over usage plastics have possessed serious threat to the ecological system. Thus progressive advancement in fabricating biodegradable and renewable bioplastics is persuasively required to furnish an effective alternative to non-biodegradable plastics. In this view, the current work highlights the production of starch based bioplastic films using waste Colocasia esculenta (taro herb) as a viable starting precursor. The functional ability of developed taro starch based film was further modified by incorporating carbon dots (CQDs) fillers generated from the waste slurry produced during starch extraction from taro herbs. The optimization of films production was achieved by varying the CQDs amount (0.4 %, 0.8 %, 2 % and 4 % w/w) on taro-based films using casting technology. The data illustrates that the addition of CQDs has the ability to enhance the fluorescence property, mechanical properties (Tensile Strength 0.332-4.635 MPa, Elongation at break 42.45-547.63 %) and water resistance ability of films (Moisture content 15-6.4 %, Water Solubility 50-30 % Water Vapour Transmission Rate 2.0012-1.0054 g-2 h-1 and Water Contact Angle 40.6-89.6°). The developed films are found to be thermally stable. The formed films possessed anti-oxidative abilities which safeguard the film from oxidative attacks and ultimately protect the film from the external environment. The fluorescence nanosensor probe has further been developed by utilizing CQDs embedded in a starch-based bioplastic nanocomposite. The developed sensor displayed selective sensing ability towards Fe2+ ion with high sensitivity and accuracy in aqueous medium. Thus, the proposed sensor in this work offers a portable, efficient, low-cost, disposable, non-lethal, and eco-friendly nanosensor for on-site monitoring of metal ion for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. This is one of the primary reports where metal ions sensing is reported for Taro@CQDs nanocomposites based films. Our outcomes of this work hold significant relevance to providing a smart sensory and biodegradable probe for metal ion sensing by using waste resources, thus offering a better and sustainable alternative for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract
World hunger is getting worse, while one-third of food produced around the globe is wasted and never consumed. It is vital to reduce food waste to promote the sustainability of food systems, and improved food packaging solutions can augment this effort. The utilization of biomaterials in smart food packaging not only enhances food preservation and safety but also aligns with current demands for eco-friendly technologies to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the developments in the field of food packaging based on the innovative use of biomaterials. It emphasizes the potential use of biomaterials derived from nature including cellulose, chitosan, keratin, etc. for this purpose. Various smart food packaging technologies such as active and intelligent packaging are discussed in detail including scavenging additives, colour-changing environment indicators, sensors, RFID tags, etc. The article also delves into the utilization of edible films and coatings, nanoparticle fillers and 2D materials in food packaging systems. Furthermore, it outlines the challenges and opportunities in this dynamic domain, emphasizing the ongoing need for research and innovation to shape the future of sustainable and smart food packaging solutions to enhance and monitor the shelf-life of food products.

Abstract
Approximately one-third of the world's food production, i.e., 1.43 billion tons, is wasted annually, resulting in economic losses of nearly USD 940 billion and undermining food system sustainability. This waste depletes resources, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, and negatively affects food security and prices. Although traditional packaging preserves food quality, it cannot satisfy the demands of extended shelf life, safety, and sustainability. Consequently, active packaging using biopolymer matrices containing antioxidants and antimicrobials is a promising solution. This review examines the current advancements in the integration of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into biopolymer-based active packaging, focusing on their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. CQDs provide unique advantages over traditional nanoparticles and natural compounds, including high biocompatibility, tunable surface functionality, and environmental sustainability. This review explores the mechanisms through which CQDs impart antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, their synthesis methods, and their functionalization to optimize the efficacy of biopolymer matrices. Recent studies have highlighted that CQD-enhanced biopolymers maintain biodegradability with enhanced antioxidant and antimicrobial functions. Additionally, potential challenges, such as toxicity, regulatory considerations, and scalability are discussed, offering insights into future research directions and industrial applications. This review demonstrates the potential of CQD-incorporated biopolymer matrices to transform active packaging, aligning with sustainability goals and advancing food preservation technologies.

Abstract
Citrus peel waste carbon dots based on nitrogen-doped (N-TanCD) were developed by a hydrothermal strategy to deliver active packaging fillers and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence, and Fourier transform infrared analyses. The addition of N-TanCD into chitosan-pululan (CS/Pul@N-TanCD) polymer blend amplified the tensile strength of the composite film by 22.8 %, whereas the antioxidant activities against DPPH and ABTS reached 62.7 % and 91.6 %, respectively. The proposed film showed blocked 98.8 % of UV-A and 100 % of UV-B without affecting the film's transparency. The CS/Pul@N-TanCD film lowered the contamination of L. monocytogenes and E. coli by more than 4 and 5 log CFU/mL, respectively. Sliced bread was packaged using CS/Pul-based films and stored for 12 days at 50 % relative humidity and 25 °C to investigate changes in the quality of the bread. It was found that bread packaged with CS/Pul film integrated with N-TanCD maintained excellent bread quality relating to appearance, moisture content, hardness, weight loss, and total viable bacterial count.

Abstract
Ti-metal organic framework (Ti-MOF) doped with carbon dots (CDs) with enhanced antibacterial potential was synthesized using solvothermal-assisted mechanical stirring and used for the fabrication of CMC/Agar-based active packaging films. The incorporation of CD@Ti-MOF not only improved the tensile strength of the CMC/Agar film by 17.4% but also exhibited strong antioxidant activity with 100% of ABTS and 57.8% of DPPH radical scavenging using 0.64 cm2/mL of CMC/Agar/CD@Ti-MOF film. Furthermore, water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, and ultraviolet light-blocking ability (95.7% of UV-B and 84.7% of UV-A) were improved significantly. The CMC/Agar/CD@Ti-MOF film showed strong antibacterial activity and could inhibit the progress of E. coli up to 8.2 Log CFU/mL and completely stopped the growth of L.monocytogenes after 12 h of incubation. Additionally, CMC/Agar/CD@Ti-MOF film extended the shelf life of cherry tomatoes preserved at 4 °C and delayed the quality degradation, maintaining the visual aspects of the packaging.

Abstract
In this study, multifunctional green carbon dots (CDs) have been synthesized using Galla chinensis waste (GCW) via hydrothermal method for the first time. An active packaging film has been developed in this work by combining CDs and pullulan (PL), using the solution-casting method. The microscopic morphology revealed that the CDs that were prepared using GCW exhibited good compatibility with PL. In addition, it also led to improvement in the toughness of the PL film (14.01 % to 20.26 %), along with its water vapor permeability value [1.31 to 0.53 (g·mm)/(kPa·h·m2)]. The composite films consisting of CDs exhibited good UV blocking rates for the UVA (90.41 %-7.87 %), UVB (87.76 %-0.08 %), and UVC (83.39 %-0 %) spectral ranges. The composite films exhibited strong antioxidant activity, and the clearance of ABTS and DPPH were obtained to be 93.61 % and 86.30 %, respectively. In addition, the composite films showed good antibacterial activity for E. coli and S. aureus, with a high antibacterial rate of up to 99.99 %. Finally, the non-contact preservation of strawberries over a duration of 10 d at room temperature confirmed that the prepared composite film can help preserve the quality of strawberries, as well as extended their shelf-life.

Abstract
During the last decades, the ever-increasing incidence of diseases has led to high rates of mortality throughout the world. On the other hand, the inability and deficiencies of conventional approaches (such as chemotherapy) in the suppression of diseases remain challenging issues. As a result, there is a fundamental requirement to develop novel, biocompatible, bioavailable, and practical nanomaterials to prevent the incidence and mortality of diseases. Chitosan (CS) derivatives and their blends are outstandingly employed as promising drug delivery systems for disease therapy. These biopolymers are indicated more efficient performance against diseases compared with conventional modalities. The CS blends possess improved physicochemical properties, ease of preparation, high affordability, etc. characteristics compared with other biopolymers and even pure CS which result in efficient thermal, mechanical, biochemical, and biomedical features. Also, these blends can be administrated through different routes without a long-term treatment period. Due to the mentioned properties, numerous formulations of CS blends are developed for pharmaceutical sciences to treat diseases. This review article highlights the progressions in the development of CS-based blends as potential drug delivery systems against diseases.

Abstract
The corruption of refrigerated marine fish results in global economic losses exceeding 25 billion euros annually. However, conventional preservatives present challenges, including singular functionality, potential toxicity, and high cost. In response, we developed multifunctional, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly carbon dots derived from radish residues (R-CDs) by using the one-pot hydrothermal method. The surface of R-CDs is enriched with hydroxyl groups, conferring broad-spectrum antioxidant and antibacterial characteristics. R-CDs exhibited a notable 72.92 % inhibition rate on lipid peroxidation, surpassing the effectiveness of vitamin C (46 %). Additionally, R-CDs demonstrated impressive scavenging rates of 93.8 % for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radicals and 99.36 % for 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid-free radicals. In combating spoilage bacteria such as Aeromonas sobria and Hafnia alvei, R-CDs disrupted cell structures and influenced intracellular substance content. Importantly, co-cultivation with R-CDs showed no significant cytotoxicity. Further incorporating R-CDs into films using starch and chitosan (S/CS/R-CDs films) for efficient and convenient use in salmon fillets preservation. S/CS/R-CDs films effectively inhibited the growth of spoilage bacteria, lipid oxidation, and protein decomposition in salmon fillets, thereby extending shelf life by 4 days. This combination of antioxidant and antibacterial properties in R-CDs, along with the functional films, presents a promising approach for enhancing salmon fillet preservation.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) were derived using eggplant peel by a hydrothermal approach and incorporated into the carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and gelatin (Gel) blend to develop sustainable and functional packaging films for fruit preservation. The CD was uniformly dispersed within the CMC/Gel blend to form a dense and continuous film and fashioned a strong interaction with the polymer chain, increasing the tensile strength of the film by 5.0-16.0 %. Also, with the impregnation of CDs, the UV-blocking potential of the CMC/Gel film was greatly improved to the extent of blocking 94.3 % of UV-B and 72.5 % of UV-A, while the water vapor permeability slightly decreased (by 2.7-5.4 %), and the water contact angle of the film marginally expand (by 6.2-19.1 %). The CMC/Gel film with 3 wt% of CD added depicted strong antioxidant efficacy of 100 % against ABTS and 59.1 % against DPPH and displayed strong antibacterial action that inhibited the progress of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli by 99.8 %. In addition, when table grapes were packaged using a CMC/Gel composite film containing CD and stored at 4 °C for 24 days, the fruits packed with the composite film maintained excellent external quality and extended the shelf life.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) derived from sustainable natural feed-stocks like lignin have gained wide acceptance by virtue of their renewability and promising potential in intelligent sensing applications. The precursor lignin is isolated from agro-biomass waste, coconut husk through sodium hydroxide based extraction process. CDs are synthesised from amine functionalized lignin through solvothermal process and integrated into carrageenan biopolymer matrix (1, 2 and 3 wt%). The composite film with 2 wt% CDs (CARR2CD) showed optimum fluorescent emission intensity, excellent pH dependent fluorescent color change in the food pH range, reasonable tensile strength (46.50 ± 1.32 MPa) and 27 % increase in elongation at break. CDs imparted UV-light blocking properties (70 % UV-light) and enhanced hydrophobicity of the carrageenan matrix. CARR2CD film showed 84 % visible light transparency, 79 % reduction in oxygen transmittance rate (OTR), 81 % reduction in CO2 gas permeability and excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties (against E. coli and S. aureus). As a practical application, the developed responsive packaging material is used to track pH change associated with milk spoilage via noticeable color change in fluorescent emission of the composite film. Thus, the developed responsive composite film paves a way for use as green and sustainable transparent intelligent food packaging material.

Abstract
This study emphasizes the potential of biomass-derived nanoparticles such as nanocellulose (NC), nanohemicellulose (NHC), and nanolignin (NL) as reinforcements in chitosan (C) films to produce a higher barrier active packaging film. The incorporation of NC, NHC, and NL (1.5%) significantly improves the mechanical, water, and UV barrier properties of the chitosan film (P < 0.0001). Additionally, NHC and NL reinforcement significantly enhance antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. The physicochemical, sensory, and microbiological properties of fresh meat packed in chitosan films with 1.5% nanoparticles, as well as a commercial LDPE film, were assessed when stored at 4 °C for up to 18 days. C-NHC and C-NL packaging films preserved the quality of meat until the 18th day, whereas the meat packed in the LDPE film spoiled entirely on the sixth day. In conclusion, chitosan films with biomass-derived nanoparticles could be an excellent packaging material for highly perishable food, such as fresh meat, with an extended shelf life. Abstract
Active packaging is an innovative approach to prolonge the shelf-life of food products while ensuring their quality and safety. Carbon dots (CDs) from biomass as active fillers for biopolymer films have been introduced to improve their bioactivities as well as properties. Gelatin/chitosan (G/C) blend films containing active guava leaf powder carbon dots (GL-CDs) at various levels (0-3%, w/w) were prepared by the solvent casting method and characterized. Thickness of the control increased from 0.033 to 0.041 mm when 3% GL-CDs were added (G/C-CD-3%). Young's modulus of the resulting films increased (485.67-759.00 MPa), whereas the tensile strength (26.92-17.77 MPa) and elongation at break decreased (14.89-5.48%) as the GL-CDs' level upsurged (p < 0.05). Water vapor barrier property and water contact angle of the film were enhanced when incorporated with GL-CDs (p < 0.05). GL-CDs had a negligible impact on film microstructure, while GL-CDs interacted with gelatin or chitosan, as determined by FTIR. The release of GL-CDs from blend films was more pronounced in water than in alcoholic solutions (10-95% ethanol). The addition of GL-CDs improved the UV light barrier properties and antioxidant activities of the resultant films in a dose-dependent manner. Thus, GL-CD-added gelatin/chitosan blend films with antioxidant activities could be employed as potential active packaging for the food industry.

Abstract
Recently, as concerns about petrochemical-derived polymers increase, interest in biopolymer-based materials is increasing. Undoubtedly, biopolymers are a better alternative to solve the problem of synthetic polymer-based plastics for packaging purposes. There are various types of biopolymers in nature, and mostly polysaccharides are used in this regard. Carrageenan is a hydrophilic polysaccharide extracted from red algae and has recently attracted great interest in the development of food packaging films. Carrageenan is known for its excellent film-forming properties, high compatibility and good carrier properties. Carrageenan is readily available and low cost, making it a good candidate as a polymer matrix base material for active and intelligent food packaging films. The carrageenan-based packaging film lacks mechanical, barrier, and functional properties. Thus, the physical and functional properties of carrageenan-based films can be enhanced by blending this biopolymer with functional compounds and nanofillers. Various types of bioactive ingredients, such as nanoparticles, natural extracts, colorants, and essential oils, have been incorporated into the carrageenan-based film. Carrageenan-based functional packaging film was found to be useful for extending the shelf life of packaged foods and tracking spoilage. Recently, there has been plenty of research work published on the potential of carrageenan-based packaging film. Therefore, this review discusses recent advances in carrageenan-based films for applications in food packaging. The preparation and properties of carrageenan-based packaging films were discussed, as well as their application in real-time food packaging. The latest discussion on the potential of carrageenan as an alternative to traditionally used synthetic plastics may be helpful for further research in this field.

Abstract
Carrageenan-based active/intelligent packaging films containing anthocyanin and ZnO-doped CD (Zn-CD) from purple Kohlrabi peels were prepared for freshness monitoring and shelf-life extension of shrimp, and the influence of additives on the films' physical, functional, and structural properties was investigated. The films showed excellent UV blocking ability (85.2% of UV-A and 99.4% of UV-B) and high antioxidant effect (∼99% for ABTS and ∼ 58.6% for DPPH radical scavenging activity) and showed strong antibacterial activity to stop the growth (100%) of L. monocytogenes and to reduce the growth of E. coli by 8.1 log CFU/mL after 12 h of incubation. In shrimp packaging experiments, the films were evident in the freshness monitoring, reduced spoilage, and increased shelf life. This study suggests that next-generation biopolymer films impregnated with biomass-derived CDs and natural colorants will provide broad directions for ensuring safety and extending shelf life to meet the accelerating demand for packaging products.
