Influence of Additives on the In Situ Crystallization Dynamics of Methyl Ammonium Lead Halide Perovskites

Reaction Dynamics of C(NH2)3SnI3 Formation from Vacuum-Deposited C(NH2)3I and SnI2 Bilayer Thin Films Investigated by In Situ Infrared Multiple-Angle Incidence-Resolved Spectroscopy

Understanding the formation process of organic-inorganic halide perovskite (OIHP) thin films is important for the fabrication of high-quality thin films, which, in turn, are crucial for achieving high-performance devices. To address this challenge, we developed an in situ system of infrared multiple-angle incidence-resolved spectroscopy (IR-MAIRS) combined with a vacuum deposition system. "Orientation-free" isotropic spectra constructed from IR-MAIRS spectra enable us to perform quantitative analysis of the formation process of C(NH2)3SnI3 (GASnI3) thin films from unreacted C(NH2)3I (guanidine hydroiodide (GAI))/SnI2 bilayer structures predeposited in a vacuum. The analysis of the dependence of the GASnI3 formation rate on the reaction temperature using the Avrami model has revealed that a diffusion-controlled reaction process of GAI and SnI2 governs the formation kinetics. The present study points to the usefulness of in situ IR-MAIRS analysis in understanding the growth mechanisms of vacuum-deposited OIHP thin films and hence the potential to accelerate the development of vacuum processes for the fabrication of high-quality OIHP thin films.

In situ spin coater for multimodal grazing incidence x-ray scattering studies

We present herein a custom-made, in situ, multimodal spin coater system with an integrated heating stage that can be programmed with spinning and heating recipes and that is coupled with synchrotron-based, grazing-incidence wide- and small-angle x-ray scattering. The spin coating system features an adaptable experimental chamber, with the ability to house multiple ancillary probes such as photoluminescence and visible optical cameras, to allow for true multimodal characterization and correlated data analysis. This system enables monitoring of structural evolutions such as perovskite crystallization and polymer self-assembly across a broad length scale (2 Å-150 nm) with millisecond temporal resolution throughout a complete thin film fabrication process. The use of this spin coating system allows scientists to gain a deeper understanding of temporal processes of a material system, to develop ideal conditions for thin film manufacturing.

What Can Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GD-OES) Technique Tell Us about Perovskite Solar Cells?

The emerging broad range of applications of the glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES) technique in the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) research is reviewed. It can provide a large palette of information by easily and quickly tracking the depth distribution of light to heavy elements. After a discussion of the advantages and the limitations of the technique and a comparison with other analytical techniques, how GD-OES is employed to give structural information on perovskite solar cells is shown. GD-OES has allowed the full perovskite film formation process investigation, from the initial precursor layers containing soaking and complexed solvent to the final crystallized 3D perovskite layers. The A-site elemental cations distribution is followed-up during the film formation. In addition, this technique gives a deep insight into the action mechanism of additives and their effects on the film formation. It provides fruitful information on optimized light absorbing layers and on the selective contact layers which ensure the charge transport in PSCs. It allows to directly visualize halide ions migration and their blocking by ad-hoc chemical engineering and to study the films and PSCs ageing. GD-OES opens new perspectives to explain the final performances of the devices.

Simultaneous Optimization of Charge Transport Properties in a Triple-Cation Perovskite Layer and Triple-Cation Perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD Interface by Dual Passivation

Molecular engineering of additives is a highly effective method to increase the efficiency of perovskite solar cells by reducing trap states and charge carrier barriers in bulk and on the thin film surface. In particular, the elimination of undercoordinated lead species that act as the nonradiative charge recombination center or contain defects that may limit interfacial charge transfer is critical for producing a highly efficient triple-cation perovskite solar cell. Here, 2-iodoacetamide (2I-Ac), 2-bromoacetamide (2Br-Ac), and 2-chloroacetamide (2Cl-Ac) molecules, which can be coordinated with lead, have been used by adding them into a chlorobenzene antisolvent to eliminate the defects encountered in the triple-cation perovskite thin film. The passivation process has been carried out with the coordination between the oxygen anion (-) and the lead (+2) cation on the enolate molecule, which is in the resonance structure of the molecules. The Spiro-OMeTAD/triple-cation perovskite interface has been improved by surface passivation by releasing HX (X = I, Br) as a byproduct because of the separation of alpha hydrogen on the molecule. As a result, a solar cell with a negligible hysteresis operating at 19.5% efficiency has been produced by using the 2Br-Ac molecule, compared to the 17.6% efficiency of the reference cell.

A Systematic Review of Metal Halide Perovskite Crystallization and Film Formation Mechanism Unveiled by In Situ GIWAXS

Metal halide perovskites are of fundamental interest in the research of modern thin-film optoelectronic devices, owing to their widely tunable optoelectronic properties and solution processability. To obtain high-quality perovskite films and ultimately high-performance perovskite devices, it is crucial to understand the film formation mechanisms, which, however, remains a great challenge, due to the complexity of perovskite composition, dimensionality, and processing conditions. Nevertheless, the state-of-the-art in situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) technique enables one to bridge the complex information with device performance by revealing the crystallization pathways during the perovskite film formation process. In this review, the authors illustrate how to obtain and understand in situ GIWAXS data, summarize and assess recent results of in situ GIWAXS studies on versatile perovskite photovoltaic systems, aiming at elucidating the distinct features and common ground of film formation mechanisms, and shedding light on future opportunities of employing in situ GIWAXS to study the fundamental working mechanisms of highly efficient and stable perovskite solar cells toward mass production.

Past, present and future-sample environments for materials research studies in scattering and spectroscopy; a UK perspective

Small angle x-ray scattering and x-ray absorption fine structure are two techniques that have been employed at synchrotron sources ever since their inception. Over the course of the development of the techniques, the introduction of sample environments for added value experiments has grown dramatically. This article reviews past successes, current developments and an exploration of future possibilities for these two x-ray techniques with an emphasis on the developments in the United Kingdom between 1980-2020.

The Contribution of NMR Spectroscopy in Understanding Perovskite Stabilization Phenomena

Although it has been exploited since the late 1900s to study hybrid perovskite materials, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has only recently received extraordinary research attention in this field. This very powerful technique allows the study of the physico-chemical and structural properties of molecules by observing the quantum mechanical magnetic properties of an atomic nucleus, in solution as well as in solid state. Its versatility makes it a promising technique either for the atomic and molecular characterization of perovskite precursors in colloidal solution or for the study of the geometry and phase transitions of the obtained perovskite crystals, commonly used as a reference material compared with thin films prepared for applications in optoelectronic devices. This review will explore beyond the current focus on the stability of perovskites (3D in bulk and nanocrystals) investigated via NMR spectroscopy, in order to highlight the chemical flexibility of perovskites and the role of interactions for thermodynamic and moisture stabilization. The exceptional potential of the vast NMR tool set in perovskite structural characterization will be discussed, aimed at choosing the most stable material for optoelectronic applications. The concept of a double-sided characterization in solution and in solid state, in which the organic and inorganic structural components provide unique interactions with each other and with the external components (solvents, additives, etc.), for material solutions processed in thin films, denotes a significant contemporary target.
