Laser-Engineered Microcavity Surfaces with a Nanoscale Superhydrophobic Coating for Extreme Boiling Performance

Corrosive effect on saturated pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of metallic surfaces with hierarchical micro/nano structures

Surface modification is of critical interest to enhance boiling heat transfer in terms of heat transfer coefficient or critical heat flux (CHF), which is significantly affected by distinct surface morphology and wettability and it can improve the efficiency and safety of equipment. Furthermore, actual service environment may cause severe corrosion to the processed structured surfaces while its consequence on boiling heat transfer is still obscure. In this article, comprehensive researches are conducted to unravel corrosive effect on metallic samples made of stainless steel (SS) and Inconel materials with microstructures. Different constructions (i.e., microgroove, microcavity and micropillar array) and characteristic dimensions (∼20, 50 μm) of microstructure, various duration time (up to 300 days) and pH values (∼7.0-8.5) of corrosive environment are compared thoroughly. Conclusions can be drawn that not all microstructures can enhance pool boiling heat transfer characteristics, especially in terms of CHF values. More importantly, CHF value of SS microgroove sample firstly increases from 60.94 to 94.09 W·cm-2 in 50 days, then decreases to 47.77 W·cm-2 in 300 days, which can be attributed to competition result between formation of hierarchical micro/nano structure with enhancing wicking capability and chemistry condition with increasing contact angle. In addition, distinct bubble dynamics during pool boiling is also analyzed. The insights obtained from this article can be used to guide surface modification method and to reveal evolvement rule of engineered metallic surface in highly corrosive and harsh boiling heating transfer environment.

Aluminum Micropillar Surfaces with Hierarchical Micro- and Nanoscale Features for Enhancement of Boiling Heat Transfer Coefficient and Critical Heat Flux

The rapid progress of electronic devices has necessitated efficient heat dissipation within boiling cooling systems, underscoring the need for improvements in boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF). While different approaches for micropillar fabrication on copper or silicon substrates have been developed and have shown significant boiling performance improvements, such enhancement approaches on aluminum surfaces are not broadly investigated, despite their industrial applicability. This study introduces a scalable approach to engineering hierarchical micro-nano structures on aluminum surfaces, aiming to simultaneously increase HTC and CHF. One set of samples was produced using a combination of nanosecond laser texturing and chemical etching in hydrochloric acid, while another set underwent an additional laser texturing step. Three distinct micropillar patterns were tested under saturated pool boiling conditions using water at atmospheric pressure. Our findings reveal that microcavities created atop pillars successfully facilitate nucleation and micropillars representing nucleation site areas on a microscale, leading to an enhanced HTC up to 242 kW m-2 K-1. At the same time, the combination of the surrounding hydrophilic porous area enables increased wicking and pillar patterning, defining the vapor-liquid pathways on a macroscale, which leads to an increase in CHF of up to 2609 kW m-2.

Functionalization of Ti64 via Direct Laser Interference Patterning and Its Influence on Wettability and Oxygen Bubble Nucleation

The nucleation of bubbles on solid surfaces is an important phenomenon in nature and technological processes like electrolysis. During proton-exchange membrane electrolysis, the nucleation and separation of the electrically nonconductive oxygen in the anodic cycle plays a crucial role to minimize the overpotential it causes in the system. This increases the efficiency of the process, making renewable energy sources and the "power-to-gas" strategy more viable. A promising approach is to optimize gas separation by surface functionalization in order to apply a more advantageous interface to industrial materials. In this work, the connection between the wettability and bubble nucleation of oxygen is investigated. For tailoring the wettability of Ti64 substrates, the direct laser interference patterning method is applied. A laser source with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a pulse duration of 12 ps is used to generate periodic pillar-like structures with different depths up to ∼5 μm. The resulting surface properties are characterized by water contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and X-ray photon spectroscopy. It was possible to generate structures with a water contact angle ranging from 20° up to nearly superhydrophobic conditions. The different wettabilities are validated based on X-ray photon spectroscopy and the different elemental composition of the samples. The results indicate that the surface character of the substrate adapts depending on the surrounding media and needs more time to reach a steady state for deeper structures. A custom setup is used to expose the functionalized surfaces to oxygen-oversaturated solutions. It is shown that a higher hydrophobicity of the structured surface yields a stronger interaction with the dissolved gas. This significantly enhances the oxygen nucleation up to nearly 350% by generating approximately 20 times more nucleation spots, but also smaller bubble sizes and a reduced detachment rate.

Effect of Surface Wettability on Nanoparticle Deposition during Pool Boiling on Laser-Textured Copper Surfaces

Prior studies have evidenced the potential for enhancing boiling heat transfer through modifications of surface or fluid properties. The deployment of nanofluids in pool boiling systems is challenging due to the deposition of nanoparticles on structured surfaces, which may result in performance deterioration. This study addresses the use of TiO2-water nanofluids (mass concentrations of 0.001 wt.% and 0.1 wt.%) in pool boiling heat transfer and concurrent mitigation of nanoparticle deposition on superhydrophobic laser-textured copper surfaces. Samples, modified through nanosecond laser texturing, were subjected to boiling in an as-prepared superhydrophilic (SHPI) state and in a superhydrophobic state (SHPO) following hydrophobization with a self-assembled monolayer of fluorinated silane. The boiling performance assessment involved five consecutive boiling curve runs under saturated conditions at atmospheric pressure. Results on superhydrophilic surfaces reveal that the use of nanofluids always led to a deterioration of the heat transfer coefficient (up to 90%) compared to pure water due to high nanoparticle deposition. The latter was largely mitigated on superhydrophobic surfaces, yet their performance was still inferior to that of the same surface in water. On the other hand, CHF values of 1209 kW m-2 and 1462 kW m-2 were recorded at 0.1 wt.% concentration on both superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, respectively, representing a slight enhancement of 16% and 27% compared to the results obtained on their counterparts investigated in water.

Metal Surface Engineering for Extreme Sustenance of Jumping Droplet Condensation

Water vapor condensation on metallic surfaces is critical to a broad range of applications, ranging from power generation to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Enhancing simultaneously the heat transfer efficiency, scalability, and durability of a condenser surface remains a persistent challenge. Coalescence-induced condensing droplet jumping is a capillarity-driven mechanism of self-ejection of microscopic condensate droplets from a surface. This mechanism is highly desired due to the fact that it continuously frees up the surface for new condensate to form directly on the surface, enhancing heat transfer without requiring the presence of the gravitational field. However, this condensate ejection mechanism typically requires the fabrication of surface nanotextures coated by an ultrathin (<10 nm) conformal hydrophobic coating (hydrophobic self-assembled monolayers such as silanes), which results in poor durability. Here, we present a scalable approach for the fabrication of a hierarchically structured superhydrophobic surface on aluminum substrates, which is able to withstand adverse conditions characterized by condensation of superheated steam shear flow at pressure and temperature up to ≈1.42 bar and ≈111 °C, respectively, and velocities in the range ≈3-9 m/s. The synergetic function of micro- and nanotextures, combined with a chemically grafted, robust ultrathin (≈4.0 nm) poly-1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl acrylate (pPFDA) coating, which is 1 order of magnitude thinner than the current state of the art, allows the sustenance of long-term coalescence-induced condensate jumping drop condensation for at least 72 h. This yields unprecedented, up to an order of magnitude higher heat transfer coefficients compared to filmwise condensation under the same conditions and significantly outperforms the current state of the art in terms of both durability and performance establishing a new milestone.

The Effect of Liquid-Solid Interactions upon Nucleate Boiling on Rough Surfaces: Insights from Molecular Dynamics

Despite the fact that engineered surface enabling remarkable phase change heat transfer have elicited increasing attention due to their ubiquitous applications in thermal management, the underlying mechanisms of intrinsic rough structures as well as the surface wettability on bubble dynamics remain to be explored. Therefore, a modified molecular dynamics simulation of nanoscale boiling was conducted in the present work to investigate bubble nucleation on rough nanostructured substrates with different liquid-solid interactions. Specifically, the initial stage of nucleate boiling was mainly investigated and the bubble dynamic behaviors were quantitively studied under different energy coefficients. Results shows that as the contact angle decreases, the nucleation rate increases, because liquid obtains more thermal energy there compared with that on less wetting surfaces. The rough profiles of the substrate can provide nanogrooves, which can enhance initial nucleate embryos, thereby improving thermal energy transfer efficiency. Moreover, atomic energies are calculated and adopted to explain how bubble nuclei are formed on various wetting substrates. The simulation results are expected to provide guidance towards surface design in state-of-the art thermal management systems, such as the surface wettability and the nanoscale surface patterns.

Nanosecond Laser-Textured Copper Surfaces Hydrophobized with Self-Assembled Monolayers for Enhanced Pool Boiling Heat Transfer

Increased cooling requirements of many compact systems involving high heat fluxes demand the development of high-performance cooling techniques including immersion cooling utilizing pool boiling. This study presents the functionalization of copper surfaces to create interfaces for enhanced pool boiling heat transfer. Three types of surface structures including a crosshatch pattern, shallow channels and deep channels were developed using nanosecond laser texturing to modify the surface micro- and nanomorphology. Each type of surface structure was tested in the as-prepared superhydrophilic state and superhydrophobic state following hydrophobization, achieved through the application of a nanoscale self-assembled monolayer of a fluorinated silane. Boiling performance evaluation was conducted through three consecutive runs under saturated conditions at atmospheric pressure utilizing water as the coolant. All functionalized surfaces exhibited enhanced boiling heat transfer performance in comparison with an untreated reference. The highest critical heat flux of 1697 kW m^-2 was achieved on the hydrophobized surface with shallow channels. The highest heat transfer coefficient of 291.4 kW m^-2 K^-1 was recorded on the hydrophobized surface with deep channels at CHF incipience, which represents a 775% enhancement over the highest values recorded on the untreated reference. Surface microstructure was identified as the key reason for enhanced heat transfer parameters. Despite large differences in surface wettability, hydrophobized surfaces exhibited comparable (or even higher) CHF values in comparison with their hydrophilic counterparts, which are traditionally considered as more favorable for achieving high CHF values. A significant reduction in bubble departure diameter was observed on the hydrophobized surface with deep channels and is attributed to effective vapor entrapment, which is pointed out as a major contributing reason behind the observed extreme boiling heat transfer performance.

Pool-Boiling Performance on Thin Metal Foils with Graphene-Oxide-Nanoflake Deposit

The pool-boiling performance of water on thin metal foils with graphene-oxide deposition was studied. The boiling performance was evaluated both on fully coated surfaces, achieved by spin-coating, and surfaces with a laser-textured nucleation site, into which graphene oxide was added via drop-casting. During the experiments, a high-speed IR camera was used to obtain the transient temperature and heat-flux distribution. At the same time, a high-speed video camera was used to acquire synchronized bubble-growth recordings. In addition, a surface-wettability analysis was conducted for all the samples. In the case of fully coated samples, graphene-oxide deposition resulted in an increased number of active nucleation sites and an increase in the nucleation temperature, leading to a lowered nucleation frequency. Meanwhile, samples with a single laser-textured nucleation site enabled the analysis of isolated vapor bubbles, confirming that graphene-oxide deposition leads to a higher nucleation temperature, consequently resulting in a larger bubble-departure diameter and longer growth time. Two explanations for the results are proposed: the wettability of graphene-oxide deposition and the filling of surface microcavities with graphene-oxide nanoflakes.

Effect of Nanoparticle Size and Concentration on Pool Boiling Heat Transfer with TiO2 Nanofluids on Laser-Textured Copper Surfaces

The enhancement of boiling heat transfer has been extensively shown to be achievable through surface texturing or fluid property modification, yet few studies have investigated the possibility of coupling both enhancement approaches. The present work focuses on exploring the possibility of concomitant enhancement of pool boiling heat transfer by using TiO₂-water nanofluid in combination with laser-textured copper surfaces. Two mass concentrations of 0.001 wt.% and 0.1 wt.% are used, along with two nanoparticle sizes of 4–8 nm and 490 nm. Nanofluids are prepared using sonification and degassed distilled water, while the boiling experiments are performed at atmospheric pressure. The results demonstrate that the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) using nanofluids is deteriorated compared to using pure water on the reference and laser-textured surface. However, the critical heat flux (CHF) is significantly improved at 0.1 wt.% nanoparticle concentration. The buildup of a highly wettable TiO₂ layer on the surface is identified as the main reason for the observed performance. Multiple subsequent boiling experiments using nanofluids on the same surface exhibited a notable shift in boiling curves and their instability at higher concentrations, which is attributable to growth of the nanoparticle layer on the surface. Overall, the combination of nanofluids boiling on a laser-textured surface proved to enhance the CHF after prolonged exposure to highly concentrated nanofluid, while the HTC was universally and significantly decreased in all cases.

Revisiting the Corresponding-States-Based Correlation for Pool Boiling Critical Heat Flux

A corresponding-states correlation for predicting the critical heat flux (CHF) in pool boiling conditions is proposed, and only requires knowledge of physical property constants of the fluid at any fluid temperature: molar mass, critical temperature, critical pressure, and the Pitzer acentric factor. If a fourth corresponding equation of state (EoS) parameter is added, a more accurate CHF correlation is obtained and matches Kutateladze–Zuber prediction within ±10% in the reduced temperature range of 0.55–0.95. This way, CHF can be easily predicted for any reduced temperature within the range of correlation’s validity by only knowing basic properties of the fluid. Additionally, two corresponding-states correlations for determining the capillary length are proposed and also do not rely on any temperature- and pressure-dependent fluid properties. A simpler correlation only using the Pitzer acentric factor is shown to be imprecise, and a more complex correlation also accounting for the fourth corresponding EoS parameter is recommended. These correlations are fundamental for further developments, which would allow for accurate prediction of CHF values on functionalized surfaces through further studies on the influence of interactions of fluid properties with other parameters, such as wetting and active nucleation site density.

The Influence of the Processing Parameters on the Laser-Ablation of Stainless Steel and Brass during the Engraving by Nanosecond Fiber Laser

In this paper, we investigate the influence of the following parameters: pulse duration, pulse repetition rate, line-to-line and pulse-to-pulse overlaps, and scanning strategy on the ablation of AISI 316L steel and CuZn37 brass with a nanosecond, 1064-nm, Yb fiber laser. The results show that the material removal rate (MRR) increases monotonically with pulse duration up to the characteristic repetition rate (f₀) where pulse energy and average power are maximal. The maximum MRR is reached at a repetition rate that is equal or slightly higher as f₀. The exact value depends on the correlation between the fluence of the laser pulses and the pulse repetition rate, as well as on the material properties of the sample. The results show that shielding of the laser beam by plasma and ejected material plays an important role in reducing the MRR. The surface roughness is mainly influenced by the line-to-line and the pulse-to-pulse overlaps, where larger overlap leads to lower roughness. Process optimization indicates that while operating with laser processing parameters resulting in the highest MRR, the best ratio between the MRR and surface roughness appears at ~50% overlap of the laser pulses, regardless of the material being processed.

Influence of Surface Wettability on Bubble Formation and Motion

Bubble dynamics plays an important role in boiling heat transfer, and surface wettability affects bubble behaviors. In the present work, the effects of surface superhydrophilicity (SHI) and superhydrophobicity (SHO) on bubble dynamics are experimentally studied by observing the formation and motion behaviors of air bubbles and vapor bubbles on varied surfaces. For air bubbles to better mimic vapor bubbles, the air bubbles are introduced in a water pool by injecting airflow from a through hole of the surface. Air bubble tests are first conducted on homogeneous SHO and SHI surfaces, respectively. It is observed that surface wettability significantly affects the bubble size and departure frequency. To discover the dynamic behaviors of a bubble under both SHI and SHO, a biphilic surface with SHI and SHO areas is fabricated, and air bubbles are injected right on the biphilic border between the two areas. It is observed the wettability contrast significantly displaces the air bubbles, which spread only onto the SHO area. The biphilic surface is fabricated for the pool boiling test. Vapor bubbles are observed at different stages of the nucleate boiling, showing surface effects similar to the observations of air bubbles. Not only does this study present the influence of surface wettability on air and vapor bubble behaviors but also it provides useful implications for understanding and optimizing the biphilic surface design for enhancing boiling heat transfer.

Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Nanostructured Copper Surfaces for Efficient Pool Boiling Heat Transfer with Water, Water/Butanol Mixtures and Novec 649

Increasing heat dissipation requirements of small and miniature devices demands advanced cooling methods, such as application of immersion cooling via boiling heat transfer. In this study, functionalized copper surfaces for enhanced heat transfer are developed and evaluated. Samples are functionalized using a chemical oxidation treatment with subsequent hydrophobization of selected surfaces with a fluorinated silane. Pool boiling tests with water, water/1-butanol mixture with self-rewetting properties and a novel dielectric fluid with low GWP (Novec™ 649) are conducted to evaluate the boiling performance of individual surfaces. The results show that hydrophobized functionalized surfaces covered by microcavities with diameters between 40 nm and 2 µm exhibit increased heat transfer coefficient (HTC; enhancements up to 120%) and critical heat flux (CHF; enhancements up to 64%) values in comparison with the untreated reference surface, complemented by favorable fabrication repeatability. Positive surface stability is observed in contact with water, while both the self-rewetting fluids and Novec™ 649 gradually degrade the boiling performance and in some cases also the surface itself. The use of water/1-butanol mixtures in particular results in surface chemistry and morphology changes, as observed using SEM imaging and Raman spectroscopy. This seems to be neglected in the available literature and should be focused on in further studies.

Micro-pin-finned Surfaces with Fractal Treelike Hydrophilic Networks for Flow Boiling Enhancement

Due to its outstanding heat transfer performance, flow boiling has a wide range of applications in many fields, especially for cooling of electronic devices. Previous studies have shown that the liquid replenishment on the downstream of the heating surface is the critical restriction of the increase of the critical heat flux (CHF). In this work, we designed a series of heterogeneous surfaces with fractal treelike hydrophilic networks for flow boiling enhancement. The micro-pin-finned surface structures are expected to increase the CHF and reduce the superheat by its high wickability. Moreover, by virtue of the efficient transport capacity of treelike networks, the fractal hydrophilic paths are designed to serve as the liquid delivery channels for the liquid replenishment on the downstream of the heating surface. The heterogeneous surfaces improve the comprehensive boiling heat transfer performance, especially the CHF, which is 82.2% higher than that of the smooth surface and 5.4% higher than the surface homogeneously covered by the microstructure with twice of the extended surface area. This work provides reference for the design of heterogeneous surfaces with both smooth and structured parts to increase the flow boiling CHF to some extent.

In Vivo Blood-Repellent Performance of a Controllable Facile-Generated Superhydrophobic Surface

Fabrication of a blood-repellent surface is essential for implantable or interventional medical devices to avoid thrombosis which can induce several serious complications. In this research, a novel micropatterned surface was fabricated via a facile and cost-effective method, and then, the in vitro and in vivo blood-repellent performances of the controllable superhydrophobic surface were systematically evaluated. First, a facile and cost-effective strategy was proposed to fabricate a controllable superhydrophobic surface on a medically pure titanium substrate using an ultraviolet laser process, ultrasonic acid treatment, and chemical modification. Second, the superhydrophobicity, durability, stability, and corrosion resistance of the superhydrophobic surface were confirmed with advanced testing techniques, which display a high contact angle, low adhesion to water and blood, and excellent resistant element precipitation. Third, the platelet-rich plasma and whole blood were applied to evaluate the hemocompatibility of the superhydrophobic surface by means of an in vitro experiment, and no blood cell activation or aggregation was observed on the superhydrophobic surface. Finally, hollow tubes with an inner superhydrophobic surface were implanted into the left carotid artery of rabbits for 2 weeks to verify the biocompatibility in vivo. The superhydrophobic surface could effectively eliminate blood cell adhesion and thrombosis. No obvious inflammation or inordinate proliferation was found by histological analysis. This research provides a facile and cost-effective strategy to prepare a blood-repellent surface, which may have promising applications in implanted biomedical devices.

Pool Boiling Performance of Water and Self-Rewetting Fluids on Hybrid Functionalized Aluminum Surfaces

The boiling performance of functionalized hybrid aluminum surfaces was experimentally investigated for water and self-rewetting mixtures of water and 1-butanol. Firstly, microstructured surfaces were produced via chemical etching in hydrochloric acid and the effect of the etching time on the surface morphology was evaluated. An etching time of 5 min was found to result in pitting corrosion and produced weakly hydrophilic microstructured surfaces with many microcavities. Observed cavity-mouth diameters between 3.6 and 32 μm are optimal for efficient nucleation and provided a superior boiling performance. Longer etching times of 10 and 15 min resulted in uniform corrosion and produced superhydrophilic surfaces with a micropeak structure, which lacked microcavities for efficient nucleation. In the second stage, hybrid surfaces combining lower surface energy and a modified surface microstructure were created by hydrophobization of etched aluminum surfaces using a silane agent. Hydrophobized surfaces were found to improve boiling heat transfer and their boiling curves exhibited a significantly lower superheat. Significant heat transfer enhancement was observed for hybrid microcavity surfaces with a low surface energy. These surfaces provided an early transition into nucleate boiling and promoted bubble nucleation. For a hydrophobized microcavity surface, heat transfer coefficients of up to 305 kW m−2 K−1 were recorded and an enhancement of 488% relative to the untreated reference surface was observed. The boiling of self-rewetting fluids on functionalized surfaces was also investigated, but a synergistic effect of developed surfaces and a self-rewetting working fluid was not observed. An improved critical heat flux was only obtained for the untreated surface, while a lower critical heat flux and lower heat transfer coefficients were measured on functionalized surfaces, whose properties were already tailored to promote nucleate boiling.

How Multilayered Feathers Enhance Underwater Superhydrophobicity

Inspired by ducks, we demonstrate that air pockets within stacked layers of porous superhydrophobic feathers can withstand up to five times more water pressure compared to a single feather. In addition to natural duck feathers, this "layer effect" was replicated with synthetic feathers created by laser cutting micrometric slots into aluminum foil and imparting a superhydrophobic nanostructure. It was revealed that adding layers promotes an increasingly redundant pathway for water impalement, which serves to pressurize the enclosed air pockets. This was validated by creating a probabilistic pore impalement model and also by filling the feathers with an incompressible oil, rather than air, to suppress the layer effect. In addition to revealing a utility of natural duck feathers, our findings suggest that multilayered engineered surfaces can maintain air pockets at high pressures, useful for reducing the drag and fouling of marine structures or enhancing desalination membranes.

High-Performance Ultrafine Bubble Aeration on Janus Aluminum Foil Prepared by Laser Microfabrication

Aeration is a mass transfer process, in which gas is dispersed into a liquid by utilizing air inflation or agitation. Typically, a microporous device is often used for aeration. Increasing the gas flow rate and decreasing the pore size reduce the bubble size, but the surface wettability of the gas/solid interface also has a significant impact on the bubble size, which is rarely studied. In this study, a superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic Janus aluminum foil (JAF) is fabricated by laser microstructuring and low surface energy modification. The gas-repelling superhydrophilic surface not only facilitates ultrafine bubble generation but also allows the bubbles to detach from the aerator surface quickly, while the superhydrophobic surface prevents water from infiltrating into the aeration chamber and reduces the mass transfer resistance. The micropores with different diameters are obtained by adjusting the laser processing parameters. The pore prepared by the laser is uniform, consequently leading to the uniform bubble size. When the pore diameter is set to 30 μm, the diameter of bubbles released from the superhydrophilic surface of the JAF is only 0.326 mm, and the gas dissolution rate is about six times that of the double-sided superhydrophobic aluminum foil. This simple, low-cost, and controllable method of the laser processing JAF has broad applications in wastewater treatment, energy production, and aquaculture.

Pool Boiling Heat Transfer Coefficients in Mixtures of Water and Glycerin

Heat transfer coefficients were investigated for saturated nucleate pool boiling of binary mixtures of water and glycerin at atmospheric pressure in a wide range of concentrations and heat fluxes. Mixtures with water mass fractions from 100% to 40% were boiled on a horizontal flat copper surface at heat fluxes from about 25 up to 270kWm−2. Experiments were carried out by static and dynamic method of measurement. Results of the static method show that the impact of mixture effects on heat transfer coefficient cannot be neglected and ideal heat transfer coefficient has to be corrected for all investigated concentrations and heat fluxes. Experimental data are correlated with the empirical correlation α=0.59q0.714+0.130ωw with mean relative error of 6%. Taking mixture effects into account, data are also successfully correlated with the combination of Stephan and Abdelsalam (1980) and Schlünder (1982) correlations with mean relative error of about 15%. Recommended coefficients of Schlünder correlation C0=1 and βL=2×10−4ms−1 were found to be acceptable for all investigated mixtures. The dynamic method was developed for fast measurement of heat transfer coefficients at continuous change of composition of boiling mixture. The dynamic method was tested for water–glycerin mixtures with water mass fractions from 70% down to 35%. Results of the dynamic method were found to be comparable with the static method. For water–glycerin mixtures with higher water mass fractions, precise temperature measurements are needed.

Dynamics of laser-induced cavitation bubble during expansion over sharp-edge geometry submerged in liquid - an inside view by diffuse illumination

Laser ablation in liquids is growing in popularity for various applications including nanoparticle production, breakdown spectroscopy, and surface functionalization. When laser pulse ablates the solid target submerged in liquid, a cavitation bubble develops. In case of "finite" geometries of ablated solids, liquid dynamical phenomena can occur inside the bubble when the bubble overflows the surface edge. To observe this dynamics, we use diffuse illumination of a flashlamp in combination with a high-speed videography by exposure times down to 250  ns. The developed theoretical modelling and its comparison with the experimental observations clearly prove that this approach widens the observable area inside the bubble. We thereby use it to study the dynamics of laser-induced cavitation bubble during its expansion over a sharp-edge ("cliff-like" 90°) geometry submerged in water, ethanol, and polyethylene glycol 300. The samples are 17  mm wide stainless steel plates with thickness in the range of 0.025-2  mm. Bubbles are induced on the samples by 1064-nm laser pulses with pulse durations of 7-60  ns and pulse energies of 10-55  mJ. We observe formation of a fixed-type secondary cavity behind the edge where low-pressure area develops due to bubble-driven flow of the liquid. This occurs when the velocity of liquid overflow exceeds ~20  m s^-1. A re-entrant liquid injection with up to ~40  m s^-1 velocity may occur inside the bubble when the bubble overflows the edge of the sample. Formation and characteristics of the jet evidently depend on the relation between the breakdown-edge offset and the bubble energy, as well as the properties of the surrounding liquid. Higher viscosity of the liquid prevents the generation of the jet.

Microtube Surfaces for the Simultaneous Enhancement of Efficiency and Critical Heat Flux during Pool Boiling

Boiling is an essential process in numerous applications including power plants, thermal management, water purification, and steam generation. Previous studies have shown that surfaces with microcavities or biphilic wettability can enhance the efficiency of boiling heat transfer, that is, the heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Surfaces with permeable structures such as micropillar arrays, in contrast, have shown significant enhancement of the critical heat flux (CHF). In this work, we investigated microtube structures, where a cavity is defined at the center of a pillar, as structural building blocks to enhance HTC and CHF simultaneously in a controllable manner. We demonstrated simultaneous CHF and HTC enhancements of up to 62 and 244%, respectively, compared to those of a smooth surface. The experimental data along with high-speed images elucidate the mechanism for simultaneous enhancement where bubble nucleation occurs in the microtube cavities for increased HTC and microlayer evaporation occurs around microtube sidewalls for increased CHF. Furthermore, we combined micropillars and microtubes to create surfaces that further increased CHF by achieving a path to separate nucleating bubbles and rewetting liquids. This work provides guidelines for the systematic surface design for boiling heat transfer enhancement and has important implications for understanding boiling heat transfer mechanisms.

Nanoparticle-Assisted Pool Boiling Heat Transfer on Micro-Pin-Fin Surfaces

Boiling heat transfer intensification is of significant relevance to energy conversion and various cooling processes. This study aimed to enhance the saturated pool boiling of FC-72 (a dielectric liquid) by surface modifications and explore mechanisms of the enhancement. Specifically, circular and square micro pin fins were fabricated on silicon surfaces by dry etching and then copper nanoparticles were deposited on the micro-pin-fin surfaces by electrostatic deposition. Experimental results indicated that compared with a smooth surface, the micro pin fins increased the heat transfer coefficient and the critical heat flux by more than 200 and 65-83%, respectively, which were further enhanced by the nanoparticles up to 24% and more than 20%, respectively. Correspondingly, the enhancement mechanism was carefully explored by high-speed bubble visualizations, surface wickability measurements, and model analysis. It was quantitatively found that small bubble departure diameters with high bubble departure frequencies promoted high heat transfer coefficients. The wickability, which characterizes the ability of a liquid to rewet a surface, played an important role in determining the critical heat flux, but further analyses indicated that evaporation beneath bubbles was also essential and competition between the wicking and the evaporation finally triggered the critical heat flux.
