Evolution of the PtNi Bimetallic Alloy Fuel Cell Catalyst under Simulated Operational Conditions

Stability of Bimetallic PtxRuy - From Model Surfaces to Nanoparticulate Electrocatalysts

Fundamental research campaigns in electrocatalysis often involve the use of model systems, such as single crystals or magnetron-sputtered thin films (single metals or metal alloys). The downsides of these approaches are that oftentimes only a limited number of compositions are picked and tested (guided by chemical intuition) and that the validity of trends is not verified under operating conditions typically present in real devices. These together can lead to deficient conclusions, hampering the direct application of newly discovered systems in real devices. In this contribution, the stability of magnetron-sputtered bimetallic PtxRuy thin film electrocatalysts (0 at. % to 100 at. % Ru content) along with three commercially available carbon-supported counterparts (50-67 at. % Ru content) was mapped under electrocatalytic conditions in acidic electrolytes using online ICP-MS. We found several differences between the two systems in the amount of metals dissolved along with the development of the morphology and composition. While the Pt-rich PtxRuy compositions remained unchanged, 30-50 nm diameter surface pits were detected in the case of the Ru-rich sputtered thin films. Contrastingly, the surface of the carbon-supported NPs enriched in Pt accompanied by the leaching of a significant amount of Ru from the alloy structure was observed. Change in morphology was accompanied by a mass loss reaching around 1-2 wt % in the case of the sputtered samples and almost 10 wt % for the NPs. Since PtxRuy has prime importance in driving alcohol oxidation reactions, the stability of all investigated alloys was screened in the presence of isopropanol. While Pt dissolution was marginally affected by the presence of isopropanol, several times higher Ru dissolution was detected, especially in the case of the Ru-rich compositions. Our results underline that trends in terms of electrocatalytic activity and stability cannot always be transferred from model samples to systems that are closer to the ones applied in real devices.

Monitoring of Pore Orientation by in Operando Grazing Incidence Small-Angle X-ray Scattering during Templated Electrodeposition of Mesoporous Pt Films

We have used in operando grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) to monitor structural changes during templated electrodeposition of mesoporous platinum films on gold electrodes from a ternary lyotropic liquid crystalline mixture of aqueous hexachloroplatinic acid and the diblock copolymer surfactant Brij56. While the cylindrical micelles of the lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) in the hexagonal phase have a center-to-center distance of 7.5 nm with a preferential alignment parallel to the electrode surface, the electrodeposited platinum films contain highly ordered mesopores arranged in a 2D hexagonal structure, with a center-to-center distance of about 8.5 nm and a preferential orientation perpendicular to the electrode surface. The progression of structural changes of the LLC template and the deposited mesoporous Pt could be monitored for the first time in operando by GISAXS: within the first 14 s of deposition, a nucleation burst of Pt coincides with a loss of preferential alignment of the LLC. Initially, the morphology of the 2-dimensionally nucleated Pt replicates the Au substrate. During the following 5 to 7 min, the growth morphology of the Pt film changes, and vertically aligned mesopores form. Our results indicate mutual interaction between the species involved in the electrodeposition and the LLC template, leading to a partial loss of horizontal orientation of the LLC during Pt nucleation before vertical rearrangement of the micelles to the electrode surface. The vertically aligned mesopores in the Pt and the possibility to produce freestanding films make these materials interesting in fields such as electrocatalysis, energy harvesting, and nanofluidics.

Optimal Pt-Au Alloying for Efficient and Stable Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts

Stabilization of cathode catalysts in hydrogen-fueled proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is paramount to their widespread commercialization. Targeting that aim, Pt-Au alloy catalysts with various compositions (Pt₉₅Au₅, Pt₉₀Au₁₀, and Pt₈₀Au₂₀) prepared by magnetron sputtering were investigated. The promising stability improvement of the Pt-Au catalyst, manifested in suppressed platinum dissolution with increasing Au content, was documented over an extended potential range up to 1.5 V_RHE. On the other hand, at elevated concentrations, Au showed a detrimental effect on oxygen reduction reaction activity. A systematic study involving complementary characterization techniques, electrochemistry, and Monte Carlo simulations based on density functional theory data enabled us to gain a comprehensive understanding of the composition-activity-stability relationship to find optimal Pt-Au alloying for maintaining the activity of platinum and improving its resistance to dissolution. According to the results, Pt-Au alloy with 10% gold represent the most promising composition retaining the activity of monometallic Pt while suppressing Pt dissolution by 50% at the upper potential limit of 1.2 V_RHE and by 20% at devastating 1.5 V_RHE.

In Situ Spectroscopy and Microscopy Insights into the CO Oxidation Mechanism on Au/CeO2(111)

In this work, we prepared and investigated in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) two stoichiometric CeO₂(111) surfaces containing low and high amounts of step edges decorated with 0.05 ML of gold using synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The UHV study helped to solve the still unresolved puzzle on how the one-monolayer-high ceria step edges affect the metal-substrate interaction between Au and the CeO₂(111) surface. It was found that the concentration of ionic Au⁺ species on the ceria surface increases with increasing number of ceria step edges and is not correlated with the concentration of Ce³⁺ ions that are supposed to form on the surface after its interaction with gold nanoparticles. We associated this with an additional channel of Au⁺ formation on the surface of CeO₂(111) related to the interaction of Au atoms with various peroxo oxygen species formed at the ceria step edges during the film growth. The study of CO oxidation on the highly stepped Au/CeO₂(111) model sample was performed by combining near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), UHV-STM, and near-ambient-pressure STM (NAP-STM). This powerful combination provided comprehensive information on the processes occurring on the Au/CeO₂(111) surface during the interaction with CO, O₂, and CO + O₂ (1:1) mixture at conditions close to the real working conditions of CO oxidation. It was found that the system demonstrates high stability in CO. However, the surface undergoes substantial chemical and morphological changes as the O₂ is added to the reaction cell. Already at 300 K, gold nanoparticles begin to grow using a mechanism that involves the disintegration of small gold nanoparticles in favor of the large ones. With increasing temperature, the model catalyst quickly transforms into a system of primarily large Au particles that contains no ionic gold species.

Understanding the Stability of Manganese Chromium Antimonate Electrocatalysts through Multimodal In Situ and Operando Measurements

Improving electrocatalyst stability is critical for the development of electrocatalytic devices. Herein, we utilize an on-line electrochemical flow cell coupled with an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) to characterize the impact of composition and reactant gas on the multielement dissolution of Mn(-Cr)-Sb-O electrocatalysts. Compared to Mn₂O₃ and Cr₂O₃ oxides, the antimonate framework stabilizes Mn at OER potentials and Cr at both ORR and OER potentials. Furthermore, dissolution of Mn and Cr from Mn(-Cr) -Sb-O is driven by the ORR reaction rate, with minimal dissolution under N₂. We observe preferential dissolution of Cr totaling 13% over 10 min at 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 V vs RHE, with only 1.5% loss of Mn, indicating an enrichment of Mn at the surface of the particles. Despite this asymmetric dissolution, operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) showed no measurable changes in the Mn K-edge at comparable potentials. This could suggest that modification to the Mn oxidation state and/or phase in the surface layer is too small or that the layer is too thin to be measured with the bulk XAS measurement. Lastly, on-line ICP-MS was used to assess the effects of applied potential, scan rate, and current on Mn-Cr-Sb-O during cyclic voltammetry and accelerated stress tests. With this deeper understanding of the interplay between oxygen reduction and dissolution, testing procedures were identified to maximize both activity and stability. This work highlights the use of multimodal in situ characterization techniques in tandem to build a more complete model of stability and develop protocols for optimizing catalyst performance.

Differences in the Electrochemical Performance of Pt-Based Catalysts Used for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells in Liquid Half- and Full-Cells

A substantial amount of research effort has been directed toward the development of Pt-based catalysts with higher performance and durability than conventional polycrystalline Pt nanoparticles to achieve high-power and innovative energy conversion systems. Currently, attention has been paid toward expanding the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of catalysts and increase their intrinsic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, despite innumerable efforts having been carried out to explore this possibility, most of these achievements have focused on the rotating disk electrode (RDE) in half-cells, and relatively few results have been adaptable to membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) in full-cells, which is the actual operating condition of fuel cells. Thus, it is uncertain whether these advanced catalysts can be used as a substitute in practical fuel cell applications, and an improvement in the catalytic performance in real-life fuel cells is still necessary. Therefore, from a more practical and industrial point of view, the goal of this review is to compare the ORR catalyst performance and durability in half- and full-cells, providing a differentiated approach to the durability concerns in half- and full-cells, and share new perspectives for strategic designs used to induce additional performance in full-cell devices.
