Abstract
Selective hydrogenation of alkynols to alkenols is an essential process for producing fine and intermediate chemicals. Currently, thermocatalytic alkynol hydrogenation faces several challenges, e.g., the safety of high-pressure hydrogen (H2) gas and the need for elevated temperature, and unavoidable side reactions, e.g., overhydrogenation. Here, a novel photocatalytic strategy is proposed for selectively reducing alkynols to alkenols with water as a hydrogen source under ambient temperature and pressure. Under the irradiation of simulated solar light, carbon nitride (C3N4) nanosheets with palladium (Pd) nanoparticles as cocatalysts (Pd-C3N4 NSs) exhibit a 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) conversion of 98% and 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBE) selectivity of 95%, outperforming state-of-the-art thermocatalysts and electrocatalysts. After natural-sunlight irradiation (average light intensity of 25.13 mW cm-2) for 36 h, a MBY conversion of 98% and MBE selectivity of 92% was achieved in a large-scale photocatalytic system (2500 cm2). Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that Pd cocatalysts on C3N4 facilitate the adsorption and hydrogenation of MBY as well as the formation of active hydrogen species, which promote the selective semihydrogenation of alkynols. Moreover, the proposed strategy is applicable to various water-soluble alkynols. This work paves the way for photocatalytic strategies to replace thermocatalytic hydrogenation processes using pressurized hydrogen.

Abstract
Alkynols semi-hydrogenation is a critical industrial process as the product, alkenols, have extensive applications in chemistry and life sciences. However, this class of reactions is plagued by the use of high-pressure hydrogen, Pd-based catalysts, and low efficiency of the contemporary thermocatalytic process. Here, we report an electrocatalytic approach for selectively hydrogenating alkynols to alkenols under ambient conditions. For representative 2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol, Cu nanoarrays derived electrochemically from CuO, achieve a high partial current density of 750 mA cm-2 and specific selectivity of 97% at -0.88 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode in alkaline solution. Even in a large two-electrode flow electrolyser, the Cu nanoarrays deliver a single-pass alkynol conversion of 93% with continuous production of 2-methyl-3-butene-2-ol at a rate of ~169 g gCu-1 h-1. Theoretical and in situ electrochemical infrared investigations reveal that the semi-hydrogenation performance is enhanced by exothermic alkynol adsorption and alkenol desorption on the Cu surfaces. Furthermore, this electrocatalytic semi-hydrogenation strategy is shown to be applicable to a variety of alkynol substrates.

Abstract
Selective hydrogenation of alkynes to obtain alkenes is a key reaction in petrochemical and fine chemical industries. However, the development of stable and highly selective catalysts with uniformly dispersed active sites is still immensely challenging for the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes. In this study, N-doped porous carbon nanospheres (NPCNs) were synthesized by the nanoemulsion self-assembly and subsequently carbonization method. Ultrafine PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) were uniformly dispersed and immobilized on NPCNs. The obtained PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited an open framework and abundant active sites originating from ultrafine PdCu NPs. In the semi-hydrogenation of alkynes, the PdCu/NPCNs catalyst exhibited a remarkable performance and stability, outperforming most of the classical catalysts. The excellent performance was related to the introduction of a secondary metal Cu, which can regulate the electronic state of Pd active sites to further enhance the hydrogenation activity and selectivity. Hence, the facile approach reported herein may be useful for constructing highly dispersed bimetallic NP-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes in the petrochemical industry.

Abstract
Designing highly active and stable lead-free palladium-based catalysts without introducing surfactants and stabilizers is vital for large-scale and high-efficiency manufacturing of cis-enols via continuous-flow semi-hydrogenation of alkynols. Herein, we report an intermetallic PdZn/ZnO catalyst, designed by using the coupling strategy of strong electrostatic adsorption and reactive metal-support interaction, which can be used as a credible alternative to the commercial PdAg/Al2O3 and Lindlar catalysts. Intermetallic PdZn nanoparticles with electron-poor active sites on a Pd/ZnO catalyst significantly boost the thermodynamic selectivity with respect to the mechanistic selectivity and therefore enhance the selectivity towards cis-enols. Based on in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectra as well as simulations, we identify that the preferential adsorption of alkynol over enol on PdZn nanoparticles suppresses the over-hydrogenation of enols. These results suggest the application of fine surface engineering technology in oxide-supported metal (particles) could tune the ensemble and ligand effects of metallic active sites and achieve directional hydrogenation in fine chemical synthesis.

Abstract
Selective hydrogenation of alkynes plays a pivotal role in the field of chemical production but still suffers from restrained catalytic activity and low alkene selectivity. Herein, a dynamic modification strategy was utilized by preferentially attaching diethylenetriamine (DETA) to the surface of the support to modify the Pd catalyst. The DETA-modified Pd catalyst demonstrates unprecedented reactivity (14,412 h-1) and selectivity as high as 94% for the semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol at 35 °C, presenting a 36-fold higher reactivity than the Lindlar catalyst. Moreover, the yield exceeds 98.2% at full conversion under no solvent and organic adsorbate conditions, indicating the potential applications for industrial production. Systematic studies reveal that flexible DETA serves in a reversible "breathing pattern" for the molecular discrimination by constructing dynamic metal-support interaction (DMSI), enabling selective exclusion of alkenes from the Pd surface. DETA is competent to dynamically adjust the adsorption behaviors of reactants and effectively boost the intrinsic activity of the modified catalyst. Impressively, the DETA-modified Pd catalyst exhibits exceptional stability even after being recycled 20 times. This work sheds light on a novel and applicable method for the rational design of heterogeneous catalysts via DMSI.

Abstract
In this work, the effect of pretreatment conditions (10% H2/Ar flow rate 25 mL/min and 400 °C, 3 h or 600 °C, 17 h) on the catalytic performance of 1 wt.% Pd/γ-Al2O3 has been evaluated for hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol in continuous-flow mode. Two palladium catalysts have been tested under different conditions of pressure and temperature and characterized using various physicochemical techniques. The catalytic performance of red(400 °C)-Pd/γ-Al2O3 and red(600 °C)-Pd/γ-Al2O3 are affected by the coexistence of several related factors like the competition between PdH and PdCx formation during the reaction, structure sensitivity, hydrogen spillover to the alumina support and presence or absence of Pd–Al species. High-temperature reduction leads to formation of Pd–Al species in addition to pure Pd. The Pd–Al species which reveal unique electronic properties by decreasing the Pdδ− surface concentration via electron transfer from Pd to Al, leading to a weaker Pd–Alkyl bonding, additionally assisted by the hydrogen spillover, are the sites of improved semi-hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol towards 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (97%)—an important intermediate for vitamin A synthesis.
