Enhanced Mechanical Stability and Biodegradability of Ti-Infiltrated Polylactide

How the chemical structure of phosphoramides affect the fire retardancy and mechanical properties of polylactide?

Phosphoramides, as a kind of high-efficient fire retardants, have been designed in many structures and endowed exceptional fire retardancy to polylactide (PLA). However, due to ignorance of the structure-property correlation, the effect of phosphoramides' structure on the fire retardancy and mechanical properties of PLA is still unclear. Herein, a series of biobased phosphoramides (phosphoramide (V1), linear polyphosphoramide (V2) and hyperbranched polyphosphamide (V3)) were designed and incorporated into PLA, and the structural effect of phosphoramides on the fire-retardant and mechanical properties of PLA was deeply researched. Among three kinds of phosphoramides, the hyperbranched polyphosphoramide is more effective than the corresponding linear polyphosphoramide and phosphoramide in improving the fire-retardant and anti-dripping properties of PLA, and only linear polyphosphoramide shows a positive effect in the mechanical strength of PLA. This work provides a feasible strategy for creating mechanically robust and fire-retardant polymer composites by molecularly tailoring the structure of fire retardants and uncovering their structure-property relationship.

Three-Dimensional Printing of Graphene Oxide/Poly-L-Lactic Acid Scaffolds Using Fischer-Koch Modeling

Accurately printing customizable scaffolds is a challenging task because of the complexity of bone tissue composition, organization, and mechanical behavior. Graphene oxide (GO) and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) have drawn attention in the field of bone regeneration. However, as far as we know, the Fischer-Koch model of the GO/PLLA association for three-dimensional (3D) printing was not previously reported. This study characterizes the properties of GO/PLLA-printed scaffolds in order to achieve reproducibility of the trabecula, from virtual planning to the printed piece, as well as its response to a cell viability assay. Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy were performed to evaluate the physicochemical properties of the nanocomposites. Cellular adhesion, proliferation, and growth on the nanocomposites were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. Cell viability tests revealed no significant differences among different trabeculae and cell types, indicating that these nanocomposites were not cytotoxic. The Fischer Koch modeling yielded satisfactory results and can thus be used in studies directed at diverse medical applications, including bone tissue engineering and implants.

Studies on the effect of polylactide in-situ grafting during melt processing on poly(ʟ-lactide)/graphene oxide composite films

The present work tried to solve the compatibility and dispersion problems of industrial grade graphene oxide (GO) mixing with polylactide (PLA) by melt processing for practical application. PLA was grafted on the GO using the silane coupling agent (KH560) as "bridge" by in-situ melting reaction to improve the compatibility. For better compatibility and dispersion, poly(ᴅ-lactide) (PDLA) was grafted on GO (D-G) to form stereocomplex crystallites with poly(ʟ-lactide) (PLLA) to enhance the interaction between GO and PLLA matrix. By biaxial stretching, the PLLA and GO composite films were prepared. Results show that GO was seriously aggregated in the film containing GO without PLA grafting (PLLA/L/G0.05) and the average size of aggregated GO was about 19.5 μm. PLA grafting decreased the aggregated GO size, so that the films containing L-G or D-G presented better dispersion. The film containing 5 % D-G (PLLA/D-G0.05) exhibited the smallest average size of aggregated GO, about 12.7 μm. Compared with neat PLLA film, PLLA/L/G0.05 film presented worse tensile properties due to serious aggregation of GO. While, PLLA/D-G0.05 film presented the best tensile performance that tensile strength and elongation at break reached 120 MPa and 107 %, respectively.

Electroactive, Antibacterial, and Biodegradable Poly(lactic acid) Nanofibrous Air Filters for Healthcare

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) hold great potential in the field of biodegradable filters for air purification but are largely limited by the relatively low electret properties and high susceptibility to bacteria. Herein, we disclosed a facile approach to the fabrication of electroactive and antibacterial PLA NFMs impregnated with a highly dielectric photocatalyst. In particular, the microwave-assisted doping (MAD) protocol was employed to yield Zn-doped titanium dioxide (Zn-TIO), featuring the well-defined anatase phase, a uniform size of ∼65 nm, and decreased band gap (3.0 eV). The incorporation of Zn-TIO (2, 6, and 10 wt %) into PLA gave rise to a significant refinement of the electrospun nanofibers, decreasing from the highest diameter of 581 nm for pure PLA to the lowest value of 264 nm. More importantly, dramatical improvements in the dielectric constants, surface potential, and electret properties were simultaneously achieved for the composite NFMs, as exemplified by a nearly 94% increase in surface potential for 3-day-aged PLA/Zn-TIO (90/10) compared with that of pure PLA. The well regulation of morphological features and promotion of electroactivity contributed to a distinct increase in the air filtration performance, as demonstrated by 98.7% filtration of PM_0.3 with the highest quality factor of 0.032 Pa^-1 at the airflow velocity of 32 L/min for PLA/Zn-TIO (94/6), largely surpassing pure PLA (89.4%, 0.011 Pa^-1). Benefiting from the effective generation of reactive radicals and gradual release of Zn²⁺ by Zn-TIO, the electroactive PLA NFMs were ready to profoundly inactivate Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The exceptional combination of remarkable electret properties and excellent antibacterial performance makes the PLA membrane filters promising for healthcare.

MG-63 and FetMSC Cell Response on Atomic Layer Deposited TiO2 Nanolayers Prepared Using Titanium Tetrachloride and Tetraisopropoxide

Titanium oxide nanocoatings were synthesized on the surface of monocrystalline silicon and ultra-fine-grained titanium by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) and titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP). The morphology of the samples was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The structure and composition were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle measurements, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The cytological response of osteosarcoma MG-63 and human fetal mesenchymal stem cells (FetMSCs) were studied by analyzing their morphology, viability, and alkaline phosphatase activity with and without the use of medium-induced differentiation in the osteogenic direction. A significant influence of the precursor type and ALD temperature on the crystal structure, morphology, composition, and surface free energy of TiO2 nanocoatings was found. The biocompatibility of amorphous non-stoichiometric and partially crystalline stoichiometric TiO2 coatings was compared. Both types of cells showed faster adhesion and improved spreading on the surface for the samples from TTIP compared to those from TiCl4 at the early stages of cultivation (2 h) due to the difference in composition and higher surface free energy. No cytotoxic effect was found on both types of coatings, nor was there a noticeable difference in cell differentiation. All ALD coatings provided excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties.

Plastic Pollution: A Perspective on Matters Arising: Challenges and Opportunities

Plastic pollution is a persistent challenge worldwide with the first reports evidencing its impact on the living and nonliving components of the environment dating back more than half a century. The rising concerns regarding the immediate and long-term consequences of plastic matter entrainment into foods and water cannot be overemphasized in light of our pursuit of sustainability (in terms of food, water, environment, and our health). Hence, some schools of thought recommend the revisitation and continuous assessment of the plastic economy, while some call for the outright ban of plastic materials, demonstrating that plastic pollution requires, more than ever, renewed, innovative, and effective approaches for a holistic solution. In this paper, dozens of reports on various aspects of plastic pollution assessment are collated and reviewed, and the impact of plastic pollution on both the living and nonliving components of the environment is discussed. Current challenges and factors hindering efforts to mitigate plastic pollution are identified to inform the presented recommendations while underscoring, for policymakers, stakeholders, and the scientific community, the exigency of finding sustainable solutions to plastic pollution that not only encompass existing challenges but also future threats presented by plastic pollution.
