Progress in Fabrication and Applications of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Microcapsules

Liquid crystals (LCs) are well known for inherent responsiveness to external stimuli, such as light, thermal, magnetic, and electric fields. Cholesteric LCs are among the most fascinating, since they possess distinctive optical properties due to the helical molecular orientation. However, the good flow, easy contamination, and poor stability of small-molecule LCs limit their further applications, and microencapsulation as one of the most effective tools can evade these disadvantages. Microencapsulation can offer shell-core structure with LCs in the core can strengthen their stability, avoiding interference with the environment while maintaining the stimuli-responsiveness and optical properties. Here, we report recent progress in the fabrication and applications of cholesteric LC microcapsules (CLCMCs). We summarize general properties and basic principles, fabrication methods including interfacial polymerization, in-situ polymerization, complex coacervation, solvent evaporation, microfluidic and polymerization of reactive mesogens, and then give a comprehensive overview of their applications in various popular domains, including smart fabrics, smart sensor, smart displays, anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, biomedicine and actuators. Finally, we discuss the currently facing challenges and the potential development directions in this field.

A stretchable, mechanically robust polymer exhibiting shape-memory-assisted self-healing and clustering-triggered emission

Self-healing and recyclable polymer materials are being developed through extensive investigations on noncovalent bond interactions. However, they typically exhibit inferior mechanical properties. Therefore, the present study is aimed at synthesizing a polyurethane-urea elastomer with excellent mechanical properties and shape-memory-assisted self-healing behavior. In particular, the introduction of coordination and hydrogen bonds into elastomer leads to the optimal elastomer exhibiting good mechanical properties (strength, 76.37 MPa; elongation at break, 839.10%; toughness, 308.63 MJ m-3) owing to the phased energy dissipation mechanism involving various supramolecular interactions. The elastomer also demonstrates shape-memory properties, whereby the shape recovery force that brings damaged surfaces closer and facilitates self-healing. Surprisingly, all specimens exhibite clustering-triggered emission, with cyan fluorescence is observed under ultraviolet light. The strategy reported herein for developing multifunctional materials with good mechanical properties can be leveraged to yield stimulus-responsive polymers and smart seals.

Water-Stable Upconverting Coordination Polymer Nanoparticles for Transparent Films and Anticounterfeiting Patterns with Air-Stable Upconversion

Photon upconversion (UC) based on triplet-triplet annihilation is a very promising phenomenon with potential application in several areas, though, due to the intrinsic mechanism, the achievement of diffusion-limited solid materials with air-stable UC is still a challenge. Herein, we report UC coordination polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) combining sensitizer and emitter molecules especially designed with alkyl spacers that promote the amorphous character. Beyond the characteristic constraints of crystalline MOFs, amorphous CPNs facilitate high dye density and flexible ratio tunability. To show the universality of the approach, two types of UC-CPNs are reported, exhibiting highly photostable UC in two different visible spectral regions. Given their nanoscale, narrow size distribution, and good chemical/colloidal stability in water, the CPNs were also successfully printed as anticounterfeiting patterns and used to make highly transparent and photostable films for luminescent solar concentrators, both showing air-stable UC.

Multiple/Two-Way Shape Memory Poly(urethane-urea-amide) Elastomers

Multiple and two-way reversible shape memory polymers (M/2W-SMPs) are highly promising for many fields due to large deformation, lightweight, strong recovery stress, and fast response rates. Herein, a semi-crystalline block poly(urethane-urea-amide) elastomers (PUUAs) are prepared by the copolymerization of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane (OPU) and amino-terminated oligomeric polyamide-1212 (OPA). PUUAs, composed of OPA as stationary phase and PTMEG as reversible phase, exhibit excellent rigidity, flexibility, and resilience, and cPUUA-C₇ -S₂₅ exhibits the best tensile property with strength of 10.3 MPa and elongation at break of 360.2%. Besides, all the PUUAs possess two crystallization/melting temperatures and a glass transition temperature, which endow PUUAs with multiple and reversible two-way shape memory effect (M/2W-SME). Physically crosslinked PUUA-C₀ -S₂₅ exhibits excellent dual and triple shape memory, and micro chemically crosslinked cPUUA-C₇ -S₂₅ further shows quadruple shape memory behavior. Additionally, both PUUA-C₀ -S₂₅ and cPUUA-C₇ -S₂₅ have 2W-SME. Intriguingly, cPUUA-C₇ -S₂₅ can achieve a higher temperature (up to 165 °C) SME, which makes it suitable for more complex and changeable applications. Based on the advantages of M/2W-SME, a temperature-responsive application scenario where PUUAs can transform spontaneously among different shapes is designed. These unique M/2W-SME and high-temperature SME will enable the applications of high-temperature sensors, actuators, and aerospace equipment.

Flexible and Mechanically Enhanced Polyurethane Composite for γ-ray Shielding and Thermal Regulation

Microencapsulation of paraffin with lead tungstate shell (Pn@PWO) shows the drawbacks of low wettability and poor leakage-proof property and thermal reliability, restricting the application of phase change microcapsules. Herein, a novel paraffin@lead tungstate@silicon dioxide double-shelled microcapsule (Pn@PWO@SiO₂) has been successfully constructed by the emulsion-templated interfacial polycondensation and applied in the waterborne polyurethane (WPU). The results indicated that a SiO₂ layer with controlled thickness was formed on the PbWO₄ shell. The Pn@PWO@SiO₂ microcapsules have exhibited superior leakage-proof properties and thermal reliability through double-shelled protection, and the leakage rate decreased by at least 54.11% compared to that of Pn@PWO microcapsules. The SiO₂ layer with abundant polar groups ameliorated the wettability of microcapsules and the interfacial compatibility between microcapsules and the WPU matrix. The tensile strength of WPU/Pn@PWO@SiO₂-2 composites reached 10.98 MPa, which was over 7 times greater than that of WPU/Pn@PWO composites. In addition, WPU/Pn@PWO@SiO₂-2 composites with a latent heat capacity of over 41 J/g exhibited efficient phase change stability and γ-ray shielding properties. Also, the mass attenuation coefficients reached 1.38 cm²/g at 105.3 keV and 1.12 cm²/g at 86.5 keV, respectively. These properties will greatly promote the application of WPU/Pn@PWO@SiO₂ composites into γ-ray-shielding devices with thermal regulation.

Slippery Shape Memory Tube for Smart Droplet Transportation

Recently, research about controllable droplet transportation in tubes has aroused increased interest. However, existing strategies mainly depend on the elastic tube's shape variation that needs constant external stimuli. Meanwhile, these reported tubes are only suitable for wetting liquids. To achieve the transportation of diverse liquids, different coatings are needed to modify the tube's inner surface to realize complete wetting of different liquids. Herein, we advance a design principle by combining a shape memory polymer (SMP) tube and Nepenthes pitcher plant-inspired slippery surface, which can solve the above-mentioned problems. The SMP offers a tunable tube shape owing to its shape memory effect (SME); the slippery surface reduces the adhesion and expands the applicable range of liquids. Transportation of both water and oils in a wide range of surface tension values can be smartly controlled. The results show that not only the transportation speed and direction can be adjusted but also diverse modes including round-trip transportation, segmented transportation, and antigravity transportation can be achieved. Moreover, applications of the tube in batch inspection of different droplets and step-by-step control of multiple microreactions are also displayed. This work reports a strategy for droplet transportation control based on the tube's SME, which initiates some fresh ideas for designing new superwetting materials toward smart liquid transportation.

Research Progress of Shape Memory Polymer and 4D Printing in Biomedical Application

As a kind of smart material, shape memory polymer (SMP) shows great application potential in the biomedical field. Compared with traditional metal-based medical devices, SMP-based devices have the following characteristics: 1) The adaptive ability allows the biomedical device to better match the surrounding tissue after being implanted into the body by minimally invasive implantation; 2) it has better biocompatibility and adjustable biodegradability; 3) mechanical properties can be regulated in a large range to better match with the surrounding tissue. 4D printing technology is a comprehensive technology based on smart materials and 3D printing, which has great application value in the biomedical field. 4D printing technology breaks through the technical bottleneck of personalized customization and provides a new opportunity for the further development of the biomedical field. This paper summarizes the application of SMP and 4D printing technology in the field of bone tissue scaffolds, tracheal scaffolds, and drug release, etc. Moreover, this paper analyzes the existing problems and prospects, hoping to provide a preliminary discussion and useful reference for the application of SMP in biomedical engineering.

Photoreversible Bond-Based Shape Memory Polyurethanes with Light-Induced Self-Healing, Recyclability, and 3D Fluorescence Encryption

Developing a shape memory polyurethane with high mechanical properties, excellent self-healing has become a huge challenge for the development of smart materials. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of a shape memory polyurethane network terminated with coumarin units (HEOMC-PU) to address this conundrum. The synthesized HEOMC-PU exhibits exceptional mechanical performance with a breaking elongation of 746% and toughness of 55.5 MJ·m-3. By utilizing the dynamically reversible behavior of coumarin units to repair the damaged network, the efficient self-healing performance (99.2%) of HEOMC-PU is obtained. In addition, the prepared network and light-induced dynamic reversibility endow the HEOMC-PU with both liquid-state remoldability and solid-state plasticity, respectively, enabling polyurethane to be recycled and processed multiple times. Furthermore, based on the fluorescence responsive characteristic of coumarin, HEOMC-PU with a fluorescent pattern can be deformed into specific three-dimensional configurations by combining photolithography, self-healing, and the shape memory effect. Such a multilevel and multidimensional anti-counterfeiting platform with rewritable fluorescent patterns and reconfigurable shapes can open up a new encryption approach for future intelligent anti-counterfeiting.

Preparation and performance of chlorfenapyr microcapsules with a degradable polylactide-based polyurethane wall material

To improve the utilization rate of chlorfenapyr and make the wall material of chlorfenapyr microcapsules easily degradable, polylactide diol, toluene diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol were used to prepare a chlorfenapyr microcapsule suspension by interfacial polymerization. The product was characterized by the methods of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the microcapsule particles were spherical, with an encapsulation efficiency of 84.20%. The diluted product had good wetting and spreading abilities on cabbage leaves. Compared with other commercial formulations, the slow-release effect of the microcapsule suspension was more obvious and the release mechanisms conform to Fickian diffusion, with the release rate controllable by adjusting the external pH conditions. Furthermore, the wall material of the microcapsules showed good degradation performance in a phosphate-buffered solution. Microencapsulation by this method significantly increased the validity period of chlorfenapyr and the wall material was also degraded easily.

Synthesis and characterization of microencapsulated phase change materials with chitosan-based polyurethane shell

In this paper, chitosan-based polyurethane (c-PU) microencapsulated phase change materials (MicroPCMs) were prepared via the interfacial polymerization reaction of hexamethylene diisocyanate and chitosan accompanied by the charge attraction-assisted. The utilization of natural non-toxic chitosan in MicroPCMs expanded the application of chitosan and guided a new approach to preparing green shell. And the morphology of MicroPCMs with different reaction ration, surfactant and the pH value of reaction system were systematically investigated. The MicroPCMs with c-PU shell exhibited outstanding latent thermal performance (ΔH_m = 106.3 J/g, ΔH_c = -105.1 J/g), high energy storage efficiency (E = 71.4%), excellent thermal stability and cyclic durability. The c-PU MicroPCMs with reversible photochromic show promising application in the fields of anti-counterfeiting technology and flexible wearable UV protective clothing.

Synthesis of Polyamide-Based Microcapsules via Interfacial Polymerization: Effect of Key Process Parameters

Polyamide microcapsules have gathered significant research interest during the past years due to their good barrier properties; however, the potential of their application is limited due to the fragility of the polymeric membrane. Fully aliphatic polyamide microcapsules (PA MCs) were herein prepared from ethylene diamine and sebacoyl chloride via interfacial polymerization, and the effect of key encapsulation parameters, i.e., monomers ratio, core solvent, stirring rate and time during the polymerization step, were examined concerning attainable process yield and microcapsule properties (shell molecular weight and thermal properties, MC size and morphology). The process yield was found to be mainly influenced by the nature of the organic solvent, which was correlated to the diffusion potential of the diamine from the aqueous phase to the organic core through the polyamide membrane. Thus, spherical microcapsules with a size between 14 and 90 μm and a yield of 33% were prepared by using toluene as core solvent. Milder stirring during the polymerization step led to an improved microcapsule morphology; yet, the substantial improvement of mechanical properties remains a challenge.

Materials and Schemes of Multimodal Reconfigurable Micro/Nanomachines and Robots: Review and Perspective

Mechanically programmable, reconfigurable micro/nanoscale materials that can dynamically change their mechanical properties or behaviors, or morph into distinct assemblies or swarms in response to stimuli have greatly piqued the interest of the science community due to their unprecedented potentials in both fundamental research and technological applications. To date, a variety of designs of hard and soft materials, as well as actuation schemes based on mechanisms including chemical reactions and magnetic, acoustic, optical, and electric stimuli, have been reported. Herein, state-of-the-art micro/nanostructures and operation schemes for multimodal reconfigurable micro/nanomachines and swarms, as well as potential new materials and working principles, challenges, and future perspectives are discussed.
