Strong In-Plane Magnetic Field-Induced Reemergent Superconductivity in the van der Waals Heterointerface of NbSe2 and CrCl3

Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity at KTaO3 Heterointerfaces

The coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism is a long-standing issue in superconductivity due to the antagonistic nature of these two ordered states. Experimentally identifying and characterizing novel heterointerface superconductors that coexist with magnetism presents significant challenges. Here, we report the observation of two-dimensional long-range ferromagnetic order in a KTaO3 heterointerface superconductor, showing the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism. Remarkably, our direct current superconducting quantum interference device measurements reveal an in-plane magnetization hysteresis loop persisting above room temperature. Moreover, first-principles calculations and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements provide decisive insights into the origin of the observed robust ferromagnetism, attributing it to oxygen vacancies that localize electrons in nearby Ta 5d states. Our findings suggest KTaO3 heterointerfaces as time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors, injecting fresh momentum into the exploration of the intricate interplay between superconductivity and magnetism enhanced by the strong spin-orbit coupling inherent to the heavy Ta in 5d orbitals.

Proximity Effect-Induced Magnetoresistance Enhancement in a Fe3GeTe2/NbSe2/Fe3GeTe2 Magnetic Tunnel Junction

The coupling between van der Waals-layered magnetic and superconducting materials holds the possibility of revealing novel physical mechanisms and realizing spintronic devices with new functionalities. Here, we report on the realization and investigation of a maximum ∼17-fold magnetoresistance (MR) enhancement based on a vertical magnetic tunnel junction of Fe3GeTe2 (FGT)/NbSe2/FGT near the NbSe2 layer's superconducting critical temperature (TC) of 6.8 K. This enhancement is attributed to the band splitting in the atomically thin NbSe2 spacer layer induced by the magnetic proximity effect on the material interfaces. However, the band splitting is strongly suppressed by the interlayer coupling in the thick NbSe2 layer. Correspondingly, the device with a thick NbSe2 layer displays no MR increase near TC but a current dependent on transport properties at extremely low temperatures. This work carefully investigates the mechanism of MR enhancement, paving an efficient way for the modulation of spintronics' properties and the achievement of spin-based integrated circuits.

Strain-switchable field-induced superconductivity

Field-induced superconductivity is a rare phenomenon where an applied magnetic field enhances or induces superconductivity. Here, we use applied stress as a control switch between a field-tunable superconducting state and a robust non-field-tunable state. This marks the first demonstration of a strain-tunable superconducting spin valve with infinite magnetoresistance. We combine tunable uniaxial stress and applied magnetic field on the ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe0.88Co0.12)2As2 to shift the field-induced zero-resistance temperature between 4 K and a record-high value of 10 K. We use x-ray diffraction and spectroscopy measurements under stress and field to reveal that strain tuning of the nematic order and field tuning of the ferromagnetism act as independent control parameters of the superconductivity. Combining comprehensive measurements with DFT calculations, we propose that field-induced superconductivity arises from a novel mechanism, namely, the uniquely dominant effect of the Eu dipolar field when the exchange field splitting is nearly zero.

Local control of superconductivity in a NbSe2/CrSBr van der Waals heterostructure

Two-dimensional magnets and superconductors are emerging as tunable building-blocks for quantum computing and superconducting spintronic devices, and have been used to fabricate all two-dimensional versions of traditional devices, such as Josephson junctions. However, novel devices enabled by unique features of two-dimensional materials have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we present NbSe2/CrSBr van der Waals superconducting spin valves that exhibit infinite magnetoresistance and nonreciprocal charge transport. These responses arise from a unique metamagnetic transition in CrSBr, which controls the presence of localized stray fields suitably oriented to suppress the NbSe2 superconductivity in nanoscale regions and to break time reversal symmetry. Moreover, by integrating different CrSBr crystals in a lateral heterostructure, we demonstrate a superconductive spin valve characterized by multiple stable resistance states. Our results show how the unique physical properties of layered materials enable the realization of high-performance quantum devices based on novel working principles.

Spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking in KTaO3 heterointerface superconductors

Broken symmetries play a fundamental role in superconductivity and influence many of its properties in a profound way. Understanding these symmetry breaking states is essential to elucidate the various exotic quantum behaviors in non-trivial superconductors. Here, we report an experimental observation of spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking of superconductivity at the heterointerface of amorphous (a)-YAlO₃/KTaO₃(111) with a superconducting transition temperature of 1.86 K. Both the magnetoresistance and superconducting critical field in an in-plane field manifest striking twofold symmetric oscillations deep inside the superconducting state, whereas the anisotropy vanishes in the normal state, demonstrating that it is an intrinsic property of the superconducting phase. We attribute this behavior to the mixed-parity superconducting state, which is an admixture of s-wave and p-wave pairing components induced by strong spin-orbit coupling inherent to inversion symmetry breaking at the heterointerface of a-YAlO₃/KTaO₃. Our work suggests an unconventional nature of the underlying pairing interaction in the KTaO₃ heterointerface superconductors, and brings a new broad of perspective on understanding non-trivial superconducting properties at the artificial heterointerfaces.

Development of pulsed magnetic field assisted supersonic plasma spraying

This study designs a pulsed magnetic field assisted supersonic plasma spraying (PM-SPS) device. The instrument is divided into magnetic field generation and spraying modules, and they are connected by a dual control system and professional fixture. The PM-SPS system is simple to operate and has no contact with the spraying process. In addition, it can achieve high field intensity and stable pulse frequency in a short time. It has a strengthening effect on the whole coating forming process. The porosity, roughness, hardness, and tribological properties of the coatings prepared using the PM-SPS system were improved. The reported experiments and results can be generalized to other coating applications, which require high quality surfaces.

Fourfold Symmetric Superconductivity in Spinel Oxide LiTi2O4(001) Thin Films

The charge frustration with the mixed-valence state inherent to LiTi₂O₄, which is found to be the only oxide superconductor with spinel structure, is the impetus for paying special attention to unveil the underlying intriguing superconducting properties. Here, we report a pronounced fourfold rotational symmetry of the superconductivity in high-quality single-crystalline LiTi₂O₄(001) thin films. Both the magnetoresistivity and upper critical field under an applied magnetic field manifest striking fourfold oscillations deep inside the superconducting state, whereas the anisotropy vanishes in the normal state, demonstrating that it is an intrinsic property of the superconducting phase. We attribute this behavior to the unconventional d-wave superconducting Cooper pairs with the irreducible representation of E_g protected by the O_h point group in cubic LiTi₂O₄. Our findings show the nontrivial character of the pairing interaction in a three-dimensional spinel oxide superconductor.

Two-Dimensional Superconductivity at the Titanium Sesquioxide Heterointerface

The study of exotic superconductivity in two dimensions has been a central theme in the solid state and materials research communities. Experimentally exploring and identifying exotic, fascinating interface superconductors with a high transition temperature (T_c) are challenging. Here, we report an experimental observation of intriguing two-dimensional superconductivity with a T_c of up to 3.8 K at the interface between a Mott insulator Ti₂O₃ and polar semiconductor GaN. At the verge of superconductivity, we also observe a striking quantum metallic-like state, demonstrating that it is a precursor to the two-dimensional superconductivity as the temperature is decreased. Our work shows an exciting opportunity to exploit the underlying, emergent quantum phenomena at the heterointerfaces via heterostructure engineering.
