Dual-Redox System of Metallo-Supramolecular Polymers for Visible-to-Near-IR Modulable Electrochromism and Durable Device Fabrication

Rational Design of Fluorinated 2D Polymer Film Based on Donor-Accepter Architecture toward Multilevel Memory Device for Neuromorphic Computing

Fluorine-containing 2D polymer (F-2DP) film is a desired system to regulate the charge transport in organic electronics but rather rarely reports due to the limited fluorine-containing building blocks and difficulties in synthesis. Herein, a novel polar molecule with antiparallel columnar stacking is synthesized and further embedded into an F-2DP system to control over the crystallinity of F-2DP film through self-complementary π-electronic forces. The donor-accepter-accepter'-donor' (D-A-A'-D') structure regulates the charge transportation efficiently, inducing multilevel memory behavior through stepwise charge capture and transfer processes. Thus, the device exhibits ternary memory behavior with low threshold voltage (Vth1 of 1.1 V, Vth2 of 2.0 V), clearly distinguishable resistance states (1:102:104) and ternary yield (83%). Furthermore, the stepwise formation of the charge complex endows the device with a wider range to regulate the conductive state, which allows its application in brain-inspired neuromorphic computing. Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology recognition can reach an accuracy of 86%, showing great potential in neuromorphic computing applications in the post-Moore era.

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Mononuclear or Coordination Polymer Complexes? Both Are Possible for 3,6,9-Trioxaundecanedioic Acid

Investigating the driving forces leading to the formation of a specific supramolecular architecture among a wide spectrum of all the possibly obtainable structures is not an easy task. The contemporary literature provides several models for correctly predicting the thermodynamically accessible structures that can originate from a library of building blocks. Definitions are rigid by their very nature, so their application may sometimes require a shift in perspective. In the study presented herein, we describe the crystal structures of three metallo-supramolecular architectures assembled from deprotonated derivatives of 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid and Mn(II), Co(II) and Zn(II). In the Mn(II) case, the complexation resulted in a complex of a discrete/heptacoordinated nature, whereas the other two structures appeared as helical polymers. To explain such an anomaly, in this work, we describe how the interplay between the flexibility of the ligand spacer and the number of coordinating atoms involved determines the divergent or convergent organisation of the final coordination architecture.

Reversible Electrochromic/Electrofluorochromic Dual Switching in Zn(II)-Based Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer Films

The introduction of novel materials with multifunctional chromogenic properties, such as electrochromic/electrofluorochromic (EC/EFC) properties, has recently attracted prospective interest in the development of various optoelectronic devices and smart windows. In this study, a novel Zn(II)-based metallo-supramolecular polymer (polyZn) has been developed as an ON/OFF switchable EFC application with prominent EC behavior. In this regard, the polymeric chain of polyZn was first synthesized by 1:1 complexation in a zigzag manner with Zn(II) ions at the metal center and 4,4'-[bis(2,2':6',2″-terpyridinyl)benzene]triphenylamine (LTPY-TPA) as the redox-active ditopic ligand. The polyZn exhibits excellent solubility in organic solvents and can form a very good uniform thin film on an indium tin oxide/glass substrate by spin-coating. In a neutral state, transparent polyZn exhibits a bright yellow color to the naked eye (absorption at ∼325 nm). The electroactive triphenylamine (TPA) core of LTPA-TPY, however, undergoes reversible single-electron oxidation when a positive bias of +1.6 V vs Ag/Ag+ is applied, generating radical cations (TPA ↔ TPA•+) with a significant drop in transparency (77%). A noticeable chromic shift in the hue of the film from brilliant yellow to green was observed with the appearance of a near-infrared absorption band at ∼897 nm with a tail of 1300-1600 nm. Interestingly, in addition to this EC phenomenon, the fabricated solid-state polyZn film exhibits intense, high-contrast reddish-orange photoluminescence with λem = 650 nm, which is significantly desired as a molecular probe for bioimaging. Both the TPA core and the redox-inactive Zn(II)-terpyridine core emit orange-red photoluminescence in polyZn, which is significantly quenched upon the oxidation of the film and is re-emitted at 0.0 V vs Ag/Ag+. This ON/OFF EFC transition was sustained for several cycles. This study should motivate to design and create distinctive new unique materials with combined EC/EFC behavior for the fabrication of optoelectronic devices by combining a metal-fluorescent core with a redox-active spacer.

Revealing nanomechanical deformation at the interface and degradation in all-thin-film inorganic electrochromic devices

Recently, progress in electrochromic (EC) devices has been made in optimizing electrode and device configurations and performance. However, the ion insertion/de-insertion induced charge transfer (CT) nanomechanical effect has remained unexplored, i.e., repetitive electrode size changes at the nanoscale and stress/strain generated during electrochemical cycling, which is the focus of this work due to its intimate correlation with the elastic and plastic deformation at the interface. Considering the intervalence electrons, excellent electrochemical kinetics, and dramatic color changes, tungsten oxide (WO₃) and nickel oxide (NiO) films are configured as the EC cathode and anode materials, respectively, within a full device. Upon extended cycles (>10 000), the void generation and delamination that occurred at the interface account for performance decay. Encouraged by the findings, nanoindentation mechanical tests and electrical kelvin probe force microscopy were employed to investigate the CT induced effects at the interface. There is a dramatic increase of up to 45% in the elastic Young's modulus in colored/charged WO₃ at ∼40 mC cm^-2. The correlation between CT and synergistic mechanical effect is interpreted by the Lippman equation. Interestingly, despite the charged state (colored; lithiated) with a relatively flat morphology bringing an ∼3.4 times higher electrostatic surface potential, the electrical work function unexpectedly decreases, arising from the dominant effect of the dipole layer potential over the chemical potential. The interatomic cohesive energy and equilibrium distance increase bury the seeds for mechanical deformation in the long run. This work provides fundamental insights into electro-chemo mechanics and interdisciplinary concerted interfacial effects at the nano/atomic level. The dependence of surface potential, stress, work function, and cohesive energy on electrochemical kinetics has been interpreted.

Metal-Terpyridine Assembled Functional Materials for Electrochromic, Catalytic and Environmental Applications

Molecular assembly induced by metal-terpyridine-based coordinative interactions has become an emergent research topic due to its ease of synthesis and diverse applications. This article highlights recent significant developments in the metal-terpyridine-based supramolecular architectures. At first, the design aspect of the molecular building blocks has been described, followed by elaboration on how the ligand backbone plays an important role for achieving different dimensionalities of the resulting assemblies which exhibit a wide range of potential applications. After that, we discussed different synthetic approaches for constructing these assemblies, and finally, we focused on their significant developments in three specific areas, viz., electrochromic materials, catalysis and a new application in wastewater treatment. In the field of electrochromic materials, these assemblies made important advancements in various aspects like sub-second switching time (<1 s), low switching voltage (<1 V), increased switching stability (>10000 cycles), tuning of multiple colors by using multimetallic systems, fabrication of charge storing electrochromic devices, utilizing and storing solar energy etc. Similarly, the catalysis field witnessed application of the metal-terpyridine assemblies in C-H monohalogenation, heterogeneous Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, photocatalysis, reduction of carbon dioxide, etc. Finally, the environmental application of these coordination assemblies includes capturing Cr(VI) from waste water efficiently with high capture capacity, good recyclability, wide pH independency etc.

Magenta-Blue Electrofluorochromic Device Incorporating Eu(III) Complex, Anthracene Derivative, and Viologen Molecule

Electrochemical switching of luminescence color between magenta and blue using two types of luminescent materials and electrochromic molecules was demonstrated based on the control of excited energy transfer through an electrochromic reaction. The magenta photoluminescence, due to the integration of red luminescence from the Eu(III) complex and blue fluorescence from the anthracene derivative, was reversibly modulated to a pure-blue luminescence color by an electrochemical redox reaction. Electrofluorochromism is induced by effective excited energy transfer from the Eu(III) complex to the electrochromic molecule under a redox reaction.

Understanding Diffusional Charge Transport within a Pyrene-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework

Electrochemically active hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) offer opportunities to study charge transport in supramolecular systems where the rate of movement of charges is dependent on weak electronic coupling between individual components. Here, we used potential-step chronoamperometric measurements on electrochemically active, drop-cast HOF-102 films to estimate both redox-hopping-based apparent diffusion coefficients for charge transport and rate constants for linker-to-linker charge transfer (hole transfer) in the mesoporous two-dimensional (2D) plane created by interlinker hydrogen bonding. Also present are one-dimensional columns formed by stacking pyrene units. However, because the HOF-102 crystallites containing these columns are oriented parallel to an underlying electrode, dynamics of charge transport (hole-transport) along the column axis, in contrast to the plane, are not directly probed by the electrochemical measurements. Furthermore, we employed electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to measure the electrical conductivity of the as-deposited films biased at various potentials. We found that both the neutral/singly oxidized and the singly oxidized/doubly oxidized pyrene linker redox couples of HOF-102 can engender hopping-based film conductivity within the 2D plane of HOF-102. Consistent with the radical cation and radical dication nature of the singly and doubly oxidized linkers, respectively, HOF-102 films are electrochromic. The measured values of in-plane charge-diffusion coefficients (∼10^-10 to 10^-11 cm² s^-1) and electrical conductivity (∼10^-6 to 10^-8 S cm^-1) compare favorably with those for related redox-conductive MOFs and suggest that the transport and conductivity parameters for HOF-102 are sufficiently large to support electrocatalysis by subsequently installed catalysts in films─specifically, films of micron or greater thickness, corresponding to the equivalent hundreds of monolayers of closely packed (i.e., face-to-face-packed) pyrene-derivatives, but with solution access (solvent, ion, and reactant access) still readily provided by channels oriented parallel to an underlying planar electrode.

Electrochromic behavior of fac-tricarbonyl rhenium complexes

Tricarbonyl rhenium complex shows good electrochromic performance with a colored stage of green, rapid response and good switching stability.

Pathway-Dependent Coordination Networks: Crystals versus Films

We demonstrate the formation of both metallo-organic crystals and nanoscale films that have entirely different compositions and structures despite using the same set of starting materials. This difference is the result of an unexpected cation exchange process. The reaction of an iron polypyridyl complex with a copper salt by diffusion of one solution into another resulted in iron-to-copper exchange, concurrent ligand rearrangement, and the formation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). This observation shows that polypyridyl complexes can be used as expendable precursors for the growth of MOFs. In contrast, alternative depositions of the iron polypyridyl complex with a copper salt by automated spin coating on conductive metal oxides resulted in the formation of electrochromic coatings, and the structure and redox properties of the iron complex were retained. The possibility to form such different networks from the same set of molecular building blocks by “in solution” versus “on surface” coordination chemistry broadens the synthetic space to design functional materials.

Toward Electrochromic Metallopolymers: Synthesis and Properties of Polyazomethines Based on Complexes of Transition-Metal Ions

The tridentate ligand L and its complexes with transition-metal ions have been prepared and characterized. The polycondensation reactions of transition-metal complexes with different dialdehydes led to the formation of transition-metal-complex-based polyazomethines, which have been obtained by on-substrate polymerization, and their electrochemical and electrochromic performance have been investigated. The most interesting properties are exhibited by polymers of Fe(II) and Cu(II) ions obtained by the reaction of the appropriate complexes with a triphenylamine-based dialdehyde. Fe(II) polymer P1 undergoes a reversible oxidation/reduction process and a color change from orange to gray due to the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) ions concomitant with the oxidation of the triphenylamine group. Its electrochromic properties such as long-term stability, switching times, and coloration efficiencies have been investigated, providing evidence of the utility of the on-substrate polycondensation reaction in the formation of thin films of electrochromic metallopolymers.

Post-Synthetic Color Tuning of the Ultra-Effective and Highly Stable Surface-Confined Electrochromic Monolayer: Shades of Green for Camouflage Materials

We report here on the strategy for the preparation of a series of electrochromic (EC) materials in green shades designed for camouflage purposes. This top-down post-synthetic modification provides access to new EC materials by fine modulation of the color of the surface-confined metalorganic monolayer pre-deposited on indium tin oxide screen-printed supports. Selective on-surface N-quaternization of the outer pyridine unit of the EC metal complex covalently embedded onto an enhanced surface area electrode results in a bathochromic shift of the absorbance signal as well as visual color change from blue to different shades of green. When assembled into solid-state EC devices (ECDs), the materials demonstrate high color differences between colored and bleached states and significant differences in optical density. Upon electrochemical switching, the ECDs initially featuring different shades of green become yellowish or clay. The accessible gamut of colors, fulfilling the requirements for chameleon-like camouflage materials, is able to mimic conditions of various natural environments including forests and sands. Notably, ECDs demonstrate high long-term durability (95% retention of the performance after 3300 cycles), fast coloration (0.6-1.1 s), and bleaching (1.2-3.3 s) times and outstanding coloration efficiencies of 1018-1513 cm²/C. Importantly, post-synthetic N-quaternization/color tuning does not deteriorate the performance of the resulting EC materials and devices as judged by cyclic voltammetry, spectroelectrochemistry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This work adds to the limited number of reports that explore color tuning of EC molecular layers via on-surface modification with the aim to access new non-symmetric materials. Notably, the facile and straightforward technology presented here allows the creation of green-colored EC materials that are difficult to prepare in other ways.

A PROXYL-Type Norbornene Polymer for High-Voltage Cathodes in Lithium Batteries

A newly designed radical polymer with a polynorbornene backbone and unsaturated derivative of tetramethylpyrrolidine 1-oxyl (PROXYL) as pendant groups displays reversible redox at 3.75 V (vs Li/Li⁺ ). The robust polymer design enables the high voltage while maintaining a promising cyclability (over 1000 cycles). The polymer is also beneficial as an additive to the regular lithium iron phosphate electrodes, where the quickly responding organic material facilitates the charging reactions catalytically.

Transmissive to blackish-green NIR electrochromism in a Co(II)-based interfacial co-ordination thin film

Herein, a Co(ii)-based metallo-polymer (Co-tpy-L) with a three armed non-conjugated terpyridine ligand is synthesized using solvent-solvent interfacial polymerization. The thin film exhibits durable transmissive-to-blackish green electrochromism, selectively covering both the visible and NIR regions with a moderate voltage range of -1.4 to 0 V.
