Recent advancements in polyurethane-based membranes for gas separation

Gas separation membranes are critical in a variety of environmental research and industrial applications. These membranes are designed to selectively allow some gases to flow while blocking others, allowing for the separation and purification of gases for a variety of applications. Therefore, the demand for fast and energy-efficient gas separation techniques is of central interest for many chemical and energy production diligences due to the intensified levels of greenhouse and industrial gases. This encourages the researchers to innovate techniques for capturing and separating these gases, including membrane separation techniques. Polymeric membranes play a significant role in gas separations by capturing gases from the fuel combustion process, purifying chemical raw material used for plastic production, and isolating pure and noncombustible gases. Polyurethane-based membrane technology offers an excellent knack for gas separation applications and has also been considered more energy-efficient than conventional phase change separation methodologies. This review article reveals a thorough delineation of the current developments and efforts made for PU membranes. It further explains its uses for the separation of valuable gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen (H2), nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), or a mixture of gases from a variety of gas spillages. Polyurethane (PU) is an excellent choice of material and a leading candidate for producing gas-separating membranes because of its outstanding chemical chemistry, good mechanical abilities, higher permeability, and variable microstructure. The presence of PU improves several characteristics of gas-separating membranes. Selectivity and separation efficiency of PU-centered membranes are enhanced through modifications such as blending with other polymers, use of nanoparticles (silica, metal oxides, alumina, zeolite), and interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) formation. This manuscript critically analyzes the various gas transport methods and selection criteria for the fabrication of PU membranes. It also covers the challenges facing the development of PU-membrane-based separation procedures.

Confinement-enhanced electrochemiluminescence by Ru(dcbpy)32+-functionalized γ-CD-MOF@COF-LZU1 porous hybrid material as micro-reactor for CYFRA 21-1 detection

The improvement of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) performance relies on the electron transfer efficiency between luminophore and coreactant. An ultrasensitive ECL micro-reactor with confinement-enhanced performance was prepared by using the covalent organic framework-LZU1-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF@COF-LZU1) as a platform to assemble enormous N,N-dibutyl-2-hydroxyethylamine (DBAE) and tris(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) [Ru(dcbpy)32+] into its pore channels. Compared to individual substances of γ-CD-MOF and COF-LZU1, the synergistic effects can conduce to the enhancement of the intensity, durability and sensitivity of the micro-reactor. Besides, COF-LZU1 can provide a mild environment to accommodate a certain amount of DBAE by concentrating them from the aqueous solution into its hydrophobic cavities and boost the oxidation efficiency of DBAE to generate more DBAE●+ and profited the survival of DBAE●, leading to an improved reaction efficiency with the Ru(dcbpy)32+ intermediate. Thanks to the confinement-enhanced strategy, engineered as high-functioning luminescent materials, Ru@γ-CD-MOF@COF-LZU1 micro-reactors decorated with Au NPs can facilitate electron transfer and capture primary antibodies (Ab1). Moreover, Au-Pd-Pt noble metal aerogels (NMAs) functionalized MoS2 NFs (Au-Pd-Pt NMAs@MoS2 NFs) were chosen as base material due to its large specific surface areas, high porosity, and excellent electrical conductivity. Based on above merits, the sensor demonstrated a sensitive response to CYFRA 21-1 detection in a linear concentration gradient from 10 fg/mL to 50 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.0055 pg/mL (S/N = 3). The COF-LZU1 decorated ECL micro-reactors were constructed based on the signal amplification strategies to realize accurate CYFRA 21-1 detection.

Alizarin-embedded γ-cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework in a methylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol film for maintaining and monitoring grass carp freshness

Multifunctional packaging films that monitor and maintain fish freshness hold significant potential for use in the food industry. This study introduces a multifunctional intelligent packaging film comprising alizarin (ALI)-embedded cubic γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (γ-CD-MOFs) (denoted as γ-CD-MOFs@ALI) in a methylcellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (MP)-based matrix to achieve colorimetric monitoring and enhanced preservation of fish freshness. The MP/γ-CD-MOFs@ALI reveals a rapid color transition in 3 min from yellow color progressively darkens to purple as the pH increases from 2.0 to 10.0. And it is proved that the as-prepared film owns high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (S. aureus), impressive ABTS+ radical scavenging rates of 85.54 ± 1.25 %, and effective ALI sustained-release properties. The intelligent packaging film exhibits an excellent colorimetric response to total volatile basic nitrogen and provides exceptional freshness preservation performance, effectively prolonging the shelf life of Ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp) under 25 °C to 42 h.

Micro and Nanoporous Membrane Platforms for Carbon Neutrality: Membrane Gas Separation Prospects

Recently, carbon neutrality has been promoted as a potentially practical solution to global CO2 emissions and increasing energy-consumption challenges. Many attempts have been made to remove CO2 from the environment to address climate change and rising sea levels owing to anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Herein, membrane technology is proposed as a suitable solution for carbon neutrality. This review aims to comprehensively evaluate the currently available scientific research on membranes for carbon capture, focusing on innovative microporous material membranes used for CO2 separation and considering their material, chemical, and physical characteristics and permeability factors. Membranes from such materials comprise metal-organic frameworks, zeolites, silica, porous organic frameworks, and microporous polymers. The critical obstacles related to membrane design, growth, and CO2 capture and usage processes are summarized to establish novel membranes and strategies and accelerate their scaleup.

Cyclodextrin-metal-organic frameworks in molecular delivery, detection, separation, and capture: An updated critical review

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are coordination compounds with tuneable structures and controllable functions. However, the biological toxicity of traditional MOFs materials is often inevitable, making their application in the biological field have many limitations. Therefore, frontier research increasingly focuses on developing biocompatible MOFs materials. Cyclodextrins (CDs), derived from starch, are favored by various biomaterials due to their good biosafety and are often seen in the preparation and application of MOFs materials. This review describes the features of MOFs materials, and the various preparation methods of CD-MOFs are analyzed in detail from the perspective of CD classification. Additionally, the promising applications of CD-MOFs materials for delivery, detection, separation, and capture of active molecules in recent studies are systematically discussed and summarized. In terms of safety, the CD-MOFs materials are meticulously summarized. Finally, this review presents the challenges and future prospects regarding the current CD-MOFs-based materials, which will shed new light on the application of such materials in various fields.

Surface, Interface and Structure Optimization of Metal-Organic Frameworks: Towards Efficient Resourceful Conversion of Industrial Waste Gases

Industrial waste gas emissions from fossil fuel over-exploitation have aroused great attention in modern society. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed in the capture and catalytic conversion of industrial exhaust gases such as SO₂ , H₂ S, NO_x , CO₂ , CO, etc. Based on these resourceful conversion applications, in this review, we summarize the crucial role of the surface, interface, and structure optimization of MOFs for performance enhancement. The main points include (1) adsorption enhancement of target molecules by surface functional modification, (2) promotion of catalytic reaction kinetics through enhanced coupling in interfaces, and (3) adaptive matching of guest molecules by structural and pore size modulation. We expect that this review will provide valuable references and illumination for the design and development of MOF and related materials with excellent exhaust gas treatment performance.

Large-Scale Screening and Machine Learning for Metal–Organic Framework Membranes to Capture CO2 from Flue Gas

To combat global warming, as an energy-saving technology, membrane separation can be applied to capture CO₂ from flue gas. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with characteristics like high porosity have great potential as membrane materials for gas mixture separation. In this work, through a combination of grand canonical Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, the permeability of three gases (CO₂, N₂, and O₂) was calculated and estimated in 6013 computation–ready experimental MOF membranes (CoRE–MOFMs). Then, the relationship between structural descriptors and permeance performance, and the importance of available permeance area to permeance performance of gas molecules with smaller kinetic diameters were found by univariate analysis. Furthermore, comparing the prediction accuracy of seven classification machine learning algorithms, XGBoost was selected to analyze the order of importance of six structural descriptors to permeance performance, through which the conclusion of the univariate analysis was demonstrated one more time. Finally, seven promising CoRE-MOFMs were selected, and their structural characteristics were analyzed. This work provides explicit directions and powerful guidelines to experimenters to accelerate the research on membrane separation for the purification of flue gas.

Cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks and derivatives: recent developments and applications

While there is a tremendous amount of scientific research on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for gas storage/separation, catalysis and energy storage, the development and application of biocompatible MOFs still poses major challenges. In general, they can be synthesised from various biocompatible linkers and metal ions but particularly cyclodextrins (CDs) as cyclic oligosaccharides are an astute choice for the former. Although the field of CD-MOF materials is still in the early stages and their design and fabrication comes with many hurdles, the benefits coming from CDs built in a porous framework are exciting. Versatile host-guest complexation abilities, high encapsulation capacity and hydrophilicity are among the valuable properties inherent to CDs and offer extended and novel applications to MOFs. In this review, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art synthesis, design, properties and applications of these materials. Initially, a rationale for the preparation of CD-based MOFs is provided, based on the chemical and structural properties of CDs and including their advantages and disadvantages. Further on, the review exhaustively surveys CD-MOF based materials by categorising them into three sub-classes, namely (i) CD-MOFs, (ii) CD-MOF hybrids, obtained via combination with external materials, and (iii) CD-MOF-derived materials prepared under pyrolytic conditions. Subsequently, CD-based MOFs in practical applications, such as drug delivery and cancer therapy, sensors, gas storage, (enantiomer) separations, electrical devices, food industry, and agriculture, are discussed. We conclude by summarizing the state of the art in the field and highlighting some promising future developments of CD-MOFs.

Improvement of curcumin loading into a nanoporous functionalized poor hydrolytic stable metal-organic framework for high anticancer activity against human gastric cancer AGS cells

Two low water-stable nanoporous Zn-based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) with and without the NO₂-functional group were synthesized by the reflux method and used to encapsulate curcumin (CCM). The characterization and application of these Zn-based MOFs (DMOF-1 and DMOF-1-NO₂) have been studied by FT-IR, PXRD,¹H NMR, N₂ adsorption, SEM, UV-vis, and fluorescence microscopy methods. The amount of drug loading of DMOF-1 and DMOF-1-NO₂ is 22.4 and 28.3 wt%, respectively. The drug loading results were also investigated by the computational simulation method. These kinds of MOFs have poor stability against water. This instability was used as a key to solving the problem of the low solubility of CCM as a model of hydrophobic cancer drug in a water-based medium. The obtained results confirmed that these poor hydrolytic MOFs could improve the solubility of CCM and enhance cytotoxicity against cancer cells (AGS) in comparison with free CCM. These results can prepare a new opportunity to increase the anticancer activity of hydrophobic drugs.

Water-Dispersible Nanocatalysts with Engineered Structures: The New Generation of Nanomaterials for Energy-Efficient CO2 Capture

The high energy demand of CO₂ absorption-desorption technologies has significantly inhibited their industrial utilization and implementation of the Paris Climate Accord. Catalytic solvent regeneration is of considerable interest due to its low operating temperature and high energy efficiency. Of the catalysts available, heterogeneous catalysts have exhibited relatively poor performances and are hindered by other challenges, which have slowed their large-scale deployment. Herein, we report a facile and eco-friendly approach for synthesizing water-dispersible Fe₃O₄ nanocatalysts coated with a wide range of amino acids (12 representative molecules) in aqueous media. The acidic properties of water-dispersible nanocatalysts can be easily tuned by introducing different functional groups during the hydrothermal synthesis procedure. We demonstrate that the prepared nanocatalysts can be used in energy-efficient CO₂ capture plants with ease-of-use, at very low concentrations (0.1 wt %) and with extra-high efficiencies (up to ∼75% energy reductions). They can be applied in a range of solutions, including amino acids (i.e., short-chain, long-chain, and cyclic) and amines (i.e., primary, tertiary, and primary-tertiary mixture). Considering the superiority of the presented water-dispersible nanocatalysts, this technology is expected to provide a new pathway for the development of energy-efficient CO₂ capture technologies.

Recent Advances of Porous Materials Based on Cyclodextrin

Porous materials have attracted significant attention because of their rising applications in many fields. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are suitable building units in the fabrication of porous materials owing to their intrinsic nanoporous structure, easy modification, and biocompatibility, which may result in the formation of CD-based organic frameworks (including cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs) and cyclodextrin covalent organic frameworks (CD-COFs)), and CD-based polymer hybrid porous materials. This review focuses on the recent progress in the fabrication and applications of CD-based porous materials with novel structures and functionalities.
