Fe(Co)OOH Dynamically Stable Interface Based on Self-Sacrificial Reconstruction for Long-Term Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Fine-tuning nanoflower-like Fe/Co hybrids with high content oxyhydroxide accelerating oxygen evolution kinetics

Iron hydroxide (FeOOH) is a potential active component in iron-based electrocatalysts for water electrolysis. However, its catalytic performance is constrained by its slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Herein, we synthesized a nanoflower-like FeCo-hydro(oxy)oxides composite with tunable Fe/Co ratios (Fex-Coy) on nickel foam (NF) via a one-step electrodeposition technique. This method allows for precise control over the morphology and composition of the hybrid nanoflowers. The optimized Fe9-Co1 discloses favorable OER performance with a low overpotential of 222 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and demonstrates good stability exceeding 60 h at 10 mA cm-2. Further, an assembled Fe9-Co1(+)||Pt/C(-) dual-electrode configuration achieves a low cell voltage of 1.73 V at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 for water splitting, with long-term stability for 70 h and minimal degradation. Studies indicate that the distinctive nanoflower morphology of Fe9-Co1 enhances active site exposure, while both FeOOH and reconstructed CoOOH serve as catalytic centers, contributing to the observed OER performance. This work introduces a facile approach for synthesizing OER electrocatalysts, underscoring the role of the high-valence state of Fe/Co as active sites in the OER process.

Dynamically Stabilized Electronic Regulation and Electrochemical Reconstruction in Co and S Atomic Pair Doped Fe3 O4 for Water Oxidation

The electronic regulation and surface reconstruction of earth-abundant electrocatalysts are essential to efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, an inverse-spinel Co,S atomic pair codoped Fe3 O4 grown on iron foam (Co,S-Fe3 O4 /IF) is fabricated as a cost-effective electrocatalyst for OER. This strategy of Co and S atomic pair directional codoping features accelerates surface reconstruction and dynamically stabilizes electronic regulation. CoS atomic pairs doped in the Fe3 O4 crystal favor controllable surface reconstruction via sulfur leaching, forming oxygen vacancies and Co doping on the surface of reconstructed FeOOH (Co-FeOOH-Ov /IF). Before and after surface reconstruction via in situ electrochemical process, the Fe sites with octahedral field dynamically maintains an appropriate electronic structure for OER intermediates, thus exhibiting consistently excellent OER performance. The electrochemically tuned Fe-based electrodes exhibit a low overpotential of 349 mV at a current density of 1000 mA cm-2 , a slight Tafel slope of 43.3 mV dec-1 , and exceptional long-term electrolysis stability of 200 h in an alkaline medium. Density functional theory calculations illustrate the electronic regulation of Fe sites, changes in Gibbs free energies, and the breaking of the restrictive scaling relation between OER intermediates. This work provides a promising directional codoping strategy for developing precatalysts for large-scale water-splitting systems.

Cauliflower-like NiFe alloys anchored on a flake iron nickel carbonate hydroxide heterostructure towards superior overall water and urea electrolysis

Exploring efficient, stable and multifunctional Earth-rich electrocatalysts is vital for hydrogen generation. Hence, an efficient heterostructure consisting of cauliflower-like NiFe alloys anchored on flake iron nickel carbonate hydroxide which is supported on carbon cloth (NiFe/NiFeCH/CC) was synthesized as a trifunctional electrocatalyst for efficient hydrogen production by overall water and urea splitting. While optimizing and regulating the ratio of Ni to Fe, benefiting from the special morphology and synergistic effect between the NiFe alloy and NiFeCH, the NiFe/NiFeCH/CC heterostructure exhibits outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with a low overpotential of 190 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 after a stability test for 150 h. Notably, when the NiFe/NiFeCH/CC heterostructure is used as both the anode and cathode simultaneously, it merely requires a cell voltage of 1.49 V for the overall water splitting and 1.39 V for urea electrolysis at 10 mA cm^-2 with excellent durability. Thus, this work not just provides the application of NiFe-based catalysts in overall water splitting, but also offers a viable method for the treatment of urea-rich wastewater.

Self-sacrificial reconstruction of MoO42- intercalated NiFe LDH/Co2P heterostructures enabling interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies for triggering oxygen evolution reaction

Exploring high-efficiency electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most important concerns to produce hydrogen in water electrolysis. Herein, the FNM/Co2P-0.4 heterostructure was designed as an electrocatalyst for the OER process by the combination of MoO42- intercalating NiFe LDH and Co2P on nickel foam (NF). The surface reconstruction and MoO42- leaching can induce the conversion of Co2P and NiFe LDH on FNM/Co2P-0.4 to generate Co/NiOOH with more oxygen vacancies. Beyond, CoOOH and NiOOH can also synergize to reduce the energy barrier of OER, optimize conductivity, and improve stability. The surface reconstruction and the formation of OOH⁎ were further unveiled by in-situ UV-vis absorption spectra and Fourier-transformed alternative current voltammetry (FTACV). The integration of interfacial synergies and oxygen vacancies can facilitate the adsorption/desorption of intermediates, regulate the d-band center, and expose more active sites. And as a result, FNM/Co2P-0.4 shows a significant low overpotential (240 mV) at 50 mA cm-2, a small Tafel (74 mV dec-1), low activation energy (Ea) and remarkable durability. This work provides a new pathway to improve the OER performance by using interfacial synergies and rich oxygen vacancies derived from the self-sacrificial reconstruction of heterostructured electrocatalysts.

Active Microstructure Transformation and Enhanced Stability of Iron Foam Derived from Industrial Water Oxidation

Tracking microstructure transformation under industrial conditions is significant and urgent for the development of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, employing iron foam (IF) as an object, we closely monitor related morphologies and composition evolution under 300 mA cm^-2 at 40 °C (IF-40-t)/80 °C (IF-80-t) in 6 M KOH and find that the OER activity first increases and then decreases with the continuous generation of FeOOH. Moreover, the reasons for different tendencies of Tafel slope, double-layer capacitance, and impedance for IF-40-t/IF-80-t have been investigated thoroughly. In detail, the OER activity of IF-40-t is governed by electron and mass transport, while for IF-80-t, the dominating factor is electron transfer. Further, to improve the stability, guided by the above results, two versatile methods that do not sacrifice electron and mass transport have been proposed: surface coating and dynamic interface construction. The synchronous improvements of stability and activity are deeply revealed, which may provide inspiration for catalyst design for industrial applications.

Self-healing oxygen evolution catalysts

Electrochemical and photoelectrochemical water splitting offers a scalable approach to producing hydrogen from renewable sources for sustainable energy storage. Depending on the applications, oxygen evolution catalysts (OECs) may perform water splitting under a variety of conditions. However, low stability and/or activity present challenges to the design of OECs, prompting the design of self-healing OECs composed of earth-abundant first-row transition metal oxides. The concept of self-healing catalysis offers a new tool to be employed in the design of stable and functionally active OECs under operating conditions ranging from acidic to basic solutions and from a variety of water sources.
