Layered Double Hydroxide Quantum Dots for Use in a Bifunctional Separator of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Synergistic restriction of polysulfides enabled by cobalt@carbon spheres embedded CNTs: A facile approach for constructing sulfur cathodes with high sulfur content

Despite the bright fortune of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries as one of the next-generation energy storage systems owing to the ultrahigh theoretical energy density and earth-abundance of sulfur, crucial challenges including polysulfide shuttling and low sulfur content of sulfur cathodes need to be overcome before the commercial survival of sulfur cathodes. Herein, cobalt/carbon spheres embedded CNTs (Co-C-CNTs) are rationally designed as multifunctional hosts to synergistically address the drawbacks of sulfur cathodes. The host is synthesized by a facile pyrolysis using Co(OH)2 template and followed with the controllable etching process. The hierarchical porous structure owning high pore volume and surface area can buffer the volume change, physically confine polysulfides, and provide conductive networks. Besides, partially remained metallic cobalt nanoparticles are favorable for chemical adsorption and conversion of polysulfides, as validated by density functional theory simulations. With the combination of above merits, the S@Co-C-CNTs cathodes with a high sulfur content of 80 wt% present a superior initial capacity (1568 mAh g-1 at 0.1C) with ultrahigh 93.6% active material utilization, and excellent rate performance (649 mAh g-1 at 2C), providing feasible strategies for the optimization of cathodes in metal-sulfur batteries.

Versatile Separators Toward Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: Status, Recent Progress, Challenges and Perspective

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have recently gained extensive attention due to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, serious shuttle effect and uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites restrict them from further commercial applications. As "the third electrode", functional separators are of equal significance as both anodes and cathodes in LSBs. The challenges mentioned above are effectively addressed with rational design and optimization in separators, thereby enhancing their reversible capacities and cycle stability. The review discusses the status/operation mechanism of functional separators, then primarily focuses on recent research progress in versatile separators with purposeful modifications for LSBs, and summarizes the methods and characteristics of separator modification, including heterojunction engineering, single atoms, quantum dots, and defect engineering. From the perspective of the anodes, distinct methods to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites by modifying the separator are discussed. Modifying the separators with flame retardant materials or choosing a solid electrolyte is expected to improve the safety of LSBs. Besides, in-situ techniques and theoretical simulation calculations are proposed to advance LSBs. Finally, future challenges and prospects of separator modifications for next-generation LSBs are highlighted. We believe that the review will be enormously essential to the practical development of advanced LSBs.

Manipulating Sulfur Conversion Kinetics through Interfacial Built-In Electric Field Enhanced Bidirectional Mott-Schottky Electrocatalysts in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Efficient electrocatalysts and catalytic mechanisms remain a pressing need in Li-S electrochemistry to address lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling and enhance conversion kinetics. This study presents the development of multifunctional VO2@rGO heterostructures, incorporating interfacial built-in electric field (BIEF) enhancement, as a Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst for Li-S batteries. Electrochemical experiments and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the interfacial BIEF between VO2 and rGO induces self-driven charge redistribution, resulting in accelerated charge transport rates, enhanced LiPS chemisorption, reduced energy barriers for Li2S nucleation/decomposition, and improved Li-ion diffusion behavior. The Mott-Schottky electrocatalyst, combining the strengths of VO2's anchoring ability, rGO's metallic conductivity, and BIEF's optimized charge transport, exhibits an outstanding "trapping-conversion" effect. The modified Li-S battery with a VO2@rGO-modified separator achieves a highly reversible capacity of 558.0 mAh g-1 at 2 C over 600 cycles, with an average decay rate of 0.048% per cycle. This research offers valuable insights into the design of Mott-Schottky electrocatalysts and their catalytic mechanisms, advancing high-efficiency Li-S batteries and other multielectron energy storage and conversion devices.

Interface Engineering Toward Expedited Li2 S Deposition in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries: A Critical Review

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with superior energy density are among the most promising candidates of next-generation energy storage techniques. As the key step contributing to 75% of the overall capacity, Li₂ S deposition remains a formidable challenge for LSBs applications because of its sluggish kinetics. The severe kinetic issue originates from the huge interfacial impedances, indicative of the interface-dominated nature of Li₂ S deposition. Accordingly, increasing efforts have been devoted to interface engineering for efficient Li₂ S deposition, which has attained inspiring success to date. However, a systematic overview and in-depth understanding of this critical field are still absent. In this review, the principles of interface-controlled Li₂ S precipitation are presented, clarifying the pivotal roles of electrolyte-substrate and electrolyte-Li₂ S interfaces in regulating Li₂ S depositing behavior. For the optimization of the electrolyte-substrate interface, efforts on the design of substrates including metal compounds, functionalized carbons, and organic compounds are systematically summarized. Regarding the regulation of electrolyte-Li₂ S interface, the progress of applying polysulfides catholytes, redox mediators, and high-donicity/polarity electrolytes is overviewed in detail. Finally, the challenges and possible solutions aiming at optimizing Li₂ S deposition are given for further development of practical LSBs. This review would inspire more insightful works and, more importantly, may enlighten other electrochemical areas concerning heterogeneous deposition processes.

Solid/Quasi-Solid Phase Conversion of Sulfur in Lithium-Sulfur Battery

The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is considered as one of the most promising options because the redox couple has almost the highest theoretical specific energy (2600 Wh kg^-1 ) among all solid anode-cathode candidates for rechargeable batteries. The "solid-liquid-solid" mechanism has become a dominating phase transformation process since it was first reported, although this cathode mode suffers from a tough "shuttle" phenomenon due to the dissolution of the soluble intermediate polysulfides generated during the charging-discharging process, which causes rapid loss of energy-bearing material and shortened lifespan. For decades, tremendous efforts have been made to restrict the shuttle effect. Changing sulfur conversion to "solid-solid" mode or "quasi-solid" mode, which successfully exceed the limit of the dissolution of the intermediates, and may address the root of the problem. In this review, the main focus is on the fundamental chemistry of the "solid-solid" and "quasi-solid" phase transformation of the sulfur cathode. First, the strategies of sulfur immobilization in "solid-liquid-solid" multi-phase conversions as well as the pivotal influence factors for the electrochemical conversion process are briefly introduced. Then, the different routes are summarized to realize the "solid-solid" and "quasi-solid" redox mechanisms. Finally, a perspectives on building high-energy-density Li-S batteries are provided.

Trifunctional Graphene Quantum Dot@LDH Integrated Nanoprobes for Visualization Therapy of Gastric Cancer

Visualization technology has become a trend in tumor therapy in recent years. The superior optical properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) make them suitable candidates for tumor diagnosis, but their tumor targeting and drug-carrying capacities are still not ideal for treatment. Sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (SGQDs) with stable fluorescence are prepared in a previous study. A reliable strategy by associating layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and etoposide (VP16) is designed for precise visualization therapy. Trifunctional LDH@SGQD-VP16 integrated nanoprobes can simultaneously achieve targeted aggregation, fluorescence visualization, and chemotherapy. LDH@SGQD-VP16 can accumulate in the tumor microenvironment, owing to pH-sensitive properties and long-term photostability in vivo, which can provide a basis for cancer targeting, real-time imaging, and effect tracking. The enhanced therapeutic and attenuated side effects of VP16 are demonstrated, and the apoptosis caused by LDH@SGQD-VP16 is ≈2.7 times higher than that of VP16 alone, in HGC-27 cells. This work provides a theoretical and experimental basis for LDH@SGQD-VP16 as a potential multifunctional agent for visualization therapy of gastric cancer.
