Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural over the Co-Based Catalyst: A Subtle Synergy with Ni and Zn Dopants

Lattice Strain Engineering on Metal-Organic Frameworks by Ligand Doping to Boost the Electrocatalytic Biomass Valorization

As an efficient and environmental-friendly strategy, electrocatalytic oxidation can realize biomass lignin valorization by cleaving its aryl ether bonds to produce value-added chemicals. However, the complex and polymerized structure of lignin presents challenges in terms of reactant adsorption on the catalyst surface, which hinders further refinement. Herein, NiCo-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as the electrocatalyst to enhance the adsorption of reactant molecules through π-π interaction. More importantly, lattice strain is introduced into the MOFs via curved ligand doping, which enables tuning of the d-band center of metal active sites to align with the reaction intermediates, leading to stronger adsorption and higher electrocatalytic activity toward bond cleavage within lignin model compounds and native lignin. When 2'-phenoxyacetophenone is utilized as the model compound, high yields of phenol (76.3%) and acetophenone (21.7%) are achieved, and the conversion rate of the reactants reaches 97%. Following pre-oxidation of extracted poplar lignin, >10 kinds of phenolic compounds are received using the as-designed MOFs electrocatalyst, providing ≈12.48% of the monomer, including guaiacol, vanillin, eugenol, etc., and p-hydroxybenzoic acid dominates all the products. This work presents a promising and deliberately designed electrocatalyst for realizing lignin valorization, making significant strides for the sustainability of this biomass resource.

Regulation of Redox Molecular Junctions in Covalent Organic Frameworks for H2 O2 Photosynthesis Coupled with Biomass Valorization

H2 O2 photosynthesis coupled with biomass valorization can not only maximize the energy utilization but also realize the production of value-added products. Here, a series of COFs (i.e. Cu3 -BT-COF, Cu3 -pT-COF and TFP-BT-COF) with regulated redox molecular junctions have been prepared to study H2 O2 photosynthesis coupled with furfuryl alcohol (FFA) photo-oxidation to furoic acid (FA). The FA generation efficiency of Cu3 -BT-COF was found to be 575 mM g-1 (conversion ≈100 % and selectivity >99 %) and the H2 O2 production rate can reach up to 187 000 μM g-1 , which is much higher than Cu3 -pT-COF, TFP-BT-COF and its monomers. As shown by theoretical calculations, the covalent coupling of the Cu cluster and the thiazole group can promote charge transfer, substrate activation and FFA dehydrogenation, thus boosting both the kinetics of H2 O2 production and FFA photo-oxidation to increase the efficiency. This is the first report about COFs for H2 O2 photosynthesis coupled with biomass valorization, which might facilitate the exploration of porous-crystalline catalysts in this field.

Enhancing the catalytic performance of Co-N-C derived from ZIF-67 by mesoporous silica encapsulation for chemoselective hydrogenation of furfural

Developing Cr-free and non-noble metal catalysts with high activity, selectivity and durability for chemoselective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol is highly desirable yet challenging. In this study, we design a hollow mesoporous Co-N-C@mSiO₂ nanostructure derived from ZIF-67 via the encapsulation-pyrolysis strategy. The Co-N-C@mSiO₂ catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the furfural hydrogenation towards furfuryl alcohol with good stability, and is much better than the Co-N-C catalyst originating from plain ZIF-67 and other reported transition metal catalysts. Characterization methods and control experiments show that Co-N_x species rather than Co metal should be catalytically active sites for the above reaction. The enhanced performance is associated with abundant Co-N_x active sites, good mass transport, and the SiO₂ shell protection. This work provides a novel and facile strategy for preparing highly efficient non-precious metal catalysts to replace Cr-based and noble metal catalysts for furfural hydrogenation.

Ultrahigh Metal Content Carbon-Based Catalyst for Efficient Hydrogenation of Furfural: The Regulatory Effect of Glycerol

The development of high-content non-noble metal nanocatalysts is important for multiphase catalysis applications. However, it is a challenge to solve the agglomeration in the preparation of high-content metal catalysts. In this paper, a carbon-based catalyst (Co@CN-G-600) with 71.28 wt % cobalt metal content was prepared using a new strategy of gas-phase carbon coating assisted by glycerol. The core of this strategy is to maintain the spacing of metallic cobalt by continuous replenishment of dissociated ligands during pyrolysis over gas-phase glycerol. This approach is also applicable to other non-noble metals. When Co@CN-G-600 was further used as a catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to prepare furfuryl alcohol (FOL), the yield of FOL was >99.9% under mild conditions of 80 °C, compared to only 8.23% catalytic yield at up to 130 °C for Co@CN-600 without glycerol. The excellent catalytic performance mainly lies in the fact that the introduction of glycerol modulates the size effect, electronic effect, and acidic site intensity of the high-content Co catalyst, which promotes the activation of FF and hydrogen. Meanwhile, the optimized specific surface area and pore structure by glycerol improve the accessibility of high-density active sites and promote more efficient mass transfer. In addition, the introduction of glycerol produced a graphitic carbon layer encapsulation structure relative to Co@CN-600, which substantially improved the cycling stability of the catalyst. This study resolves the paradox of high content and high dispersion of non-noble metal catalysts in the synthesis process and provides a general pathway and example for the preparation of stable high-content metal catalysts.

Cooperative Coupling of H2 O2 Production and Organic Synthesis over a Floatable Polystyrene-Sphere-Supported TiO2 /Bi2 O3 S-Scheme Photocatalyst

Cooperative coupling of photocatalytic H₂ O₂ production with organic synthesis has an expansive perspective in converting solar energy into storable chemical energy. However, traditional powder photocatalysts suffer from severe agglomeration, limited light absorption, poor gas reactant accessibility, and reusable difficulty, which greatly hinders their large-scale application. Herein, floatable composite photocatalysts are synthesized by immobilizing hydrophobic TiO₂ and Bi₂ O₃ on lightweight polystyrene (PS) spheres via hydrothermal and photodeposition methods. The floatable photocatalysts are not only solar transparent, but also upgrade the contact between reactants and photocatalysts. Thus, the floatable step-scheme (S-scheme) TiO₂ /Bi₂ O₃ photocatalyst exhibits a drastically enhanced H₂ O₂ yield of 1.15 mm h^-1 and decent furfuryl alcohol conversion to furoic acid synchronously. Furthermore, the S-scheme mechanism and dynamics are systematically investigated by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectrum analyses. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations reveal the mechanism of furoic acid evolution. The ingenious design of floatable photocatalysts not only furnishes insight into maximizing photocatalytic reaction kinetics but also provides a new route for highly efficient heterogeneous catalysis.

Effect of Co-Doping on Cu/CaO Catalysts for Selective Furfural Hydrogenation into Furfuryl Alcohol

Cu/CaO catalysts with fine-tuned Co-doping for excellent catalytic performance of furfural (FAL) hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol (FOL) were synthesized by a facile wetness impregnation method. The optimal Co_1.40Cu₁/CaO catalyst, with a Co to Cu mole ratio of 1.40:1, exhibited a 100% FAL conversion with a FOL yield of 98.9% at 100 °C and 20 bar H₂ pressure after 4 h. As gained from catalyst characterizations, Co addition could facilitate the reducibility of the CoCu system. Metallic Cu, Co-Cu alloys, and oxide species with CaO, acting as the major active components for the reaction, were formed after reduction at 500 °C. Additionally, this combination of Co and Cu elements could result in an improvement of catalyst textures when compared with the bare CaO. Smaller catalyst particles were formed after the addition of Co into Cu species. It was found that the addition of Co to Cu on the CaO support could fine-tune the appropriate acidic and basic sites to boost the FOL yield and selectivity with suppression of undesired products. These observations could confirm that the high efficiency and selectivity are mainly attributed to the synergistic effect between the catalytically active Co-Cu species and the CaO basic sites. Additionally, the FAL conversion and FOL yield insignificantly changed throughout the third consecutive run, confirming a high stability of the developed Co_1.40Cu₁/CaO catalyst.

In Situ Construction of a Co/ZnO@C Heterojunction Catalyst for Efficient Hydrogenation of Biomass Derivative under Mild Conditions

The efficient hydrogenation of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) to value-added γ-valerolactone (GVL) based on nonprecious metal catalysts under mild conditions is crucial challenge because of the intrinsic inactivity and instability of these catalysts. Herein, a series of highly active and stable carbon-encapsulated Co/ZnO@C-X (where X = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, the molar ratios of Zn/(Co+Zn)) heterojunction catalysts were obtained by in situ pyrolysis of bimetal CoZn MOF-74. The optimal Co/ZnO@C-0.3 catalyst could achieve 100% conversion of LA and 98.35% selectivity to GVL under mild conditions (100 °C, 5 bar, 3 h), which outperformed most of the state-of-the-art catalysts reported so far. Detailed characterizations, experimental investigations, and theoretical calculations revealed that the interfacial interaction between Co and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) could promote the dispersibility and air stability of the active Co⁰ for the activation of H₂. Moreover, the strong Co-ZnO interaction also enhanced the Lewis acidity of the Co/ZnO interface, contributing to the adsorption of LA and the esterification of intermediates. The synergy between the hydrogenation sites and the Lewis acid sites at the Co/ZnO interface enabled the conversion of LA to GVL with high efficiency. In addition, benefiting from the Co-ZnO interfacial interaction as well as the unique carbon-encapsulated structure of the heterojunction catalyst, the recyclability was also greatly improved and the yield of GVL was nearly unchanged even after six cycles.

Exploring the Zn-regulated function in Co–Zn catalysts for efficient hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone

A series of CoZn catalysts supported on N-doped porous carbon (CoxZny@NPC-T) prepared at different calcination temperatures are studied for catalytic hydrogenation of biomass-based ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone, in which Zn is introduced as a regulator.
